Check Out The Word Under The Street!

In addition to all the fantastic programming taking place around Library Square on Sunday, September 30, be sure to check out The Word Under The Street, located inside the library and down the stairs. You’ll discover interesting visual displays in the moat, exciting exhibitors and workshops in the Alice MacKay Room, author presentations in Word Talks (Alma VanDusen Room), and panels in Writing Talks (Peter Kaye Room).
As you enter The Word Under The Street, you will be greeted by some outstanding visual displays. Ricepaper magazine presents “Real Live Love Letters,” which is a display of actual love letters. If you feel inspired to write your own, you can join the Love Letter workshop with Ricepaper‘s Ray Hsu at 11:00 in Writing Talks. Also on display will be images from the Sad Mag Sea Legs pinhole photography workshop conducted with queer youth in partnership with QMunity. If you want to try your hand at making your own pinhole camera, you will find camera-building stations in the Magazine Life Tent during Sad Mag‘s presentation from 2:00 to 3:00.
The Alice MacKay Room plays host to a variety of exhibitors including independent comic book artists, illustrators, publishers, and more. You can also check out the Carnegie Centre Chapbook Exhibition and Sale, where chapbooks created at the Carnegie Centre workshop on Saturday, September 29, will be on display and up for sale. In addition to browsing all the fabulous booths, you will also have the chance to take a workshop with established comic book artists:
11:00-12:00 – “DIY Comic Workshop” with Gord Hill
1:00-2:00 – “Cartooning Workshop” with Robin Thompson (ages 11-16)
3:00-4:00 – “Creating a Silent Comic” with Peter Bagge
Author presentations, panels, and workshops will take place in Word Talks, located in the Alma VanDusen Room. Join authors Susan Safyan, Lisa Anne Smith, Sam Bradd & Robin Folvik, and Darren Fleet for presentations about their latest books; learn how to write your memoir with Naomi Beth Wakan; take in a panel regarding orality and storytelling; and join Canadian Authors Association members Patrick Taylor and Dennis E. Bolen for a reading.
Writing Talks, located in the Peter Kaye Room, will also be full of excellent workshops and panels. Learn how to write a love letter with Ricepaper‘s Ray Hsu, discover the practice of prolific poetry with Madeline Sonik, witness a panel regarding the role of villains and politics in storytelling, and listen in as the professionals discuss how ideas become non-fiction stories.

The Word On The Street Returns This Month!

In just 3 weeks, Western Canada’s largest celebration of words and reading returns for its 18th year! Join us for a weekend jam-packed with FREE readings, workshops, entertainment, and more from Friday, September 28, to Sunday, September 30. As the festival draws near, we will be sharing all kinds of details about it here on the blog, so be sure to stay tuned!
On Friday, September 28, join us at Banyen Books & Sound for a talk and book signing with Peter Zuckerman & Amanda Padoan, authors of Buried in the Sky: The Extraordinary Story of the Sherpa Climbers on K2’s Deadliest Day, or at Historic Joy Kogawa House for an evening with playwright Marcus Youssef as he previews two of his upcoming premieres – Winners and Losers and How Has My Love Affected You?
On Saturday, September 29, we will return to Carnegie Centre for a day full of workshops and readings. Create your own chapbook with Mercedes Eng, learn how to do your best live reading with Hal Wake, join the DTES Poets for Open-Mic Poetry Night, and more! There will also be a workshop on writing, translation, and copyright held in the Alma VanDusen Room of the VPL Central Branch.
We will be back at Library Square and CBC Plaza on Sunday, September 30, for the main festival day you all know and love! Explore the extensive Exhibitor Marketplace, where you will find a variety of writing and publishing related vendors located at tables and tents all over the festival grounds, including inside the library in the promenade and downstairs in The Word Under The Street. From publishers and literacy organizations to magazines and independent comic book artists, you will find freebies, merchandise, great info, and more in the bustling Marketplace!
Take in a reading at one of our many author tents, and be sure to bring or purchase a book to have signed by your favourite author! Here are just a few of the authors appearing at this year’s festival: Annabel Lyon, VPL Writer-in Residence Meredith Quartermain, Chris Gudgeon, Arthur Black, George Bowering, WP Kinsella, Daniel Zomparelli, and Billeh Nickerson. There are many more booked, so be sure to visit our website or pick up a copy of the official program guide from your local library, bookstore, or coffee shop for a full list.
In addition to readings, you can also join an author for a workshop in Word Talks or Writing Talks. Learn to write your memoir with Naomi Beth Wakan, how to compose a love letter with Ricepaper‘s Ray Hsu, the practice of prolific poetry with Madeline Sonik, and more!
There is also plenty of magazine programming at this year’s festival. As always, the Magazine Life Tent will feature a wide variety of informative presentations, including “How To Make Your Home Magazine Beautiful” with Western Living‘s Nicole Sjostedt and “Cheap Eats: Healthy Eating on a Budget” with Health Action Magazine contributor Sondi Bruner, as well as panels and other magazine-related discussions and presentations. You will also find literary magazine contributors reading in the Poetry and Authors Tents.
For the comic, zine, and graphic novel enthusiast, be sure to check out The Word Under The Street, inside the library and downstairs in the Alice MacKay Room. In addition to visiting with the awesome exhibitors, you will also have the chance to learn from the experts! Peter Bagge, Robin Thompson, and Gord Hill will each give a one-hour workshop, so be sure to arrive early to ensure your spot!
In addition to all the fantastic literary events at The Word On The Street, you will also find some great entertainment on the Mainstage. With the Carnival Band, Ukesters, Vancouver Youth Poetry Slam Team, Upbeats, and more, there will be plenty of fun performances for the whole family to enjoy!
Speaking of families, there is definitely plenty of programming and activities perfect for you and your kids! Visit the Kids Tent for author readings, the Family Stage for more performances, and the Family Literacy Tent for your chance to make a collage button and to try your hand at soapstone carving. There are also young adult readings in the Authors Tent!

