What is story writing?

Story Writing – A story writing is a work of “fiction or imagination” that is usually written in “easily understandable grammatical structure” with a “natural flow of speech”. Story writing is meant to be read at a single sitting and therefore it should be as direct and brief as possible.

Typically story writing has five key elements – Character (fewer is better), Setting (brief but poetic and vivid), Plot (as simple and interesting as possible), Conflict (intense but one), and Theme (relating to the majority of readers).

A character is someone or something that takes part in actions depicted in the short story. It could be a living person, a dead person, a ghost, an imaginary character, a robot, a dog, a toy… an unlimited list.

Story Writing Format

The golden rule for selecting characters in story writing is “Fewer is better”. Story writing would more effectively convey its meaning if it has very few characters – one protagonist, one other main character, and no supporting or side characters would be ideal.

The animating character with perfect adjectives and examples is a must however, typically while writing short stories, do not fall overdo the characterization.

Time frame and place constitute the setting of story writing. The setting is often decorated with descriptions of scenes such as supermarket, bedroom, crowded metro train, or drizzling evening… again unlimited list. These descriptions are very important to make the reader immerse in the plot.

Unit of time frame may vary from hours to days to weeks to years. The golden rule in selecting time frame for story writing is “keep it shorter” and “have it single”. Story writing that has setting of few hours may typically be clearer and more effective than with setting of few months or years.

The more creatively you describe and logically connect the events and actions, the stronger the plot would be, and the stronger the plot you create, the better interest would it generate among readers. A plot has a start, body, and end that are linked sequentially by events and character actions.

You must so choose a start that your reader gets hooked to the story. create confusion or question in readers’ minds by the first line of your story. Your reader must try to get an answer to the best of her ability and experience but she should finally end up digging into subsequent lines of your stories to quench her temporarily aroused inquisitiveness.

The central idea or main belief presented by a story writing is called theme. It is a skeleton or frame of your short story that is decorated by plot, setting, conflict, and characters.

Satish was standing on the balcony watching the last rays of the Sun. Loud and angry voices in the street below distracted his attention. He ran down the stairs to see what had happened. His neighbours were again fighting over some parking issues. It was a common scene among the residents of that area. No sooner did he reach there when suddenly the land between the neighbours’ buildings started tearing apart. Everyone got frightened. Satish ran back to his house to find his daughter and wife. It was Mohini’s first day at the new school. She was feeling very nervous. She stood in a corner and watched the students who were laughing and talking excitedly. When she saw four senior students advancing towards her, she got terrified and started going towards her classroom hurriedly. The four students caught up with her speed and cornered her. Drops of sweat rolled down her face as she muttered in a trembling voice, “Leave me alone”. They started coming nearer as they sensed her fear. The False alarm

Bunya was a foolish boy, who was an attention seeker. He was a woodcutter and would go deep into the jungle to cut trees. One day he wanted to do an act of mischief. He shouted at the top of his voice, “There’s a tiger, tiger, there’s a tiger … ….” even when there was no trace of it. The villagers came running hurriedly thinking that Bunya was in danger. Bunya’s mother had tears in her eyes. The villagers came ready with their safety weapons and upon reaching, they saw no tiger but just Bunya laughing on playing them. The villagers were hurt and they started swearing out of disappointment. Bunya had no realisation as to what he had done and he continued laughing stealthily. A week passed by and everyone was ignoring Bunya. One fine day, he and his friend went into the woods. Just like any other day, they started doing their job while chatting with each other. Suddenly, they heard a roar nearby. The tiger was towards his friend’s side of the jungle. Bhunya went running to the villagers asking them for help. No one listened to him as they thought it was one of his pranks. He cried for help, but no one trusted him. He ran towards the tea vendor and told him the entire story. The tea vendor gave him the benefit of the doubt and went with him. Till the time they reached there, his friend could be seen nowhere. They called out his name and looked in the woods, but it was too late. Bhunya realised and accepted that it was all his mistake.

Moral of the story is, “Truth doesn’t cost you anything but a lie could cost you everything”.

