ОТВЕТ

Once upon a time me and my friends decided to go on a train trip to Moscow. We bought our tickets in advance and were really excited. On the day of the journey we arrived a bit early to the station. Despite that, we were met with a crowded platform. A lot of people were traveling with different intentions, many were excited however. Perhaps those unfamiliar faces were going to meet their friends or relatives, maybe some were going on a vacation, and some might have other reasons to travel.

Anyways, after a short wait the train arrived, the guard checked our tickets and we quickly went to our seats. The feeling of adventure was quickly rising in all of us, as we ran through the picturesque scenery of Russia’s great wildlife. We admired the beauty that surrounded us, talked about different things and overall had fun. Our fellow passengers were pretty humble too. We met a couple new people and they told us an interesting story about hunting. The atmosphere was friendly and made this trip memorable.

Overall it was a great train trip that was worth it. Our stay in Moscow was fun too but that’s a story for another time.

AUDIO
Interviewer: With us today is Fiona Collins. Miss Collins, you work for one of well−known travel agencies in Britain. May I ask you a few questions?
Miss Fiona Collins: Please call me Fiona. What are the questions?
Interviewer: Most tourists arriving in Great Britain want to see London. How long should they stay in the capital to get an idea of it?
Fiona: It depends on how closely you want to get acquainted with the great city. It can take anything from 3 days to several weeks. London has so much to offer to visitors.
Interviewer: So, would you recommend then to stay in London as long as possible?
Fiona: No, I wouldn’t. I can advise those who haven’t been to Britain before to make a tour of the country.
Interviewer: What places are the top of the list?
Fiona: Bath, Cambridge, Canterbury, Edinburgh, Oxford, York… to name only a few. The reason people know about them is that all of them have lots to do and see and they all have beautiful buildings of some kind, for example, castles, cathedrals or university colleges.
Interviewer: Don’t you think that tourists may easily get tired of visiting big cities?
Fiona: One shouldn’t forget about the British countryside. Although Britain is quite small and has a large population, there are still a lot of fields and trees between towns, and even from the biggest cities it’s not difficult to get to the countryside. Much of it is of course farmland, but there are a lot of lovely views per feet for those who enjoy taking pictures.
Interviewer: Don’t you think it may be somewhat boring to walk through fields and woods?
Fiоna: We all know that tastes differ. But British countryside can hardly be called boring. Something visitors may notice about the British countryside is that in many areas it changes a lot in a short distance. Besides, certain areas are popular for different activities because of the kinds of countryside that you find there.
Interviewer: Could you give some examples, please?
Fiona: In the Lake District you can find fishing, walking and water sports, while in the Peak District walking and climbing are popular. In many parts of Wales visitors can ride horses across country. Northern Ireland has got places for fishing and playing golf. But you don’t have to have a special interest in any of these activities to enjoy the different features of countryside.
Interviewer: Will it be right to say that everybody can find something to their taste while travelling in Britain?
Fiona: Absolutely. And I can say that there are very few people whom Great Britain, this beautiful country with such an interesting history, can leave cold.

I have travelled by train many times. I do enjoying it. One of my trips was to Moscow. I bought a return ticket in advance. It was a summer time, so the sleeping car was cozy and warm. I didn’t have much luggage with me. It was the carriage for non−smokers and there was a tasty dinner from a buffet car.
When I came to the railway station, I looked at the board to check the platform and the time of departure.
Then I gave my ticket to the guard for inspection. My fellow passengers looked nice and friendly. I said «hello» to them, put my luggage away and we had an interesting chat.

What is story writing?

Story Writing – A story writing is a work of “fiction or imagination” that is usually written in “easily understandable grammatical structure” with a “natural flow of speech”. Story writing is meant to be read at a single sitting and therefore it should be as direct and brief as possible.

Typically story writing has five key elements – Character (fewer is better), Setting (brief but poetic and vivid), Plot (as simple and interesting as possible), Conflict (intense but one), and Theme (relating to the majority of readers).

A character is someone or something that takes part in actions depicted in the short story. It could be a living person, a dead person, a ghost, an imaginary character, a robot, a dog, a toy… an unlimited list.

