A game of Words with Friends
Words with Friends is a multiplayer word game developed by Newtoy. Players take turns building words crossword-puzzle style in a manner similar to the classic board game Scrabble. The rules of the two games are similar, but Words with Friends is not associated with the Scrabble brand. Up to 40 games can be played simultaneously using push notifications to alert players when it is their turn. Players may look up friends either by username or through Facebook, or be randomly assigned an opponent through «Smart Match». Players can also find potential opponents using Community Match.
Released in July 2009, Words with Friends is available for cross-platform play on devices running the operating systems Android, Windows Phone, and iOS (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch).[1] The game is also available on Facebook,[2] Kindle Fire,[3] and Nook Tablet.[4] In addition, there is a chat feature built into the game that allows opponents to exchange messages. Between 2010 and 2011, Words with Friends was one of the top ranking games in the iOS app store, available as both a free ad-supported version and a paid version with no «third party ads between turns».[5][6] As of May 2017, Words with Friends was the most popular mobile game in the United States.[7] A sequel to the game, Words with Friends 2, came out in September 2017.
Gameplay[edit]

The rules of the game are mostly the same as those of two-player Scrabble, with a few differences such as the arrangement of premium squares and the distribution and point values of some of the letters (see Scrabble letter distributions and point values). Players are given seven randomly chosen letter tiles, which are replenished until all 104 tiles have been used. Players take turns forming words on the board or, instead of playing a word, may also choose to swap tiles with the pool of currently unused tiles or pass their turn. Players can form words either vertically or horizontally on the board. The player’s aim is to score as many points as possible.
A letter placed on a DL or TL square doubles or triples the value of that letter on all words formed using that square. Similarly, the DW and TW squares double and triple the value of the new word(s) using that square. If a player uses all seven tiles on a single play (known as a bingo in Scrabble), 35 bonus points are added — this contrasts with the 50 bonus points in Scrabble.
The different arrangement of premium squares can lead to scoring situations that would be rare or impossible in a typical Scrabble game. For example, it is possible to place a new word that simultaneously covers a triple letter score (TL) and a triple word score (TW), or a new word that covers a double word score (DW) and a triple word score (TW), which would be impossible or nearly impossible in a Scrabble game.
The game ends when a player plays every tile in his or her rack, and there are no remaining tiles to draw. The game also ends if three scoreless moves (i.e., passes or tile exchanges) are played in succession, unless the score is zero-zero.[8] After playing the last tile, the opposing player will lose all the points equal to the amount of the remaining tiles. This number of points will be awarded to the player who played the last tile. At the end of the game, the player with the highest score wins.
There are various versions of Words With Friends. All versions allow players to resign their turn with the «resign» feature, pass their turn with the «pass» feature, swap out one or more tiles and forfeit the current turn with the «swap» feature, or look up what tiles remain with the «tile bag» feature. The «word strength» feature can be turned on or off, and enables players to see how strong their placed word is relative to all other word combinations available on the current board. In 2016, Zynga (temporarily) removed a feature called «hindsight» which allowed a player to pay for the opportunity to see what the highest-scoring moves on the board were after the play was made, but has since brought it back. In addition to the «hindsight» power-up, the game also offers other power-ups known as «swap+,» «word radar,» and «word clue.»[9]
Words with Friends accepts 173,000 words in the game. The word list used by the game is based on the Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon (ENABLE), with some additions from the developers.[8]
Random opponent and chat features[edit]
Since the game’s launch, the random opponent and chat features of the game have led to a number of romantic relationships. In 2009, Megan Lawless, of Chicago, began a game with a random opponent, Jasper Jasperse, who lived in the Netherlands. The two got to know one another via the game’s chat function and married in July 2011.[10][11]
Other couples who met via the game’s random opponent feature include Trish and David Palmer of Dacula, Georgia, who married in November 2011, and Stephen Monahan and Britney Hilbun of Texas, who became engaged to marry in December 2011.[12]
In late 2011, it was reported that one of the game’s American players was communicating via the game’s chat function about her Australian opponent’s husband’s medical symptoms. The American relayed these symptoms to her husband, a doctor, who recommended an immediate hospital visit. The opponent’s husband found he had a 99% blockage close to his heart. On a 2012 episode of the American TV show, The Doctors, the couples were introduced to each other for the first time.[13][14]
The board game[edit]
In 2012, Zynga, in conjunction with Hasbro, released several physical board game versions of Words with Friends under the «Hasbro Gaming» imprint. These include a standard version, a «Luxe» edition with rotating fitted tile gameboard (similar to the deluxe editions of Scrabble), and a «To Go» travel edition.[15][16][17]
This is one of several games in the Zynga game library to be released as physical board game versions. Others include Draw Something, a CityVille edition of Monopoly, and several kids’ games based on FarmVille.[18]
Privacy issues[edit]
In October 2019, it was announced that the hack of social game developer Zynga had compromised the details of 218 million Words with Friends accounts. Details accessed include players’ names, email addresses, login IDs, hashed passwords, password reset tokens, phone numbers, Facebook IDs and Zynga account IDs.[19]