Slow and steady wins the race

Once upon a time there were 2 friends, a tortoise and a hare. The whole jungle was aware about their brotherhood and how they stuck together with each other no matter what. One fine day, when they were discussing about their respective speed, the hare made fun of the tortoise for being slower. Now, it is a well known fact that tortoises generally have a hard shell which makes it difficult for them to walk. But the hare continued to make fun of him. The tortoise got very angry and asked him to prove it. The hare, in turn, challenged the tortoise to run a race with him. Both of them agreed upon the date and time. The news was taken over to the king of the jungle, the lion. He chose a referee and announced the commencement of preparations. The entire jungle was excited as it was the first time that the two brothers were competing with each other. Days before the race, the hare went around talking high about himself whereas on the other hand, the tortoise practiced diligently. The night before the race, the tortoise slept on time, to be energetic the other day, whereas the hare continued to dream about him winning and how obvious it was that he needed no preparations. The wait was over, the tickets were completely sold out and the crowd was cheerful. Both the contestants stood ready on the starting line and the race was supposed to end at a stretch of one kilometre. The whistle blew and both started running at their own pace. The hare covered half the distance while the tortoise could only cover half of what the hare had covered. The overconfident hare thought of taking a nap and thought that by the time the tortoise would come near him, he would wake up and cover the rest of the distance. After some time, the hare was woken up by the sound of hooting and whistling, the tortoise had won.

Therefore, the moral of the story is, “Confidence is good, but overconfidence always sinks the ship”.

The City hummed with frantic life, even at night. I strolled along, enjoying the crowds, even the exhaust fumes which seemed to pervade everything. Suddenly, however, a stranger hurried up to me, pushed me back into the mouth of a dark alley, pulled a revolver from his coat pocket and waved it in my face. His eyes were wild-looking, and he growled at me: “So. So! It’s you, eh? I’ve finally found you!”

“You must be mistaken,” I said. “I don’t know you, sir. I’ve never seen you before.”

“Hah! That’s a laugh,” he said, waving the revolver about even more erratically. “I suppose you would say that. Well, I know you. Yes, I know you very well!”

And with that, he turned the gun upon himself and fired. He staggered away, fell half-slouched against a brick wall, his coat front and shirt blossoming in a dark splotch; his life’s blood flowing out.

Very quickly the police arrived, began investigating the crime scene, questioned me. Satisfied that I was an innocent victim, one of them showed me a piece of paper he had taken from the dead man’s hand. Written in the man’s blood was this message: “I KNOW YOU AND THE NEXT TIME I WILL GET YOU!”

“Do you have any idea what he meant by this?” the detective asked me.

“None at all,” I replied. “As I told you before, he seemed to think he knew me, but I had never seen this man until tonight.”

Upon returning home, I sold my shop and retired. I have never been back to The City.

How to write a 250-word essay?

When you are in school, in university, or any situation might have gotten a chance to write a 250-word essay. I think almost everybody has written at least one essay in their lifetime. So this article will be very helpful for many of you to know about the correct techniques to write an essay. First of all, when you got a topic for an essay, you should study about it. For example, if you have to write an essay about COVID’19, you can’t just write anything without doing a bit of research about it. When you are researching the subject, you will need to focus on the following things:

  • Find information through reliable information sources. For example, if you search for some topic related to the health sector, you can always go to research reports or abstracts published on the internet. So no doubt will be there for the accuracy of the information.
  • Find information relevant to the topic. Otherwise, your tie will be wasted on irrelevant information.
  • Get the most recent data if possible because most of the things can be changed with time. For example, if you refer to a research report published in 1968, it will contain some information that has been eliminated from modern scientific inventions. Therefore, you have to be updated about the topic. 
  • If you are getting the information from some person, make sure you contact a professional in the subject or someone who has learned about the subject to some extent. If not so the information may not be reliable. 
  • And also, there are official websites that you can get the information. Because there can be so much fake information on the internet, you will have to be cautious about the source of information you are referring to.  
  • Before starting writing, you have to plan the structure of the essay and organize the flow of the information. 

And then you can step on to the next step, which is writing the essay, of course.

