Tic-tac-toe is another timeless game we’ve all play one time or another. This classic game can also help a child automatically recognize sight words. This game can be used to introduce new sight words or to review previously learned ones.
Create Sight Word Tic-Tac-Toe
Similar to hangman, tic-tac-toe is very affordable and can be quickly created within seconds using a piece of paper and pen. You could also use our templates below. Using Dolch’s pre-primer sight words, we created tic-tac-toe games.
Sight Words | Tic-Tac-Toe PDF |
a, and, in, is, it, the, to & you | Tic-Tac-Toe PDF |
I, can, come, for, here, me, my & we | Tic-Tac-Toe PDF |
big, go, look, not, play, said, see & up | Tic-Tac-Toe PDF |
blue, down, help, jump, make, red, run & yellow | Tic-Tac-Toe PDF |

Play Sight Word Tic-Tac-Toe
Prior to playing tic-tac-toe, review each sight word. The game is played just like tic-tac-toe but a child must say the sight word prior to selecting a box. The youngest player goes first and selects a box using either an “x” or “o” – cross out or circle the sight word. Alternate selecting boxes until a player gets three in a row (wins the game) or the grid is completely filled in but no one won the game. This is commonly referred to as a cat’s game.
Tic-Tac-Toe Strategy
When I am the first player, if possible I select a corner on my first, second & third turn to force a win. Obtaining three out of the four corners allows me to win two different ways. When I am the second player, I always select the middle to prevent my opponent from using my strategy against me.
Tic-Tac-Toe Alternative Play
Unfortunately, tic-tac-toe can be played by only two players. We created an alternative game that can be played with 3 or more players. Tic-tac-toe meets bingo. Select at least 8 sight words. Each player fills in the tic-tac-toe grid, putting a sight word in each “box.” If you have 8 sight words, use the middle square for a free space or use two words twice. If you have more than nine sight words, each player needs to select either 8 or 9 words and write them on her tic-tac-toe grid – make sure there is only one word per “box.” Once each player has completed their grid, a parent or teacher calls out the sight words either randomly from a list or out of a hat or similar object. Each player crosses out (x) or circles (o) the word. The first player to get three in a row wins the game. Using Dolch’s pre-primer sight words, we created five tic-tac-toe template games noted below.

1. Overview
In Sight Words Tic-Tac-Toe, children will play a game of traditional Tic-Tac-Toe, with the added wrinkle that they must read a sight word correctly before they can place an X or O on the game board. The goal of Tic-Tac-Toe is to encourage children to read sight words quickly, while also building their confidence through repetition.
You can play this game with your child, or two children can play each other.

2. Materials
- Sight words flash cards
- Tic-Tac-Toe game board: 3×3 board or 4×4 board
- X and O markers
For cards, you can use a set of flash cards for your desired word list, in any size. For the game board and markers, you can print out ours or make your own. Print everything on thick card-stock paper for greater durability, and cut apart the X and O markers.
Alternately: use chalk to draw a game board on a chalkboard or sidewalk. Use masking tape to make a game board on a table or the floor. Mark the X‘s and O‘s with chalk, checkers, or whatever you have handy.
↑ Top
3. Activity
Put the Tic-Tac-Toe game board between the two players. Shuffle the flash cards and put them in a face-down stack next to the board. Decide which player will use the X markers and which will use the O markers. Flip a coin to decide who will go first.
Player A draws a card from the stack and reads the word out loud. If he can’t read the word correctly within a few seconds, go through our sight words correction procedure to review and reinforce the correct word.
Once he has correctly read the word, he can put a marker on one of the squares of the game board. Then it is Player B‘s turn. If you (the adult) are Player B, ask the child to “help” you read the word on the card you draw.
Keep taking turns until one person makes a row of three markers on the board — vertically, horizontally, or diagonally — or until all the squares are filled with no one getting three in a row.
As the child gets the hang of the game and knows the words better, challenge him to read the words faster and faster, until he can correctly read each word in one second or less.
↑ Top
4. Extension
Increase the length of the game by using a 4×4 game board. The children will have to read more words correctly in order to make a row of four markers.
↑ Top
5. Variation
If Player A reads a word incorrectly, Player B gets to put down a marker.
↑ Top
6. Assessment
As you observe this game, make note of how long it takes children to read the words. Are several children getting slowed down by one or two words? If so, give these words extra attention in your next lesson. Also look out for individual children who move slowly throughout the path.

Tic Tac Toe is a fun and easy game that can be used to review a variety of grammar forms, including irregular forms of the past simple.
To play this game, you will need two teams of 1-4 players, with one team playing as Xs and the other as Os.
Begin by drawing a classic Tic Tac Toe grid on the board and filling each square with one of the items to be reviewed.
Teams take turns choosing a square and making a sentence using the chosen word in the correct form. If the sentence is correct, the team places an X or O in the square. If the sentence is incorrect, the square remains in play.
The first team to connect three Xs or Os in a row – either horizontally, vertically or diagonally – wins the game. If the game ends in a tie, have a quick question ready to determine a winner.
Tip: Put one of the more challenging grammar items in the high-value middle square.
Here are some suggested forms that you can practice with this game:
- Simple past irregular verbs: Write the infinitive form and have students make sentences using the past form.
- Adverbs: Write the adjective form and have students make sentences using an adverb. Suggested words: hard, easy, fast, good, bad, quick, angry, happy, normal.
- Verbs followed by infinitive or gerund: Write the verb and have students make sentences using a second verb in the infinitive or gerund form. Suggested words: enjoy, suggest, avoid, remember, start, ask, prepare, promise, forget (this website has a nice list).
- Vocabulary: Use Tic Tac Toe to review vocabulary. Write a list of words on the Tic Tac Toe grid, and have students create sentences or definitions for the words they choose.
- Pronunciation: Use Tic Tac Toe to practice pronunciation by writing a list of minimal pairs (words that differ by only one sound, such as “sit” and “set”) and having students say the word that corresponds to the square they choose.
You can also adapt this game for other grammar forms, such as comparatives, phonetics, compound nouns, and more.
Other ideas
An anonymous contributor suggested these variations on the classic Tic Tac Toe format.
I have a couple of tic tac toe variations. The first one is to simply require a player to answer a question in order to take her or his turn. This is a fun way to review in a small class. For example, if we have been studying animal habitats, I might ask, “Where do emus/ penguins live? ” If the student does not give a correct answer, the turn is forfeited and the other player is asked a question.
A variant on this I call devil’s tic tac toe: The person whose turn it is may replace one of the opponent’s marks with her or his (assuming that the player has earned the right to put a marker on by correctly answering my questions). This can take a lot longer to play than traditional tic tac toe, but it is also more exciting and more dynamic.
Laura writes:
When I saw this game an idea came to mind and it worked wonderfully for my adults’ spoken class. I do the grid and write a topic in each square then I divide my students into two groups and they choose a topic and have to talk about it for 2min (for weaker students – 1min) and when they finish I give them their X’s and O’s. The teams have to compete to see which team can win.
