Many use the Microsoft Office suite for various tasks, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best. However, some users reported that Office keeps asking them to sign in.
The problem can be encountered on all versions of Office and doesn’t seem to go away on its own. So, if you are wondering how to stop Office 365 sign-in pop-up, here’s everything you need to know.
Why does Microsoft Office keep making me sign in?
Here are some of the reasons Microsoft sign-in keeps popping up:
- Running a non-licensed copy of Office – Many users encountered the error when using a non-licensed copy or after getting a license through unofficial means. So, make sure that’s not the case.
- Corrupt credentials – In some cases, users reported that their login credentials were corrupt, and, as a result, the login message popped up.
- Limit the number of devices you are signed in to – Microsoft Office supports up to 5 devices at a time, and if you are logged into more, you may receive the sign-in prompt.
And while we are at it, here are some similar errors:
- Outlook keeps asking for password in Office 365 – This problem can occur if your credentials aren’t correct.
- Outlook keeps asking me to sign in – Sometimes your profile can get corrupted, and fix the issue, it’s advised to recreate it.
- Microsoft Word keeps asking me to sign in – Like other tools in the suite, too, it shows continuous prompts to sign in, and our solutions would help.
What do I do if Office keeps asking me to sign in?
Before trying the solutions listed here, make sure to try these:
- Ensure you are not using Office on more than the approved devices. Try signing out on others and verify if that fixes things.
- Update Windows to the latest available version.
If these two don’t work, the ones listed next surely would.
1. Check your credentials
- Press Windows + R to open Run, type control panel in the text field, and hit Enter.
- Click on User accounts.
- Now, choose to Manage Windows Credentials under Credentials Manager.
- Locate any entries that start with MicrosoftOffice or OneDrive, select them individually, and click on Remove.
- Now, click Yes in the confirmation prompt.
- Once done, again press Windows + R, paste the following command, and then hit Enter:
%localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveonedrive.exe /reset
Some PC issues are hard to tackle, especially when it comes to corrupted repositories or missing Windows files. If you are having troubles fixing an error, your system may be partially broken.
We recommend installing Restoro, a tool that will scan your machine and identify what the fault is.
Click here to download and start repairing.
According to users, if Office keeps asking you to sign in, it might be issues with the Credentials Manager to blame. So, once done with the steps here, go ahead and open Microsoft Office, log in, and verify if the problem is fixed.
2. Modify the Registry
NOTE
Before you try this solution, make sure to create a restore point or back up the Registry. And follow the steps here as it is without making any other changes.
- Press Windows + R to open the Run command, type regedit in the text field, and click OK.
- Now, paste the following path in the address bar and hit Enter:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice16.0CommonIdentity
- Now, right-click on the Identity folder in the navigation pane, and select Delete.
- Click Yes in the confirmation prompt.
Now, please restart the computer, launch Office and verify whether it still keeps asking you to sign in. If yes, try the next solution.
3. Change OneDrive settings
- Click on the OneDrive icon in the System Tray, choose the gear icon, and select Settings.
- Please navigate to the Office tab, and uncheck the option for Use Office applications to sync Office files that I open.
- Click on Turn off in the prompt.
- Finally, click OK to save the changes.

4. Repair Microsoft Office
- Press Windows + R to open Run, type appwiz.cpl, and click OK.
- Now, select Microsoft Office, and click on Change.
- Click Yes in the UAC prompt.
- Next, select Online Repair, and then click on the Repair button.
- Again, click Repair in the confirmation prompt.
If the previous methods didn’t work and Office still keeps asking you to sign in, it could be a problem with the program itself, and a repair should fix things.
5. Update Office
- Launch any Microsoft Office application (we used Word), and click on the File menu.
- Navigate to Account, click on Update options, and select Update now.
- If a newer version is available, it will automatically be installed.
That’s it! This should fix the problem and get things running if all the previous solutions fail. So now on, Office won’t keep asking you to sign in.

