In part 2 of the IELTS speaking test, you may be asked to describe a party. This could seem like a daunting task, but in this lesson I will show you everything you need to know to give a great description.
Today, we will look at:
- Possible cue cards for describing parties
- Language for describing parties
- Sample answers
IELTS Cue Cards: Describe a Party
When preparing for IELTS, you should not memorise answers to questions because there are thousands of possible versions. Instead, it is helpful to think about common question types and topics.
One topic (or sub-topic) that may occur is parties. Of course, this is part of the wider idea of friends and socialising, so you could study party language alongside friendship language. Parties are also related to the topics of festivals, culture, and traditions.
It is very important to carefully read the cue card that you are given so that you do not assume something that is not included on it. As such, we will practise analysing possible cue cards here:
Describe a Party you Attended
First of all, a commonly reported cue card about parties is this one:
Describe a party you have attended.
You should say:
– what type of party it was
– where the party was held
– who attended the party
and describe what you did at that party.
Here, the question is quite straightforward. The thing you are supposed to describe is an event that took place in the past. It must be some form of party and you must give details about it, including where it was and who attended. You should also talk a little about your own interactions there.
Describe a Party You Enjoyed
Describe a party that you enjoyed going to.
You should say:
– what the party was about
– where the party was held
– what people did during the party
and explain what you enjoyed about this party.
This cue card is very similar but you can note some important differences. In the first cue card, you could easily have said that you attended a party and disliked it or had no strong opinion about it. However, this cue card requires that you enjoyed the party. (You could also just pretend that you enjoyed it.) Here, you need to describe the party and then relate your feelings.
Planning your Answer
As I said before, you should not aim to memorise answers. This is a bad way to prepare for any part of the IELTS test. However, you can prepare for this sort of question in a few ways:
- Practise language related to the topic
- Practise thinking up ideas quickly
- Think of easily adapted ideas
The third idea is quite useful here. Often, in IELTS, you are given cue cards that say “describe a person/place/object” and then give more information. For example “describe a person who you admire” or “describe a person who you knew when you were young.” These could easily be adapted to be the same person. As long as you do not give a memorised answer, but instead adapt your answer to fit any version of that cue card, you will be fine.
Here, we can think of a party that we have attended and then adapt that answer for the second cue card. We could even adapt it to other cue cards that might change this topic: “describe a party that you threw for your friends” or “describe a party that you didn’t enjoy.”
Of course, doing this may require being imaginative or even lying slightly, but for some people this might be easier than thinking up an honest answer from their memory. After all, even a native speaker like me has trouble thinking up a developed answer in just one minute!
Words to Describe a Party
A big part of being prepared for IELTS topics is knowing the right language to use. Of course, there are no required words, but having a good vocabulary is really important for IELTS. I have written and spoken many times about how to learn vocabulary and how to avoid common mistakes, but it is really important to have a wide range of words and to use them accurately.
In this case, you should look for words that are specific to parties. Because there are so many kinds of parties, this can be quite difficult, but if you have one or two parties in mind, then you can learn vocabulary related to those.
Here are some words to describe parties. We will start with words to describe a party’s atmosphere:
Vocabulary | Meaning | Example |
Wild | Really exciting and crazy. | Last night was wild. I don’t remember getting home. |
Chilled | Relax and enjoyably calm. | Come to my party on Friday. It’s gonna be really chilled. |
Dull | Boring, uneventful | I went to John’s party last week but it was dull and everyone left early. |
Epic | Really incredible. | Oh my god, that was an epic party! |
Formal | Traditional or sophisticated. | I’d like to invite you to a tea party this weekend. It’s going to be a formal event, so please dress accordingly. |
Types of Party
Here are some types of party:
House party | A party held at someone’s house. Usually, this is young people using their parents’ home. |
Wedding reception | A party for a married couple, typically held after the main ceremony. |
Stag party | A party for a man who is about to get married. Also known as a stag night, stagger, stag do buck’s night, or bachelor’s party (depending on country). |

Graduation party | A party for university graduates. |

Pool party | A party held at a swimming pool. |
Block party | A party for all the people in a neighbourhood. |
Costume party | A party where people are supposed to dress up in costumes. |
Cocktail party | A formal party involving a bar that serves cocktails. |
Surprise party | A party thrown for a person that is not aware of the event in advance. |
Fundraiser | An event held with the purpose of raising money. |
Birthday party | A party to celebrate a person’s birthday. |
There are, of course, many other types of party and these might be culturally specific. If you know of other ones and want to talk about them, you can read up on Google. Make sure to find a source that was written by a native speaker of English.