Story Writing Format

The golden rule for selecting characters in story writing is “Fewer is better”. Story writing would more effectively convey its meaning if it has very few characters – one protagonist, one other main character, and no supporting or side characters would be ideal.

The animating character with perfect adjectives and examples is a must however, typically while writing short stories, do not fall overdo the characterization.

Time frame and place constitute the setting of story writing. The setting is often decorated with descriptions of scenes such as supermarket, bedroom, crowded metro train, or drizzling evening… again unlimited list. These descriptions are very important to make the reader immerse in the plot.

Unit of time frame may vary from hours to days to weeks to years. The golden rule in selecting time frame for story writing is “keep it shorter” and “have it single”. Story writing that has setting of few hours may typically be clearer and more effective than with setting of few months or years.

vividly describe surroundings. must be absolutely clear and very importantly be appealing to five senses of your readers. Be poetic, use suitable adjectives, script dialogues, or even deploy side characters… do whatever you need to ensure that the reader lives your story while reading.

The plot is the flesh and muscles of story writing. It comprises events and characters’ actions. The more creatively you describe and logically connect the events and actions, the stronger the plot would be, and the stronger the plot you create, the better interest would it generate among readers. A plot has a start, body, and end that are linked sequentially by events and character actions.

You must so choose a start that your reader gets hooked to the story. create confusion or question in readers’ minds by the first line of your story. Your reader must try to get an answer to the best of her ability and experience but she should finally end up digging into subsequent lines of your stories to quench her temporarily aroused inquisitiveness.

The central idea or main belief presented by a story writing is called theme. It is a skeleton or frame of your short story that is decorated by plot, setting, conflict, and characters.

The five key elements (or stages) of Story Writing are as follows-

  1. Character
  2. Setting
  3. Plot
  4. Conflict
  5. Theme

(Compartment 2019 English Communicative Set-1)

A series of Unfortunate Events

I sat down with relief as I ticked off the last task in the checklist. I wanted everything to be perfect as it was my best friend’s marriage in Mumbai. The alarm rang next morning, I woke up in excitement and booked a cab to the railway station. Everything was going perfectly until I got stuck in a traffic jam. I reached the railway station late but on the sight of the train still waiting on the platform, I hurried and somehow managed to get into the train. I breathed a sigh of relief and got comfortable. It was only when the Ticket Collector came, I realised that I had been in the wrong train for two hours. I panicked and deboarded the train at the next station. I tried booking a ticket for the next train to Mumbai but there was no availability. On coming back from the ticket counter, I realised that my luggage was missing. Even after hours of finding and reporting it, there was no trace of it. I got tired and lost hope, tried booking a cab with the minimal amount I was left with in my pocket. The cab couldn’t reach on time as it was raining heavily. Disheartened, I finally walked my way to the nearest hotel, contacted my parents and recited them the series of unfortunate events that happened during the day. Alas, I couldn’t even make it to my best friend’s wedding.

The Last Day

Satish was standing on the balcony watching the last rays of the Sun. Loud and angry voices in the street below distracted his attention. He ran down the stairs to see what had happened. His neighbours were again fighting over some parking issues. It was a common scene among the residents of that area. No sooner did he reach there when suddenly the land between the neighbours’ buildings started tearing apart. Everyone got frightened. Satish ran back to his house to find his daughter and wife. They were both ready with their emergency baggage. The family got out of the house and started running as fast as they could, passing the falling trees and buildings. Water was penetrating out of the departing land and everyone was panicking and running in any direction to save their lives when suddenly, Satish’s daughter fell down. A tree fell over her feet. Satish was trying to help his crying daughter when they both saw a building falling over them. Satish hugged his daughter and shouted at the peak of his voice which finally woke him up. With sighs of heavy breathing and excessive sweating, Satish went to his daughter’s room only to find that everything was fine. He kissed her forehead, went back to his room and wondered; “Phew! This one really took the life out of me”.

