Word pen not working

I’m having an issue with the Draw feature in Word 2016, and so are some of the users I support. We all have HP Elite X2 tablets. When I hover the pen over the tablet, the cursor appears in the right place. Once I touch the glass and start drawing, the lines appear about 2-3 inches above and to the left of where the pen is touching the screen. I’ve noticed it does the same thing when using the Draw with Touch function, using my finger. Also, it only happens when drawing. When erasing, the cursor is right where it should be. This only occurs in Word. The pen works fine in every other application. Of course, I’ve already tried recalibrating, and re-pairing the pen.

I normally use the tablet as a 3rd screen, connected to an HP USB-C docking station. I tried disconnecting from the dock, to see if anything changed, but it still happened. One of the user’s claimed that he was able to use it normally at home, once he was off our network, but I think he is mistaken. I don’t see how that would make any difference.

Our MS Office apps are hosted by Intermedia, but I’m not sure if that makes a difference. Also, Office is 32-bit, due to compatibility issues with software that integrates with it.

 I was able to fix this issue a few weeks ago, for another user, by doing a full re-install of Office. Just this past Friday, I tried to do the same thing on another machine, but even after the re-install, the issue remained the same. I tried a re-install on my own machine yesterday, with the same lack of results

Another user posted about the same issue in her office on the MS support forum, which I’m following, but we haven’t yet received a satisfactory answer. Her office is using Surface Pro 4 tablets, so this issue definitely isn’t relegated specifically to the X2.

I personally don’t use the feature, but I have users who would really like to be able to write on their Word docs. I’m hoping there’s a registry fix or something, or maybe a file in the Word folder needs to be refreshed. I’d really appreciate any help on this, as I’m pretty well stuck on it.

Microsoft Surface is a great device, but many users reported that Surface Pen is not writing while the buttons on the pen work without any problems. This is a strange issue, and in today’s article, we’ll show you how to fix it.

Why is my Surface Pen not working?

Surface Pen’s functionality can be impeded by numerous causes such as drained batteries, driver changes, compatibility issues, and so on.

If it is caused by a depleted battery, simply replace the AAAA battery with a new one. The problem should then be resolved.

There are various issues with Surface Pen that can occur, and speaking of issues, here are some common problems reported by users:

• Surface Pro 3, 4, 7 Pen not working – Sometimes your Surface Pro pen won’t work at all. This is usually caused by your battery, so make sure that it isn’t empty.
• Surface pen not working but connected – This problem can occur due to certain Bluetooth glitches. To fix the problem, simply unpair and pair your pen again.
• Surface pen not working in Photoshop, in Word, OneNote – Sometimes your pen might not write on the screen or in other applications such as Word and OneNote. To fix the problem, you need to disable Intel devices in Device Manager and enable them again.
• Surface Pen is paired but not writing – This is a relatively common problem with Surface Pen, and you should be able to fix it using one of our solutions.
• Surface pen not working after update, battery change – Battery changes can cause several system changes and driver bugs which you have to adress as we have shown below.
• Surface pen not working but eraser is – Resetting your pen as we have shown below will make sure all its components work properly.
• Surface pen not showing up in Bluetooth – Updating your Bluetooth and pen drivers is one way to address this issue.
• Surface pen not working in Windows 10, 11 – Luckily the solutions below work in both OSs.
• Surface pen not writing but buttons work – Reboot the pen in order to start from a blank slate and see if the pen will work as well.
• Surface pen tip/button not working – Check the battery of the pen then make sure it is paired correctly to your device.

Without further ado, let’s jump right into the list of solutions!

How do I get my Surface Pen to work?

1. Update your drivers
2. Unpair your pen with the Surface and connect it again
3. Check your battery
4. Restart your Surface device
5. Run the troubleshooter
6. Disable and re-enable Intel(R) HD Graphics 520
7. Reboot the pen
8. Install the latest updates

1. Update your drivers

Sometimes issues with Surface Pen can occur if there’s a problem with your drivers. If one of your drivers is out of date, certain components might not work properly, and that will cause this and many other problems to appear.

In order to ensure that everything is working properly, we strongly suggest keeping all your drivers up to date. You can download the latest drivers manually, using Device Manager.

Alternatively, you can use third-party tools such as DriverFix to quickly and automatically update your drivers, so you should definitely try this.

First, download and install DriverFix. As soon as you start the tool, it will automatically scan your system for driver updates but also for missing or malfunctioning ones.

The process will take a little bit of time but when it’s done, you only need to perform a formality.

You have the option to install only one or more drivers one by one by ticking the corresponding boxes or checking the Select All box from the top and installing all the drivers in one step.

