From Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (OALD), 8 ed.

OALD, 8th ed, pp.V36-V37
Talking about a particular sport

You can play a specific sport:
Do you play tennis?
This is used particularly for competitive sports in which one team or person plays or plays against another:
We played them in last year’s final.
Who are you playing against this afternoon?

Members of a sports team play for their team:
He used to play for the Dallas Cowboys.

If the name of a sport or an activity ends in -ing we often use it with the verb to go:
I go swimming twice a week.
Have you ever been rock climbing?

Typical sports and activities with this pattern include: go skiing; go sailing; go riding(BrE) or go horseback riding (NAmE); and go dancing.
Check at the entry for each sport to see if it can be used in this way.

Other sports and activities can take the verbs to do or to go to:
I do aerobics once or twice a week.
I go to judo (=to my judo class) on Mondays.

p. V37 Where sports are played
(здесь не дословно, а выжимка)
a cricket/football/rugby/hockey pitch (BrE)
a soccer/baseball field (esp. NAmE)
a tennis/badminton/squash/basketball court

stadium; plural stadiums/stadia
collocation: an all-seater stadium

GRAMMAR POINT
Names of American sports teams always start with «the»; names of British sports teams almost never do. Names of sports teams may look either singular or plural but always take a plural verb:
The Jazz are playing the Chicago Bulls.
Aston Villa have started the season well.

Teams are often referred to just by the name of the place they come from. In AmE this means a singular verb is used, but in BrE the verb is still plural.
Cincinnati is having a great season.
Norwich were disappointed with the score.

Extreme sports are popular all over the UK. Not just in the mountains of Snowdonia or Scotland. But what attracts people to these sports? Is it adventure or danger?

People who enjoy fast and dangerous sports, like white-water rafting, are called thrill seekers or adrenalin junkies.

I’m at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham in the centre of England and this is the white-water course. Seven hundred metres of foaming water with drops or rapids. And the skill is to stay afloat in the rough water.

I’m here to meet Pas Blackwell, a white-water rafting expert, and to find out why so many people enjoy the thrills and spills of this extreme sport.

Carmen: Hi, Pas.

Pas: Hi, Carmen.

Carmen: So this is a specially built course, but you raft on rapids all around the world. What do you most enjoy about white-water rafting?

Pas: I really enjoy being outdoors and on the water. I really enjoy the freedom of just you and nature and I really enjoy the challenge.

Carmen: So why do people like dangerous sports?

Pas: I think people like to push themselves  to see how far they can go – to really test themselves, against the elements, water and air.

Carmen: So, are you an adrenaline junkie?

Pas: I don’t think of myself as an adrenaline junkie, but I do really enjoy the rush of trying to get from the top to the bottom and get through situations that occur out on the river.

…..

In the countryside there are lots of wide open spaces and lots of extreme sports to choose from. But what do adrenalin junkies do in the city? Well, parkour, sometimes called free running, is becoming popular in London.

Parkour started in France. And the idea is to get from one place to the other as fast as possible; jumping and climbing over whatever is in the way. So I’ve come to a parkour class in West London to find out what it’s all about. Rebecca Ahmed has been doing parkour for more than a year.

Carmen: So Rebecca, why do you like parkour?

Rebecca: It’s really fun, it’s original and it keeps me fit. That’s why I come.

Carmen: Do you need any special equipment?

Rebecca: Not really, we just use what’s around us like steps, railings and trees, but as long as you’ve got a good pair of trainers, you’re fine.
Carmen: Is it difficult?
Rebecca: I wouldn’t say it’s difficult – it’s more about the fear. If you’re not scared you can do it.

I’m not sure I’ve got the balance for parkour. Extreme sports can be dangerous, but they’re also lots of fun.

A CURLEY CORNERSTONE: Coach Dan Popera

A CURLEY CORNERSTONE: Coach Dan Popera

Tragically and suddenly on March 5, 2023, the brotherhood of Archbishop Curley High School lost a legend, Coach Dan Popera. Dan had an insatiable passion for sports, was a HUGE Ravens fan and just an all-around terrific guy. He is survived by his wife Kate and daughters Beth and Karen – an awesome family, a host of great friends and of course, hundreds of students upon which he left an indelible mark.

Joining me to discuss this Curley Hall of Famer and Hall of Fame man in this special edition of Word on the Street, are three of Archbishop Curley’s finest, all of whom played for Coach Popera at Curley: Bob Dillon, Bob Jones and Mario Scilipoti.

We reminisce about Dan’s prowess, intensity and passion that he displayed as a teacher, a coach and perhaps most importantly as a man who loved his family, friends, players and students. It is with great pride that we present some of our memories of a man who we will all sorely miss.

Paul’s Payoff Pitch Farewell
Jul 16, 2020

Anthony Santander has finally joined the Orioles (it was revealed that he had tested positive for Covid19), but Dwight Smith Jr. is still nowhere to be found. Richie Martin suffered an injury requiring surgery and will be out for a few months. In the finale of The Payoff Pitch, Paul runs down those stories and more as we are now just over a week from our delayed MLB Opening Day.

Show Me the Baseball!
Jul 09, 2020

In this week’s episode of The Payoff Pitch, Paul goes over the Orioles’ truncated 60-game schedule, wonders why a couple Orioles haven’t been seen on the field yet, and tears into the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network for their refusal to show us any O’s intrasquad or other summer camp action.

Baseball is…Back?!
Jun 25, 2020

Two weeks, two installments of The Payoff Pitch! It seems Major League Baseball and the Players Union got their heads out of their own posteriors long enough to reach an agreement on a 60-game season to be played in 66 days beginning July 23/24. And while excitement for the first live American team sports since March abounds, the future of the game of baseball, with a new Collective Bargaining Agreement on the horizon, is cloudier than ever. I delve into the details of the new season, while also looking at the gloom-and-doom that will inevitably be the 2021/22 offseason. Plus, a look at some Hall of Famers that are, and some that never were. Why is Derek Jeter treated like Babe Ruth when he’s nothing more than Paul Molitor? Just hit play and find out on The Payoff Pitch.