Sample Answers
Below, I will give sample band 9 answers for the two above versions of the task “describe a party”:
Describe a party you have attended.
A few weeks ago, I went to a pool party at a hotel near my house. There was a bar and a stage for musicians to perform, as well as a swimming pool and various loungers for people to sit or lie on. The place was surrounded by palm trees and other tropical vegetation. In the beginning, there were only a few people there but over the course of the day it became more and more popular. Eventually, the place was full and it was very lively, with many groups of people sitting around and having fun.
Although I live in a hot country, it was a very cold day and so the water was freezing. I hadn’t realised and jumped into the pool. I got quite a shock from the water and from the expressions of other people that went in, they mostly felt the same. In the end, I spent most of the day out of the water, relaxing in the sun with a beer. I also enjoyed listening to the live music and speaking with other guests at the party, most of whom I had never met before. The atmosphere was quite friendly and so it was a good place to socialise.
Notes
I gave information about the party and its location in order to be descriptive. One word that I used to describe the atmosphere was “lively.” This is a great word that can impart a lot of meaning.
Sample Answer #2
Here is the second of our cue cards for today:
Describe a party that you enjoyed going to.
Several years ago, I went back to Scotland, the country where I was born. Whilst there, my family held a big party at my aunt’s house. Because I live on the other side of the world, it is not often that I see my family and certain people like uncles and cousins I see only once every five or six years.
On this particular occasion, my aunt held a garden party for the whole family, and this was the first time in about a decade that I had seen all of these people. We spent all day and all night in the garden, eating and drinking and talking. It felt wonderful to reconnect with my cousins and their own families, many of whom I had not met before.
We had a barbeque and there was a wide selection of beers, wines, and ciders on offer. Everyone had a great time and there were even games played in the evening. I really loved seeing these people again and learning about their lives. It was a great atmosphere and everyone was feeling very jovial. We finally headed home at about three o’clock in the morning!
Notes
In this answer, I have described a different kind of party and given lots of details about it. Some useful words here are “reconnect” and “jovial.” I focused on the social element more than the physical surroundings because in this case that was the most important aspect.
The idea for the Describing Words engine came when I was building the engine for Related Words (it’s like a thesaurus, but gives you a much broader set of related words, rather than just synonyms). While playing around with word vectors and the «HasProperty» API of conceptnet, I had a bit of fun trying to get the adjectives which commonly describe a word. Eventually I realised that there’s a much better way of doing this: parse books!
Project Gutenberg was the initial corpus, but the parser got greedier and greedier and I ended up feeding it somewhere around 100 gigabytes of text files — mostly fiction, including many contemporary works. The parser simply looks through each book and pulls out the various descriptions of nouns.
Hopefully it’s more than just a novelty and some people will actually find it useful for their writing and brainstorming, but one neat little thing to try is to compare two nouns which are similar, but different in some significant way — for example, gender is interesting: «woman» versus «man» and «boy» versus «girl». On an inital quick analysis it seems that authors of fiction are at least 4x more likely to describe women (as opposed to men) with beauty-related terms (regarding their weight, features and general attractiveness). In fact, «beautiful» is possibly the most widely used adjective for women in all of the world’s literature, which is quite in line with the general unidimensional representation of women in many other media forms. If anyone wants to do further research into this, let me know and I can give you a lot more data (for example, there are about 25000 different entries for «woman» — too many to show here).
The blueness of the results represents their relative frequency. You can hover over an item for a second and the frequency score should pop up. The «uniqueness» sorting is default, and thanks to my Complicated Algorithm™, it orders them by the adjectives’ uniqueness to that particular noun relative to other nouns (it’s actually pretty simple). As you’d expect, you can click the «Sort By Usage Frequency» button to adjectives by their usage frequency for that noun.
Special thanks to the contributors of the open-source mongodb which was used in this project.