Words with Friends is an application that basically functions as an online version of Scrabble. If you know how to play the classic word search game, you will probably pick up Words with Friends very quickly. However, whether you’re a Scrabble veteran or completely new to this type of game, there are a variety of tips and strategies you can use to maximize the number of points you score each game.

Download the smartphone app if you want to play on your phone. Go to the App Store if your phone uses iOS or to the Google Play store if it’s an Android phone. Then, search “Words with Friends” and click the “Get” button to download the app to your phone.[1]
- Once you’ve downloaded the app to your phone, simply click on the Words with Friends icon to open the app and play it.

Use Facebook if you want to play Words with Friends on the computer. Log into your Facebook account and go to the App Center, which you can find in the menu to the left of your feed. On the left sidebar, search for “Words with Friends” and install the app.[2]
- Click “Play Game” to start a new game once you’ve downloaded the app.

Tap the “+” icon in the top right corner to start a new game. Once you’ve started a new game, you can choose to play either with a Facebook friend, a random user, or the person sitting next to you. To go with this last option, you’ll have to physically pass your smartphone to the other player after each turn, so the game is only accessible from your phone.[3]
- If you download Words with Friends 2, you will also have the option of playing against a computer opponent.
- Words with Friends will suggest friends for you to play with, but you can start a game with anyone if you’d rather play a random opponent.

Click and drag letter tiles to the board to play them and make words. You can create a word by placing your letters either vertically or horizontally on the board. However, you are not allowed to play the following types of words: proper nouns, abbreviations, prefixes and suffixes standing alone, or words that require a hyphen or an apostrophe.[4]
- With the exception of the first word, every word that you play must be placed so that at least 1 letter tile is shared with a word that has already been placed on the board.
- Note that you can’t play a word if it will create an illegal word using neighboring letters. For instance, you can’t play the word “CAT” if the “T” tile is placed next to another “T” tile, since “TT” is not a legal word.
- When you play a letter, you earn a number of points equal to the number in the top right corner of the letter tile. Thus, when you play a word, you earn the sum total of all the letters you played to make that word.

Play a word with at least 1 letter on the middle tile to start the game. Whoever plays the first word in a round of Words with Friends has to place at least 1 of the letters in that word on the star tile in the middle of the board. Note that it can be any letter in the word; in other words, your word doesn’t necessarily have to begin from the star tile.[5]
- For example, if your first word is “CAT,” you can place either the “C,” “A,” or “T” tile on the star.

Build new words off of the letters on the board when it’s your turn. If you played the first word, then your opponent will place a word on the board that connects to your word. When it’s your turn, place a word down that connects to either the first word you played or to the new word that your opponent played.[6]
- Note that before you begin your turn, you will be given new letter tiles so that you have 7 on your rack.

Go back and forth between the 2 of you until the game is over. A game of Words with Friends ends when 1 player has played all of their letter tiles and there are no more new letter tiles to be given. At that point, each player’s score is tallied and the player with the highest score wins.[7]
- Note that if either player has leftover tiles at the end of the game, that player will lose points equal to the sum of the value of those leftover tiles.

Place your letters in ways that limit your opponent’s ability to score. Winning at Words with Friends is not only about scoring points for yourself, but also playing defense and preventing your opponent from scoring. When you play your letters, try to position the tiles so that your opponent doesn’t have access to the lucrative colored tiles on the board.
- To do this, avoid playing words next to double- or triple-word tiles. Although this may mean you have to play a word for a lower score somewhere else, it also keeps your opponent from being able to play these high-value tiles.

Memorize different 2-letter words you can play across other words. Playing 2-letter words, especially with valuable letters, enables you to essentially rack up points by only playing in 2- or 4-tile squares. This is not only more efficient for you, but also makes it harder for your opponent to play off of your words.[8]
- Some examples of 2-letter words you might be able to play include “XI,” “EX,” and “PI.”