When writing an essay, you should have some idea about the structure of an essay. Those are, 

INTRODUCTION:

So when writing the introduction, you have to get a clear approach on what topic you are going to write about. For a 250 words essay, a maximum of 50 words introduction will be adequate. So you don’t have to write in detail in the introduction. For example, if you are talking about “How COVID’19 affected the economy of the countries”, you can state the points such as,

  • What is COVID’19?
  • What kind of a disease is it?
  • A little bit about how it started and how it is spread like a pandemic?
  • How many countries have been affected by COVID’19?

So this is just an example. You can divide some points out of your topic to write as the introduction. Typically, the introduction of an essay should give the idea to anybody about the essay you are going to write. This is also called the thesis statement.  

When writing the introduction, you can add some spice to it by writing an interesting opening sentence. The opening sentence should be an attention grabber to persuade the reader to continue reading the essay. For example, if you are writing about “How COVID’19 affected the economy of the countries”, you can start the essay by,

  • Is COVID’19 an alien attack?
  • COVID’19 is not what you think it is!
  • COVID’19 can be the end of human civilization on earth!

You see. Now, if you write an essay starting with something like these points, who would neglect it? Anybody will pay attention to it. That needs your creativity skills. You should think out of the frame and try to deviate from a typical structure. After writing the opening sentence, you can continue writing the introduction with other basic points. 

Another fact is, sometimes you can start an essay with a saying of some legendary person, a proverb, or any part of a famous song or a literary masterpiece. This way, you can add some color to your essay. Ensure the part of a song you use is not the entire song but a matching part of the song that goes along with the topic. 

You can start an essay in a way you think is the most creative. But sometimes, there is a very formal and official type of essay that you will have to write. For such instances, the parts of songs and proverbs will not suit. So use common sense when writing an introduction as such. 

BODY PARAGRAPHS:

So when it comes to the body of the essay, this should be pretty informative and illustrated. Make sure you divide the body of the essay into few segments into different paragraphs. Before you write, you have to plan on what to write and the flow of the points you will write. For a 250 words essay, you can include about 100-150 words in the body. 

If you divide your body of the essay into three segments, the first paragraph has to be your strongest argument. The 2nd paragraph should be your second strongest argument. Your 3rd paragraph should include your weakest argument. Likewise, you should plan the essay to a flow. Well, some types of essays do not include arguments. So those types of essays can be divided according to the importance of the points according to the topic of the essay. 

Let’s take my example, “How COVID’19 affected the economy of the countries”. When I divide paragraphs I will consider,

  • What are the bad aspects of COVID’19?
  • How it affected the economy of the countries- with examples. 
  • What precautions have those countries taken to minimize those problems? 

Likewise, you can divide the information into points. When writing the details, make sure you write the correct details from reliable resources. Some statistics will add some color to your essay. When writing the statistic, you can use descriptive methods such as pie charts, bar charts, normal charts, scatter dot diagrams, etc. But,  If your topic doesn’t relate to statistics, if you are writing about just an informative essay, for example, “My pet,” “The advantages of water,” etc., you can divide your paragraphs according to different segments. 

For example, if you are writing about “Conservation of drinking water”, you can divide the paragraphs such as:

  • What are the resources that we get from drinking water?
  • What are the advantages of water for us?
  • How is the water get polluted?
  • What are the bad effects of water pollution?
  • What precautions have we taken to conserve water?
  • How can we conserve drinking water without polluting them?

You can divide the segments to a certain flow that the reader can get the ideas accordingly. When writing the body paragraphs, you should be cautious not to write too many irrelevant points and not deviate from the topic. You have to plan the structure of the essay with the information you have gathered according to the word count you have been asked to write. So when you are writing a 250 words paragraph, limit your words up to 50 to one paragraph to divide the body into 3 or 4 such paragraphs. Also, when writing the body paragraphs, you should start the next paragraph about the previous paragraph. If not so the reader can be confused. 

When talking about language skills, you can make an essay more interesting by adding conjunctions, adverbs, adjectives, proverbs, sayings of legendary people, a famous song related to the subject, etc. Your language skill is essential when you have to convey some message to the reader correctly. Sometimes a small word can misinterpret an entire idea. You should use the spaces between the words correctly as well. For example, The sentence “Life is nowhere” has a different idea than the sentence “Life is nowhere.” So you see how much impact a small space between the words can make. 