Being in a party where everyone uses slang and phrases you don’t understand can bring about a very awkward feeling. You probably may have been wondering the meaning of the phrases you frequently hear your friends use at parties. Not to worry, the long-expected you’ve been seeking is right here. Highlighted below are some of the commonly used party phrases and words with their meanings, and examples to make you get the picture perfectly.
1. Have a whale of a time
When you hear the phrase ‘Have a whale of time’ at a party, the message the speaker is trying to convey is that you should have a real good time. Enjoying yourself to the fullest is also another way you may interpret the phrase.
Example; Hey, Paul. I’m glad you showed up. Do have a whale of time at the party.
2. The life or soul of the party
This phrase is used as a tag for anyone in the party that cracks everyone up. Anyone who entertains everyone else in the party through words or actions is also ‘The life or soul of the party’.
Example; Thanks for showing up at the party yesterday, you were the life of the party.
3. Party Popper
Literally, you would have been expecting the phrase to mean something really nice, but it’s definitely an irony. You may have experienced it in a party when someone racks or brings up boring jokes and vibes that pisses everyone off. Well, that person is for sure the party popper. A party pooper is just anyone that drains the life of a party.
Example: Don’t invite Jane; she’s such a party popper.
4. The more, the merrier
When you hear someone use this phrase, what the person is insinuating is that; the life of the party is dependent on the number of people present. That is, the energy or fun level of the party is number (people) dependent.
Example: I’m glad you came; the more, the merrier.
5. After Party
The after party is a mini party that is held after the main party has ended. If you’ve been invited to an after party, just know that it will be a hangout involving you and your close circle, not everyone at the party.
Example: The after party was more enjoyable than the party itself.
6. Baby Shower
If you have an expectant mother in your circle, you should be expecting to be invited to a baby shower real soon. A baby shower is a celebration by the expectant mother and her close circle before she puts to bed. It is a ceremony where gifts are received in bounty by the mother to celebrate her motherhood as well as her unborn child.
Example: I’m four months gone, I really can’t wait for my baby shower.
7. Happy birthday to you
This popular phrase is employed in the celebration of the day of birth of anyone. If you’ve been invited to a birthday party, it is very much you should expect to chorus the happy birthday song to celebrate the celebrant.
Example: Today is your birthday, Mary. Happy birthday to you!
Party Supplies Basic Vocabulary
1. Invitation Cards
An invitation card is one of the first things needed even before a party will take place. Using an invitation card is a necessity if you’ll be holding any party soon.
The invitation card is considered necessary because it will contain important details like your party date, address, time, dress code, and other information for all your invited guests.
2. Thank You Notes
Invitation cards are sent before the party while ‘Thank you notes’ are sent after the party.
Thank you notes are means of expressing your gratitude to everyone that showed up at your party. Sending personal greetings (Thank you notes) to your friends is one of the best things ever.
3. Partyware
Partyware contains the items needed for the refreshment of your guests, like cups, cutlery, plates, and so on. You can easily plan appropriately for the partywares needed by checking the responses you get from the already sent invitation cards.

IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card.
Describe a party you have attended.
- what type of party it was
- where the party was held
- who attended the party
and describe what you did at that party.
[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]
Part 3: Details Discussion:
• What are the differences between a serious party and a friendly party?
• Why are some people late for parties intentionally?
• Why do some people like the party while others hate it?
• What would you do if the guests you have invited to a party feel bored?
• Will there be more and more people to attend parties?
• Why do some people like to host parties at a restaurant or hotel rather than home?
Model Answer 1:
I never really like to consider myself as a “party animal”, but I don’t really mind attending a party once in a while, especially, when I become a bit more “burned out” than usual from my job. So, a few months ago, when I got an invitation from a friend to celebrate his new job, offered by one of the prestigious accounting firms in my country, I just couldn’t wait to attend the party!
But, before that special day actually arrived, my friend had to wait almost one agonizing year, after quitting his last job, as he had to go through numerous job interviews one after another. So, when the good news had arrived, my friend immediately decided to celebrate at one of the biggest hotels in his home town because he wanted to invite all of his friends and classmates from his high school and university as well as all of his family members and relatives. Besides, he also wanted the occasion to be really special because it was his ‘dream job’ that he was celebrating, for which, he studied and worked really hard for years.
