If there is one thing we have noticed over the past 10 years in school, it is the spelling of our students. It has seemed like the students coming to us are having such a difficult time knowing how to spell words. We have been strong advocates for what we call “Word Work”: breaking words down into patterns and using them correctly in context.
We have developed four resources that will help you teach word work and spelling to your students in a fun and engaging way. No more pre-test Mondays and post-test Fridays! That is a thing of the past!
Here are the resources that will be of benefit to you in the classroom:
1. Word Work Activity Cards
This resource contains 18 word work activities for your students to use with any activity involving the use of words for better comprehension and understanding. The cards include working with homonyms and homographs, synonyms and antonyms, prefixes and suffixes, word find puzzle, writing a song, rhyming words, and much more.
Also included in the document is a handy check off sheet so you know what choice your students have made with the activities.
2. Word Work Spelling Choices
With this activity, students will have fun being able to make choices during the week. Instead of assigning your students with the same activity each day, give them choice of how they want to show that they are mastering the spelling patterns. There are nine choices on the sheet in a tic tac toe format. Enjoy!
3. Word Work Task Cards: Four Pictures Equals One Word
The intention of this activity is to have students think about words and the letter combinations that make up words.
- There are 50 “Challenge” cards included. The cards work best if they are printed off on a heavier paper and then laminated. The cards can also be bound together for a station or they can be stacked loosely also- whatever works best for you.
- Each card contains four pictures. Students are to look at the pictures and decide what they have in common. The letters to choose from are listed towards the bottom of each card. For most cards, not all 11 letters will be used. The number of letters in the word are located at the very bottom of each card.
4. Word Work 10 Day Spelling Program
Here is a great resource to use when teaching your students patterns in spelling or word work.
Here’s what is included:
1. Description cards for students that include the task that they have to do for each of the 10 days.
2. A student packet where the students show evidence of their word work or spelling that you can collect.
3. A quiz on Day 10 to check accuracy and mastery of a spelling pattern.
These resources have helped our students become better spellers, and we know they will help your students too!

Today, a Work on Words topic that I am extremely passionate about… Small Groups!
The question I have been asked the most over the years by other teachers is, «How do you find the time to differentiate Word Work for your students and still teach everything else?» Short answer — I use the time I am already meeting with them in Guided Reading groups.
(For a post about my Guided Reading guide and a freebie, check here, then come back!)
Here’s a peek at the way I structure my Guided Reading time with struggling readers (30 minutes, at least 4 times per week):
5 minutes — Fluency and/or Book Conferences
10 minutes — Word Work
15 minutes — Guided Reading (Before/During/After strategies included)
Note: This is how I structure my time with Struggling Readers. In my classroom, fair doesn’t mean equal, and I am going to work with students on what they need.
Here’s the structure for Guided Reading with on-level or above-level readers (20 minutes, 2 times per week):
3 minutes — Book Conferences
7 minutes — Word Work
10 minutes — Guided Reading (B/D/A strategies, with short sections of the selected text — assignments given for next time we meet)
During that designated Word Work time, work with the group on whatever they need. (For help identifying the needs in your students, you may want to read my blog series about Supporting Struggling Readers in Grades 3-5.)
Let the needs of your students dictate the material you cover during this short, focused Word Work lesson. Some suggestions for struggling readers:

On a personal note: I know that this year (2013) is a rough year for teachers throughout the United States. Teacher pay is down, morale is low, and you are consistently being told how to best do your job by people who haven’t set foot in a classroom in at least 5 years. High-stakes testing is taking over the schools, and the impact is being felt even in Kindergarten and First grade classrooms. Please know that I understand, and I hope you are able to keep your classroom environment positive for both you and your students. Seek out help if you need it, and continue to seek help if the first «solution» didn’t work. Your profession is truly important, one that every person called to teach should feel proud of. As a teacher, a Literacy specialist, a parent, and a taxpayer, I appreciate the work you do every day. Thank you!!