Things are Not Always What They Seem

It was Mohini’s first day at the new school. She was feeling very nervous. She stood in a corner and watched the students who were laughing and talking excitedly. When she saw four senior students advancing towards her, she got terrified and started going towards her classroom hurriedly. The four students caught up with her speed and cornered her. Drops of sweat rolled down her face as she muttered in a trembling voice, “Leave me alone”. They started coming nearer as they sensed her fear. Two tall boys and two girls of medium height looked at her and gave her spine-chilling terror. Before Mohini could shout, one of the girls covered her mouth and they all started laughing. Mohini was left astonished. To make things clear, one of the boys told her that they had been assigned to guide her through the school and assist her to make her feel comfortable. They were coming nearer to introduce themselves and thought of playing a small prank when Mohini started running away from them. Mohini breathed a sigh of relief and conveyed that she thought she was about to get bullied.

4. Write a story in 150-200 words with the help of the following outline. Give it a suitable title also.

(CBSE 2019 English Language and Literature Set-1)

The False alarm

Bunya was a foolish boy, who was an attention seeker. He was a woodcutter and would go deep into the jungle to cut trees. One day he wanted to do an act of mischief. He shouted at the top of his voice, “There’s a tiger, tiger, there’s a tiger … ….” even when there was no trace of it. The villagers came running hurriedly thinking that Bunya was in danger. Bunya’s mother had tears in her eyes. The villagers came ready with their safety weapons and upon reaching, they saw no tiger but just Bunya laughing on playing them. The villagers were hurt and they started swearing out of disappointment. Bunya had no realisation as to what he had done and he continued laughing stealthily. A week passed by and everyone was ignoring Bunya. One fine day, he and his friend went into the woods. Just like any other day, they started doing their job while chatting with each other. Suddenly, they heard a roar nearby. The tiger was towards his friend’s side of the jungle. Bhunya went running to the villagers asking them for help. No one listened to him as they thought it was one of his pranks. He cried for help, but no one trusted him. He ran towards the tea vendor and told him the entire story. The tea vendor gave him the benefit of the doubt and went with him. Till the time they reached there, his friend could be seen nowhere. They called out his name and looked in the woods, but it was too late. Bhunya realised and accepted that it was all his mistake.

Moral of the story is, “Truth doesn’t cost you anything but a lie could cost you everything”.

5. Write a story in 150-200 words with the help of the following outline : 10
Tortoise and hare – good friends – tortoise – known for his slow speed – hare has fast speed – makes fun of tortoise – challenges him – referee selected – race starts – hare overconfident – takes a nap – tortoise wins.
(CBSE 2018 English Language and Literature Set-1)

Slow and steady wins the race

Once upon a time there were 2 friends, a tortoise and a hare. The whole jungle was aware about their brotherhood and how they stuck together with each other no matter what. One fine day, when they were discussing about their respective speed, the hare made fun of the tortoise for being slower. Now, it is a well known fact that tortoises generally have a hard shell which makes it difficult for them to walk. But the hare continued to make fun of him. The tortoise got very angry and asked him to prove it. The hare, in turn, challenged the tortoise to run a race with him. Both of them agreed upon the date and time. The news was taken over to the king of the jungle, the lion. He chose a referee and announced the commencement of preparations. The entire jungle was excited as it was the first time that the two brothers were competing with each other. Days before the race, the hare went around talking high about himself whereas on the other hand, the tortoise practiced diligently. The night before the race, the tortoise slept on time, to be energetic the other day, whereas the hare continued to dream about him winning and how obvious it was that he needed no preparations. The wait was over, the tickets were completely sold out and the crowd was cheerful. Both the contestants stood ready on the starting line and the race was supposed to end at a stretch of one kilometre. The whistle blew and both started running at their own pace. The hare covered half the distance while the tortoise could only cover half of what the hare had covered. The overconfident hare thought of taking a nap and thought that by the time the tortoise would come near him, he would wake up and cover the rest of the distance. After some time, the hare was woken up by the sound of hooting and whistling, the tortoise had won.

Therefore, the moral of the story is, “Confidence is good, but overconfidence always sinks the ship”.