So, anyway, everybody, invited to the party, started to get busy talking and laughing with each other while enjoying some drinks and snacks, as soon as they arrived in the evening. I, along with my old school and university friends, got busy catching up with each other’s life story of the past years during which we didn’t get to meet. We also enjoyed a special music show by one of our local musical bands. Some of the guests even joined the music band to display their “musical talent” which was refreshing and entertaining. Finally, it was time for us to enjoy the food which, I must say, was cooked and made to perfection. In fact, there were just so many different kinds of dishes that one just had no choice but to satisfy his or her appetite completely. Anyway, having said and done everything, it was a great party at the end of the day, and everybody left the hotel with some great memories in their minds.

Today I’m going to tell you about a particular party I attended earlier this year. I’ll tell you where it was held, who was present at the party and what I was up to whilst I was there!
Honestly speaking, I can be a bit grumpy about going to parties! I never know what to wear as I don’t really like dressing up for parties. I feel self-conscious in dresses and too much of a scruff if I don’t make an effort. I worry about whether I’ll know anyone, and I dread sit-down meals because I’m a vegetarian and I always seem to be a problem. This being so when a close friend of mine announced she would have a big celebration for her fiftieth birthday, my heart sank a bit. Of course, I put on a smile, and said ‘that’s great!’ but I wasn’t really looking forward to it. I knew that it was important to her, though, so I was determined to make a real effort, and of course, I agreed I would go.
Well, I should have had more faith. The party was great. It was held in a beautifully converted barn in a rural location on the edges of Sheffield in England. The venue had a wooden polished floor and was very simply decorated with some tastefully positioned fairy lights and candles. There was low-level music playing and lots of places to sit and chat or mingle with other guests. If I remember correctly, there were white tablecloths over the tables and some simple but lovely floral decorations. The food was provided by a friend of the Birthday Girl, who specialises in fast street food. You could queue up for a delicious meal presented in a wrap from a very jolly woman serving from an open-sided vehicle parked in the cobbled courtyard outside. In a separate annexed room inside was a table almost collapsing under the weight of delicious home-made cakes and puddings on one side, and glorious British cheeses on the other. There was also a small bar serving drinks, for which my host picked up the bill at the end, it was beautifully done – very tasteful, calm and joyful too.
My friend, whose birthday it was, has a really wide network of friends. She decided to invite anyone and everyone from her social circle. So there were old school friends; people she knew from her voluntary activities with scouts; fellow runners – she is very active in a number of running clubs. Former work colleagues; people she’d come to know just from waiting with other parents at the school gates when her children were little; fellow entrepreneurs (she runs her own small business) as well as neighbours and acquaintances from every area of her life.
Before I went, I was worried about whether I’d know anyone else there. I hadn’t been living in the area for all that long before being invited, and so I was a bit hesitant about what to expect. I should have remembered what a good judge of character my fantastically friendly friend is! What did I do at the party? Apart from eating my body weight in delicious food, I met and talked to many interesting people that I might otherwise never have come across! This included the self-employed interior designer, marathon runners, a former Bluebell girl, artists, writers, medical doctors, IT workers, academics and students. It was a remarkable cross-section of fascinating folk. I had a wonderful time.
What’s more, I discovered that actually, I did know quite a few people there after all. It was great fun trying to discover how we all came to be there and what connected each of us to the – «hostess with the mostest» to coin the old phrase! I am almost won over. Next time she offers to host a party, I might even find myself looking forward to it, you never know.

Model Answer 3:
The party I would like to describe for this topic is a New Year Eve party that I attended two years ago. My university friends invited me to join the party and I thought it would be fun to be there. It was held at a 3-star hotel where the teachers, students and a few of their relatives were present.
A week before the New Year eve, one of my friends called on my mobile phone and informed me that I am expected to be present at the party. On the day, when the party was supposed to take place, I took a taxi to reach the hotel. The name of the hotel was (..say a name you prefer…) and it was one of the best hotels in our town, renowned for its hospitality and delicious food. After I reached the hotel, I found that it had been gorgeously decorated and most of my friends from university and some of the teachers were already enjoying the party. We gathered on the 2nd floor and the vibrant atmosphere and melodious music were breathtaking. A local music band performed at the party and people were dresses adequately for the party except for a few friends of mine who do not care much about dressing up for the occasion.
