So when I first made the switch from Windows to macOS a few years back, one of the gripes I had and can imagine many other people having too is the absence of a stand-alone basic graphics or painting utility application. While Apple kind of pioneered such apps on personal computers with their Macintoshes shipping with MacPaint, the scenario has been quite different since the last 3 decades with MacPaint seeing its last release in 1988. Today we take a look at 5 different paint app for mac; whether you are someone who has been missing MS Paint on Mac OS or just looking for a basic painting app, this list is for you.
Before we begin
Even though we don’t have a full-fledged paint app, the Preview app does offer a few basic tools that you can use as an alternative. To get started, open Preview and open up the image you want to edit or simply open the image with Preview directly. Next show the Markup Toolbar by clicking the icon shown below.

You can now find a whole host of editing options from simple sketching and drawing to insertion of various shapes and text and even adjusting image parameters like exposure, contrast, sharpness, and a lot more. Seashore is a free, open-source paint application for Mac OS built entirely in Cocoa. While the UI might seem a little dated, the app has a lot of tricks up its sleeves which makes it an upgrade to Preview or Paint Brush.
SeaShore introduces the concept of layers, just like you have in Photoshop. The layers work like sheets of acetate stacked upon each other and the transparent areas allow you to see through to the underbidding layers. This allows you to create different layers for different effects and adjusting the effects separately or deleting them separately, thus providing easy management.
Seashore has a nifty gradient tool where you can specify the direction and strength of the gradient. Some other features include alpha channel editing, texts with subpixel rendering, and textures.

4. MS Paint using Wine or Play On Mac
If you didn’t know, Wine is an awesome and efficient way to run native Windows applications on your Mac and the best part about it is that unlike Bootcamp or VM installations, it does not require a windows license and does not add that overhead.
The setup process can be a little tedious, but it is definitely rewarding as you can run most of your Windows apps on your Mac. Play On Mac is a third-party tool built on Wine, which we recommend for installing Windows applications on Mac OS. Just download Play On Mac and all the dependencies required for Wine and then you should be able to install any Windows app of your choice. To install Paint, go to Install Apps > Graphics > Paint and hit download. MS Paint should be installed on your computer and it works just as well on any Windows PC.
Quick Tip: Although Wine is much less intensive or involving than Bootcamp or a virtual machine running Windows, it still takes up a lot of space with its dependencies and adds overhead. QEMU is an open-sourced virtualizer that allows you to run Windows for ARM on M1 Macs that would let you run Windows apps pretty seamlessly.

If you’re not a fan of installing a virtual machine and just want the MS Paint app for nostalgic reasons, JS Paint is a great alternative. It’s a web app that runs in your web browser and simulates the Windows XP version of paint. The web app is light-weight, doesn’t consume any resources, and works like a charm.
The toolbar on the left holds the same basic tools such as fill bucket, color picker, shapes, spray paint, text, etc. You can use the cursor to select a tool and just start drawing, it’s that simple. You can use it on any web browser and once the app is loaded, you can use it without an internet connection. JS Paint is great as an MS Paint alternative and you can check it out for free.

6. Pixelmator
While MS Paint is mostly about simplicity, it doesn’t hurt to include a feature-packed app for all the power users out there. As I said, by no means should Pixelmator be considered a basic app as it is far from that, having a boatload of options, effects, and features.
Pixelmator also offers layers with the option of layer styles presets where you can either use a predefined preset or save your own custom style preset. It also has retouching tools, color correction tools, and a real-time effects machine along with all the drawing and brushing tools. It even sports iCloud support and the ability to publish your pictures directly to social media.
What makes Pixelmator stand out from all the other professional graphic utility apps, is its flexibility; while it does have a lot of features, one can also just use the brush or pencil tools to doodle anything just as they would in any other paint app. The app is not at all overwhelming even for a beginner and strikes a perfect balance between simplicity and productivity. If you do not mind spending $30, Pixelmator is a keeper.

First, you need to download the software installer file, which you can find below, click on that link to save into your mac the file size is less than 6MB.
Step 2: Install Paintbrush
When you download it, you can see it is packed with Zip files, so you need to extract it using any extractor software, you can use RAR extractor or expander. Now you need to run the file.
It will show you a pop-up window when you open it, “Paintbrush 2” is an app downloaded from the internet. Are you sure you want to open it? Now you need to click the “Open” button to complete further steps.

