What is the EA rule?

Unpredictable Vowel Team ea. Rule: Two vowels side by side in a word, make one sound and have more than one pronunciation. Vowel team ea is pronounced with the long e as in seat AND short e as in head. Sort the Spelling Words by the vowel team /ea/ sounds.

What are three common sounds for EA?

The seal left the sea and sat on the beach. Lesson 1 ea introduces one of the three sounds for ea, /ē/ as in eat, which is its most frequent sound. The /ĕ/ sound of ea, as in bread, is taught in Lesson 2. The /ā/ sound of ea, as in steak, is taught in Lesson 3.

Is EA a special sound?

The consonants, short vowels, and long-vowels spelled with two letters are not included in the 132 Special Sounds, except for a few exceptions (ea has three sounds). The Special Sounds relate especially to the spelling program, which is one of the strong points of the first and second grade programs.

Why does EA say A?

It is a rule that tells you that when you have a closed syllable (ending in a consonant) the vowel sound( in this case ‘ea’) is a short sound as in ‘breath’ (pronounced /breth/). If you add an ‘e'( known as a silent ‘e’) to the end it will now make ‘ea’ have a long sound: ‘breathe’ ( pronounced /breeth/).

Is OA a vowel?

Spelling the long vowel sound /ō/: o-e, oa, ow, oe.

Is EA a vowel team?

Vowel Digraphs and Vowel Diphthongs A digraph is when two letters spell one sound, and diphthongs are a special kind of vowel sound. So all vowel teams are digraphs but some are also diphthongs. Long A Vowel Teams: ai, ay, ea, eigh, ey. Long E Vowel Teams: ee, ea, ey, ei, ie.

How do you introduce a vowel team?

Teach the patterns explicitly e.g. ‘ai’/’ay’, ‘oi’/’oy’, ‘ei’/’ey’. If students are to use plastic or magnetic letters in vowel teamwork, be sure to buy those that have the digraph as one piece. Use sound (Elkonin) boxes and/or sound buttons to highlight the fact that a ‘team’ can represent a single vowel sound.

Is LL a Digraph?

Ll/ll is a digraph that occurs in several languages.

Is tch a blend or digraph?

A digraph is two letters (two vowels or two consonants or a vowel and a consonant) which together make one sound. A trigraph is a single sound that is represented by three letters, for example: In the word ‘match’, the three letters ‘tch’ at the end make only one sound.

What is a 2 letter blend word?

Common 2-Letter Blends. The most common 2-letter consonant blends are: bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl, br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr, sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st, sw, and tw. Here are some words with 2-letter consonant blends: Bl: blank, black, blue, blister, blight, blast.

Most beginning English classes have a lesson on vocabulary related to jobs and professions.  Usually these lessons cover jobs like: baker, teacher, and lawyer.  One piece of grammatical information people often learn early on about profession title words in English is that they often end in the suffix –er.  This suffix is commonly used to indicate a person who does a job related to the base form of the word to which –er is added.  For example, teach + er = teacher and bake + er = baker.  This rule, of course doesn’t not always hold true.  For example, cook + er = cooker, but this is not the correct word in English for a person who cooks as their job.  The correct word is either “cook” or “chef”.  So, the rule of adding –er to a word to indicate that a person does this job is not universal.  (Neither are all words that end in -er related to jobs or professions.)  There are also some other common suffixes related to professions you may or may not have heard of, for example: –or, –ist, and –ian.  Professions that end in these suffixes include: actor, doctor, director, psychologist, florist, journalist, pediatrician, electrician, and librarian, just to name a few.

When teaching about vocabulary related to professions I have often thought that the vocabulary related to professions is not that interesting, mostly because it is so limited.  Only learning about jobs that end in –er certainly doesn’t represent a wide variety of professions!  There are just so many professions out there beyond the basic ones you may already have learned in an introductory English course.  So, today I am going to highlight some different professions.  Some of these professions you may have never heard of, or perhaps you just haven’t heard the English names for these professions before.  None-the-less I hope this will help increase your English vocabulary related to the topic area of jobs/professions.  Who knows, while reading about these profession, you may also discover a career you are interested in pursuing!