I enjoyed the performance of the music band and sat at a corner most of the time. I was not really in a mood to blend in and cheer up most of the time. Rather, I was thinking about my New Year resolutions and enjoying the colourful gathering all around me. I did, however, enjoyed the meal and drinks and I loved a few continental dishes the hotel served us. When the clock ticked at the «zero hour» everybody became ecstatic and started exchanging new year wishes. I also talked to a teacher who was at the party and then sat on a couch to enjoy the lively ambience around me. If I remember correctly, I stayed at the party till 2.00 am and then returned to my room after enjoying one of the most fabulous parties in my whole life.
Tips for answering this cue card topic:
You are free to talk about any sort of party you like for this cue card topic as it has not specifically mentioned any particular party type like the New Year party, school party, family party, birthday party and so on.
Following are some of the points you can pick up for answering this cue card topic:
1. Types of party: Birthday of a friend or a family member (you can also talk about your birthday party), New Year party, a family party, reunion party, a small party arranged by your friends, A party celebrated because one of your great achievements, a business party you threw for a business success or you attended a business party that was thrown by your business partner, a party arranged by your office/ university etc.
2. Where it was held: It would depend on who threw the party. If this party was arranged by you or your family, say that it held at your house. Alternatively, the party can be held at a restaurant, hotel or a party centre. University or office parties usually are held on their premises. The party can be held on your friend, relative or business partner’s house or guest house. Finally, it could be an outdoor party as well.
3. Who attended the party: For family parties, mostly your family members, close friends and relatives would be joining. If this is an office or business party, your colleagues or associates would be there. For university parties thrown by your friends, you will mostly have your friends and classmates and sometimes teachers as well. If the party is thrown by a friend or their family, then there would be some of your friends you know and others you won’t know.
4. Some of the common features of a party: You gather and meet others, you bring a gift, you talk to others, you enjoy food & drinks and depending on the party there would be music, dancing and other activities. You either enjoy a party or you don’t. Sometimes you meet new people and talk to them.
Part 3: Details Discussion:
Q. What are the differences between a serious party and a friendly party?
Answer: I think that there are many differences between these two kinds of party. In the former, the attire is often more elegant with guests wearing costumes and ties, while in the latter, this doesn’t always happen and people wear more casual clothes, such as jeans, t-shirts and so on. In addition, serious parties are often more of a professional type, whilst with friendly parties, this isn’t always the case. For example, a serious party includes a party with a person’s colleagues, employer and boss and in case of a friendly party, some peers, fellow students or relatives enjoy the party. Moreover, it could be argued that serious parties are mostly held in restaurants or bars and most of the time are expensive, while friendly parties are held at our houses or cafeterias and are cost-saving.
Q. Why are some people late for parties intentionally?
Answer: This is a really interesting question and to be honest, I have never thought about it. I can’t find a logical explanation of why someone will do something like that and I would describe it as an immature and unscrupulous action. But, unfortunately, there are many, who belong to this category and some of them are friends of mine as well. A reason that comes to my mind is that someone doesn’t want to go to a party but they are forced to do so. Indeed, there are many occasions and especially related to workplace or parties thrown by relatives where people are sometimes forced to be present. In this case, the only solution is going many hours after the commencement of the party. This is the only reason I can think of and partly justify this action.
Tips: If you are one of them who intentionally go to a party late, just say the reason you do so and give the best possible explanation you can think of to convince the examiner that your action is justifiable.
Q. Why do some people like the party while others hate it?
Answer: I don’t really know for sure, but I would say that it’s a matter of individual character and preference. Some people are introvert and like to keep a low profile who don’t like places and events which are crowded. Furthermore, if parties are held in houses, the mess is unavoidable and oftentimes the damages are irreparable, so for the host, it could be said that is a traumatic experience.
Moving to those who love parties, it could be argued that it’s a way in which people come together and have fun. It’s arguably true that due to the excessive working hours and the busy lifestyle, people have drifted apart and become alienated. Parties are great opportunities for reunions and substantial conversations. A further reason which is a little ludicrous is because of the tasteful and delectable food. I can say about some of my friends that — the first thing that comes to their mind when they hear that they are invited to parties is ‘food’ and they are instantly inundated with positive feelings.