Look for opportunities to play your letters on the colored squares. You earn extra points by placing your letters strategically on the colored tiles of the board. These tiles will earn you double or triple points, either for the letter that is played on that tile, or for the entire word that you played.[9]
- Double- and triple-word squares are usually the most valuable colored tiles on the board.
- If you have a high-value letter tile, like “X” or “Z,” playing this tile on a double- or triple-letter tile is also a good way to rack up extra points.

Try to play all 7 of your letters at once whenever possible. This is called a “Bingo” and it allows you get all the points in your 7 letters, plus a 35-point bonus. Memorize some common 7-letter words or simply play a lot of Words with Friends until you get better at spotting Bingo opportunities.

Play your letters along words that are on the board to get more points. For example, if you have the letters to spell “POWER” and the word “AROSE” is already on the board, don’t play your letters vertically to use the “R” in “AROSE.” Instead, play your letters along the top of “AROSE,” so that you also spell “PA,” “OR,” “WO,” “ES,” and “RE.”
- When you play words along other words, you tend to get a lot more points. Note, however, that this only works if you’re able to spell legal 2-letter words with the letters that you play.

Two official versions of Scrabble are available on Facebook, one for residents of the U.S. and Canada and the other for residents of other countries. A third Scrabble-like game, Lexulous, is also available. (Lexulous was known as Scrabulous until lawsuits were filed against the creators by both Hasbro and Mattel.) Free registration is required to join Facebook. To play without ads, you must pay a fee. An ad loads after every turn if you don’t pay for the ad-free version. You are able to compete against your friends, track your Scrabble ELO rating, customize your board and tiles, and pick up gameplay where you left off on your smartphone or tablet. You can also play against a random opponent or turn on speed play.

You can also play Words with Friends on Facebook, powered by Zynga. You can start a game and notify a Facebook friend, or let the game match you up with someone.

In addition to being available at Facebook, Lexulous can be played at Lexulous.com. You can join a room to play with other players or elect to play a robot. There is also an option where you can watch other players play and learn their strategies. Free registration is required to join Lexulous.com. You can join using your Facebook profile if you prefer.

Pogo.com, run by Electronic Arts, is an official place to play Scrabble. Two versions are available: classic Scrabble (for two to four players) and Scrabble Blast (a solo game fairly described as Scrabble meets Boggle). Free registration is required to join Pogo.com. You can join using your Facebook profile if you prefer. You can play with friends online. To play ad-free, you must upgrade to Club Pogo.
You earn tokens from playing and have a chance to win prizes and drawings. Pogo has options for playing alone, challenging up to three opponents, choosing from five skill levels, opponent matching by skill level, and using traditional rules, house rules, or selecting rules a la carte.

Play the free Scrabble Sprint online game without registration on the Merriam-Webster site. You make words one at a time against the clock to fill up all of the spaces on the board. You click or type a word with two or more letters, with bonus points for more time left on the timer.

Words With Friends 2: Гайд для новичков
Words With Friends 2 компании Zynga. Это продолжение знаменитой Игры слов с друзьями, которая набрала огромную популярность на фейсбуке. Не меньшие число поклонников есть и у мобильной версии WWF2. К сожалению, в игре нет русского языка, но она имеет большую популярность у нас в стране. На ней, как на симуляторе, можно оттачивать знание английского и других, встроенных в игру, языков. Преимущество данного вида Скрэббла состоит в том, что в нее можно поиграть не только с другими игроками, но и создать командные битвы, а также развлечься с искусственным интеллектом. Стоит отметить, что ИИ в игре наделен богатым словарным запасом, поэтому не стоит считать матчи с компьютером легкой победой.
Старт игры
Для того, чтобы запустить игру, необходимо нажать на «плюсик» в правом нижнем углу экрана. Если вы играете с iPad в ландшафтном режиме, то на вашем экране в этом месте будет кнопка «Создать игру». После чего перед вами появиться выбор режимов игры:
- See Who’s Playing — здесь можно найти игроков, которые есть в сети (или уже добавленных друзей), чтобы создать с ними партию.
- Lightning Round — режим командной игры, где вы со случайно выбранными пользователями ведете интеллектуальный бой с командой других геймеров.
- Practice Mode — режим практики, то есть игра с ИИ.
Вы будете перенаправлены на страницу, основанную на выбранном вами игровом режиме. Lightning Round приведет вас в лобби (предыгровое окно), а затем непосредственно в режим матча и практики, который поможет вам улучшить свои навыки, не влияя на вашу статистику.
После того, как перед вами появиться игровое поле, вам требуется создать слово. Любая 1 буква слова должна лечь на плюсовую плитку. Следующие слова должны соединяться с ранее написанными.
Когда вы придумаете слово, следует тапнуть по кнопке «Play». В этот момент вашему сопернику придет push — уведомление. Вам также будут приходить сообщения, когда наступит время вашего хода. В режимах «Solo Challenge» и «Lightning Round» нет уведомлений.
Начисление очков. Очки зарабатываются в том случае, если вы победите соперника набрав больше очков, чем ваш противник. Во время матча вы получаете очки за каждое слово, плюс бонусы, которые дают подписанные слоты на поле. Для составления слова у вас есть внизу окна 7 плиток. Если вы все их используете, то есть напишите слово из 7 букв, то получите 35 дополнительных очков. Термин, обозначающий данное действие, называется «Бинго».
Гораздо труднее сделать бинго в конце игры, потому что доска заполнена больше, чем в начале. Если вы видите слово из 6 букв, следует постараться сохранить эти буквы, особенно без буквы S, тогда вы можете добавить букву S в конце слова.
Бонусные ячейки:
- DL — в 2 раза увеличивает значение плитки.
- TL — в 3 раза повышает значение плитки.
- DW — в 2 раза увеличивает значение слова.
- TW — в 3 раза повышает значение слова.
Для того, чтобы увеличить бонусные очки, рекомендуется составлять слово так, чтобы использовать максимально возможное количество бонусных слотов.
Игра заканчивается, когда вы играете все свои плитки или, когда вы, или ваш друг используете «пас» 3 раза подряд. Если вы используете все свои плитки сначала, вы получаете очки от плиток в стойке вашего друга, добавленные к вашему окончательному счету.
Правила:
- Первое слово должно быть расположено так, чтобы 1 из букв разместилась на звезде в центре доски.
- Каждое слово, следующее за этим, должно быть помещено так, чтобы, по крайней мере, 1 плитка была разделена с существующим словом на доске.
- Буквы слова могут быть размещены только в одной вертикальной или горизонтальной линии каждый ход.