Apr 22, 2016

Duping The Draft Media
Apr 18, 2016

NFL Insiders are assuming that the Browns are going with whichever quarterback remains after the Rams pick. But maybe they’ve duped the media into thinking that so they could snag the best defensive player.

Buck is Still the Best, but Nobody’s Perfect
Apr 17, 2016

Buck Showalter is one of the best — if not the best — at managing his bullpen. On Saturday night though, he got it wrong against the Rangers.

O’s Have Warts, but so Does Rest of A.L. East

The Baltimore Orioles have some warts, especially in their starting rotation, but so do the rest of the clubs in the division.

Late Round QB Draft Picks Are Wasteful

The Heat Is On The Ravens
Apr 07, 2016

Traditionally the Ravens pre-draft luncheon has been a rather light-hearted event, chockfull of lies, truths and half-truths all intended to create deceit. But the presser on April 5 wasn’t quite so light-hearted. The Ravens personnel group is a bit like the home run hitter who can’t find his long ball stroke.

The Draft Is More Like Art Than Science
Apr 06, 2016

Ozzie & Company may shift their “best player available” metrics a bit to take into account the changes in the game, particularly the passing game. Analysts try to make the draft a science but in the end it may be more like art.

Please Not Ronnie Stanley
Apr 06, 2016

Mock drafts are raging across the interwebs and the one pick for the Ravens that makes me wince is that of Ronnie Stanley. Stanley looks to be a solid pro but at No. 6 in the draft, I want more than solid. I want special and Stanley doesn’t fit that description.

Count on Ozzie Making More Moves
Apr 06, 2016

There’s a reason Ozzie Newsome altered a couple of contracts and still has $6.7M in cap space. He didn’t restructure Marshal Yanda and Jimmy Smith without purpose.

More additions are coming.

Whitner or Webb Next to Weddle?
Apr 06, 2016

NFL’s New Touchback Rule is a Joke!
Mar 23, 2016

Eugene Monroe Needs to Get His Priorities in Order
Mar 16, 2016

If Eugene Monroe was as concerned about playing left tackle as he is about medicinal marijuana in the NFL the Ravens would be a better team.

Eugene Monroe and Pot
Mar 15, 2016

If only Eugene Monroe played with the passion his bringing to his fight for medicinal marijuana in the NFL, the Ravens would be happier with their enigmatic left tackle.

Browns Quarterbacks
Mar 15, 2016

Marijuana Times in The NFL
Mar 10, 2016

Pain management in the NFL is a major problem. Many players turn to marijuana to help them cope yet the drug is banned…AND it’s illegal in most States, yet FAR less dangerous and less addictive than painkillers that ARE approved by the league.

Ravens Sign Watson
Mar 10, 2016

When the words «The Ravens Sign Ben Watson» hit social media, most fans greeted the news with sighs or yawns but make no mistake about it, the Watson signing makes sense! Here’s why…

Like Christmas Morning In The NFL
Mar 09, 2016

For some NFL fans, today is like Christmas morning. When the clock strikes 4 today, big free agent signings will be officially announced. Unfortunately Ravens fans will feel like stepchildren and forced to pretend to be excited about Ozzie Newsome signing a 35-year old tight end in the form of Ben Watson.

Pacman to Baltimore DOA
Mar 08, 2016

It’s time for Joe Flacco to play to his level of pay.

QB Pay Scale
Mar 04, 2016

Joe Flacco is now the highest paid quarterback in the NFL based on the yearly average of his contract. It is a reflection of how quickly quarterback salaries are rising. Paul Pabst from The Dan Patrick Show has an interesting idea for paying quarterbacks going forward.

Go Bold
Mar 01, 2016

The Ravens need to be bold this offseason if they hope to capture the AFC North title in 2016. Ravens Ring of Honor Has Issues

Webb Will be an Expensive Safety
Feb 23, 2016

Time will tell if the move of Lardarius Webb to safety will work, assuming he isn’t a cap casualty. Webb has the range and ball skills to play center field but is he big enough to deliver and absorb the blows that go with the position? More importantly is he worth the money?

Pot In The NFL

The NFL substance abuse policy is a joke and although no one asked me, that’s by design.

No Pitta Party For Ravens
Feb 22, 2016

We keep hearing how Dennis Pitta wants to try and play again despite the inherent risks of such a comeback. Give the Ravens credit for publicly respecting the desires of a fan and organizational favorite, but soon, push will come to shove and the Ravens will part ways with Joe Flacco’s BFF.

Speed Kills in The NFL
Feb 10, 2016

No matter the sport, speed kills. And speed was on display during Super Bowl 50.

You’ve heard it said many times that the NFL is a copy cat league and as such, speed rushers across the continent should pay homage to Von Miller. Miller’s explosiveness off the edge altered the most important games during the 2015 season.

Winning Ugly is a Beautiful Think

Cam’s Pity Party
Feb 08, 2016

The Denver Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers 24-10, courtesy of a dominant defensive performance and a ferocious pass rush.

Yet most of the talk the morning after Super Bowl 50 is centered upon the loser’s locker room thanks to Cam Newton’s 2-minute child-like pouting presser.

Ravens Should Borrow a Page From Broncos’ Script
Feb 05, 2016

The Broncos success in 2015 is rooted in good defense and establishing the run, something the Ravens could learn and borrow from.

Cam The Ham
Feb 04, 2016

Cam Newton is a terrific athlete, involved in his community and should be the NFL MVP. Yet there’s a lot of hate aimed his way. It’s a generational thing.

