I hope wherever you are, it is starting to warm up a bit. It’s the countdown to spring and I am just so excited for March! With a new month, as always, comes new monthly themes and vocabulary! Building March vocabulary words in the classroom should naturally weave throughout your day. Helping students generalize a list of vocabulary words doesn’t have to be boring. I am going to share with you some fun ways of teaching vocabulary in the month of March. For other March ideas visit my March category on my blog!
When I was in the classroom, I liked using seasonal vocabulary words to keep things exciting in the classroom. My March vocabulary words product has 20 words outlined for the month of March for you!
What are some ways you can utilize different vocabulary cards?
- Display them
- Memory Game
- Scavenger Hunt
I think its always a good idea to have a March vocabulary word wall somewhere displayed in your classroom. I personally used my vocabulary words at my language arts center during work centers, however they really can be displayed wherever works for you. It might be beneficial to display them in your morning meeting area for a quick morning review of words!
The thing I love about flashcards is that you can use them to play so many games! Simply print two sets, or two different versions (text and picture etc) and play a game of memory.
Another fun way to incorporate vocabulary flashcards is to play a game of scavenger hunt. During recess/lunch or any break when the students are outside, hide vocabulary cards around the room! You can tuck them behind things, pin them up on a bulletin board, stuff in books. The options are limitless and are SO fun. Simply have a student find a vocabulary card and have them either say the word, use the word in a sentence, draw a picture of the word, write the word etc. You can easily turn the scavenger hunt game into a constructive activity!

Vocabulary Activities
Incorporating vocabulary activities into your day is a great way to help students generalize their new vocabulary words in a fun way. Here are some ideas for you.
- Coloring pages
- Worksheets
- BINGO games
- File folder games
- Drawing
- Art projects
Coloring worksheets are a great way to have fun while talking vocabulary!
Various spelling and writing worksheets are a good way for students to generalize their March vocabulary words. These worksheets can also be used as pre and post test for the month. Simply print and use in work centers or send home for homework!
BINGO is a no brainer. BINGO is a great fun Friday activity. Generalize the vocabulary in a fun way. You can play it as a whole class (20 cards included) or play during work centers!
File folder activities are a go to for EVERY skill. I love them, and used them religiously in the classroom. My March vocabulary words pack includes 4 different file folder games for the classroom.
The file folders included are:
- picture to picture match
- picture to text match
- text to text match
- spelling
Directed Drawing for the Month of March
Now, it may seem obvious, but art and drawing is a PERFECT way to incorporate some vocabulary generalization! I love using my directed drawing worksheets for easy differentiation. When I was in the classroom, I would typically model one large drawing on the white board first, and then have students complete their own directed drawing worksheet at their desk. I love these because all students are drawing at their own level but still drawing the same thing! You can also use these to guide a larger painting activity. Have students draw their picture on a poster and have them paint it! My March directed drawing product comes with 8 different themed directed drawing themes with five levels each!
Tracing directed drawing is a perfect level for beginning artists. Students can trace and color the picture.
4 step directed drawing teaches the students to draw the picture in four simple steps, perfect for emerging artists!
6 step directed drawing teaches the students to draw the picture in six simple steps, perfect for emerging artists!
Copying directed drawing is for those ALMOST independent artists! Simply copy the model of the picture!
Lastly, for those independent artists, students can draw an image all on their own!
March Books and Activities
Picture books are MY jam! I just love them. A lot of March themes center around St. Patrick’s Day. These books can be put on display all month! I love to collect picture books. The more books, the better! below are some of my favorite books that can be used in March.
- How to Catch a Leprechaun by Adam Wallace
- There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover by Lucille Colandro
- The Luckiest St. Patrick’s Day Ever by Teddy Slater
- The Night Before St. Patrick’s Day by Natasha Wing
- Pete the Cate: The Great Leprechaun Chase by James Dean
- Ten Lucky Leprechauns by Kathryn Heling
- That’s What Leprechauns Do by Eve Bunting
- Jamie O’Rourke and the Big Potato by Tomie DePaola
- The Story of Saint Patrick’s Day by Patricia A. Pingry
- The Story of the Leprechaun by Katherine Tegen
- Pout-Pout Fish: Lucky Leprechaun by Deborah Diesen
- S is for Shamrock by Eve Bunting
March Videos
March vocabulary words can also be generalized into various songs and videos on you tube. I love to use morning meeting as a time to watch a quick vocabulary video. I would also sometimes display a video during rest time after lunch! Here are a few of my favorite you tube videos/songs for the month of March:
March calendar song PERFECT for your morning meeting and/or calendar routine. Jack Hartman is one of my favorites. This song is perfect for the month of March!
March is a fun month. A lot of changes, a lot of transitions and a lot of learning opportunities. If you are interested in implementing vocabulary this school year, consider purchasing the discounted bundle!

