If you like to change the measurement and all display units from inches to cm in Word, you are at the right place. By default, the display measurement units of MS Office products, including Word 2019/2016/2013 and Office 365, are set to show in Inches. This small guide would be helpful to change inches to cm (Centimeter) or cm to inches in Microsoft Word.

For example, if I have measurements for a label or sticker in cm, and I need to create that exact size label in MS Word, which is set to show in Inches, definitely it will be slightly difficult to adjust it properly. I need to convert them to inches manually and do the proper settings. Width, height, margins and paper size will be in Inches in MS Word by default.

Changing the display option to cm is better to make the creation easy. If you are familiar with the centimetre of your geographical location, it is ideal for changing the default settings as described below.

Here is an example of how MS word shows the paper size in inches by default.

The inch symbol is denoted by a double prime (i.e. double quotes) whilst the feet symbol is denoted by a prime (i.e. apostrophe). For instance, nine feet five inches can be written or typed as 9’5″ using your keyboard.

In today’s article, you’ll learn how to use some keyboard (or alt code) shortcuts to make or type the Feet and Inch Symbols (text) on the keyboard.

Note: On the standard keyboard, the Inch Symbol is the same as double quotes and an apostrophe respectively. To type the double quotes symbol as the inch symbol, press Shift + ′ (apostrophe), and to type the apostrophe as the feet symbol, just press the apostrophe key.

Now, below will show you more ways to type these symbols (double quotes and an apostrophe) using the keyboard.

Feet & Inch Symbols [“] Quick Guide

To type the Inch Symbol on Keyboard, press Shift + ′ (apostrophe key) simultaneously. And to type the feet symbol, just press once on the apostrophe key. For instance, eight feet four inches will be typed as 8′4″.

The above quick guide shows you what the inch and feet symbols are and some useful shortcuts and alt codes on how to type these symbols.

Also, below are some other fun ways you can use to insert these symbols into your work such as Word or Excel documents.

Windows provides several methods for typing symbols on the keyboard.

In this section, I will make available for you five different methods you can use to type or insert the Inch sign on your keyboard.

Without any further ado, let’s get started.

Using the Inch Symbol Alt Code (Windows Only)

The Inch symbol alt code is 0148. Even though this Symbol has a dedicated key on the keyboard, you can also type it on the keyboard with the Alt code method. To do this, open your Word document and place the insertion pointer where you need to type the symbol. Then press and hold the Alt key whilst typing the Symbol’s Alt code (i.e. 0148) using the numeric keypad.

This method works on Windows only. And your keyboard must also have a numeric keypad.

Also, to type the Inch Symbol in Word, type 0022, then press Alt and X keys simultaneously to convert the code into an Inch Symbol.

Inches and feet symbol alt code

Below is a break-Down of the steps you can take to type the Inch sign on your Windows PC:

  • Place your insertion pointer where you need the symbol.
  • Press and hold one of the Alt keys on your keyboard.
  • Whilst holding on to the Alt key, press the Symbol’s alt code (0148). You must use the numeric keypad to type the alt code. If you are using a laptop without the numeric keypad, this method may not work for you. On some laptops, there’s a hidden numeric keypad which you can enable by pressing Fn+NmLk on the keyboard.
  • Release the Alt key after typing the Alt code to insert the Symbol into your document.

This is how you may type this symbol in Word using the Alt Code method.

Using the Inch Symbol Shortcut

The keyboard shortcut for the Inch Symbol is Shift + ′ (apostrophe). To use this shortcut, press the shift and apostrophe keys simultaneously.

Below is a breakdown of the Inch Symbol shortcut on the keyboard:

  • Place the insertion pointer at the desired location.
  • Then press Shift+′ (apostrophe).

These are the steps you may use to type the Inch Symbol.

Copy and Paste the Inch sign

Another easy way to get the Inch symbol on any PC is to use my favorite method: copy and paste.

All you have to do is to copy the symbol from somewhere like a web page, or the character map for windows users, and head over to where you need the symbol (say in Word or Excel), then hit Ctrl+V to paste.

Below is the symbol for you to copy and paste into your Word document. Just select it and press Ctrl+C to copy, switch over to Microsoft Word, place your insertion pointer at the desired location, and press Ctrl+V to paste.

Alternatively, just use the copy button at the beginning of this post.

For windows users, obey the following instructions to copy and paste the Inch  Symbol using the character map dialog box.

  • Click on the Start button and search for Character Map. The Character Map app will appear in the search results, click to open.

Changing the Measurement Units for Your Word Documents (Inches to Centimeters or Vice Versa)

by Avantix Learning Team | Updated January 10, 2021

Applies to: Microsoft® Word® 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and 365 (Windows)

You can easily change the measurement system units in Microsoft Word for all of your documents. If you’d prefer to work in inches rather than cm (centimeters) or vice versa, simply change the measurement system in Word’s Options. You can choose inches, centimeters, millimeters, points or picas. Changes in the measurement system will affect Word’s Ruler as well as various dialog boxes (including the Paragraph dialog where you can change paragraph indents).

Unless the client or publication has a specific requirement for a type of measurement, most Microsoft Word users measure in inches or centimeters. Word and most graphic design programs support points, picas and other units and it is easy to convert from one unit to another.

Understanding points and picas

The two units of measurement most commonly used for typesetting and design are points and picas.

