How to Play Thanksgiving Word Scramble

I love word scrambles for kids because it takes no time to prepare and it’s super easy to explain. There is a mixture of long and short words so that the whole family can play. All you have to do is print it out for everyone in the family, and unscramble the words!

To play, rearrange the letters to come up with a Thanksgiving-related word. Then write your answer on the blank line next to the letters. Repeat for all 50 words on the list. It’s that easy!

Tips and Tricks for Word Scrambles

To keep this more relaxing simply play it as is and have everyone unscramble the list of words throughout the day. If you are looking to add a little excitement and switch things up, check out our fun tips below!

Add a Time Limit

To make it more competitive, all you have to do is add a time limit of 2-3 minutes. Then have everyone unscramble as many words as they can before the time runs out. It’s a sure way to get everyone thinking quickly and scrambling to finish on time!

Offer a Prize

You can add even more competition by offering a prize for the person who unscrambles all of the words first. I always love giving candy, especially a Thanksgiving-themed treat like candy corn. Or you can let the winner get the first piece of pie!

Whatever you choose, offering a prize is sure to keep everyone excited and interested in playing.

Divide and Conquer!

Another fun way to play word scramble is to divide the list into sections. For example, you can choose to have 5 sections with 10 words in each. Each group of 10 words then becomes a round. Divide everyone into groups or play solo and see who can solve those 10 words the quickest.

It makes the game more competitive and flexible because you can play each round periodically throughout the day.

Play on Teams

Unscrambling words on a team makes it fun for everyone. It also takes out the frustration because if one person can’t figure out a word, someone else in the group will probably know the answer!

Divide everyone into teams and have them work together. You can even strategically place younger kids with adults so that they will have someone to help them figure out each of the words.

Playing on teams is a great way to bond and get everyone involved in the fun!

14 Free Thanksgiving Word Puzzles for Kids

I always think that getting ready for Thanksgiving will be the calm before the storm of the holiday season. Then somehow the month of November whizzes past me and I wonder what the heck happened to my supposedly calm month? This year should be even crazier with everything I have on my plate, but I honestly wouldn’t change a thing. I don’t need Thanksgiving to be grateful for all the wonderful things in my life!

These word worksheets are a great addition to a busy family gathering, especially if you need a smart activity for the kids to do while they are waiting for the big meal. You’ve already got a “kids’ table” anyway, right? Might as well throw some crayons and printables out to keep the kids busy while the adults are cooking, visiting, or watching football. Some are challenging enough to stump the parents, too!

Below are two word scrambles and a cryptogram. Of course, these sheets can also double as coloring pages. I love the idea of hanging them up around the dining room throughout the day so the kids have a hand in helping with the festivities. Answers to the word scramble and cryptogram are the same words in the same order: Pilgrims, Mayflower, Turkey, Indians, November, Harvest, Corn, Plymouth, Feast and Gratitude.

New this year are an additional double word scramble and cryptogram using just T words associated with November and Thanksgiving. The answers to these two word puzzles are also the same words in the same order: Turkey, Thanksgiving, Thankful, Thursday, Tradition, Treat, Table, Tummy, Together, Topaz, Thyme, and Trivet. There’s also a fun Scrabble-style word game printable to challenge your Thanksgiving dinner guests to see how many words they can come up with using the letters in the word “Thanksgiving”!

Of course, you probably don’t want to forget the traditional “what I’m thankful for” activity where everyone shares something they’re grateful for in honor of Thanksgiving. It can be pretty entertaining to hear the things that some of the smaller family members come up with. The adults tend to see the bigger picture and say things like, “I’m thankful for my family’s health” or “I’m thankful to be employed.” Kids, on the other hand, are more likely to be thankful for things like the existence of candy or their toys or…whatever they happen to see out the window the moment their turn comes around!
