If you want to emphasize that you are frequently tricked into using the wrong pronunciation, perhaps cozening. It’s a fairly rare, old-fashioned word that sounds friendly and cozy, but to cozen actually means

  1. a. trans. To cheat, defraud by deceit.

  2. a. To deceive, dupe, beguile, impose upon.

  3. To beguile or cheat into, up, etc.; †to induce by deception to do a thing.

(«cozen, v.» OED Online. Oxford University Press, September 2016. Attestations and some additional sub-definitions omitted.)

As suggested by the third definition, cozen and cozening often have connotations of seductiveness, which seems especially apropos for something that is fascinating and beautiful but leads you into error. For example:

No courtesan! Hast thou deceived me then? Tell me, thou wicked-honest
cozening beauty! Why didst thou draw me in with such a fair pretence, why such a tempting preface to invite, and the whole piece
so useless and unedifying? (Aphra Behn, The Feigned Courtesans,
originally staged 1679)

I never did believe in your false face,/I knew you well in every other
thing,/But your fine eyes shone with so bright a grace,/Your features
were so sweet and cozening,/That to your promises my hopes would
cling;/My soul believed in them; and for this I die. (Alistair
Moffat, Tuscany: A History, 2011; translating from Italian)

He was in a manner tricked, coney-caught, a court-dor to a
cozening cotquean. (Anthony Burgess, Nothing Like the Sun, 2013)

So, in your phrase:

Oh French, you cozening beauty!

Note that this is a fairly archaic term; although it is still in use, it definitely has an old-fashioned feel, and some of the recent usages which I’ve seen don’t appear to understand the connection to deception. For your purposes, these facts may be somewhat in the term’s favor, as they may somewhat mitigate the negative connotations.

For a more alliterative phrase, beguiling beauty has a nice ring, though I think the connotations of deceptiveness are less clear there.

«Nothing is always what as it seems.»

Is it correct? May be not grammatically, but practically?

Second:

«All is not what as it seems.»

Which one is more emphatic?

Thanks.

Neither one is idiomatic; neither one is heard. I would say «Nothing is ever what it seems.»

«All is not what is seems» is also fine, but has a different meaning to «Nothing is ever what it seems»

It reminds me of a song by Selena Gomez named «Everything is not what it seems». :)

The other posters have given you the right answer. I would just point out that ‘Nothing is always what it seems» [no ‘as’, by the way], means the exact opposite of what I imagine you want to say. If nothing is always what it seems, then it is not deceiving you, its appearance is a correct indication of what it is. ‘Nothing is ever what it seems’ is the same as saying that ‘A thing is never what it seems’.

To me «nothing is always what it seems» means that some things are usually what they seem but not always and other things may never be what they seem.

To me «nothing is always what it seems» means that some things are usually what they seem but not always and other things may never be what they seem.

That is very interesting. Maybe I am logic-chopping, but to me
[Nothing (i.e. the absence of anything)] is [what it seems] means the same as:
[A bus] is [what it seems] — this is to say, it is never an elephant or a dog. If you insert ‘always’ this just reinforces that meaning.

On the other hand, I do see that if you say:
[No (individual) thing] is [always what it seems] then the ‘always’ makes a difference, and allows of exceptions.
    Am I making sense?

    • #8

Yes, that makes perfect sense. I was assuming the meaning of ‘no one thing’.

    • English (US)

This sentence is correct: “It is not what it seems.”

    ************
This sentence is incorrect. “It is not what it seems like.”
We do not say “ what it seems like”

We do say : This seems like a good choice.

This seems like the recipe has cinnamon in it.
This seems like it’s going to be a good day.
This seems like a bad idea.

“Seems” is in contrast to what is clear and sure —
This recipe has cinnamon in it.
    This is a good day.
    This is a bad day.

    Hope this helps

    • Traditional Chinese (Taiwan)

    @redtsuru

    So you guys say

    “What does it seem?”
    “What does it look?”
    “What does it taste?”

    • English (US)

    No.

You can ask a question: What does that look like to you?
What does that taste like to you?

    But
    seem like
is not the same kind of thing as
    look like
    taste like

    And

A statement — THIS is not what it seems. (which actually is a better way to say this sentence)

is Not the same as a question.

You can’t use the same words and word order for both.

    *********
What are you trying to say.

I don’t think you will find rules that work for all these things together.

You may have to see what works for certain groups — and certain words.

Seems — means an unsure position, something that seems is not necessarily true, sound solid etc

    • English (US)

What are you trying to say?

    • Traditional Chinese (Taiwan)

    @redtsuru

Because I know you guys use seem this way:

    Seems adjective

    Seems like noun

So I think if it is a noun that I am referring to in the question, there should be a “like” coming after “seem”.
