Creating your first ‘Fill in the gap’

The goal of the fill in the gap puzzle is to create a sentence that contains one or multiple ‘gaps’. Some people call them ‘blanks’ as well. These gaps/blanks can be anything, ranging from words to numbers to even punctuation!

This allows you to create any grammar exercise that you like, any math assignment or even plain open questions with an image. The Fill in the gap puzzle is super versatile.

The ‘Instruction’ field allows you to mention how the puzzle player is supposed to find the answer. For example, by giving the present tense of a certain verb.

Setting the ‘gaps’ within your sentence

The gaps can be created by clicking on the words/parts generated below the sentence. When a word is a gap, it will be shown in pink.

So please don’t create your own gaps by putting in your own underscores like ‘___’, this does not work and has no added value :).

Adding a ‘Word bank’

The Premium-tab gives you access to the ‘Word bank’. This will make it easier for puzzle players to solve the ‘fill in the gap’ since you can choose from all of the available correct answers.

The ‘Reload given answers’ and ‘Disable answer control’ are some other nice answer management tools that can help the user with continuing the puzzle later on or make the exercise harder by not giving any feedback if a given answer is correct or not.

Using audio to create a dictation activity

An alternative way of using the fill in the gap puzzle is by setting up an audio track alongside your sentence filled with gaps.

This gives all sorts of awesome extra possibilities, since you can use your sentence as an interactive dictation activity.

You can easily set this up by clicking the Premium ‘Upload audio’ button and uploading your file (.wav/.mp3/.ogg/.mp4).

How does the gap fill maker works? First you can if you want to type a title for the puzzle. Type or copy 1 or more sentences in the lower editbox. Click on the ‘add sentence’ button. The sentences will be copied into the field ‘gap fill text’. You can after this add more sentences. When you have all the sentences in the ‘gap fill text’, you can create the gaps. You just click on the words where you want the gaps. When you want the word back in the sentence, you just click in the gap space and the word will come back. If you want to edit or delete a sentence in the ‘gap fill text’, you just right click on the sentence. A popup will come where you can change the sentence.

In the ‘gap fill words’ box are the words that has to be filled in the text. You can change the order of the words by clicking on the the shuffle button. Also you can convert all the words to lower case letters to make it a little more difficult.

Finally there are 3 options for the text of the gaps. The first option is to show the first letter of the word in the gap. The second option is to make the space of the gap all the same. And the third option is that you can see the length of the word in the gaps.
