English has many illogical words and turns of phrase that sometimes don’t make sense in a literal way. When these occur, it can sometimes be traced back in history to a way of life that has now been lost. This is exactly where we can find the origin of terms such as “Chairman of the Board” and “above board,” among other board-related phrases. These terms have become so ubiquitous in the English language, that you probably never noticed that their meaning is not entirely clear from the expression itself. While you can expect native speakers to understand when you use phrases like this, these are the kind of terms that will confuse English language learners. Understanding how these phrases and words came to be can help you teach them.
The phrases “Chairman of the Board, “above board,” “room and board,” “board games,” “board meeting,” and “board room” all come from the same origin, dating back to Tudor times in England. In this period, daily life revolved around farming and society was highly hierarchical. In the countryside, wealthy landowners employed labourers to work their land, partially paying them with a midday meal. The landowner’s domestic life would have revolved around his house’s great hall, and more specifically, a large, wooden table known as a board.
Business Board
Here at the board, the landowner would conduct business, entertain and feed his family, labourers and guests. The labourers and family members would sit on benches on either side of the long table. However, as the head of the household, the landowner would sit in a chair at the head. This is where we get the term “Chairman of the Board.” Today, it signifies the head of a board of directors at a company, but the term has been passed down from this tradition. Similarly, while board rooms and board meetings today are associated with business, the terms originate from the Tudor board.
As the board was the centre of life in a Tudor household, this is also where the landowner paid his labourers. In this situation, the landowner would place the money on top of the board to show that he was being honest, hence the term “above board.” Having your hands in sight, above board, showed that you were not doing anything you shouldn’t under the table. You were ensuring that everyone could see that you were keeping to the rules. This is what the the expression means today, but it had a more literal sense when it originated.
Domestic Board
Similarly, if an inn or landowner offered “room and board” or “bed and board,” this meant they would host guests overnight and feed them around the table. Today, these terms designate the same – an overnight stay with meals included – but the association of board with food has been lost, so to English learners, this could be confusing.
Perhaps the most logical term (to modern English-speakers) to come from the word board, is “board game.” Today, these games typically come with a board to play on, but originally the term referred to games played on the Tudor board. In fact, the games were scratched into the board itself!
Etymology
The word “board” that all of these terms revolve around derives from the Old Norse term børd, which means plank. This makes sense, when you understand that the board was not a fixed piece of furniture like a modern table. Instead, it was a set of legs with a removable board on top. In fact, the tradition that putting your elbows on the table is rude also comes from this type of Tudor furniture: as the top wasn’t fixed to the legs, if you put your elbows on the table, the whole thing might tip!
Many of the terms and words we use without thinking today come from historical tradition. It’s important to be aware of these phrases that don’t make literal sense as you teach English as they can really throw learners off. Understanding yourself how the terms came to be can help you answer questions about why we say something in English.

We have been looking at the different resources in the new AssistiveWare Core Word Classroom. Last month we looked at the Core Word Planners, helping you to plan for core words in everyday activities you are doing. Today we move on to looking at the Core Word of Week Planners. They are similar, but these are more specific planners to help focused modeling and teaching of a specific core word. Let’s look more closely at this approach and how you can use these resources from the AssistiveWare Core Word Classroom.
The WOW factor
Get the WOW factor in your classroom! You can have a way to introduce, teach and model core words consistently if you take a WOW (Word of the week) approach. This approach means choosing one (or even a few) core words and using them consistently across all activities, throughout the day. WOW helps teams to be focused on a few key core words, allowing more time and attention to modeling just those words.
Core words are those 50 to 400 words that make up most of what we say in typical conversation and writing. While core words may seem harder to teach because they are not as “picturable” as nouns, we know that with consistent modeling in natural situations, that our AAC learners can use core words to communicate independently and successfully.
Core Word of the Week Planners
The AssistiveWare Core Word Classroom has planners that can help you give your classrooms the WOW factor! The Core Word of the Week Planners are specifically designed to support teams in modeling a set of core words throughout the day, across all activities. Used in conjunction with the Core Word of the Week Displays — printable displays that show the location of the core words — you can get core words happening with WOW!
Like many of our resources in the AssistiveWare Core Word Classroom, we focus on the 3W’s — the words, whys and ways. And while in the Core Word of the Week Planner, the WORD is more obvious, it is still important to use that word to communicate for different reasons (whys) and to combine that word with other words to communicate in different ways.
We currently have 30 different core words (or pairs of words such as here & there, in & out), and have plans to expand to more core words in time. We have an even mix of pronouns, verbs/actions, describing words, questions and prepositions, all of which are highly functional core words. The words are chosen based on the core words used to create the Proloquo2Go Crescendo Core Word vocabulary.
What will you find in a Core Word of the Week Planner?
Each Core Word of the Week Planner consists of the following four categories: — Whys & Ways table — Specific grammar — Extension ideas — Literacy suggestions You can find an explanation of each below. Whys & Ways Table
This table gives suggestions for ways to model the core words to your students. These ways are split into the different reasons to communicate, or whys. Sentences are in order of increasing length and complexity, to give you ideas you can use with students of different language skill levels.
For example, in the “different” Core Word of the Week Planner, the suggestions in the “Asking for Information” cell start with a simple “what is different?” and end with a six word sentence:
- What is different?
- Where is the different one?
- Who wants a different one?
- Why is it different?
- How is this different from that?
- When can we do something different?
Specific grammar
This section gives you some specific ideas for how you may support the grammatical learning of the core word for those students that are ready, eg. teaching past tense of “go” > “went”.
Extension ideas
Extension ideas give you some extra ideas you may like to try to extend language and create more opportunities to model the core word/s throughout the day.
Literacy suggestions
We also have given some brief starting points and suggestions for extending the activity to include a literacy component. The suggestions are not comprehensive and you should use alongside your current comprehensive literacy program.
Getting started with Core of the Week Planners
- Explore the Whys & Ways table to help you in planning your modeling. Use copy/paste to grab sentences you want to be sure to use with your students. You can make a cheat sheet for your classroom staff in this way. You can choose between making a single cheat sheet for use with all your students, or a customized sheet for each teacher or aide with whys & ways that target the specific needs of the group of students they will be working with.
- Explore the Extension ideas to find suggestions to extend use of the words of the week throughout the day.
- Explore the Literacy suggestions and remember that literacy is the ultimate AAC, as it allows you to say anything without waiting for someone to program in the words! Every student can benefit from literacy instruction, regardless of the level of literacy they eventually reach.
Core Word of the Week Displays
These Displays were designed to support a Core Word of the Week approach, by giving you printable and easy to read posters that can be displayed prominently in the classroom and around the school. They could even be shared with parents for use at home!
Page 1 of the WOW Display provides visuals, with both the symbol for the core word, as well as showing where the word can be found on the Proloquo2Go Crescendo core word board. If you are using a different AAC system, you could take a screen capture of your core word screen to create a similar page to this.
Page 2 of the WOW Display, provides sentence examples for using the target core word. These have been organised into 3 main communication functions:
- Needs & Wants (eg. like it, like that, not like, I would like to __, etc)
- Giving/Getting Information (eg. you like it, what like?, he will like, etc.)
- Social Interaction (eg. I like to see you, etc.)

