«I met Sara today, your would-be wife.»
«I met Sara today, your wife to-be.»

So in the first example, Sara would like to be your wife or simply will never be for some reason, while in the second, Say will soon be your wife. Am I right?

Correct. Your wife to be means Your future wife.

(Of course, there is nothing certain about the future. :))

And do these two make sense?

«We sell all sorts of things for parents-to-be.» (for those already expecting a child, being pregnant)
«We offer help for would-be parents» (For those who have trouble getting pregnant)

They make sense, although your explanation of would-be does not cover all possibilities.
For example, they may simply want/desire to be parents (and decide to adopt a child from a foreign country — pregnancy does not come into it).

    (Note all sorts of things)

And can I say «This is a great school for would-be artists.»? Doesn’t it sound like those who attend would love to be artists but they will/may never be?

    e2efour

    • #7

If you are not an artist and your aim is to become one, would-be artist is neutral. You may never become one, of course.
But the adjective can be used in a derogatory way, meaning someone who does not have the ability to achieve their goal.
    For example, a would-be writer.

If you are not an artist and your aim is to become one, would-be artist is neutral.

So that example with school is fine, right?

    e2efour

    • #9

It depends on the context, but I would not understand it as derogatory or that they are chasing an impossible goal. They simply desire to become artists.

To me, a ‘would-be X’ is a person who would like to be an X. There’s no way of knowing whether that will happen.
A person who is an ‘X-to-be’ will be an X unless something really unusual happens.

A parent-to-be is a person who is pregnant (or whose spouse is pregnant) or who is well along in the process of adoption.
A would-be artist is someone who wants to be an artist. Whether they have any skill or talent is unknown.

An indulgent grandmother who says «Look at that blue scribble my grandson made on the wall! It is so evocative of the immensity of the universe! He is definitely an artist-to-be.» is fantasizing.

Longman gives this short phrase as an example, «a would-be murderer». Now does that person see themselves as a future/potential murderer or do other people see them that way and think he or she might be able to kill?

    e2efour

    • #12

I find it hard to find a context for a would-be murderer, since why would anyone wish to appear to others to be a murderer.
The first definition in the OED is Of persons: That would be; wishing to be; posing as.

The last phrase (posing as) could mean pretending to be. But again why should anyone pretend to be this?

The only meaning I can attach to the phrase is someone who wants to kill someone else, or who tries to kill someone and does not succeed.
This is one of the examples I found on the internet (my underlining):

«But what about lying to prevent someone from being killed? Suppose that a

    would-be murderer

    comes to our door

and they are looking for a person they intend to kill, who happens to be hiding in our house. They ask us if we know

where that person is. Should we tell them the truth or a lie?»

If a person’s ambition is to murder people, then they are a would-be murderer in their own mind. A person who engages in an act that will result in murder is a would-be murderer if they are stopped before dealing the fatal blow.

«But what about lying to prevent someone from being killed? Suppose that a

    would-be murderer

    comes to our door

and they are looking for a person they intend to kill. «

In Polish we would say «a potential murderer comes…». Would that fit and mean the same?

In the US, I’ve seen the term would be X referring to something that would have, under given circumstances, been something, but for some reason, it didn’t come to be this way. For example, a would be doctor might refer to someone who was studying and was ready to receive their doctorate, but then suffered an accident that caused this person to miss their final exam, thus (in this case, temporarily) denying them this status.

In that sense, I don’t believe that in the case of certain future marriage, you can use this idiomatically to mean husband/wife to be. But as far as your second question, the term X to be can be applied to anything that will become that thing.

Here’s a short, quick list of examples using X to be:

    Graduate to be
Someone who will soon graduate from a university

    Husband to be
A man who will soon be married

    Lawyer to be
Someone who, presumably, will become a lawyer in the near future

    …and so on.

Keep in mind that here, using X to be, you are referring to a title, status, or other such stature. Adjectives don’t work there. It is unnatural to say happy to be, for example, with this meaning.