If you’ve been a Windows user all your life and have recently started using a Mac, you should be starting to like it, despite the initial learning curve. However, you might be missing a fundamental Windows program—Microsoft Paint. And we can understand why.
Many of us have fond memories of Microsoft Paint and would enjoy having it on our Macs as well. Unfortunately, you can’t get Microsoft Paint directly on your Mac, but we’ll discuss some good alternatives below.
Why Isn’t Microsoft Paint Available for Mac?
You may have been hoping there was an option to get Microsoft Paint on your Mac. I mean, we all have dreams, right? Paint may not have been the best image editor around. However, despite being a bit slow and feature-limited, it is one of the most widely used graphics apps around. This is mostly because of its ease to use for even the most novice beginner.
Since Microsoft Paint is created directly by Microsoft as a built-in feature of Windows, it’s not available for macOS, and we don’t see any plans of it being ever released for Mac users. However, there are a few workarounds, which we’ve covered below.
Get Microsoft Paint on Mac by Installing Windows
If you really want Microsoft Paint on your Mac and don’t want to go with an alternative, a possible workaround is to install Windows on your Mac and use Paint that way.
Installing Windows is easy on Intel Macs using Boot Camp. It is a bit more tricky on newer Macs running Apple silicon chips (M1 or later) since they don’t feature Boot Camp because Windows cannot run on the ARM architecture. In this scenario, Parallels Desktop allows you to install Windows on your M1 Mac using virtualization software. However, the software is paid, and will set you back $79 a year if you choose to use it.
On the upside, there are loads of Microsoft Paint alternatives available for macOS, a lot of which work better and allow you to do loads more than Paint.

Paintbrush
Paintbrush is a simple and easy-to-use app that does exactly what you think it would—it allows you to draw on a canvas. It works pretty similar to Microsoft Paint, which is why we think it’s the best alternative available on macOS. The app also allows you to draw different shapes, use the Paint bucket tool, and more with ease.

Whether you’re drawing or editing images, GIMP is a good free alternative for Microsoft Paint. GIMP’s interface allows you to draw on a plain canvas, similar to what you would be doing on Paint. It features options for different brush styles and colors as well. The app also has advanced features such as the Paint Bucket tool, Magic Wand tool, Text tool, and so on if you want to experiment with them.

Krita is another good Microsoft Paint alternative, with a clean and user-friendly interface. Microsoft Paint is the quintessential art creation application that comes pre-installed on Windows PCs. It has been around since Windows 1.0, back in 1985, and is quite easily one of the most widely known (and used) Windows’ applications around. For years, the Paint app had the basic functionality expected of a simple, easy to use application. However, with the Windows 10 Creators Update, Microsoft pushed a “Paint 3D” application that co-exists with Paint. The new app features support for 3D objects, and a lot more. Unfortunately, macOS doesn’t come with an image creation app (not even a basic one like Paint). So, if you’re looking for Microsoft Paint on Mac, here are 7 Paint alternatives for Mac you can use:
1. Paintbrush
If you’re looking for an app that works exactly the way Paint does on Windows, look no further than Paintbrush. The free app is exactly the same as its Windows’ counterpart, and has all the tools you’d find in the Paint app, right down to the spray can. Just like Microsoft Paint, the interface is incredibly simple, and easy to use. By its very design (and similarity to Microsoft Paint), the app is not really suitable for creating high quality art on your computer, however, for most simple image creation tasks, the app will work perfectly fine.
When you launch the app, you can choose the dimensions of the image you want to create; there are presets for various sizes, or you can go with a custom size. For a free app, Paintbrush is amazing. It offers all the basic tools you’d expect from a Microsoft Paint alternative, and can save files into most widely used formats, including JPEG, PNG, BMP, and more. The only bad thing about this app, is that the toolbar is a separate floating window, and there is no option to use the app in a “single window mode”. Staying true to the macOS philosophy, Paintbrush supports tabs, so you can create multiple drawings, without having to launch separate instances of the app.

2. Mischief
Mischief is another cool Paint alternative that you can use on your Mac. The app comes with a very basic set of tools, but can be used to create some really great artwork, thanks to the configurability offered with each tool. Similar to MS Paint, Mischief offers the basic pen, eraser, and shape tools, but does not borrow much else from its Windows’ counterpart. The tools offer some configurability, and you can edit the brush size, and the opacity value for every brush offered by the app.
The app is available in both free, and paid flavors, however, the free version does not support layers, which is an essential feature for any serious art work. You can download a free trial of the full version of the app from their website, and try it free for 15 days, before deciding on whether you really need the extra features or not. Overall, the app is a good alternative to Paint, and is very similar to what Microsoft offers with Paint on Windows.