Как закрыть матч? Играть одновременно можно в несколько матчей в разных режимах. Для того, чтобы покинуть один из раундов, вам требуется зайти в него и щелкнуть по кнопке «More» (три белые горизонтальные линии), щелкнуть по белому флагу. Затем нужно выбрать команду «Resign».
Есть еще один момент, если противник не делает ход длительное время, матч прекращается автоматически. Например, если соперник не делает ход 5 дней, то на 6 игра будет закрыта системой.
Какие слова можно использовать в матче? Не все слова, которые есть в словарях представленных языков можно использовать:
- Имена собственные (слова всегда пишутся с большой буквы).
- Аббревиатуры.
- Приставки и суффиксы, стоящие отдельно.
- Слова, требующие дефиса или апострофа.
- Уничижительные слова или оскорбления.
Игровые функции (их можно использовать, зайдя в меню «More»)
- Store — можно купить дополнительные опции и бонусы.
- Dictionary — словарь, с его помощью можно подобрать слова, если у вас возникли трудности.
- Tile Bag — показывает оставшиеся бонусы.
- Pass — пропуск хода.
- Swap — вместо хода можно поменять местами ненужные плитки.
Как поднять свой рейтинг? Вы можете увидеть свой рейтинг в игре, нажав на значок турнирной таблицы (Standings) в нижней части экрана.
Здесь можно увидеть ваш текущий рейтинг в общем количестве баллов, средний балл по словам. А также ваш личный рейтинг по отношению к другим игрокам, с которыми вы когда-либо соревновались. Очки начисляются за все проведенные вами игры на всех языках, на которых играли. Очки лидерства обновляются еженедельно в воскресенье.

Words With Friends 2: Советы по ведению матча
- Напишите слово на двух DW в пределах пяти точек друг от друга у края доски. Это даст вам больше очков.
- Написать маленькое слово поверх плитки TW лучше, чем уступить его своему противнику.
- Можно использовать префиксы, которые меняют значение слова. Префикс (приставка) — это небольшая часть слова (в основном, приставка), стоящая перед корнем и изменяющая его лексическое и грамматическое значение. - PFFT, BRRR и PSST — это все допустимые четырехбуквенные слова без гласных.
- Плитки, оставшиеся на вашей стойке в конце игры, считаются против вас. Поэтому необходимо следить, чтобы к окончанию матча у вас не оставалось свободных букв (или их было как можно меньше).
- В словаре игры есть 101 двухбуквенное слово. Можно воспользоваться словарем, чтобы узнать, какие слова можно использовать. Но в словаре нет таких слов с буквой «С». Не забывайте это!

