Decimals represent parts of whole numbers. To write decimals in word form, first make sure you learn place value and know the names of the places after the decimal point. Once you understand place value, you can write out the decimal.

  1. Image titled Write Decimals in Word Form Step 1

    1

Recall the ones, tens, and hundreds places. It can help to quickly go over the place value for whole numbers before thinking about place value for decimals. Every digit in the ones place represents one whole (i.e. 7 is the same as 7 ones). In the tens place, every digit represents ten wholes. For example, the number 30 is 3 tens. Every digit in the hundreds place represents one hundred wholes. So the number 837 is 8 hundreds, 3 tens, and 7 ones, which we call eight hundred thirty-seven.[1]

    • Every time you move right in the number, the place value gets 10 times smaller.
  2. Image titled Write Decimals in Word Form Step 2

    2

Understand what a decimal point is. The decimal point separates the whole number from the decimal value. Numbers after the decimal point represent fractions, or parts of numbers.[2]

    • Just like on the other side of the decimal point, the numbers get 10 times smaller every time you move right a place value. For instance, 0.1 is ten times bigger than 0.01, which in turn is ten times bigger than 0.001, just like how 10 is ten times bigger than 1.

  3. Image titled Write Decimals in Word Form Step 3

    3

Note that the tenths place is the first place after the decimal. The number 0.1 represents one tenth. Each time you move to the right, the number is 1/10 as big as the previous number, which is why 0.1 is ten times smaller than 1.[3]

    • In the US, a dime is one-tenth of a dollar, or $0.10. Coins can be a helpful way to think about decimals.
  4. Image titled Write Decimals in Word Form Step 4

    4

Recognize the hundredths place as the second place after the decimal. 0.01 is one hundredth. A hundredth is 1/100 of a whole, so it would take a 100 hundredths to make 1.[4]

    • A penny is one hundredth of a dollar, or $0.01.
  5. Image titled Write Decimals in Word Form Step 5

    5

Learn that the thousandths place is the third place after the decimal. The number 0.001 is one thousandth. One thousandth is 1/1000 of a whole. Imagine splitting a whole into 1,000 pieces and taking one of those pieces—that would be one thousandth. If you took four pieces, 0.004, that’s four thousandths.[5]

    • When you’re just learning decimals, you might stick with just the tenths and hundredths place. The thousandths place will be useful later on, though.

  6. Image titled Write Decimals in Word Form Step 6

    6

Ignore zeros if they are at the end of the decimal. For example, 0.5, 0.50, and 0.500 represent the same value, so you can just ignore the ending zeros when writing the decimal in words. Don’t ignore zeros in the middle of the decimal though. For example, 0.03 and 0.3 are very different numbers.[6]

    • If you’re confused about why you can ignore zeros at the end, think of the decimals as fractions. 0.5 is 5/10, 0.50 is 50/100 and 0.500 is 500/1000. All of those are the same fraction, ½.

  1. Image titled Write Decimals in Word Form Step 7

    1

Write out the whole number normally. For the part of the number before the decimal point, write it out as you usually would. You have to remember place value when you are writing whole numbers.[7]

    • For example, 3,450.02 would be three thousand four hundred fifty and two hundredths.
  2. Image titled Write Decimals in Word Form Step 8

    2

Put down “and” for the decimal point if it comes after a whole number. For example, if the number is 40.05, write “forty and five hundredths.” Most teachers prefer that you write “and” instead of “point.”[8]

    • The word “and” helps people know that you are switching from whole numbers to parts of numbers.
  3. Image titled Write Decimals in Word Form Step 9

    3

Note that you don’t write «and» if the number is less than one. When writing decimals that have a zero in the ones place, like 0.2 or 0.017, don’t write “point,” “and” or anything else. Just start writing the number. For example, write 0.9 as nine tenths, whereas 1.9 is one and nine tenths.[9]

    • You don’t need the word «and» to mark the transition between whole numbers and decimal numbers in numbers less than 1 because there is no transition.
  4. Image titled Write Decimals in Word Form Step 10

    4

Write the numbers after the decimal point as a whole number. For example, write .052 as “fifty-two thousandths.” Similarly, 0.52 is «fifty-two hundredths.» No matter how many zeros there are before other numbers start, you still write it the way you would write a whole number.[10]

    • Don’t write the word “and” other than to represent the decimal point. For instance, write .103 as one hundred three thousandths, not one hundred and three thousandths.
  5. Image titled Write Decimals in Word Form Step 11

    5

End with the place value of the last digit. For example, the number 0.003 is three thousandths, because 3 is in the thousandths place. Alternatively, 0.523 is five hundred twenty-three thousandths because it also ends with the thousandths place. The number 0.92 is ninety-two hundredths.[11]

    • Remember to ignore zeros at the end of decimals. Write 0.890 as eighty-nine hundredths, not eight hundred ninety thousandths.
  6. Image titled Write Decimals in Word Form Step 12

    6

Hyphenate if the last 2 digits are expressed in 2 words. For example, write 0.32 as thirty-two hundredths with a dash between thirty and two because 32 is written in 2 words. On the other hand, write 0.12 as twelve hundredths because 12 can be written as just 1 word.[12]

Word form is one way in which the concept of numbers can be written. Other forms include standard and expanded form. Word form involves expressing numbers using words rather than numerals. Below are a few examples of numbers written in word form.

  • The word form for 14 is fourteen.
  • The word form for is one half.
  • The word form for 5.6 is five and six tenths. Note that the decimal point is read as «and.»
  • The word form for 2,010 is two thousand ten.
  • The word form for 1,000,000 is one million.

