One of the most important skills beginning readers need to learn is reading sight words quickly. Sight words are not only words that are difficult to phonetically sound out, but also words that they will see SO often. Our goal is for them to be able to recognize these words and read them without needing to sound them out at all! These free sight word practice worksheets will help your students practice reading sight word sentences with fluency!

Sight Word Practice
Reading sight words in context improves reading fluency! Use these teacher-tested and student-approved activities. Sign up below and get this sight word practice sent straight to your inbox!
HOW TO TEACH SIGHT WORDS
Color words are the perfect way to introduce reading sight words to your students. These are words they have seen and will continue to see in the real world around them.
One thing that I see often with my kindergarten students is their ability to read sight words in isolation, but having a tougher time making the connections when they see these words in text. I knew I needed to help guide them in reading the sight words in sentences and provide them with repeated practice to ensure success. These free sight word pages really helped my students practice reading the color words in context.
Sight word practice for kindergarten
These sight word pages are great for scaffolding because we start with their strength- reading each sight word in isolation. Then we use the skills we’ve learned to read each word in a sentence. Your students will
- Touch and read each word in isolation
- Highlight the focus word in each sentence
- Use the picture clues to help read the sentence
- Read each sentence 3 times for fluency
How to use these fluency pages
During our guided reading time, we work together to read the sight word sentences. First, we touch and read the sight word at the top chorally. Then we search and highlight the word in each sentence. We read the sentences altogether.
Then each students takes a turn reading a sentence aloud. This helps build confidence in a safe setting. The other students follow along with their finger as one students read.
For the last read, each students points and reads in their minds. I go around the table and have them read each sentence to me out loud. This is a great way for me to assess their reading fluency. If they finish reading before I get to them, they rewrite a sentence and illustrate the picture at the bottom of the page.
These sight word fluency pages have been a game changer in our classroom! They have truly build confidence in my readers!
You can download the color words for your students to practice reading and improve their reading fluency as well.
VocabularySpellingCity’s Kindergarten reading word lists are designed to support all of the students in your classroom with reading vocabulary practice. Kindergarten students in one class may have a great range of reading abilities. Some are already reading, while others are just beginning to connect the letters on the page to the language they speak. Kindergarten reading activities, therefore, must be geared to pre-readers and readers alike. Read MoreRead Less
Reading at “Just Right” Levels
As a teacher, you know that it is important for new readers to read books that are at a level that provides just enough challenge and not too much frustration. VocabularySpellingCity notes three popular reading level measurements for each book on the kindergarten list. Knowing the reading levels helps you match word lists to your kindergarten curriculum. The lists for independent reading are words that the students know but are learning to read. When pre-readers work with games like Audio Word Match, they make connections between the letters on the page and the words they speak.
Independent Reading and Read-Aloud Books
The spoken vocabulary of new readers is more complex than their written vocabulary. For kindergarten readers, it is important to engage their interests in literature that is beyond their reading ability and keep expanding aural vocabulary through read-aloud works as well as independent reading works. VocabularySpellingCity provides literature lists for read-aloud chapter books to help students expand their vocabulary and their exposure to literature, as well as for books that students can read on their own.
Common Core State Standards for Literature
VocabularySpellingCity literature word lists include six books and four poems from the Common Core State Standards literature list. Books like P. D. Eastman’s Are You My Mother? and poems like Marchetter Chute’s Drinking Fountain provide students ample opportunity to practice their reading skills and to meet reading standards in literature such as being able to “ask and answer questions about unknown words in a text” and “With prompting and support, retell familiar stories, including key details.” Reading instruction with these books also helps students to meet the requirements for Reading: Foundational Skills including print concepts, phonological awareness, and phonics and word recognition.
The following games are recommended for Kindergarten Reading Vocabulary Lists.

Kindergarten sight words are words that a child learns to recognize in their whole form, rather than sounding them out. These words usually appear frequently in texts or are difficult to decode. Some reading programs focus on sight words more than others.
The Good and the Beautiful kindergarten sight words are taught throughout our Level K Language Arts Reading Booster A program (which can be used separately of the course).
This post shares common kindergarten sight word lists (as well as flashcards and posters) and weighs the pros and cons of focusing on sight word memorization versus teaching phonics.
The Good and the Beautiful Kindergarten Sight Words List

Should Children Memorize Sight Words?
Pros of Memorizing Sight Words | If the most frequently used words in texts are memorized and the child doesn’t have to take time to stop and decode the words, the child can read more quickly and pleasantly. |
Cons of Memorizing Sight Words | Most of the Dolch and Fry kindergarten sight words can be easily decoded.
Children have only a certain amount of time to learn each day. Time spent memorizing high-frequency words can instead be applied to a good phonics program that teaches the child how to decode and read those words as well as many others. Memorizing words can be just as hard and take just as long as learning to decode the words. |
The Good and the Beautiful Philosophy on Kindergarten Sight Words | The Good and the Beautiful, one of the most widely used homeschool curriculum programs, focuses on phonics, while having kindergarteners memorize a short list of the highest-frequency words and words that can’t be decoded easily. This method has proven successful with tens of thousands of children using The Good and The Beautiful Language Arts Courses. |
A little bit of practice each day goes a long way—consistency is the key. Practice sight words daily if possible, but don’t introduce too many at once. Younger children do best with four to eight sight words at a time.
Teaching sight words can be easy and fun with the simple practice ideas found in our free activity download.