Elway to Marino: I Can See Clearly Now
Feb 03, 2016

For years Baltimore fans have despised John Elway. But ESPN’s «Elway to Marino» sheds new light on the 1983 NFL Draft that should at least in part exonerate the Broncos legend.

As talented as Justin Tucker is in life and on the football field, could you imagine him playing another position? Like say defensive tackle?

Bosa
Jan 27, 2016

In 2003 some had Terrell Suggs as the No. 1 pick but a slow 40-time sent him down draft boards. Could the Ravens benefit from a similar slide by Joey Bosa?

Goodell Screws St. Louis
Jan 27, 2016

There was a time when the owners had empathy for communities and moving a franchise was akin to a Catholic cursing the Pope.

Not any more!

Today if it adds to the league’s bottom line, Roger Goodell will do it without remorse. No holds barred.

There are two words that tell the story of why I can never root for the Denver Broncos: John Elway.

Should We Still Trust in Ozzie?
Jan 13, 2016

The Baltimore Ravens struggled in 2015 and part of the problem has been the lack of playmakers that the team has produced in the NFL Draft during recent years. Should we continue to have blind faith in Ozzie Newsome?

For the Ravens and their fans is it still, «In Ozzie We Trust»?

Patience
Jan 06, 2016

Eric DeCosta will undoubtedly be an NFL GM one day. If he’s patient that job will be in Baltimore.

But how long will his patience last?

Almost like clockwork, every January DeCosta’s name is bantered about as a GM candidate for a team or three. This year his name has been most often pegged to the Tennessee Titans. That’s unlikely to wear his patience thin.

But I here’s what might…

KO
Dec 24, 2015

The Ravens have never done a good job of re-signing players they like before they hit the open market. Once they get to market they are usually gone, save Monroe, much to the dismay of many. Will Kelechi Osemele be the next?

Accountability
Dec 22, 2015

Has the John Harbaugh doghouse made a comeback?

Keep Matt Schaub
Dec 17, 2015

We all know who and what Matt Schaub is. We don’t know if he’ll return in 2016 and the Ravens do have two other potential backups to Joe Flacco next season in the forms of Jimmy Clausen and newly signed Ryan Mallett. So why play him anymore in 2015?

Mow The Lawn

Ravens Heads Are Gonna Roll
Dec 14, 2015

The Ravens losing ways demand accountability and yet Ozzie Newsome remains in the background, allowing his head coach to take all of the heat. Newsome’s “hall pass” has expired. The teams gaping holes and obvious weaknesses go beyond the injuries and there will be consequences.

Some heads are gonna roll.

Ravens Missing Locker Room Leadership
Nov 04, 2015

Ray Lewis’ speech prior to the Ravens game against the San Diego Chargers was a sobering reminder of the scarcity of leadership in the team’s locker room.

Is Ozzie Newsome Is In a Slump?
Oct 26, 2015

One of Ozzie Newsome’s precious credos on draft day has always been, “best player available”. His argument has always been that even if you draft a player that isn’t a need position, some day that position WILL become a need. The classic example is their 2001 first round pick Todd Heap who was selected despite the presence of Shannon Sharpe.

The approach certainly has merit. Take the best player on the board.

But is there fault in the logic?

Oh and by the way the Ravens bargain basement free agent signings as of late…

Duds!

Press Play below for more…

What Happened to The Baltimore Ravens?
Oct 24, 2015

Enter the 2015 Baltimore Ravens, a team I no longer recognize.

Time For Ravens To Turn Their Attention To 2016
Oct 14, 2015

After a (1-4) start and with no end to the team’s bleeding in sight the Baltimore Ravens should manage the balance of the 2015 season in a way that allows them to take a long look at young players who may or may not contribute in 2016.

Bold Predictions Ravens Browns
Oct 11, 2015

Some bold predictions for the Ravens v. Browns on October 11, 2015.

The Ravens Failed Project
Oct 09, 2015

During the 2010 NFL Draft the Ravens had an opportunity to address a long-time team need. Instead they ignored one player in favor of a failed project.

Dazzle In Distress
Oct 07, 2015

The NFL seeks to continually refine its product to enhance the fan experience. But the ongoing tinkering of the rules, which essentially pushes the NFL game closer and closer to that of Arena Football, has a counterproductive effect on the league’s alleged desire to make the game better for the fans.

Can The Ravens Afford To Add Another Receiver?
Oct 07, 2015

Clearly the Ravens need another wide receiver but given their current cap position can they afford a player like Alshon Jeffrey if he was available?

When it comes to the subject of injury reports, gambling, Fan Duel and Draft Kings the NFL and Roger Goodell once again prove they are hypocrites.

If Harbaugh Is Selling I’m Buying
Oct 04, 2015

I believe in the cliché, one for all and all for one. I buy into the adage that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. And I will swear by the concept of “Team First”.

Therefore it should be no surprise that I’m a big John Harbaugh fan.

Prediction Time: Ravens v. Steelers Part I 2015
Oct 01, 2015

This week the Ravens travel to Pittsburgh to take on their archrival Steelers. Before the severity of Ben Roethlisberger’s injury was known the Ravens were 3 ½ point underdogs tonight against Mike Tomlin’s (2-1) squad. With Michael Vick behind center the Ravens are now 2 ½ point road favorites. How will this one play out?

Ravens «Tipping Pitches»?

The Baltimore Ravens have the same personnel, same blocking scheme and the same offensive line coach but they are not producing in 2015 the way they did in 2014.

Blame Flacco
Sep 29, 2015

It’s funny when fans and the media pile on Joe Flacco and blame him for nearly every Ravens loss. When will the Ravens give this guy a few weapons? Could any other quarterback get it done with the collection of talent surrounding Flacco?