How to write numbers in word form

We can write all types of numbers, such as integers, fractions, and decimal numbers, in word form.

Integers

Recall that integers are the set of all positive and negative whole numbers including 0. For the smaller numbers, like 1-20 we just need to remember what the numbers are called.

1-20
1 — one 11 — eleven
2 — two 12 — twelve
3 — three 13 — thirteen
4 — four 14 — fourteen
5 — five 15 — fifteen
6 — six 16 — sixteen
7 — seven 17 — seventeen
8 — eight 18 — eighteen
9 — nine 19 — nineteen
10 — ten 20 — twenty

Note that any negative number is written in word form in the same way except that the word «negative» is written in front. Once we know how to write each of the above numbers in word form, the next step is to remember what every 10 numbers is referred to:

10 — ten
20 — twenty
30 — thirty
40 — forty
50 — fifty
60 — sixty
70 — seventy
80 — eighty
90 — ninety

Numbers that include both tens and ones are hyphenated. For example, 21 is written as twenty-one, 39 is written as thirty-nine, and so on.

Writing larger numbers in word form requires an understanding of place value and periods. Below is a figure showing the place values and periods through the billions.

The numbers described above fall within the ones period and involve ones, tens, and hundreds. The next period is the thousands, which also includes ones (thousand), tens (ten thousand), and hundreds (hundred thousands). This pattern continues for all the larger numbers (the smaller ones as well, if there are decimal places). To write a given number in word form, identify the largest place value, write each number as we would in the ones place based on hundreds, tens, and ones, then write which period the digits fit into, whether it be millions, thousands, etc., but excluding the ones. Repeat this process from left to right.

Example

Use the place value chart to write the following number in word form.

There are 4 periods in the above number: billions, millions, thousands, and ones. We can separate each period with commas, as we would with numerals. Write out the word form of the three digits in each period, then add the respective period name after each, except for the ones period. Attempt this before reading the solution below.

The word form of the above number is:

Two hundred forty-nine billion, five hundred fifty-one million, six hundred seventy-two thousand, four hundred eighty-six.

Decimal numbers

Decimal numbers are written in word form in a similar way as integers. One key difference is the addition of the decimal point, which is written as «and.» The numbers after the decimal point are written in the same way as any integer, except that the last digit in the number is hyphenated, and the place value of the digit is written after the hyphen. For example, the decimal number 123.123 is written in word form as «One hundred twenty-three and one hundred twenty-three-thousandths.»

The table below shows the name of each place based on the place value of the number 1:

Decimal Place value
0.1 tenths
0.01 hundredths
0.001 thousandths
0.0001 ten-thousandths
0.00001 hundred-thousandths
0.000001 millionths
0.0000001 ten-millionth
0.00000001 hundred-millionth
0.000000001 billionth

Thus, to write any decimal number:

  • Write the word form of the number to the left of the decimal point first, then the word form of the number to the right.
  • Hyphenate the last word in the word form of the number to the right of the decimal point.
  • Write the place value of the last digit after the hyphen.

Fractions

The rules for writing fractions in word form are not as consistent as those for writing a decimal number, so instead of set rules, below are a few examples of the word forms of various fractions, as well as some general rules that apply to many fractions.

Generally, aside from exceptions, such as the word form of ½ being «one half» not «one second,» the rules below can be used to write the word form of most fractions.

  1. Write the word form of the integer in the numerator.
  2. Write the denominator in its ordinal number form.

How do you write numbers in word form?

To write a number in words, write the number in each period followed by the name of the period without the ‘s’ at the end. Start with the digit at the left, which has the largest place value. The commas separate the periods, so wherever there is a comma in the number, write a comma between the words.

“Standard English is not entirely uniform around the globe: for example, American users of standard English say the first floor and I’ve just gotten a letter and write center and color, while British users say ground floor and I’ve just got a letter and write centre and colour.

What is standard form of a function?

Standard Form. The quadratic function f(x) = a(x – h)2 + k, a not equal to zero, is said to be in standard form. If a is positive, the graph opens upward, and if a is negative, then it opens downward. The line of symmetry is the vertical line x = h, and the vertex is the point (h,k).

What are the three requirements of standard form?

The Standard Form for a linear equation in two variables, x and y, is usually given as Ax + By = C where, if at all possible, A, B, and C are integers, and A is non-negative, and, A, B, and C have no common factors other than 1.

How do you convert an equation into standard form?

The standard form of such an equation is Ax + By + C = 0 or Ax + By = C. When you rearrange this equation to get y by itself on the left side, it takes the form y = mx +b. This is called slope intercept form because m is equal to the slope of the line, and b is the value of y when x = 0, which makes it the y-intercept.

Can 0 be in standard form?

But c can be zero if it wants. It’s the favorite child, so it gets special privileges. For example, the equation 8y = 3 is equivalent to the equation , which is also in standard form (with b = 1). If either a or b is zero, we know how to graph the equation and how to read off an equation from a graph.

What is the standard form of Y 2 3x 4?

The standard form line equation is Ax + By = C. A shouldn’t be negative, A and B shouldn’t both be zero, and A, B and C should be integers. The equation is y = (- 2/3)x + 4.

What is slope standard form?

Standard form is another way to write slope-intercept form (as opposed to y=mx+b). It is written as Ax+By=C. A, B, C are integers (positive or negative whole numbers) No fractions nor decimals in standard form. “Ax” term is positive.