Logging into and staying logged into Microsoft/Office 365
One of the conveniences of the modern world is being able to sign in to a service is having that service remember who we are, saving time and frustration with constant login prompts!
Microsoft 365 is no different.
Warning: You should only ever choose the option to stay signed in to Microsoft 365 on a trusted device such as a work computer/laptop, you should NEVER choose this option if you sign in on an untrusted public device.
Ok, so now the warning is out of the way, how do you stay signed in to Microsoft 365?
The Microsoft 365 sign in page can be found at https://www.office.com
When you login to Office 365 using either a password or password/MFA prompt you should be presented with the following dialog box.
Clicking Yes means that for this browser you will remain logged into Microsoft 365 unless you
- Sign out from the Microsoft 365 menu
- Clear your browser cache/cookies
If you click No then you will be kept signed unless you
- Sign out from the Microsoft 365 menu
- Close the browser session
If when logging in you are not seeing this prompt it’s possible that at some point in time you said No to the prompt and also selected the “don’t show this again” checkbox, in this instance you may be prompted to enter your password/MFA details for every session you start, if that’s the case then try the following
- Sign out of Microsoft 365
- Clear the browser cache and cookies
- Close and restart the browser
- Login to Microsoft 365
The prompt should reappear and you can make the appropriate choice.
Note that I’ve said this applies to your current browser, if you use multiple browsers then you would need to perform the above for each browser you use, for more information on which browser you should be using for microsoft 365 see our blog post here

Office 365 stay signed in prompt security risk
Why is this a security risk? For example, the user signs in to Office 365 and clicks on Yes when the prompt is showing. When finished working, the user did not click the sign out button. Most of the users close the browser, and they quit.
When closing the browser and opening the Office 365 portal, you are still signed in without entering the credentials. What if it’s a public computer? That means another random person got access to your confidential emails, documents, and more.
Important: Warn the users in the organization for not using a shared computer if accessing the Office portal. If they don’t have many options and have to sign in, use the Sign Out button when done working. Closing a browser is not the same as signing out.
Users are signing in to the Office 365 portal. After entering the credentials, the users get a prompt: Stay signed in? Do this to reduce the number of times you are asked to sign in. Don’t show this again.
Disable office 365 stay signed in prompt
Sign in to the Azure portal using a Global administrator account for the directory. Click the menu in the top left corner.
Click in the menu on Azure Active Directory.
Click Company branding and click the configuration. In my example, it’s Default. If you don’t see a configuration, you need to create one.
Scroll to the bottom to find the setting Show option to remain signed in. Click No and click Save.
The users will not get the prompt to stay signed in Office 365 after entering their credentials.
Test it out by closing the browser and starting the browser. You have to sign in every time from now on. Remember to clear the cache of the browser if there are sign in issues. Another way is to test in a private window.

As a content creator, regular user and administrator of Azure AD and Office 365, I am constantly testing and trying new configurations to get a better understanding of some of the policies I implement. Lately I have been testing a lot of with a separate account and am constantly prompted with Stay Signed In? Do this to reduce the number of times you are asked to sign in.
Perhaps this is something you’ve encountered and want to know how to disable that prompt. When using an incognito window, it doesn’t matter if you choose to not prompt again because it will set a cookie. However, when you close that browser that setting will get wiped away and the next time you login again, you’ll get prompted. So, how do we disable that?
In order to disable this feature you will need to have elevated rights, in my case I’ll be signing in with a Global Administrator.
- Sign in and navigate to Azure Active Directory
- On the left Pane, select Company Branding
- If this has never been configured before, it will prompt you to configure like the image above
- Click on the configure and scroll to the bottom, On Show option to remain signed in select No
- While you’re in there, take advantage and setup your company branding
- Add logos and branding to give your tenant that extra sazz
Conclusion
With this option set to no you now have a couple of benefits at your disposal. One of them being that you get rid of that really annoying popup when signing in with incognito mode. The other being that it can potentially be a security risk to have a user stay signed in when they shouldn’t necessarily be. In a future article we’ll be talking about setting up a conditional access policy to determine the sign in frequency, but more on that later. At least now they won’t be getting that sign in prompt so we’ve accomplished our goal.
