A growing collection of free printable fill in word puzzles for kids.
What is a Fill In Puzzle?
A fill in puzzle is similar to a crossword puzzle, but instead of clues, the words are already given. The solver must work to fit in all the words in the puzzle.
How to Do a Fill In Puzzle
A 10 letter word can only fit in a spot for 10 letters.
But what if there’s more than one 10 letter word, which word do you use?
You have to choose the right word so that all the other words of the puzzle will still be able to fit in.
Steps to Solve a Fill In Puzzle
Here are the basic steps in solving this type of word puzzle:
- pick an empty word box to try and figure out its word
- count how many letters the word needs to be
- count the letters of any word box that shares a letter with the word you’re trying to solve
- observe whatever is common between the 2 intersecting words (which letter spot is going to be the same in each word)
For example, “what 6 letter word’s 4th letter has the same letter as the first letter of an 8 letter word” - look at your word bank and figure out which words match that criteria
- if there’s only one possible option, fill those words in the puzzle
- if there’s more than one possible option, skip that word for now and move on to try and solve another word box

How to use the SUMMER Word Searches & Word Puzzles Pack:
- Choose the level of difficulty appropriate for your child. Look for these symbols:
Level 1 (Pre-K):
Appropriate for preschool children (age 3 – 4) who are just starting to learn their letters. Includes four words to practise and very large print. Children identify and colour or trace the beginning letter of each word. Includes upper case and lower case puzzles. I’ve also included different beginning letter possibilities, where appropriate. For example, for “watermelon”, I’ve included the letters “W” and “M”, as you may prefer to teach your preschoolers the word “melon” instead.
Level 2 (K):
Appropriate for kindergarten children (age 5) who are learning to read, write and spell. Includes six words to practise and large print. There are three kinds of puzzle:
- word search – includes only horizontal words.
- word match – children draw a line from the word to the correct picture.
- beginning letter fill – children must complete the first letter of each word.
Level 3 (First Grade):
Suitable for first grade (age 6-7). Puzzles include eight words to practise and smaller more “grown-up” print. There are 3 kinds of puzzle:
- word search – includes both horizontal and vertical words to find.
- word match – children draw a line from the word to the correct picture.
- complete and match – children fill in a number of missing letters for each word, then draw a line to the correct picture.
- When they have finished the puzzles, kids can colour the pictures.
- Print on normal printer paper and photocopy, or laminate if you want re-usable puzzles!
