Common Words to Describe Someone with their Meanings

Sympathetic

This is one of the most used words to describe someone. It indicates that one holds a certain emotion towards someone or something. This usually involves thinking about someone as an extension of themselves. In other words, people are usually described as being either kind or mean.

Sensible

This word indicates that one is in touch with one’s surroundings. Sensible people are often organized and calmer than people who are not. So, someone who is described as being sensible is someone who considers the fact that others exist and what they want.

Cute

It is used to describe how a person looks rather than their character. A person could be described as cute if they are kind and like to make others happy. Of course, a person’s character can also be described, but it is more informal and childlike.

Loyal

People are also described as loyal if they do not try to gain profit or fame at the expense of their group. A loyal person usually does what they said they would do. If they do not, then they are not loyal. A person described as being loyal might not always get along with people they are supposed to, but they will stick by their friends through thick or thin.

Funny

This is probably the easiest word to describe someone. A person described as being funny lets people know they are a little silly on the inside. It means they are not serious all the time and can crack a joke when they need to. They are either funny or not.

Reliable

This word means that the person is trustworthy. They are reliable if they tell the truth and keep to their word. It means the person does not lie to get what they want or to get attention. This is probably the most important word to describe someone. They are either reliable or not.

Generous

This word means that the person is generous with their time and money. They are generous if they are willing to give something to help others. This may include money or time.

Smart

This word is similar to the word generous, but it refers to someone’s intelligence. Generally, people are described as being smart if they can do things on a higher level than others. In other words, they are smart enough to do things others could not do.

Adventurous

This word means that the person is ready to take a risk. They are adventurous if they try new things and try new foods, meet new people, and explore new places.

So there you have it, top words that will help you describe people. Use these words wisely because they can help you make the perfect match.

The idea for the Describing Words engine came when I was building the engine for Related Words (it’s like a thesaurus, but gives you a much broader set of related words, rather than just synonyms). While playing around with word vectors and the «HasProperty» API of conceptnet, I had a bit of fun trying to get the adjectives which commonly describe a word. Eventually I realised that there’s a much better way of doing this: parse books!

Project Gutenberg was the initial corpus, but the parser got greedier and greedier and I ended up feeding it somewhere around 100 gigabytes of text files — mostly fiction, including many contemporary works. The parser simply looks through each book and pulls out the various descriptions of nouns.

Hopefully it’s more than just a novelty and some people will actually find it useful for their writing and brainstorming, but one neat little thing to try is to compare two nouns which are similar, but different in some significant way — for example, gender is interesting: «woman» versus «man» and «boy» versus «girl». On an inital quick analysis it seems that authors of fiction are at least 4x more likely to describe women (as opposed to men) with beauty-related terms (regarding their weight, features and general attractiveness). In fact, «beautiful» is possibly the most widely used adjective for women in all of the world’s literature, which is quite in line with the general unidimensional representation of women in many other media forms. If anyone wants to do further research into this, let me know and I can give you a lot more data (for example, there are about 25000 different entries for «woman» — too many to show here).

The blueness of the results represents their relative frequency. You can hover over an item for a second and the frequency score should pop up. The «uniqueness» sorting is default, and thanks to my Complicated Algorithm™, it orders them by the adjectives’ uniqueness to that particular noun relative to other nouns (it’s actually pretty simple). As you’d expect, you can click the «Sort By Usage Frequency» button to adjectives by their usage frequency for that noun.

Special thanks to the contributors of the open-source mongodb which was used in this project.