 Also, keep an eye on your punctuation marks. When using commas, full stops, exclamation marks, question marks, apostrophes, inverted commas, brackets, etc., make sure you add them to enhance the idea’s meaning and not misinterpret the idea. For example, The sentence, “Don’t hurt them” says not to hurt them, but the sentence “Don’t. Hurt them” says to hurt them. So you see how much small punctuation can do. So be cautious when using punctuations.

Although I cannot write every word, I think these words will help you to get some idea. When it comes to proverbs, you cannot use them in every situation. Make sure to put those in a matching instance so that your essay would not become odd. 

I will give you some common proverbs though.

  • Things past cannot be recalled
  • The busiest man finds the most leisure
  • Pleasure has a sting in its tail
  • The best fish swim in the bottom
  • Two wrongs don’t make right
  • A friend in need is a friend indeed
  • Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder
  • Practice makes perfect
  • Easy come, easy go
  • A cat in gloves catches no mice
  • A bargain is a bargain
  • A blind man would be glad to see
  • A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

So here are a few of them but you may know many more proverbs than these. So use the matching proverbs to make your essay more colorful. 

When talking about sayings from legendary people, there can be a lot. You can use matching sayings while writing an essay. For example, if you are writing about the conservation of nature, you can use sayings by chief Seattle. Also, if you are writing an essay about world peace, you can use sayings from Nelson Mandela. I’m not going to write them here as there are so many legendary people that you can take sayings from. Anyway, you can use any saying with a pair of inverted commas, and if you are typing the essay, you can use a slanted italic letter to write that part. And also, make sure to mention whom did you pick up the sentence from. For example:

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world

CONCLUSION:

When you are writing a conclusion to an essay, you can write your whole idea in summary. You can wrap up the essay by giving the good decisions you can make about it or any conclusions you can go into after writing the whole scenario. For example, if you are writing about “How COVID’19 affected the economy of the countries”, you can conclude the essay by,

  • How can the economic destruction be reversed?
  • What steps will make the world a better place
  • What health precautions should people take?
  • How can people stand against the COVID’19 spread?

Here you can uniquely restate the thesis. You can write the conclusion relevant to your topic. But also an important thing is you should stick to the word limit. If it’s a 250 words essay, you will have to summarize your essay to that limit. And also, make sure you end the essay with an attractive closing sentence. Again you can end the essay by writing a saying from a legendary person or a part of a song that matches the conclusion. Your creativity skills should be used in writing an essay. For example, if you are writing about “How COVID’19 affected the economy of the countries”, you can end the essay by writing the part of the song,

make it a better place.

for you, and for me, 

and the entire human race.

How it Works

The 4th Annual 250-word Microfiction Challenge is a competition that challenges writers around the world to create very short stories no longer than 250 words based on genre, action, and word assignments in 24 hours. In the 1st Round, beginning on November 18th, writers are placed randomly in groups and are assigned a genre, action, and word assignment.

Writers have 24 hours to craft an original 250-word story in their assigned genre, with the assigned action taking place, and incorporating the assigned word. The judges choose a top 10 in each group to advance to the 2nd Round where writers receive new assignments and again have 24 hours to craft original stories.

Judges select the top 5 writers in each group from the 2nd Round to advance to the Final Round of the competition where writers will receive their final assignment of the competition. Feedback from the judges is provided for every submission, and there are thousands in cash and prizes for the winners. Sound like fun? Join the competition below and get ready for November 18th!

It was a dark and stormy moonlit night. Captain and Mrs Jenkins were driving in their horse-drawn carriage towards their remote, lonely home. The Captain’s face was hard and dark as he shouted at the horses to run faster and faster along the track through the bare trees. As the moon lit his wife’s pale face, you could see that she had once been a beautiful girl. Now it was the face of a woman who had seen too much unhappiness and had known too much fear.
Arabella thought back to happier days. It hadn’t always been like this. When they met and fell in love, the Captain had been the most handsome man in London and they had been the happiest young couple anyone knew. They had gone to dances and parties until, one terrible day in 1876, their world had fallen apart and they had left London and their families and friends for ever.