Definition
Fair (adjective): Just; appropriate; equal
Fair (skin, hair): light (skin, hair)
Fairly (good): quite, relatively (good).
Fair in the news
March 8th marks International Women’s Day: commemorating unfairness to women annually since 1977.
The only fair thing about injustice is how fairly universal it is.
Fair expressions
Fair play: Honorable conduct. Good for polite society and tennis.
All’s fair in love and war: In some situations it’s acceptable to behave badly. Debatable.
Fair enough: Used when something appears reasonable. Touch me again and I’ll kick you in the balls, fair enough?
A history of fairness
70,000 BCE Nomadic men and women enjoy equal status.
12,000 BCE Agricultural Revolution. Women become property, men become bastards.
21st century: Most women can vote, but earn less than men and are disproportionately victims of violence. Unfair enough?

“Embracing your true self radiates a natural beauty that cannot be diluted or ignored.”
~ Steve Maraboli
Practicing “Inside-Out” is trademark at The Dailey Method. But what does this really mean in our bodies and in our lives? How do we get better at tuning-out the noise of the outside world, and tuning-in to our deep selves? EMBRACE is our word of the month for March, and these are some ways to practice tuning-in so you can “Burn Bright” in your life.
LOCATE YOUR COMPASS – During our day to day lives most of us are driven by, and constantly responding to, the needs of others. Our work, family, friends and to-do lists pull us, oftentimes in directions that we don’t necessarily choose. This is directing us based on an external compass. Try to see if you can start to notice that tendency, and tune inward instead. Learn to locate your inner compass, and let it determine what you will say “Yes” and “No” throughout your day instead of responding to the outside pressures. I hear so often women say to me “I really wish I had just said no.” “No” is a practice and an important component of self-care. By saying “no” more often you can allow to make space for a bigger “yes!”- for the things that are really important in your life and can add value instead of stress or busyness. In your TDM practice, try to use external supports like your teacher’s cues, music, and the positive energy of other students to help you, but keep remembering to tune back inward as a priority. If you’re not sure what “flow” to follow, follow the flow of your own breath. Pay attention to what your body needs in each exercise. Start to truly trust your internal compass.
NOTICE WHAT’S GOOD – The same way we all have a tendency to externalize our compass, we also tend to notice things that need “fixing”, that are not “perfect”, that we “wish were different.” Try this: Right from the beginning of class, set an intention to notice and EMBRACE what is good and what is working vs. what you think is wrong or needs to change. Pick at least one thing that’s great to KEEP throughout your practice and then allow the rest to flow and GROW from there. This is a great way to train your brain for a life-practice. As you get better at embracing what’s good in your own body/TDM practice, you’ll get better at embracing what is good all day long. Embrace the fullness of each moment, and notice you really don’t need to change much at all. This moment is enough, you are always enough, and life is good. Be grateful for the positive in the now.
EMBRACE YOURSELF – Literally! Use the muscular energy in your body to EMBRACE yourself from the inside-out. Imagine hugging your muscles around your bones, drawing energy to your focal point, pulling into your strong center. You can also practice this figuratively. Think about your inner fire, and think about words that help you remember and appreciate who YOU are! Remember you need to feed your own fire first. When you learn to tap your own inner energy you’ll have so much more to share.
EMBRACE OTHERS – Research shows that a 20-second HUG is one of life’s most powerful emotional cocktails. Hugging for 20 seconds floods our body with high levels of oxytocin, and has been shown to create powerful bonds and increase happiness and trust. Scientists suggest trying to hug eight times a day! So…. hug your friends, family, loved ones – maybe even strangers?! Ok, at least send strangers you encounter “mental hugs” by making eye contact, smiling and sending love. Also notice your practice of embracing yourself and notice what is good makes you BETTER at doing this for others, too.
KEEP PRACTICING FLOW – Here’s a great reminder: Emotion = E-Motion = Energy-in-Motion. Embracing is about allowing ourselves to tune-in and feel deeply. But when emotions we don’t like show up, do we hold onto them or forgive and let go? Because all emotion is “energy in motion” we need to experience and then release feelings – let them flow as they are meant to. Otherwise they can get “stuck” and negatively impact us, becoming deep anger, resentment, illness, etc. Keep building on our February word of the month and allow energy and emotions to FLOW. Practice this during your Dailey Method classes and your brain will start to learn new patterns, shifts will start to occur and your life could change for the better. But, remember, life is pretty darn good in this moment, so EMBRACE it.
Sending you a big 20-second HUG right now!
— Jill & Lorna