The family began going out for preparations and since it was supposed to be a surprise, they would leave their grandmother alone at home. She felt sad but never expressed it to anyone. On the day of her birthday, no one wished her. Everyone started getting ready and told her that they had their own respective plans. The grandfather asked her to accompany him for a walk. It was all a part of their plan. The grandfather took the route to the venue and didn’t make it look in a way that could make her suspicious. Upon reaching the venue, the lights suddenly went on and everybody shouted, “Happy Birthday”. The grandmother was overwhelmed and tears of love came rolling down her eyes. This was the happiest birthday till then

What is Story Writing?

Story Writing is a fictional writing method that is written in a simpler way and has its own natural flow. Story Writing covers five elements: Character (Crucially a Protagonist and Antagonist), Setting, Plot, Conflict, and Theme. Through story writing, you share the experience of characters in a physical setting with a plot that makes it story-worthy, a conflict that causes a riff or relationship core of the characters, and finally the theme of the story as in what the story wants to share.

A story is usually meant for entertainment purposes, can be moral-based or both. It is important that your written narrative has an “easily understandable grammatical structure” with “natural flow of speech” to help the reader comprehend it. Stories can be told using different forms of narration like written, oral and visual or audio-video.

Here are the elements of a short story format:

  • Setting
  • Characterization
  • Plot
  • Conflict
  • Climax
  • Resolution

Short Story Writing Format

Here is the story writing format:

  • Beginning: Kickstart your story with a catchy beginning that grips your readers right away!
  • Character Introduction: Familiarise your readers with the main characters, their part in the story and help them fit the pieces of your story puzzle!
  • Plot: This is when the real drama begins, as the main plot comes to the limelight. Expose the story and let your characters react, evolve and reach towards the main conflict.
  • Climax/Ending/Conclusion: Whether you go for a happy one or an open ending, make sure that at least some of the issues if not all of them get resolved by the end and you leave a long-lasting impression on the readers!

Let’s take a look at the main constituents of the story writing format which have been explained below:

Beginning

Courtesy: Pinterest

The beginning is the most fundamental and basic element of story writing format which stresses upon setting the right stage for your characters as well as the plot. Often referred to as the exposition, the beginning of the story is the part where you need to provide the reader with a basic overview of every key character and the setting for the plot in order to hook the reader till the end.

Introduction to Characters

Often comprised under the beginning element of story writing, character introductions might also happen after the setting has been solidified. It is necessary to produce characters that have a purpose or role in the development of the story. Try creating characters that the reader can relate to and those that connect the plot throughout the narration.

Plot

Once you have familiarised the reader with the setting and character, the next step is to work towards curating an intricate and engaging plot. The plot is where the actual action of the whole story occurs. Without including this element in your story writing, you will not be able to intrigue the reader and spark their curiosity.

Conflict

Conflict is where you have the chance to experiment with your characters by putting them in a persevering circumstance or rather entering a new sub-plot to intrigue the reader further. This constituent of story writing aims to hook the reader to the plot and you must weave it in an engaging way. Often the conflict in the story can be an event, situation or even a new character. It plays a vital role in changing the mundane lives of your story’s characters and putting a challenge in front of them which will make your narrative interesting.

Climax/Conclusion

Courtesy: Pinterest

Considered to be the final stage in story writing format, a logical or decisive conclusion is where the story ends. It elucidates upon the resolution of the conflict that you introduced as well as explores what your character learnt from the situational conflict or how they emerged from it. Often many stories do not have an ending but leave the reader in bewilderment with the promise of continuing with the next part and this tactic is referred to as a cliffhanger.

How to Write a Story?

While the commonly followed story writing format has been elaborated above, there are no certain and specific rules that one needs to follow while carving out an interesting story. Writers generally start the process by searching for story-writing topics and ideas. To help you create an appealing and engaging story, we have recommended a general process you can follow.

Here is how you can write a short story:

  • Think of the main idea of your story
  • Create a basic outline of your story
  • Add a protagonist
  • Write an intriguing first line of your story
  • Build up on your characters
  • Write, Edit & Proofread

The Idea is the Premise

The first and foremost thing you need for story writing is an idea. This idea can be anything, from an event to a character or a simple one-liner that you want to turn into a story. Further, ideas come with constant brainstorming, reading and writing and often if you are not getting the right ideas to form your narrative, you are surely facing a writer’s block. Read as much as you can, write all the story writing topics you have in mind and brainstorm with yourself and others to come up with engaging storylines.