Solo Challenge

Вы не можете удалить стиль плитки, но можете отказаться от его использования. К сожалению, ежедневное окрашивание букв, в данный момент, невозможно.
В Профиле вы можете установить ваш любимый цвет, тогда, при открытии тайных коробок, вы с большим шансом будете получать именно ваш любимый тон.
Для сбора определенного цвета, вам требуется вначале разблокировать его. Это можно сделать, открывая таинственные коробки. Если у вашего друга уже есть ваш любимый тон, но вы его еще не получили, не стоит отчаиваться. Следует дальше открывать призы, и однажды вы получите необходимый вам цвет.
Words With Friends 2: Настройка учетной записи
Вход или создание учетной записи. Чтобы зарегистрировать ваш игровой аккаунт в системе, необходимо привязать его к учетной записи на Facebook или через вашу электронную почту.

Если немного прокрутить бегунок вниз, то появиться статистические данные его игры.
Как заблокировать пользователя? Часто игроки, по каким-либо причинам, хотят ограничить свое общение с другим геймером. Так как в игре практически все матчи проходят в PvP, то разработчики предусмотрели возможность блокировки игроков. Для того что заблокировать игрока, необходимо выполнить следующие действия:
- Необходимо зайти в Настройки в Профиле.
- Затем прокрутить пункты меню вниз до опции «Управление списком блокировок» в разделе Конфиденциальность (Manage Block List).
- После этого действия откроется страница блокировки пользователей.
- Здесь вы можете выбрать игроков, с которыми у вас недавно был матч, из выпадающего списка «Выбрать пользователя» или ввести их имя игрока в окне «ввести имя пользователя».
- Затем следует нажать на кнопку «Заблокировать пользователя».
В этом же меню можно сообщить о нарушениях любого игрока, просто нажав на кнопку с 3 полосками в правом верхнем углу. После чего появиться контекстное меню, где необходимо выбрать пункт «Report Abuse» (Сообщить о злоупотреблении).

It pays to begin the game with a 2 letter or 5 letter word. If you go with two letters, you can get rid of your least desirable tiles right at the beginning of the game. If you go for five letters, your opponent will create a lay along, following your word. This way, you can score single for your word.
Tip #2: Make Use of Colored Squares
Play your tiles on the colored squares to make the most of the bonus points. You will be able to score more points by playing DL, DW, TL and TW squares. For example, if you make the word Park on four blank squares, you will get 11 points. But if your «P» is on a TL and «K» on a TW, then you can win 57 points.
Tip #3: Use Functional Words
If you want to score more points, memorize some 2 to 3 letter words. Also, put stress on words with vowels and the letters J, Q, X, and Z.

Try to play towards the center to prevent your opponent from getting big scoring opportunities. Don’t let your opponent take advantage of the outer four rows and columns where TL and TW combinations are more of a possibility.

Your opponent will look to score big points just like you by using bonuses and multipliers. So your aim should be to limit opening to the colored squares where it would be advantageous for your opponent. You can make a lesser word in some other part of the board unless you are sure of scoring big.

1. Create a Game!
Search for a random opponent, connect to Facebook, or ask a friend for their username!
2. Take Your Turn
Create a word on the board by placing tiles vertically or horizontally. First word in the game goes on the plus tile.
Additional words must connect to previously played words.
Shuffle the tiles in your rack by shaking your device.

If you don’t like your tiles, you can use a turn to exchange them. |

When you’ve got a word ready, tap play and we’ll send it to your friend. |

While you’re waiting for your friend to play, you can send them a message. |

3. Scoring Points & Winning
You win the game by scoring more points than your friend!
You get points for each word you create based on the value of the tiles used in the word.
You get 35 extra points if you play all 7 tiles in one move!
Play words on the colored squares on the board to get bonus points.

Try combining more than one bonus to get a lot of points.

The game ends when you play all your tiles or when you or your friend use «pass» 3 times in a row.
If you use your tiles first, you get the points from the tiles in your friend’s rack added to your final score.
4. Final Tips
Tiles can be placed so that multiple new words are formed simultaneously using neighboring letters. You’ll score points for each new word created during a turn!
These words aren’t accepted in the game:

Proper nouns (words always capitalized)

Abbreviations

Prefixes and suffixes standing alone

Words requiring a hyphen or an apostrophe

Derogatory words and racial slurs
To delete a finished game from the menu, (iPhone / iPad) swipe across it or (Android) press and hold it and tap «Delete.»
You can end a game early if it’s your turn. Tap «Resign»
If it’s not your turn and your friend stops playing the game will be resigned automatically after a reasonable amount of time.
Use Settings to change your Games With Friends username, log in with Facebook, set a password (required if you log in on a new device) or add a phone number (required creating for Contact List games).