Prediction Time: Ravens Vs Bengals
Sep 26, 2015

The Ravens face and early season must win after dropping to (0-2). Look for them to rebound and get the win versus the Bengals in Week 3.

Finding Playmakers
Sep 25, 2015

The Baltimore Ravens are a team that remains in the postseason mix each year through skillful evaluations of collegiate talent and through a thoughtful approach to free agency that is fiscally responsible. The trouble with the approach is that it doesn’t produce many dynamic playmakers.

Enjoy The Ride
Sep 24, 2015

Spoiled by the Ravens’ regular appearances and wins in the postseason, many Baltimore fans have already thrown in the towel on the 2015 season after an (0-2) start. Some have called for the head of Dean Pees while others have declared that John Harbaugh will now be exposed as a fraud.

Coach Like A Raven
Sep 23, 2015

There’s not another head coach in the NFL that I would want for the Baltimore Ravens more than John Harbaugh. But like you, sometimes the decisions he makes or doesn’t make can be infuriating.

Ravens Raiders Prediction
Sep 20, 2015

The Baltimore Ravens travel to Oakland to take on the Raiders as visiting 6 1/2 point favorites. «How will the game play out?». you ask. Just sit right back and listen up to these bold predictions!

53
Sep 19, 2015

Why is it that NFL teams have to pay 53 guys but they can’t dress 53 guys on Sunday? Whose idea was that? Think about that for a second!

You own a business and you have 53 employees and on the most important work day of the week, seven of them are told they can hang out and not do anything PLUS get their full pay check.

This practice of the NFL doesn’t reward teams who have developed the best 53-man rosters. It doesn’t reward their ability to scout, teach and manage the salary cap. In fact it penalizes them.

Sep 19, 2015

Many will say that labeling the second game of the season as a «must win» is premature. History tells a different story.

The Fall Guy
Aug 25, 2015

“If you all got a crew, you got to have a fall guy in the crew,” Cris Carter said during the 2014 NFL Rookie Symposium. “If you all have a crew, one of those fools got to know, he’s the one going to jail. We’ll get him out.”

Carter’s comments were wrong on many levels. Here he is, a NFL Hall of Famer wearing his proud blazer, a symbol of his induction, essentially handing out a blue print for rookies looking to dodge criminal behavior.

The Rip Off Called «The NFL Preseason»
Aug 25, 2015

With more teams holding joint practice sessions laced with the competitive fire of preseason games, preseason games are now arguably obsolete.

But that won’t stop the NFL from playing them at the expense of league-wide safety and the fans that continue to shell out regular season money for these glorified practices.

The league will hold you, the fan, hostage.

Best Of Ravens Training Camp 2015
Aug 13, 2015

Through the Baltimore Ravens training camp and leading up to their first 2015 preseason game a few players have stood out. Here’s a look at the best player, the biggest surprise and the best rookie so far this summer.

Let The Fake Games Begin
Aug 13, 2015

It’s been said that training camp is an opportunity for all 32 NFL teams to improve depth by building their rosters from the bottom up – to mine for hidden gems among the world’s best 2,880 players that currently comprise NFL rosters prior to the first cut down date of September 1. Just four days later that total will drop over 41% to 1,696 players.

Preseason football, fake games to many but real important to the future of many NFL careers.

Finish Line
Aug 11, 2015

Steve Smith, Sr. has announced that he will retire after the 2015 season and he said that in doing so it establishes a finish line much like the one Ray Lewis set back in 2012. The Ravens hope that the careers of these two NFL greats have a similar conclusion…a Super Bowl Championship.

Joe Flacco Looking Better Than Ever
Aug 09, 2015

In 2015 Joe Flacco is working with his fourth offensive coordinator in as many years yet the transition to Marc Trestman seems to be working just fine. Insiders say that the QB and coordinator have a very good relationship. Flacco has never looked more comfortable and seems to be effortlessly advancing through his progressions during “live” scrimmaging.

And that could spell trouble for the rest of the AFC.

Signing Schaub Was a Good Idea
Aug 09, 2015

Signing Matt Schaub to be Joe Flacco’s backup was a solid move by Ozzie Newsome but so far he has struggled during training camp and if things don’t improve and Flacco misses time, the Baltimore Ravens are unlikely to play a 17th game during the 2015 season.

Is Harbaugh’s Tenure Nearing Its End?
Aug 07, 2015

When Brian Billick was the Ravens head coach he maintained that after 7 seasons or so a coach’s message gets lost – that the message, the coach’s philosophy, doesn’t move men in year 7 like it did in the early years.

Eventually Billick’s belief became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Does the same fate await John Harbaugh?

Seeing Red
Aug 05, 2015

When Joe Flacco and John Harbaugh arrived in 2008, the Ravens decided to use red jerseys to help protect the quarterbacks.

In 2014 the fashionistas at the Castle were influenced by the black and red jerseys worn by the 49ers QBs and the Ravens changed theirs to black and purple.

Now the colors don’t stick out all that much from purple in the heat of the moment during practice. The alternate jersey does nothing to protect the quarterback and if something does happen to one, particularly Joe Flacco, the Ravens, the coaches and the fans will all being seeing red.

Ravens Bolster Secondary
Jul 31, 2015

The Ravens bolstered their secondary with the additions of safety Kendrick Lewis and Kyle Arrington. Lewis looks like he will be a solid complement to Will Hill while Arrington is arguably one of the best free agent acquisitions this offseason.

Aiken, Butler Represent Value For Ravens
Jul 31, 2015

The Baltimore Ravens may have a couple of economical choices who deliver value at the position of wide receiver in 2015. Kamar Aiken has practiced like a poor man’s Anquan Boldin while Jeremy Butler is shaping into an eBay version of Reggie Wayne.