Actuary – Actuaries are people who deal with risk for their profession. Actuaries decide how likely things such as death, sickness, injury, disability, and loss of property are to occur, as well as the costs of these things.  They help design insurance policies and pension plans. Most actuaries work for insurance companies.

Archaeologist – Archaeologists examine ancient sites and objects to learn about the past. They often work on excavations, commonly called ‘digs’, and record, analyze, and interpret archaeological remains.

Astronomer – Astronomers are scientists who study planets, stars, and galaxies.  They use large telescopes and special cameras to create images of the universe.  They work with data collected from the images they take in outer space to analyze it for new information.

Forester – Foresters are in charge of forests.  They are skilled in planting, managing, or caring for trees.  A forester’s work may include timber (wood) harvesting, ecological restoration, or managing protected wilderness areas.

Landscape architect – Landscape architects make outdoor places more beautiful and useful.  They design parks, playgrounds, college campuses, sports playing fields, and even back yards. They also work with environmental scientists to find the best way to conserve or restore natural resources.

Paralegal – Paralegals or legal assistants are people who help lawyers in their work. They perform some of the same work as lawyers, but have less schooling.  Paralegals investigate cases to make sure that lawyers know all of the important facts.

Rancher – Ranchers are people who own or run ranches, which are big animal farms. A rancher’s work usually involves handling livestock (i.e. cows, horses). Ranchers manage large herds of animals, making sure the animals have enough to eat, stay healthy, and stay on the right land. Sometimes the people who work on ranches, but don’t own the ranch are called: cowhands, ranch hands, wranglers, or cowboys.

Sound engineering technician – Sound engineer technicians operate machines and equipment to record, synchronize, mix, or reproduce music, voices, or sound effects in sporting arenas, theater productions, recording studios, or movie and video productions.  They often work in the movie or music industries, but also in radio broadcasting and in the performing arts.

Surveyor – Surveyors measure land, air space, and water areas. They describe where certain areas of land are and they explain what it looks like, and how much land is there.  Surveyors also create maps.

Zookeeper – Zookeepers take care of wild animals in zoos and animal parks. They feed the animals, clean their living spaces, and work to keep them healthy. Zookeepers, sometimes called “keepers”, watch the animals to see if they are sick or hurt and write detailed notes about each animal to tell a veterinarian if there is a problem.  They also teach people who come to zoos about animals.

end job interview

The words “can’t” and “impossible” are not in her vocabulary

What will end job interviews?

This weeks post is about what will end job interviews for candidates and employee careers.  Working in HR, I have a number of jobs. One of them is to interview candidates and the other is to work through the challenges/opportunities that employees may face throughout their career. Yes, I said “opportunities”. Very HR’esque of me but when you are being PAID to do a job, challenges are not problems. Challenges really are “opportunities”, challenges are job security.

Premise 1

As employees, we are paid to do a job. Your job is to solve your manager’s problems and to solve your company’s problems.  If you think your job is to get a promotion or a raise, think again.  Every time you are presented with a problem, consider yourself lucky because you were just presented with job security. Problems may include shipping product on schedule, putting together X amount of widgets per hour, or coming up with the next revenue generating product the company will profit from.  Make no mistake, these are all opportunities.

Premise 2

If A equals B and B equals C, then A must equal C.

Your manager is a human being. Human beings don’t like messy people problems. Your manager doesn’t like messy people problems.

Don’t be a messy people problem.

The three words I don’t appreciate hearing during interviews and when working on employee issues are “hate”, “can’t”,“impossible”, and “stupid”.

Yeah, that is 4.  Don’t say I never gave you anything. “Stupid” is a freebie.