Carve a Basic Outline

Once you are sure about the story you want to narrate, the next step is to create a simple outline of events and characters the narrative will spread across. This can be just a one-liner which can brief anyone about the basic storyline or it can be in pointers listing down the different events. Making a concise outline will help you keep a grasp over the story writing format as you will be able to understand the different events and how they will unfold.

Focus on the Protagonist

“The protagonist is the character whose fate matters most to the story.”

Stephen Koch

Just like you have to spend hours working on the right idea for your story, you will also have to work on carving the right protagonist who can represent the idea and theme of your narrative. While most writers prefer to have a character as their protagonist, it is commonly not a necessity to do so. You can put innovate and think out of the box and make any event, idea or even a thing your protagonist. But remember, a protagonist will drive your story’s narrative and plot, so choose judiciously.

Now that you have made up your mind on what, who, where, how and when of your story, penning down the first line is an equal struggle as that of finalising the above elements of the story writing format. The first line of your story will set the tone of the plot, hook the reader and establish the voice of your narrative. So, it is important to spend time on creating an engaging and marvellous first line. Take a look at some of the famous opening lines of popular books which will surely inspire you:

“If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you’ll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don’t feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth.”
The Catcher in the Rye, JD Salinger

Write an Intriguing First Line

“All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”
Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”
Pride & Prejudice, Jane Austen

“Mrs. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself.”
Mrs Dalloway, Virginia Woolf

“As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect.”
The Metamorphosis and Other Stories, Franz Kafka

Build Up the Characters

Another prominent element of the story writing format, your characters will give structure, flair and flow to the narrative and thus need to be developed cautiously. Experiment with events and how these characters can react to them to help them progress towards the ultimate conclusion of the story.

Write, Proofread, Edit & Repeat!

Once you have finished writing a story, the final step should always be to proofread and edit the narrative. Ask a friend to read the story, get it reviewed and you can keep editing, adding to it and removing any additional paras until you feel good to go!

How to Write Advanced Stories?

  2. Create a story setting
  3. TO enhance the story affect mention time, location, duration, atmosphere and context clearly

  6. Follow the above-mentioned format for covering the plot
  7. Include 2-3 conflicts at regular intervals in your story and resolve them with time, this again will increase the engagement.

Window display in toy shop __________Diwali season_________theft________alarm sounded___________no clues found__________police non-plussed_________little boy spots the difference in window display leading to arrest

Answer:

During a buzzing month of November, people shopped for festivities, sweets and clothes as it was the Diwali Season. All the people shopped endlessly to their heart’s content. The children played and waited for their parents to take them to the toy shop that was located by the corner of the road. This particular toy shop had many attractive toys decorated on a window display.

While everyone was shopping, a small poor boy was looking sadly at the window display of the toy shop while a man was adjusting some toys on the display. The poor boy did not have any money to go to school or pay for the toys. Suddenly, the theft alarm started blaring from the shop. The boy jerked from the sound of the alarm as the man disappeared hurriedly. The man collided with the poor boy due to which some of the items in his pocket fell down. The man picked them up and muttered something under his breath. Due to his haste, the man left a bunch of keys behind. The police arrived as soon as the owner of the toy shop had called the police. They found that an expensive and vintage doll from the 16th century had been stolen. The police couldn’t find any clues as there wasn’t any CCTV to focus on the display window. They were nonplussed.

A huge crowd had gathered in and around the toy shop. The poor boy wanted to tell the police about the man he saw in the shop a while ago. He also noticed that one of the doors to the glass box in the window display was left unlocked. He told the police about the difference, the fishy man that he saw earlier and gave the police the keys that he found.

The police then asked the boy to tell them how the man looked and sent the keys as evidence for further investigation. Due to the information provided by the boy, the police were able to nab the thief red-handed and bring back the expensive doll to the owner. The owner of the toy shop thanked the boy and gifted him a bag of toys and an admission to the nearby school as an early Christmas present.