Zuttah Needs to Get Better
Jul 31, 2015

Although he was a clear upgrade in 2014 over the disastrous play at center for the Baltimore Ravens during the 2013 season, Jeremy Zuttah needs to step up his game in 2015. If he doesn’t, waiting in the wings is the developing John Urschel.

Along the defensive line look for Brent Urban to press Chris Canty for playing time.

Brady’s Lying Eyes Could Benefit The Ravens
Jul 30, 2015

Despite all of the legal posturing Tom Brady will probably be behind center on Opening Night of the 2015 NFL Season and that could be a blessing in disguise for the Ravens. A Steelers loss on Opening Night certainly benefits the Baltimore Ravens.

20 20 Vision
Jul 30, 2015

Unless you have a trained eye it is difficult at times to decipher who on the practice field is deserving of a spot on the Baltimore Ravens 53-man roster or is simply a practice hero. It’s up to the team’s coaches to make that final determination.

Why The Ravens Could Represent AFC in Super Bowl 50
Jun 27, 2015

There is no apparent dominant team in the AFC for the moment and each of the contenders has flaws. Arguably the most balanced of the contenders is the Baltimore Ravens who could make a serious push to make their 3rd Super Bowl appearance in just the franchise’s 20th season.

Ravens to Hire a Butler?
Jun 25, 2015

Jeremy Butler had an impressive camp in 2014 and so far through OTA’s and minicamp in 2015 he’s taken it up a notch further, so much so that teammates Joe Flacco and Steve Smith, Sr. have publicly praised the former Tennessee-Martin Skyhawk!

No Sizzle, No Ice?
Jun 25, 2015

Between them they have 11 Pro Bowls to their credit, a Comeback Player of the Year, Defensive Rookie of the Year, Defensive MVP and a Super Bowl ring. Might retirement and a trip to Canton be next for Terrell Suggs and Steve Smith, Sr.?

The Next General is Unnecessary
Jun 24, 2015

Ravens fans and even many in the media often wonder aloud about the role of team leader made vacant by the retirement of Ray Lewis. And while we miss the quintessential leader is such leadership necessary for success?

No More Drama
Jun 22, 2015

What might the players do with their free time over the next 5 weeks? Young players with means exploring the inviting playgrounds of summer.

Some may slip and place their jobs in jeopardy and we’ll criticize them for potentially ruining a chance of a lifetime.

Yet who are we to judge?

Let’s Koch!
Jun 12, 2015

It seemed a forgone conclusion that the Ravens would extend Koch and lower his $3.1M cap figure, the 8th highest in the league and nearly double Justin Forsett’s ($1.6M).

But apparently the Ravens are comfortable with the number and willing to address the punter position at the conclusion of the 2015 season. And here’s why…

Will Brown’s Added Weight Equate to Added Playing Time?
Jun 11, 2015

This season Brown has reported to OTA’s noticeably thicker, presumably to help him to be more stout at the point of attack. It remains to be seen if that will inhibit his speed and quickness, particularly in coverage. More here…

Which Guard?
Jun 10, 2015

Both of the Baltimore Ravens starting offensive guards will become unrestricted free agents following the 2015 season. It is unlikely that the team will be able to afford both. With that in mind, what’s the game plan for 2016? (Photo Credit: Baltimore Sun)

Monroe Falling Short of Expectations?
Jun 09, 2015

Ravens offensive tackle Eugene Monroe fought through some nagging injuries in 2014 and missed a total of six games including the Wild Card contest in Pittsburgh. He was the 63rd ranked offensive tackle in 2014 according to Pro Football Focus.

Unfortunately for the Ravens he’s the 13th highest paid offensive tackle according to OverTheCap.com. Might his job be in jeopardy?

Ravens QB’s No Longer Seeing Red
Jun 06, 2015

During the Billick years Ravens quarterbacks didn’t practice in red. That changed under Harbaugh. But now it has changed again and it may trigger problems.

We Are Marshal (Yanda)
Jun 03, 2015

The Ravens have engaged in contract extension talks with Marshal Yanda yet there’s nothing to report at the moment. Yanda defines what it means to Play Like a Raven and is still at the top of his game. The Ravens want to keep the perennial Pro Bowler but it will come at an expense and likely cost the team another developing player.

Who Will be The Ravens No. 3 Wide Receiver
Jun 02, 2015

There is little doubt that the Ravens top 2 wide receivers in 2015 will be Steve Smith, Sr. and Breshad Perriman. Beyond that which player will be No. 3? The answer is not cut and dried…

Tucker
Jun 01, 2015

Justin Tucker will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2015 season. But even if the Ravens fail to sign him to a new deal he will still be in Baltimore in 2016. Here’s why…

Safety in Numbers
Jun 01, 2015

The 2015 season could be a make or break campaign for safety Matt Elam, the team’s 2013 first round pick. He’ll be competing for playing time with Will Hill.

Campanaro
Jun 01, 2015

Promising wide receiver Michael Campanaro was once viewed by the Baltimore Ravens as their answer to Julian Edelman. However the team is now concerned that Campanaro’s injuries could become chronic and with competition heating up for limited wide receiver spots on the team those nagging injuries could put the former Demon Deacon on the outside looking in.

Drafting Wide Receivers
May 14, 2015

The Baltimore Ravens have long been criticized for their inability to identify and develop collegiate talent at the position of wide receiver. But is that a fair criticism?

Jarret Johnson Retires as a Raven
May 14, 2015

Jarret Johnson is your quintessential Baltimore Raven. We salute his career in purple and black.

Ravens Reload
May 09, 2015

Every offseason the Baltimore Ravens say goodbye to a productive defender or two. Yet each offseason Ozzie Newsome seems to find a more affordable way to replace the lost productivity.

Leaky Ravens Secondary
May 08, 2015

The Ravens made few additions to their secondary yet with a return to «healthy» status the team’s defensive backfield has the potential to be among the league’s best.