A point is equal to 1/72 inch (72 points in an inch). To be more precise, 1 point is equal to .013836 inch so 72 points are actually .996264 inch. This is rounded up for practical reasons. Points are the measurement unit most often used in printed publications created by graphic designers to indicate the size of type (font size) as well as the space between lines (this would be line spacing in Word but is called leading in many other programs). Points are often abbreviated as «pt». Typographers would have traditionally referred to a type setting as 12/16 which would mean a 12 point type with 16 point leading or line spacing.

A pica is slightly less than 1/6 inch and contains 12 points. Picas are often used for fixed horizontal measurements (most often column width). They are commonly used by graphic designers when designing newspapers, magazines, newsletters and ads. Picas are often abbreviated as «p» (such as 16p). For example, the standard width for one column of text on a three-column grid on an 8.5″ x 11″ document is 14 picas and 4 points (normally abbreviated as 14p4).

Although most Microsoft Word users tend to use inches or centimeters as their preferred measurement system, points are used for font size and the space before and after paragraphs (in the Paragraph dialog box).

The symbols used for inches are the twin prime for shorthand and the scientific “in” for shorthand. The double premium is commonly replaced with quotation marks, both of which consist of a tiny, apostrophe-like pair of marks. The unpaired premium that signifies the feet should not be mistaken.

As the inch is utilized in the United States as a common measuring unit exclusively, the science “in” is used globally far more often than the double primes. Even in the US, the double premium is sometimes misled by the unique premium, often confounding the conventional shorthand method.

The worldwide standard sign for inch is in (see ISO 31-1, Annex A), however, the inch is historically referred to as a double prime that is commonly approximated by double quotations, whereas the feet are marked as an apostrophe. Two inches can write three feet as 3′ 2′′, for example.

Word 2010 lets you sprinkle characters in sequence, numerals, a sprinkler of pictures, and accentuation things past the console’s 26 letters. For example, Word provides a variety of interesting stuff beyond dialect letters and graphics. Two or three distinct methods you can include an extraordinary character or picture into your record:

Menu of the symbol: In the Aggregate symbol on the Insert tab, click the Catch symbol. An overview of several major or late-used pictures appears. Choosing a picture from the menu precisely integrates the unusual image in the contents (where the inclusion point is now available), just like you are incorporating some other character.

The Exchange Box of Symbols: The Symbol Discourse Box is displayed in the Symbol menu. For example, choose from the Font option to view unusual and irregular letters with a brighter text style. Select (Standard Text) from the Dropdown Rundown Font to view the variety of what is conceivable with common contents. To view even more pictures, use the drop-down subset.

Select the image and touch the Catch Insert to enter a character in your report from the symbol exchange box. When you complete using the dialogue box of Symbols, tap the Cancel catch.

Code of the image: You may integrate pictures by preparing the image code and then pressing the Alt+X key. For example, the signature code is 2211: For example, Press Alt+X to type 2211 in your record. The number 2211 is transformed mystically into a sigma. A fast Web survey will provide an asset with an image overview and its comparative codes.

Methods to type a symbol on the keyboard are provided for Windows.
I will offer five alternative techniques for typing the Inch sign on your keyboard in this section.
Let’s get started without any further ado.

Using The Inch Symbol Alt Code

The alt code is the 0148-inch symbol. Although this icon has a special key on the keyboard, the Alt code technique can also be used to enter it on the keyboard. Open your Word document and put the insertion pointer to type the symbol. Tap and hold the Alt key, using the numeric keyboard, while entering the alt code of the symbol (e.g. 0148).
Only Windows works with this approach. You must also have a numerical keypad on your keyboard.
Also, press the Alt and X keys at the same time to transform the Inch symbol into Inch symbol to type in Word, typed 0022.
The procedures to input the Inch sign to your Windows PC below will be shown:

  • Place where the symbol is needed using your insertion pointer.
  • Push one of your keyboard’s Alt keys and hold it.
  • Press the symbol’s alt code while holding down the Alt key (0148). To input the alt code, you need to use the number keypad. This approach may not work for you if you use a laptop without a numerical keypad. There is a secret numeric keyboard on certain computers, which may be activated by pressing Fn+NmLk on the keyboard
  • Release the Alt key to put the symbol on your page after typing the Alt code.

Copy And Paste The Inch Sign

Another easy approach to acquire the Inch sign on any PC is by copying and pasting with my preferred method.

You just have to copy the symbol for window users from anything like the web page and head to where the symbolic symbol (say Word or Excel) is needed and then click the Ctrl+V button.

Below is the copy and paste icon in your Word document. Just copy it by pressing Ctrl+C, switching to Microsoft Word, putting the insert point at the required spot, and pressing Ctrl+V to paste it.

Otherwise, at the beginning of this post just click the copy button.

Search for Character Map by clicking the Start button. In the results of the search, you may click on the Character Map app.

A dialogue will be shown for the Character Map. To expand the dialogue box for further advanced choices, click on the check-box Advanced View.

Type Quotation in the Search box on the advanced view.

The Inch symbol on the character map dialogue should now be displayed. If you cannot see it, you should see it in the symbol library. Double-click to choose when you have discovered it. Click the Select button alternatively.

After double-clicking on the symbol, the symbol should show in the copy Character: box and, to copy the symbol, click the Copy button.

To copy and paste the Inch Symbol using a character map dialogue box, follow the following directions to windows users.