3. Paint X Lite
Another app that you can use as an alternative to Paint, Paint X Lite comes with a lot of the features you would find in the Paint app, along with a some extra features that can come in really handy. Paint X Lite comes with tools like the pencil, color picker, fill bucket, and even a text tool. It even has the spray can tool, just like Microsoft Paint. Plus, with the huge amount of brush options the app comes with, you can easily create a lot of great looking digital art. Paint X Lite even comes with a huge number of shapes that will definitely make it easier to create shapes like stars, polygons, and a lot more. It also comes with selection tools that you can easily use.
The app itself is available in both a free, and a paid flavor. I chose to go with the free option, to test it out, and it works really fine. The only problem with the free version of Mischief, is that it puts a watermark over your image, saying “Created by Paint X“. Otherwise, the app is a perfectly good option to be used as a Microsoft Paint alternative on Mac.

4. Paint 2
Another MS Paint alternative for Mac is Paint 2. The app has tools similar to what Paint offers (including a spray can-like airbrush tool), and is equally easy to use. The app combines the features of its Windows’ counterpart, with useful features such as layers. However, there is no option to explicitly create new layers in the app; every time you create new object on the canvas, it is automatically added to a new layer. You can freely move the layers up and down, or add multiple layers to the same group, for easy manipulation.
While Paint only has a limited type of selection tools available, Paint 2 has the magic selection tool as well, which is definitely a useful addition. The app is available for free, but you can upgrade to the full version with an in-app purchase, which will add a couple of other useful features to the app, including colour adjustment. However, the app does have quite a lot of great features even in the free version, including things like alignment and distribution settings for various objects on the canvas. Paint 2 also supports tabs, so you can easily work on multiple images without having to open separate instances of the app to do so.

5. Acorn
If you’re looking for an app that is simple to use, just like Paint, but with quite a bit of added functionality, look no further than Acorn. The app comes with an interface highly reminiscent of Microsoft Paint, and with all the tools that Paint included, along with a couple others. Where Acorn really shows its true power is in the amount of editing options it offers. You can create multiple layers in Acorn, and perform a plethora of edits on each and every layer of the image.
You can perform colour correction, add blur, perform colour adjustment, add gradients, stylize, sharpen, and do a lot more. These options can seem a little overwhelming, if you don’t know what they do, but playing around with them can quickly help you improve the editing you perform on your artwork. You can even add a number of distortions to your image, which can really add depth to whatever you’re working on. Acorn is a paid app, but you can download a free trial from their website.

6. Pixelmator
Pixelmator is basically a supercharged version of Paint. The app has all the bells and whistles of Microsoft’s offering, along with a number of advanced tools. If you’re into serious art work on your Mac, Pixelmator is the way to go. It is a beautifully designed app, and can perform a plethora of functions that will definitely make you fall in love with the app. The app comes with all the tools available in Paint, such as the brush tool, pencil, and a number of selection tools. However, Pixelmator also brings a number of other, useful tools. Tools like the sponge tool, warp tool, blur and sharpen tools, along with a pen, and a freeform pen tool. There are a lot of other tools, as well, and one that I really like is the slice tool. With the slice tool, you can create slices of your image, and export them as separate images.
Pixelmator also brings a number of great effects that you can apply to your image, to adjust the look of your artwork exactly the way you want. Thanks to the layer support in the app, you can freely create complex artworks in a manageable, and extensible manner. Pixelmator is a paid app, but is worth the price, and if you’re going to use your Mac for serious digital art creation, you should definitely check out Pixelmator.

7. GIMP
GIMP is a freely available, open source app that can serve as a nice alternative to Paint. The app is very powerful, and is more of a Photoshop alternative, than a Paint alternative, but due to its ease of use, and the fact that it’s freely available, it is a viable alternative for Paint on Mac. The app comes with a number of advanced features, along with all the basic tools available in MS Paint. With GIMP, you can utilize the full power of all the tools, filters, effects, and customizable brushes of the app. You can adjust things like the pressure of the brush, its hardness, and more. You can even add a weight to the brush, to get a smooth stroke, when you need to draw smooth curves, and avoid jitters. You can add effects such as gaussian blurs, colour adjustment, colour correction, and a lot more.
The app also supports layers, and you can even use layers to create animated GIFs, if you want to. However, the process of creating GIFs on GIMP is rather time consuming. There is a plethora of customization options available for every single brush in the app, so you can get the exact effect that you want in your artwork. GIMP is a very powerful app, and if all you’re looking for is a simple app, that behaves exactly like Paint, and doesn’t do much else, GIMP isn’t for you.