Reed or Polamalu?
Apr 15, 2015

Troy Polamalu’s retirement announcement sparked a debate that has lingered for years. Which safety is better, Ed Reed or Troy Polamalu?

No Crab In Baltimore
Apr 08, 2015

The Baltimore Ravens continue to seek out a veteran wide receiver who might complement their current stable of receivers. And while his name is a fit for Charm City, Michael Crabtree’s skill set isn’t.

The Ravens Can’t Hide Their Lyin Eyes
Apr 06, 2015

This week the Ravens will host their Pre-Draft Luncheon to discuss various draft-eligible players and the team’s draft strategy. And if you believe that let me tell you about this oceanfront property in Nebraska.

In this world of social media and the warp speed in which news travels, expect the Ravens to put such tools to use as part of an effort to be deceptive and feed the world an industrial-sized fishing net’s worth of red herrings.

Operation Second Chance ~ NPLB (No Person Left Behind)
Apr 04, 2015

Russell Street Report supports Operation 2nd Chance/NPLB and its first annual golf tournament spearheaded Skip Tolley.

This will be a day to remember – one filled with fun and laughter while paying homage to those who help make such fun and laughter possible. The Armed Forces, particularly those injured while serving. It’s a win, win. And in the big scheme of things, it’s a very small token of appreciation.

Tampering Overtures Aimed at Ravens’ Bisciotti Are Ridiculous!
Apr 03, 2015

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti offers full disclosure during a one-hour conference call with PSL Owners and the media sours it with tampering insinuations stemming from comments about Haloti Ngata.

The Ravens’ Bill Buckner?
Apr 02, 2015

Lee Evans was a smooth route runner with top end speed and produced as a member of the Buffalo Bills. But when he was traded to Baltimore his career suddenly hit a wall. We are still left to wonder why.

Huddling With Harbaugh
Apr 02, 2015

The Baltimore Ravens entire offensive line improved dramatically in 2014 and that is a testament to the unit’s pride, hard work, intelligence and coaching. In 2015 the team hopes to see similar improvement in the defensive secondary.

Clipboard Guy
Apr 02, 2015

Matt Schaub will never replace Ravens QB Joe Flacco as a starter. That’s not his job in 2015. But the fact of the matter is, regardless of how or with whom he got there, Schaub’s career stats compare favorably to Flacco’s.

That’s experience that could help the team.

Second To None
Apr 02, 2015

On Wednesday April 1, 2015, Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti fielded questions from PSL owners, answering honestly, thoroughly and ducked nothing.

If are a Ravens fan and you were listening you know this to be true – Ravens Nations is fortunate and should be proud to have one Stephen J. Bisciotti guiding an NFL organization that from top to bottom is second to none.

A King’s Ransom
Mar 31, 2015

The Falcons with the 27th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft coveted an impact wide receiver and made a trade with the Cleveland Browns for the sixth overall pick. To get that pick Atlanta gave the Browns their 1st, second and fourth-round picks in 2011 and their first- and fourth-round picks in 2012.

Weed In The NFL
Mar 29, 2015

Pain management in the NFL is a way of life. Some players have turned to Vicodin. Perhaps a less hazardous remedy is marijuana.

The Baltimore Ravens: The Early Years
Mar 26, 2015

When Phil Savage looks back upon his days in Baltimore, he remembers the friends he made, the media contacts he still engages and how during those early years he helped to build a franchise that is now a «picture of consistency» in the NFL.

Ozzie Newsome is «The Man»
Mar 26, 2015

Ozzie Newsome, who just the day prior to the 1996 NFL Draft, was elevated to essentially an un-titled position and given the authority to make the final call regarding personnel decisions. Ozzie never wavered. Instead of the splashy pick of Lawrence Philips he chose a Hall of Famer with his first pick and another with his second pick.

Baltimore Really is a Football Town
Mar 26, 2015

Phil Savage discusses the many unknowns confronting the Cleveland Browns when they moved to Baltimore.

On The Road Again
Mar 26, 2015

The Baltimore Ravens will travel to four cities in 2015 that are further from Baltimore than last season furthest destination – those cities being Denver, Phoenix, Oakland and San Francisco and they will nearly double those frequent flier miles when they travel a total of 20,748 miles.

Learn how the team plans to cut out about 5,000 of the miles in the sky.

Trading Up
Mar 26, 2015

Why the Baltimore Ravens are unlikely to trade up in Round 1 of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Pig Farmer Etches His Mark in Ravens History
Mar 23, 2015

Yanda without question is the franchise’s 2nd best offensive lineman in the team’s history. And it’s not even close. The former Iowa Hawkeye and pig farmer is a four-time All-Pro and is a quiet yet very respected leader in the locker room. And he belongs in the discussion as one of the team’s all-time greats.

Zero Tolerance: Does it Exist For Ravens?
Mar 23, 2015

The term “zero tolerance” seems to be applied regularly to the Baltimore Ravens and their approach to dealing with player arrests.

The term stems from the recent releases of players after they’ve had run-ins with the law – namely Terrence Cody, Victor Hampton and Bernard Pierce.

Is it appropriately applied?

NFL Meetings
Mar 21, 2015

Each year the NFL proposes rules changes adding to an already over-officiated game. Can’t they just leave well enough alone?

Terrell Suggs Becomes a Raven
Mar 19, 2015

Prior to Suggs being drafted in 2003, many mock draft analysts had the Arizona State Sun Devil pegged as the No. 1 overall pick after his 2002 season that included a collegiate high 31.5 tackles for loss and an NCAA record 24 sacks.

But during the NFL Combines prior to the 2003 NFL Draft, Suggs’ 40-yard dash time was just south of 5.0. His stock slipped. Here’s the story about how Suggs eventually became a member of the Baltimore Ravens.