There’s Something for Everyone

From race horses to politics, to stories of the hippie days, suffragettes to road trips, squeezeboxes to love letters, and much more, Vancouver’s The Word On The Street is back for its 18th year with three days (September 28-30) of reading and writing excitement!
The main festival day is Sunday, September 30, where word lovers will find author readings, writing and publishing exhibits, musical entertainment, roving performers, children’s activities, workshops, panels, books and magazines, and more in and around Library Square and CBC Plaza, Homer and Hamilton Streets between Robson and Georgia.
Friday night programming (September 28) will take place at Banyen Books and Historic Joy Kogawa House, and Saturday programming (September 29) takes place at Carnegie Centre (Main and Hastings).
Highlights include readings by (among approximately 100 authors!) Annabel Lyon, WP Kinsella, Yasuko Thanh, Billie Livingston, Arthur Black, George Bowering, Brian Calvert & Chris Cannon (the Canada Party), Anakana Schofield, Kevin Chong, and George Murray (direct from Newfoundland!). Readers for children include Robert Heidbreder, Sylvia Olsen, Susin Nielsen, and Caroline Adderson.
David C. Jones will be the host of the Mainstage entertainment on the 30th featuring accordions, ukuleles, drumming, a poetry slam, and more.
The Word Under The Street (September 30), located in the downstairs of the library, features local alternative comic book artists and illustrated zine producers. Check out great comic sessions with comic book artists such as 
Gord Hill and Sam Bradd. Also downstairs in the library, there’ll be many panels and workshops such as a “love letter” workshop with Ricepaper Magazine and a memoir writing workshop with Naomi Beth Waken.
At Carnegie Centre, take part in a chapbook making workshop, a session on “how to do your best live reading” with Hal Wake, an open mic poetry night, and more!

What’s On Under The Street

The Word Under The Street is back this year with several fantastic local alternative comic book artists and illustrated zine producers! Several exhibitors will be found in The Word Under The Street marketplace downstairs in the Library’s Alice MacKay Room this Sunday. In addition to these fabulous exhibitors, you will also find some wonderful interactive activities.
If you are an aspiring comic artist that would love feedback from a mentor, here’s your chance! Twelve experienced comic artists will provide you with undivided attention, advice and affirmation. Be sure to bring your work and sign up early at The Word Under The Street because the 24 spaces will fill up fast! The following Comic Consultants will be offering two 15-minute critiques each:

12:30 — Carina Piccioni, Kim Glennie
1:00 — Steve Rolston, James Lloyd

Also at The Word Under The Street, join instructor, comic book artist, self-publisher and freelancing artist Robin Thompson from 2:00-3:00 for his hands-on Cartooning Workshop. You’ll learn how to create awesome characters and design your own comic strip! This workshop is perfect for ages 11-16, but class is limited to 20 participants so be sure to sign up early!
More great programming, including panels and workshops, will take place Under The Street in Word Talks (Alma Van Dusen Room) and Writing Talks (Peter Kaye Room).

CanZine West 2010

CanZine, Canada’s Largest Zine Fair and Festival of Alternative Culture is coming to Vancouver! Join them on Saturday, October 16th, 2010 from 1-7pm at W2 Storyeum (151 West Cordova Street). $5 at the door, includes a copy of the fall issue of Broken Pencil.
Over 150 zines from across Canada will be on display and for sale! The heart of the event, indie publishers both in print and online come from across the country and the continent to show their wares! Be amazed at the creativity, ingenuity, and sheer weirdness! Word Under the street (it was literally in a basement under «Word On The Street») was super fun! Definitely a different crowd than your standard comiccon fare. Trevor actually did come to visit me for awhile but he got scared away by the crazy guy.