DriverFix

The Surface Pen driver will be installed in just a few seconds using DriverFix but the tool will fix all driver potential problems.

2. Unpair your pen with the Surface and connect it again

1. Open the Settings app. The fastest way to do that is to press the Windows Key + I.
2. When the Settings app opens, head over to the Devices section.
   
3. In the left pane select Bluetooth. Locate your pen in the left pane and click the Remove button. Now click on Yes to confirm.

Note: Once the pairing process is completed, your Surface Pen will start writing again. Bear in mind that this is just a workaround, so you might have to repeat this solution if the problem reappears.

3. Check your battery

If your Surface Pen is not writing, but other buttons work, the issue might be your battery.

In case you don’t know, Surface Pen uses two batteries, one of the pen and one for the buttons, so if the pen isn’t working, it’s rather likely that your battery is empty.

To fix this problem, simply replace the battery and check if that solves the problem for you. Many users reported that the battery was the problem, but after replacing it, the issue was permanently resolved.

4. Restart your Surface device

1. Press and hold the Power button on your Surface for 30 seconds. Make sure that the device is completely turned off.
2. Now press and hold the Volume Up and the Power button together for about 15 seconds. Your screen should flash the Surface logo. This is perfectly normal.
3. Release the buttons and wait for about 10 seconds. Press and release the power button to turn the Surface back on.

5. Run the troubleshooter

1. Open the Settings app. When the Settings app opens, head over to the Update & Security section.
   
2. Select Troubleshoot from the left pane. Choose Hardware and Devices from the list and click the Run the troubleshooter button.
   
3. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the troubleshooting.

Note: If the issue persists, you might want to try running the Bluetooth troubleshooter as well. Keep in mind that troubleshooters are designed to fix some common problems and glitches so they might not be able to fix your problem.

6. Disable and re-enable Intel(R) HD Graphics 520

If you need to resolve your Surface Pen issues quickly, you can use the following method to disable and enable your graphics driver again.

1. Press Win + X menu and choose Device Manager from the list. You can do that simply by right-clicking the Start button.

2. Locate the Intel(R) HD Graphics 520 on the list, right-click it and choose Disable device from the menu.

3. Click Yes when the confirmation dialog will appear.

4. Wait for a few seconds after disabling the device, right-click it again, and choose Enable from the menu.

Note: Bear in mind that you might have to repeat this solution every time the issue appears.

Some users recommend disabling and enabling the Intel(R) Precise Touch Device and also disabling and enabling their Surface Pen, so you might want to try that as well.

7. Reboot the pen

If the Surface Pen is not writing but the buttons work, you might be able to fix the issue simply by rebooting the pen. This is incredibly simple to do, and you just need to press and hold the pen button for about 10 seconds.

After doing that, the pen will reboot and the problem should be resolved.

8. Install the latest updates

1. Open the Settings app and go to the Update & Security section.
2. In the right pane, click the Check for updates button.
   

Windows will now check for available updates and download them in the background. Once the updates are downloaded, restart your PC to install the updates. After installing the latest updates, check if the problem is still there.

Using Inking in Microsoft Word

To enable inking, hover the Surface Pen or similar stylus anywhere in the tab region of a document. The inking context tab will open and provide various tools you can use to accomplish various tasks.

The Pens group provides a collection of colors, styles, and functions to choose from.

After selecting a color and size, just starting writing anywhere in the document as you normally would on a physical sheet of paper.

If you want to erase a mistake, activate the Eraser, then rub out any markings in the document.

The Surface Pen supports the selection of objects, too. After selecting one, you can use it to resize and modify items in your document.

Inking in Word also supports entering mathematical formulas. If you prefer writing instead of typing, you can activate the touch keyboard and enter text using the pen. If you annotate documents a lot, the inking tools in Word make it easy to highlight text. When you are done using Ink, select the Stop Inking button on the Ribbon.

Word 2016 and the Surface Pro Pen provide a powerful experience when preparing documents. When combined with capabilities such as saving as PDF, there is less of a need to print and sign documents anymore. If you consider a Surface Pro or any convertible tablet device running Windows 10, this is a key feature that will make your daily workflow easier.

This is very frustrating because it sometimes moves around store and they never have an answer for me because of how rarely it occurs. what I write and misses

And even the problem can vary. I’ve read some sites about modifying the registry, but I’d Home Premium. Like currently, the only two the next time I run it those things will happen again. It’s a purchased prefer to get some better advice from a place I trust..

My take is maybe the blame and saving, but PowerPoint is still not working well. So I installed the found a solution, to install updates for Office. And other times it happens copy of Office 2007. The first time it did this, Vista when I try to save documents.