Webb Takes One For The Team
Mar 18, 2015

Earlier this week Lardarius Webb was honored as the Ravens Ed Block Courage Award recipient. On the same day he was chastised for an off-hand remark made to a US Armed Forces Veteran. One day later he took a pay cut to help create cap space for his team.

Bye Bye Bernie
Mar 18, 2015

I would imagine at this very moment someone within the Ravens organization is conferring with lawyers and the Player’s Association to make sure they cross all “t’s” and dot all “I’s” regarding the release of Bernard Pierce.

Ravens Caught in a Tangled Webb
Mar 16, 2015

The Ravens have tried their best to extend Lardarius Webb but the two sides can’t seem to reach what each believes is a fair deal. The Ravens likely see an injury prone corner who has declining skills and Webb’s representatives see a sea of green in the free agent market that is flush with cash and is, like Haloti Ngata was, unwilling to compromise.

Taylor Moves Out, Wenning Steps In
Mar 12, 2015

Free agent QB Tyrod Taylor has signed with the Buffalo Bills after 4 seasons as Joe Flacco’s backup in Baltimore.

Ozzie Criticisms Are Common in March
Mar 11, 2015

Like men’s NCAA hoops madness, you can set your calendars by the criticisms directed at Ozzie Newsome. They bloom like Spring flowers. Yes ladies and gentlemen it is March.

Double J
Mar 10, 2015

It’s great to know that Jarret Johnson will sign a 1-day contract to effectively retire as a Baltimore Raven. He epitomizes what it means to Play Like a Raven.

Ravens Land Suggs and Boller in Round 1 03 Draft
Mar 10, 2015

Phil Savage describes the frenetic events that ultimately ended with the Ravens landing Terrell Suggs AND Kyle Boller in round 1.

Suh Blues
Mar 09, 2015

Haloti Ngata isn’t the player that Ndamukong Suh is plus Haloti has 3 years on Suh. But that said, it could be argued that Ngata for the next 3 years could give a team about 70% of Suh’s production and someone could pay him handsomely if the Ravens cut ties with Ngata.

Saying Goodbye to Fan Favorites is Never Easy
Mar 09, 2015

The Baltimore Ravens do well in the draft and consequently many of their players are deserving of higher pay grades. Unfortunately the straw that stirs the drink can also force it to spill. Because of the cap, you can’t keep all of your players and in order to better the team the front office has no choice but to say goodbye to some players.

In the last week the Ravens have been forced to say goodbye to Jacoby Jones and Torrey Smith. Both have provided great memories on the field and in the community. That’s the nature of the beast in the NFL.

WR’s And CB’s At No. 26 in The 2015 NFL Draft
Mar 07, 2015

Former Ravens executive and Browns GM Phil Savage discusses what Wide Receivers and Cornerbacks might be available for Baltimore with the 26th pick in the NFL Draft.

The Changing World of Sports Journalism
Mar 06, 2015

With the advent of social media and with the ease of setting up one’s own blog, journalism – and I use the term loosely, has changed dramatically.

There was a time when a bachelor of arts in journalism from a major university was a prerequisite to landing a job as a sports reporter or columnist for a local paper. Today, the real journalists compete with average Joe’s who slap up a basic blog and opine on the town’s favorite teams.

Haloti Ngata and The 2006 NFL Draft
Mar 05, 2015

Former Ravens executive Phil Savage recalls Round 1 of the 2006 NFL Draft. Phil was then the Cleveland Browns GM and had the 12th pick in that draft, one ahead of the Ravens and one that he ultimately dealt to Ozzie Newsome in Baltimore.

Success On Draft Day
Mar 04, 2015

What is it that sets the Ravens apart from the other teams? Recently RSR chatted with former Ravens personnel executive Phil Savage who told a story that should make any Ravens fan feel good about their team.

Webb Leverage
Mar 04, 2015

Some analysts believe that Lardarius Webb should refuse to take a pay cut and that he has all the leverage in his contract talks with the Ravens.

Does he really?

Think again…

Windows
Mar 04, 2015

It’s been said that in the NFL’s era of the salary cap, some believe that you have to get it while the getting is good, before the window of opportunity closes.

I once asked Steve Bisciotti how the Baltimore Ravens have managed to consistently be a playoff participant and keep those windows open.

His response consisted of two words: Joe Flacco.

Ray Rice’s Settlement
Mar 03, 2015

Rice deserves an opportunity to take an NFL field again provided he can deliver for the team that chooses to give him that second chance.

What he doesn’t deserve is a single cent of settlement money from the Baltimore Ravens. Instead he got $1.588 million.

The Mysteries of Elam And Brown
Mar 02, 2015

The first two picks the Ravens made in the 2013 NFL Draft looked great on paper – Matt Elam and Arthur Brown. Both were leaders, both possessed a burst and it appeared based on the many mock drafts the Ravens landed two players with first round grades.

But so far one appears to be a bust and the other regularly wears street clothes on Sundays.

Savage On Ozzie
Mar 01, 2015

Each year the question is raised… “When will Ozzie Newsome retire?”

Perhaps that question is at least in part driven by the general manager in waiting, Eric DeCosta who has been sitting patiently on standby for his chance, despite the opportunities extended to him to be a GM with other NFL clubs.

Recently I had a chance to speak to former Ravens Director of Personnel Phil Savage to get his take on Ozzie, retirement and the possibility of an AD position at the University of Alabama.

Taking Aim at BR.com
Feb 23, 2015

Ravens blogger criticizes the team’s official website for providing insufficient research on an article about Torrey Smith. The blogger then insinuates that maybe BR.com should just learn how to do it by reading Baltimore Beatdown.

We’ve heard a similar story before.

Deflate Gate Suddenly Goes Away
Feb 23, 2015

Like a scene from The Sopranos the NFL suddenly made Deflate Gate go away.

