Know what rhymes with orange? Have another rhyming word for orange? Let us know!
Is orange wrong or has spelling mistakes?
A handful of words form half rhymes with orange (using the latter half of the word), including hinge, cringe, and impinge. However, sporange, the botanical structure that creates spores, is an existing word that forms a near-perfect rhyme with orange.
Orange you glad we didn’t rhyme ‘banana’?
The word orange is notorious for being un-rhymable. The rhyming sound of a word is determined by its sound from the vowel in the last stressed syllable to the word’s end. Orange can be pronounced either as a two-syllable word (AR-inj or OR-inj) or a dialectal one-syllable word (ARNJ or ORNJ). Thus, as a two-syllable word with the stress on the penultimate syllable, it requires at least a two-syllable word to rhyme with. And, indeed, there is an obscure one that rhymes with orange that your grade-school teacher and parents did not tell you about (because odds are they, like many others, were unaware of its existence). We’ll get to that word after a few words about a different way to rhyme with orange.
Types of Rhyme
Language experts consider words with the same sounding final syllable as constituting a special kind of rhyme. Thus, orange can be rhymed, imperfectly, with one-syllable words having a final j, as in hinge and cringe, and with two-syllable words ending in that sound, such as impinge, challenge, and lozenge. The result of matching such words with orange is called half rhyme, sometimes also called near rhyme, slant rhyme, or oblique rhyme. In a half rhyme, the words correspond only in their final consonant sounds, and not in a preceding vowel sound. Although they aren’t referring to this literary device by name, both rapper Eminem and billionaire Elon Musk have presented an example of it in their challenging of the idea that there is no word that rhymes with orange.
EMINEM: Yeah. It’s just in the enunciation of it. Like, people say that the word, orange, doesn’t rhyme with anything … I can think of a lot of things that rhyme with orange.
ANDERSON COOPER: What rhymes with orange? I’m trying to think but I can’t think of anything.
EMINEM: If you take it—if you’re taking the word at face value and you just say orange, nothing is going to rhyme with it exactly. If you enunciate it and you make it like more than one syllable—
ANDERSON COOPER: Mm-Hm.
EMINEM: —Orange, you could say like, I put my orange four-inch door hinge in storage and ate porridge with George.
— CBS News, 7 Oct. 2010
Door hinge
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 9, 2019
Of course, the two-word term door hinge does not form a true rhyme with orange, but half of it can be used to create a half rhyme with the name of the citrus fruit.
A Word That Actually Rhymes with Orange
Sporange (SPOR-anj) is the name for the structure within which spores are produced, and this technical word comes closest to forming a perfect rhyme with orange. We think that you can forgive your teachers and parents for not telling you about it. And, honestly, its botanic quality makes it all but useless as a rhyming word with orange in the realm of poetry (but it would be a great ace up your sleeve in a rhyming game).
So, rhymers, if you are so inclined to end a line of a couplet with orange, there are options. Many words can be conceived to make a half rhyme, or there is always sporange. Though you might have an easier time contemplating half rhymes rather than how to end a line with sporange.

You sometimes hear that the one word that no other word rhymes with is orange. In fact, that is a myth. There are two words that rhyme with orange. These are technically “perfect rhymes” because they are an exact rhyme. There are also many words that are “slant rhymes.” These are words that have similar, but not identical rhymes.
Perfect Rhymes
Perfect rhymes are words that sound very similar to the word you want to rhyme. They usually begin with a different consonant and are followed up by different vowel combinations. Some examples are:
- Moon – soon
- Dog – frog
- Book – cook
They do not have to have exactly the same spelling though.
- Cane – rain
- Great – late
- Though – so
You can also use homonyms as rhymes. A homonym is two or more words that have different meanings, are spelled differently, but sound the same. You come across these words all the time:
- Two – to – too
- Hey – hay
- Fair – fare
- Affect – effect
- But – butt
What are the words that are perfect rhymes for orange?
- Sporange: which is a botanical term for a part of a fern (where the asexual spores are created).
- Blorenge: which is a mountain in Wales, UK.
Unfortunately, unless you are writing a song about the mountain, or about the properties of ferns, you probably are not going to be able to use them to rhyme with the word orange.
Slant Rhymes
Slant rhymes are sometimes called near rhymes, imperfect rhymes, oblique rhymes, or (my favorite) lazy rhymes.
A slant rhyme is when two words have a partial, near, or close rhyme. They can share just a vowel or consonant sound. The stressed syllables of the ending consonants sound the same. The vowels that precede them do not. They are used quite a bit in poetry as well as in music. Some examples are:
- Game – grime
- Worm – swarm
- There – here
- Cart – park
One example from a song you have probably heard is in Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind” (which is actually full of slant rhymes):
“Though I never knew you at all…
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled.”
What are the slant rhymes for orange?
There are quite a few:
- Binge
- Plunge
- Fringe
- Sponge
- Arrange
- Exchange
- Knowledge
- Soaring
- Sausage
- Warrant
Slant rhymes often work well in music because the performer is not always stressing the correct syllables in words. They also do not always enunciate (or clearly pronounce) each word.
Are There any Words that Do Not Have Rhymes?
There are quite a few words in the same class as orange: they are difficult (but not impossible) to rhyme. Some examples are:
- Chaos
- Circle
- Beige
- Dance
- Music
- Film
- Gulf
You can use slant rhymes to “cheat” and make a rhyme for any word. Songwriters and poets do it all the time. But there are very few words that have no rhyme. Some examples are:
- Silver
- Wolf
- Bulb
- Walrus
- Purple
There are also a few that make life absolutely miserable for the poets and songwriters:
- Woman
- Husband
- Angel
- Month
- Rhythm
You are now challenged: write a poem about a silver wolf who takes a purple walrus as her husband. Throw in the word orange just for fun.

Excerpt from “Brainless”:
Threw my first punch, end of story
Still in my skulls a vacant, empty void
Been using it more as a bin for storage Take some inventory and as gorge as a Ford engine door hinge syringe an orange an extension cord and a Ninja sword
Excerpt from “Role Model”:
Jump behind the wheel like it was still legal
I’m dumb enough to walk in a store and steal
So I’m dumb enough to ask for a date with Lauryn Hill
Some people only see that I’m white, ignorin’ skill
‘Cause I stand out like a green hat with a orange bill
Excerpt from “Get you Mad”:
I’m sick enough to beat you to death with a feather pillow
Tipped over some cows, just for a joke and a laugh
Jumped up, choked a giraffe, snapped his neck and broke it in half
Wagin’ wars, went on stage and sprayed Cage with ‘Agent Orange’
And wiped my ass with his page in Source (here!)
The demon is here, steamin’ this year
I rip Mystikal’s voice box out, scream in his ear