When I interview a candidate, if I hear the word “can’t”, “impossible” or “hate” in the course of the interview, the candidate is pretty much done. I am looking to present a problem solver to the hiring manager and not a problem “creator”.  The words “can’t”, “impossible”, and “hate” are strong signs of problem creators and to me, this is worse than dropping an F-bomb. This is where I turn to the little children and exclaim “Earmuffs!!” Proper boys and girls don’t drop F-Bombs and employees that are constantly thinking about solving problems don’t use language that includes “can’t” and “impossible”.

The word “stupid” used in most contexts will also end an interview. After I hear these words in an interview, I may still be asking you interview questions, but when you are answering, I am thinking about the White Sale at Wal-Mart and wondering if they have 800 thread count on sale.  Anytime I hear a candidate say something like “My prior manager always had stupid ideas” or “My manager was stupid”, the interview is over. Elvis has left the building and so has the opportunity.

“Can’t” and “Impossible” will end job interviews

  • “This can’t be done.”
  • “I can’t do that.”
  • “My manager always asking more of the team than they could do.”
  • “This idea is impossible.”
  • “We are wasting our time, you are asking the impossible.”
  • “My last manager always wanted the impossible.”

For the record, we put a man on the moon in the 60’s. If we could do that in the 60’s, (that would be the 1960’s, before computers), I don’t think there is anything your manager can ask you that is “impossible” or “can’t” be done.

“Hate” will end Job interviews:

  • “I hate the reporting part of my job”
  • “I hate it when someone cuts me off mid-sentence”
  • “I hate Johnny manager, he is a jerk”
  • “I hate Suzy co-worker, she is stupid”  (this is a double whammy)

Years ago, I saw a clip of Oprah Winfrey interviewing Michael Jordan. She said something to the effect “Michael, you can have pretty much anything in the world. I want to know what you hate?”

Michael responded with “Hate is a very strong word.  I don’t think I hate anything, I just haven’t learned how to appreciate it yet. I don’t hate anything”.

And the audience exploded in applause. This is why everyone loves Mike.

The words “can’t”, “impossible”, “hate”, and “stupid” are all indications of a problem creator. A candidate who gives the indication that they are a problem creator won’t get hired for a number of reasons.  I am listing only two from what would be a very long list below:

  1. I work in HR. This makes me one of two guys. I am either the guy that is tasked to help the manager solve their messy people problems, or I am tasked to solve them myself. If I see a problem creator when looking to fill a position, I will look at the 100 other candidates I know are out there. That is one of the benefits of being the gatekeeper and wouldn’t you do the same thing.
  2. Managers don’t want naysayers on their team. Managers don’t want to deal with problems.  Many employees think that a manager’s job is to solve employee problems. If that were the case, all the folks that are working in daycare would be perfectly qualified to work as managers in corporate America. Managers are people, and people don’t like to work with problem creator.

I want to hire and promote employees that see the glass half full. Personally, I don’t want to hang out with a naysayer. I don’t want to work with someone who sees the glass half empty. If you think the world is going to come to an end, then go build a bunker and stockpile it with MRE’s and guns. I don’t need a cheerleader, but I don’t want a naysayer. If I am going to err, I am going to err on the side of a cheerleader.

Anyone can be happy-go-lucky when times are good

I am not looking to hire employees who will only perform in the best of times. I am looking to hire someone to perform consistently in the worst of times when deadlines create stress and lack of revenue creates panic.

The team that can function at these times will be the team that sees the light at the end of the tunnel.  This will be the team that makes it through and the team that I want to be on.  “Can’t” and “impossible” won’t be in this teams vocabulary.

If you want to get hired, and more importantly if you want to receive more opportunity in your current gig, stay away from the use of the words “hate”, “can’t”, “impossible” and “stupid”.

I have listed only 4 words that will end job interviews.  Know any others?  Let me know which ones have you seen kill careers and interviews below in the comments.

See you at the after party,

II. Фонетическая и лексическая зарядка

Let’s state our lesson with our conversational warming up on the topic “My future profession.