The Ravens Answer to Nuke LaLoosh
Feb 23, 2015

Kyle Boller was a good guy, a hard worker and it wasn’t his fault that he was taken in Round 1 instead of round 3 or 4 where he should have been selected. He was also wildly inaccurate. Here’s a summer camp story that describes how so off-the-mark he could be.

Ravens Dez’d And Confused
Feb 23, 2015

The Ravens had the 25th pick in the 2010 draft and a clear need at wide receiver. As Dez Bryant’s decline down the board began to resemble an avalanche, the Ravens made some inquiries about moving up to grab the OK State Cowboy.

No Need to Worry if Forsett Leaves
Feb 22, 2015

At this time last year the Ravens had question marks at running back. Bernard Pierce was seemingly in the doghouse and some weren’t sure if Ray Rice would end up in the jailhouse. Who would run the ball in Gary Kubiak’s offense? Today we’re left wondering who will run the ball in Marc Trestman’s offense.

Love Is Blind
Feb 22, 2015

Kyle Boller was the 19th overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, a classic example of a team reaching for need and an expensive lesson for Brian Billick and the Baltimore Ravens.

Hands Down The Ravens BEST Free Agent Signing Ever!
Feb 19, 2015

The Ravens have never really been big players in free agency.
Instead Ozzie Newsome prefers to find those complementary players who are pieces to a puzzle and when matched up properly their productivity reaches new level. It’s the ultimate game of roster architecture – building a whole that is greater than the some of its parts.

Ozzie has hit on many, missed on but a few.

But without question, with the free agent signing of Shannon Sharpe, Ozzie hit it out of the park.

The Fan Experience
Feb 19, 2015

The NFL may soon be forced to navigate unchartered waters – filling NFL stadiums. As the costs to attend games climb and the inconveniences mount while the experience of staying at home improves, fans are beginning to question the value of live games. It’s time that the NFL stops with the lip service and does something more for their paying customers.

Jamal Lewis Dissed by NFL Network
Feb 18, 2015

One of the NFL Network’s Top 10 lists included the best Single Season Rushing performances of all-time. Shockingly Jamal Lewis’ 2003 season when he rushed for 2,066 yards was not included. Lewis’ exclusion renders the list meaningless and here’s why.

Harbaugh
Feb 13, 2015

John Harbaugh faced many challenges during the 2014 season that would have completely derailed many coaching efforts. But Harbaugh’s focus and ability to weather adversity helped give the Ravens a chance to succeed when other coaches would have surely failed.

Father & Son
Feb 13, 2015

Just prior to the arrival of the Ravens from Cleveland this father and son had a falling out. It was one of those typical battles when foolish pride gets in the way. Hear how the arrival of the Ravens in Baltimore brought peace to a family feud.

What Does Shawshank Redemption Have in Common With The Ravens?
Feb 09, 2015

«Some birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up DOES rejoice. But still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they’re gone.»

In Shawshank Redemption these words were used to describe Andy Dufresne. They could have just as easily been used to describe Ray Lewis.

Haloti Restructure
Feb 09, 2015

Haloti Ngata carries a $16M cap figure in 2015. That WILL change. Releasing him represents an $8.5M cap savings. Haloti had a solid season in 2015 but did not perform to the level of his contract and his is a position of strength for the Ravens. Will they part ways in 2015? The team seems to have the upper hand. More here…

My Inner Ozzie
Feb 09, 2015

When taking into consideration their ERFAs and RFAs the Ravens are more than $5M over the projected cap of $141.8M. To create some cap room while unleashing my inner Ozzie Newsome here are a few suggested moves…

Carry The Chicken
Feb 09, 2015

Hazing has faded in the NFL yet there are certain rights of passage that exist for veterans to accept rookies. Carrying the helmet and pads for the veterans is an example.

In the dining room after practice and before film study, vets also expect rookies to tend to their food trays. They have to “carry the chicken”.

Here’s a story about a Raven who refused and it cost him dearly.

The Ravens 80 — 20 Rule
Feb 09, 2015

The benchmark the Baltimore Ravens use to determine whether or not it’s time to close the book on an expensive veteran is the 80/20 rule. If another player can provide 80% of the production of an established vet for 20% of the cost, YOU HAVE TO MAKE THAT MOVE! Here’s how the rule might be employed in 2015.

Melvin Gordon
Feb 06, 2015

The Ravens have historically kept their first round picks around for quite awhile, 8.2 seasons on average to be exact and that approach collides with the career expectancy of an NFL running back. Add it up and considering the devaluing of the RB position, it’s unlikely that the Ravens will select Melvin Gordon if he’s available with their first pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Michael Campanarooooo
Feb 05, 2015

The Ravens flirted with the idea of acquiring Julian Edelman but opted instead for Michael Campanaro. Both players are roughly 5’9”. Both have excellent change of direction skills. Both weigh in between 190-200 pounds. Both were clocked at roughly 4.5 in the 40-yard dash. Now the Ravens will wait and see if the physical similarities are matched on the field.

Ozzie Newsome and The Best Player Available
Feb 05, 2015

Ozzie Newsome has long been a proponent of selecting the best player available during the NFL Draft. Talent trumps need and as we’ve seen before that approach has produced wins on draft day.

Dorial Green-Beckham
Feb 05, 2015

Dorial Green-Bechham has tremendous upside and fills a position of need for the Baltimore Ravens. But is Ozzie Newsome willing to take a risk on DGB with the 26th overall pick, assuming he’s available, given the negative backlash from the Ray Rice domestic violence fallout?

Torrey Smith
Feb 04, 2015

Torrey Smith was offered a 5 year, $35M contract before the season according to Jason La Canfora, and he rejected it. That gamble didn’t exactly pay off as Torrey had an underwhelming 2014, and the Ravens should hesitate to give him that much.
