Word one word per line

Nathan’s answer using table-caption is almost correct but misses out a key issue in that the sentence is only actually split by the longest word resulting in grouping of shorter words.

For example the following sentence:

This trick groups and splits words in a sentence based on the longest word.

actually result in the following output. Note the grouping on in a and on the in the output.

This
trick
groups
and
splits
words
in a
sentence
based
on the
longest
word.

You can actually do it very easily by setting the word-spacing which has excellent support.

Using that you can output the sentence correctly as follows:

This
trick
groups
and
splits
words
in
a
sentence
based
on
the
longest
word.

Here’s a working code example you can run.

Snippet

p {
  word-spacing: 9999rem;
}
p ~ p {
  /* Undo last assignment */
  word-spacing: unset;
  display: table-caption;
}

I downloaded a dictionary. The words are one per line so
the line breaks are after each word, (I assume?). It is a
long list. I’m trying to print it and save paper, but I
can’t seem to get the words to wrap and I can’t go through
and delete the breaks after every word. All I’ve gotten
so far is columns, but I think I could save twice the
space if I had only a single space between each word on a
line rather than columns.

Also, I could save a lot more space by deleting the 2-4
letter words because I have them in separate files. This
probably seems an impossible task to search for and find
all these those.

Thank you for any help,

Have you tried using Table -> Convert -> Text to table?
Specifying 4 columns (or more if possible) should squeeze
things up nicely.

Alternately, you could do a wildcard search, using ^p in
the «Find What» box, replacing with » » (that’s a
couple spaces; you wouldn’t actually type the quotes).
That would replace any linebreak with a few spaces.

If you really wanted to delete 2-4 letter words, another
wildcard search, with [! ]{2,4} in the Find What box,
replaced with nothing would do the trick (notice the space
after the exclamantion mark and before the bracket, and
that those are braces around the 2 and 4)

You could replace ^p with a space.

You must have learned how to adjust character spacing in our previous post, but when you are editing a document with exact specifications, it is necessary to limit the characters per line and lines per page as well. On the other hand, it can also limit the characters for the whole document. Just follow the steps below and let’s find out how to achieve it.

First, go to Layout tab, click the arrow at the right bottom in Page Setup group.

How to Limit the Characters Per Line in Microsoft Word

A Page Setup dialog box will display, go to Document Grid tab, and check the box of Specify line and character grid. You could specify the value under Characters to limit the characters per line and modify the value under Lines to limit the lines per page. Also, you are able to set it applies to Whole document or This point forward by selecting option in the drop-down box. Simply click OK and you are done.

This isn’t really what I would call sorting.

You could either squeeze and transliterate all non-alphabetic sequences into newlines

tr -sc '[:alpha:]' '[n*]' < PDF

or (at least with GNU grep) match and output sequences of word characters (alpha, decimal digits and underscore), one per line using the -o option

grep -o 'w*' PDF