Warm-up

Do you know what we call a person who looks after an office or a block of flats? (caretaker, janitor). Now, we are going to play a game to see how attentive you are. Break into teams: Team A (the 1st row). Team B (the 2nd one). While listening to the story “In the Hospital”, Team A must stand up on hearing the word “doctor”. Team B must stand up when they hear the word

 “business”

In the Hospital

It … (1) in a big hospital.

One man … (2) to see a doctor for an annual check-up. He … (3) into the waiting room of the hospital, but there …(4) no one in . “Sure, …(13) the young man, this hospital is for everybody”.

“O.K. then. I’d like to talk about my headaches”.

“I’m sorry, headaches are not my business”.

“Ah, all right, then what would you advise me if I don’t hear well?”

“I’m awfully sorry, ears are not my business”.

“O.K. In this case, give a prescription for these pills!”

“I’m sorry, pills are not my area in the hospital”.

“Goodness, then what is YOURS?”

“You see, I’m a janitor”.

Put all these words into the gaps.

III. Ознакомление с лексическим материалом

When you were younger you used to sing a song “When I was a sailor, a sailor, a sailor. When I was a sailor, a sailor was I”.

You showed what you did when you were a sailor. The song was rather long because you substituted the word sailor to teacher, builder, soldier and so on. This was perhaps your first acquaintance with the list of professions. Today we are going to add quite a few words to the list.

 VI. Развитие навыков чтения

And now let’s pass over to the reading of the text “My profession”. But before reading I’ll give some pupils a few words and word-combinations from the text.

They must create sentences or situations using the text.

Choice- выбор

To spend- проводить

To learn- учить

School- leaver- выпускник

Lawyer- юрист

My profession.

Most young people have many opportunities open to them when they leave school. Here are some of them. They can leave school at sixteen and take a low-paid job, often a manual one, such as working in a shop or a factory. They can leave school at sixteen, take a job but spend one day a week at a college of Further Education learning more about the theory and practice of their work.

There is also another choice for a school leaver. He can go to any college or university. If he goes to a Technical College, he can get a qualification in a practical skill such as engineering, art and design, secretarial work, business studies or child care. He can go to a College of Education and train to be a teacher. He can go to a Medical School or hospital and learn to become a doctor. These training courses take from two to seven years. If a student has very good results on finishing school he can go to a university and get a degree in a subject like languages, Math, Philosophy, Literature, Law and Science. This normally takes five years.

I am going to apply to the Rostov State University and get a degree in law. I believe that the profession of a lawyer is one of the most important nowadays. Lawyers have to solve a lot of problems that still exist in our society. Like it or not. Law controls our life, both to protect us and to protect others. It is very important to know the law regulating relationships of the people or state. So, the great duty of lawyers is to do their beat to help citizens become more effective through a better understanding of the law and society, to protect human rights and legal interests of citizens, institutions and the state.

After graduating from the university I can work as a lawyer.

I personally decided to train to be a solicitor. I’ll find to take a five-year course of studies. After that I’ll be able to work hard especially at the beginning of my law career but this job promises good promotion and personal development prospects and good pay.

Film-star.

Rosy loved the cinema and wanted to become a film-star. When she was twelve she said to her parents, “I want to be a film-star.”

But it was not easy. After she left school, she got into films – not as a star – she became one of the people in a crowd scene.

One evening the man at the agency called her and said, “There is a job for you tomorrow, Rosy. Come at eight o’clock. You’ll be a secretary”.

Rosy reached the studios at a quarter to eight. She waited three hours before they came to her scene.

The scene was very short: the star, a famous American actor, came and stopped in front of where Rosy was sitting.

“I want you to look at Harry when he comes in, explained the director, and say, “Mr. Marlow, there is a call for you!” Can you say that?”

Rosy said she could and did everything the director told her to do.

The director was very pleased, and the star smiled at her.

“That’s great”, said the director. “ Thanks”.

Rosy was very happy that evening.

Some months later she booked two seats for the premiere and went to see her film with Michael, her boy- friend.

It was a good film but there was no Rosy in it. Her scene together with many other unimportant scenes had been cut out.
