Описание игры:
Замечательная игра для всех изучающих английский язык. Позволяет в игровой форме пополнить и закрепить словарный запас. Можно играть и вдвоем, но лучше поделиться на две команды. Одна команда тянет карту, на которой написана категория, например город. Вы начинаете вспоминать названия городов, останавливайтесь на одном и передвигаете соответствующие буквы в свою сторону. Ваша цель «захватить» 8 букв раньше, чем противник. К концу игры букв на поле все меньше и придумать подходящее слово все труднее.
Как играть:
1. Игроки делятся на команды, выбирается кто ходит первым. Между командами размещается игровая доска.
2. Разместите все буквы в алфавитном порядке посередине игрового поля.
3. Выберите, какая сторона карт-категорий участвует в игре. Более сложные задания на синей стороне карточки, поэтому для первых игр лучше выбрать зеленую. Разместите карты в коробочке.
Теперь начинаем играть:
1. Когда очередь дошла до вашей команды, один игрок тянет карту из коробочки, размещает ее на столе и зачитывает категорию. Другая команда засекает время.
2. Участники играющей команды выкрикивают слова, соответствующие названной категории. Цель — подобрать слово, которое включает наибольшее количество желаемых букв. Пока время не истекло, необходимо остановиться на одном из слов и подвинуть каждую букву этого слова, из тех что есть на доске, на одну клеточку в свою сторону. Когда время истекает, команда прекращает двигать буквы.
3. Очередь переходит к противоположной команде.
Первая команда, набравшая 8 фишек с буквами побеждает.

Подготовка к игре:
1. Разделите игроков на команды.
2. Положите игровое поле между командами.
3. Фишки с буквами положите на указанные клетки на поле.
4. Приготовьте карточки с заданиями и песочный таймер.
5. Выберите уровень сложности: синяя сторона карточек – сложнее, чем оранжевая.
6. Определите, какая команда начнет игру.
Ход игры:
Задача – захватить 8 фишек с буквами.
1. Игрок команды берет 1 карточку с заданием, кладет ее на стол (все игроки могут видеть задание), читает задание вслух. Игрок из команды соперников запускает песочный таймер. Например, задание “a job”
2. Все игроки команды предлагают варианты ответов на вопрос. Команда принимает решение, какое 1 слово они выбирают для ответа после «мозгового штурма». Например, игроки приняли решение остановиться на слове “Teacher”.
3. Пока время таймера не истекло, один из игроков команды передвигает буквы на поле, соответствующие озвученному слову: T, E, A, C, H, E, R. Игроки передвигают фишки на сторону своей команды. Каждая буква смещается на одну клетку, если в слове 2 одинаковые буквы – тогда перемещаем фишку в соответствии с количеством букв, т.е. на 2 клетки.
*Важно! Когда команда озвучивает слово и передвигает фишки с буквами, соперники должны проверять, все ли буквы перемещаются в соответствии с написанием слова. Например, если игроки забыли, что в слове Teacher есть буква “А” и соперники заметили ошибку – команда, допустившая ошибку, пропускает следующий ход.
4. Как только таймер истек, игрок из команды соперников говорит STOP. После того, как время истекло, игроки не могут передвигать фишки.
5. Ход переходит ко 2-ой команде.
6. Игра продолжается до тех пор, пока одна из команд не захватит 8 фишек. Чтобы получить фишку (захватить ее) – буква должна уйти с поля на сторону одной из команд.
* Для того, чтобы удерживать фишки на поле как можно дольше и не давать им сместиться к одной из команд, участникам следует придумывать слова, в которых будут задействованы такие буквы, которые близки к тому, чтобы уйти с игрового поля. Например, назвав слово Teacher, игроки одной из команд сместили букву “E” в свою сторону на 2 клетки. Если в следующем ходу они снова назовут слово с буквой “E” – она уйдет к ним в качестве балла. Чтобы этого не допустить, соперникам нужно тоже называть слово с буквой “E” в ответе на свое задание, чтобы начать перемещать букву “E” в сторону своей команды.