Q. What would you do if the guests you have invited to a party feel bored?
Answer: The first thing I would do if my guests are bored at a party that I have hosted is to turn on the music or change my playlist. Some people don’t like conventional and rife types of music and prefer something else. If music couldn’t help, I would ask them what they want to do to have fun and adjust to their desires and preferences, if possible. Furthermore, if nothing of the above could produce a positive result and change their mood, I would play a game to attract their interest or tell some stories from our different experiences and stages of life, which would definitely lead to some laughter and joy. I would finally arrange some indoor games and would declare some prizes for the winners to warm up the guests.
Tips: Some other options to cheer up the bored guests in a party could be- changing food and drinks, sugar and coffee sometimes make someone recharged, introducing each other so that they can talk, giving them space and autonomy is useful as well because they are free to do whatever they want without restrictions.
Q. Will there be more and more people to attend parties?
Answer: Yes I think so. I truly believe that the number of party lovers will increase in the future. The opportunities to gather together with friends and relatives are shrinking in modern days and people would not want to miss parties where they can meet people, relatives and enjoy their time. Parties would be a way of relaxing and taking breaks for many busy employees and the increasing number of party attendees these days gives hints that in the future it will increase further.
Q. Why do some people like to host parties at a restaurant or hotel rather than home?
Answer: For some, arranging a party at home takes too much effort and time. Decorating the home, cooking different food items and then worrying whether the guests would like the taste, as well as cleaning the house, and doing the dishes are difficult. Giving the location of the venue to guests is not easy either. Moreover, in our modern outset, inviting many guests at a small apartment is not feasible. So, it’s only natural that many people these days prefer to hire a party centre at a hotel or a community centre to throw a party.

It’s my pleasure to share with you about my attendance at a recent party. It was a birthday party of my friend – Hung, who turned 22 that day. This was also his farewell party just before his departure to Canada to further his study.
The party just happened last month at his own house in the hometown. Hung invited almost all of his buddies and we attended the birthday celebration together. Apart from us, there were more than 30 other guests on this occasion. They seemed to be unfamiliar with me but my guess was that they would be mostly Hung’s relatives, neighbors and his father’s colleagues.
We congregated and bought a present for him. It was such astonishment of us when we saw his huge birthday cake. 22 candles of different colors were lit around the cake and the whole house was redecorated for the occasion. We sang the birthday song when Hung cut the cake. We congratulated him and wished him an excellent academic term ahead and a prosperous life afterwards. Then we tasted the cake and had a good feast, the foods were quite tasty.
To me, this birthday party brought its own meaning. It was a valuable chance for us to gather together, talk to each other our daily life and share about our childhood memories. This party left a lasting impression on me and honestly, it is still fresh in my mind until now.

People have parties to celebrate special occasions like birthdays, weddings, or the beginning of a new year. I think it’s important to celebrate these things because they are milestones in our lives. Parties are a good way to bring people together, and they’re an opportunity to let off some steam.
3. Do you think parties will become more popular in the future?
No, I don’t think anything will change. People have always had parties, and I’m sure they always will in the future. Humans need to socialise and enjoy themselves, and parties are one of the best ways to do that.

Sample 3:
You should say:
- What was it about?
- Where was it held?
- What did people do at the party?
- Explain what you enjoyed at this party?
Life has given me a lot of happiness and moments to celebrate with my near and dear ones. I have celebrated many happy moments by hosting parties for someone and attending other people’s parties as well.
I have attended many parties on different occasions in my life but the most enjoyable one was a party that I held to mark my elder sisters twenty-fifth birthday. It was a surprise party that I planned with the help of my mother. It was on the twenty-fifth of September last year, and I had started to plan it two days before. After my sister left for work in the morning I started decorating our garden and installing the setup including the tables and chairs. My mother started baking her favorite chocolate cake while I called all her friends and our relatives to the party in the evening. I then proceeded to order snacks and appetizers along with the beverages for the evening. The celebrations finally commenced and all the guests had arrived before she came. We welcomed her with the birthday song and hugs from everyone.
We all had an amazing time at the party. Everybody socialized, we played party games, danced and had a lot of fun throughout the evening. The best part was the fact that everyone was happy with the celebration and there were smiles all around me. My sister got gifts from everyone and was all smiles when I gifted her a necklace. She was spellbound and thanked me profusely for organizing such an amazing party.