Weekly Early Reader:
At the end of each week, students put their new reading skills into practice with their own early reader. Each booklet takes a single sheet of paper and is folded to make a 4-page early reader. To assemble fold in half horizontally, then fold again in half vertically so that the title page is on the cover of the booklet. Students write their name on the cover page and color a star for each time they have read the book. For extra practice encourage students to underline or color their word as they find it in the story.
Review, Games & Assessments:
Mystery Monster Review Pages: This curriculum includes 8 Mystery Monster Review Pages for use at weeks 5, 10, 15, 20, etc…. Each sheet includes 3-5 words for students to find and color on their chart. When complete they will reveal a mystery monster. These sheets are wonderful for providing students with a little extra practice.
Sight Word Bingo: There are two different Bingo Games to be played at Week 20 and Week 40. There are three different bingo boards for each set. Ask children to write their words from weeks 1-20 on a sheet of paper then cut apart to make calling cards.
Sight Word Sticker Chart: Available in full color or black and white, this sticker chart is a great incentive to hang on your classroom wall. Kids color in or place a sticker on each word they have mastered.
Sight Word Student Assessment Charts: This assessment chart is a quick way to gauge where your child is at with their sight word memorization. Use stickers or write the date next to each word read. We recommend assessing children at regular intervals so you can adapt your studies as necessary. Children needing additional work can use their sight word notebook, word flashcards, and early readers for review.

ASL Chart: Start each week by learning the ASL for your sight word. Read and recognize the word in sentences. Make your work with letter magnets and practice the fingerspelling as shown on the chart. Hang this chart in the classroom for review each morning. For words where there is not an exact sign, fingerspelling is taught.
Sight Word Brick Pictures: Children write their sight words alongside four review words. Each time they finish a row they cover the corresponding word with building bricks to complete the picture.
Tuesday:
Spin, Read, & Build: Children spin a pencil and paperclip spinner. They read the word, then place a block on that word in the picture. This continues until the picture is complete. Students then practice reading their word three times.
Sight Word Worksheet: Students trace, find, write, spell, search, spell, and solve the maze for their sight word. This is a great way to practice oral spelling by having students read the letters aloud as they go.
Wednesday:
Sight Word Dab: This colorful page can be used in a variety of ways. Children can use bingo daubers to find and dab their sight word. Alternatively, children can color with crayons, use flat round marbles, coins, or even playdough to roll and smash their word.
Sight Word Sentences: Children cut and paste the picture words to match the correct sentence. Children then write the sentence on the line. For struggling writers, have children circle their sight word in the sentence and practice writing the sight word a few times on the lines.
Thursday:
Touch & Read: Students place their fingers on the dots as they read their sight word and slowly build into reading a sentence.
Sight Word Notebook: These activities are intended to be stored in a small notebook. This page includes a flashcard for weekly review, sight word snap cube card to make, and ASL letter tiles to spell the sight word.
Weekly Early Reader:
Again, this is done in the same format as the Preschool level so it all flows naturally.
Sight Word War: This curriculum includes 8 Sight Word War Battle Boards! Students write their sight words on their board (just like you might arrange your battleships) then take turns seeking & destroying their sight word ships.
Sight Word Code Cracker: This set includes fun sight word flashcards for students to decode. Each card features a variety of pictures, for which students must identify the beginning letters to spell out their sight word. These are great when laminated for reuse, or as flashcards for performing mentally for speed.
DIY Sight Word Word Search: Students create their own word search to challenge a friend or family member. Using the word back at the bottom of each page, students must arrange their words on the grid, then fill in the remaining blanks with random letters.