Описание «Word on the Street Junior»
Word on the Street Junior uses the same game play as 2009’s Word on the Street: Players are presented with a category, choose a word that fits that category, then move the letters in that word toward their side of the street. If a player or team moves eight letters off their side of the board, they win the game. Word on the Street Junior differs from its parent in that it includes categories appropriate for younger players (ages 8 and up instead of 12 and up) and the complete alphabet instead of only 17 letters. Including the vowels will likely make the game easier for younger players as they won’t have to strain to think of words with little used consonants.

This game is awesome for all ages! I played first with my five year old son. He thought of the words that answered the simple question cards (such as something that is brown) and I told him the letters he had to slide to his side. We had a blast when the letters were on his side of the street and then moved to my side after it was my turn. It was a lot of back and forth so it kept the game exciting. I then played with my 8 and 10 year olds. This was so exciting to see them spell the words. I actually found it helpful to have a small wipe board that they could spell the word on and then move the letter tiles. It is a very different educational game. I love the fact that it can also be used on the classroom in small groups. Definitely worth a purchase!!

I have a lot to say about this game- all awesome things, with one suggestion…
I thought this game looked interesting and wondered if it would work with the Phonics based program that I use (which includes 70 phonograms, many of which are multi-letter). Upon opening the box, I found it to be a very nicely made, sturdy, tri-fold board, with a good storage container for the cards, although the box seems a little too big for the product. You don’t even have to punch out any of the letter tiles and risk ripping them! I loved that the category cards are color coded with one side being more challenging than the other. Both people could play at the same level, or you could level the playing field a bit by having the older person play from the orange side while the younger read from the blue side. Or you can simply let the game grow with their needs and provide many opportunities for play over the course of the child’s education. The instructions are written in a way that there are teams, which works because each team has the opportunity to brainstorm together and come to a conclusion (which other skills come into play if they are strategic in knowing what letters they really need/or are close to getting in a round). However, we played one on one and it worked just as well. For the first round, I played it with a 10 year old and noticed that it was going to take a while to get to a winner (capturing 8 letter tiles). I mentioned that maybe we should just play until one of us captured 4 letter tiles and he said, «No, I want to go to 8! This is fun!» KUDOS to Educational Insights when a child is begging to continue! SUGGESTION- in between step #2 & 3, I would recommend that you have the children write down their chosen word (paper/marker board, etc) before they move the letter tiles on the board, instead of guessing while moving the tiles to prevent as many mistakes. It helps reinforce spelling. I also watched a 9 & 10 year old play and they loved it!

This game is virtually a letters tug-of-war. It suggests playing with teams and comes with an egg-timer to give the teams a limit to agree upon the word they’ll use in response to the question written on the card they selected. It’s just as much fun playing with two and the timer is unnecessary in that case. You spell out the answer and move each letter one lane over to your side of the street. On your opponent’s turn, he can use that same letter moving it one lane toward his side of the street. Once the letter is off the board «street,» the point belongs to the person who took it off. The letter can still be used to complete words for other answers but it doesn’t get put back on the board. First player to get 8 letters off the «street» is the winner. My 8 years young grandchild and I enjoy playing this game.

We got this for our 4, 6, and 8 year old grandchildren. Although all could play, and even though the 4 year old knows his alphabet, and the 6 year old can read, it was our 8 year old who really got into the game and began to use some strategies. The younger ones participated, but not entirely. When asked to name things found in the kitchen, or foods that are red, they couldn’t come up with any answers (even though they do know). I think they are too young to understand that speed is important in this game. The good thing about this game is that you play on teams. So there is no one loser (or winner). Instead, it’s the team that loses or wins. (makes losing a bit easier for the young kids). The team members don’t have to be even, just balanced to be fair. (8 year old and Grandpa on one team, 4 and 6 year old on Grandma’s team….)

This is a good game but it took me a minute to learn how to play it. It is played in teams, which is really good for our family. I found it best to write the selected word on a whiteboard to help our first grader with the spelling. It is lots of fun for children and adults, which makes it the perfect family game.

This is a game I bought to use with my kids this year for homeschooling. It’s been great so far! I did decide to let the kids utilize a dry erase board while playing which helps them as they are developing their spelling skills. This is the best spelling game we’ve played thus far!