When I was a little girl I was horrible at spelling. I did poorly on all of my spelling tests and I always lost points on assignments for misspelled words. I remember talking to my dad and telling him that I hated spelling because I was so bad at it. His response was one that I still think about from time to time, “you’re not bad at spelling, you’re just so creative that you can think of other ways to spell words.”
Have you ever wondered if maybe you’re not actually bad at (cooking, painting, designing, decorating, gardening, etc) but you’re just so creative that you have your own cool, unique way of doing it?
Our Spring/ Summer 2021 collection has us really celebrating the creativity that lives within each of us. We asked you guys how you find creativity and you told us about playing games with your children, making and finding good food, baking, tending to your plants, being outdoors, the list goes on. After all, every single one of us is creating every single day.
You’re so beautifully making your own life art, every day, as you create the life you love. Imagination, beauty, creativity, those aren’t traits only found in skilled artists, those are traits that you are embodying everyday. As you find ways to get your toddler to eat more veggies or make up games for your bored five year old, you are more creative than you know.
So this month we are celebrating creativity in all its forms and we’re making sure you know that your creativity is unmatched. You’re not bad at (fill in the blank), you just have your own creative way of doing it. Only you can create the type of life you want. Only you can fill your life with beauty and art and joy. And you’re doing a really good job at it!

May – месяц Майи. Maia (что означает «великая») – богиня весны, дочь Фавна и жена Вулкана.
June — месяц Юноны. Юнона является одной из верховных богинь Римского пантеона. Она – богиня брака и благополучия женщин. Она – жена и сестра Юпитера. Она отождествляется с греческой богиней Герой.

Откуда произошли названия месяцев (Where the names of the months came from)
You know the names of the months but have you ever thought about their origin, about how they appeared in English?
Here is a story about how the months were called. Compare it with what you already know.
January was called after Janus, the two-faced Roman god. He was the god of beginnings and endings and was the protector of the Roman gates and doorways.
Once February was the last month of the year and came before January, but at about 450 B.C. it came the second month. Its name is derived from Februa, a Roman festival of purification.
March comes from the god of war – Mars. He was pictured in a chariot drawn by two horses.
The origin of word April is quite different. It comes from a Latin word which means “to open”. April is a spring month when nature comes to life again.
May was named after the goddess, Maia. She was the most famous of the seven daughters of Atlas.
It is undecided whether June gets its name from the goddess Juno, the beautiful wife of Jupiter, or from Junius, who was a proud man and head of a great Roman family.
July was named after Julius Caesar, who was born in this month.
August was named after the great nephew of Julius Caesar. His name was Octavius, but he changed it to Augustus.
September comes from ‘septem’, meaning ‘seven’. It is a reminder that it was seventh month when the year began in March.
October, November and December are Latin words for the eighth, ninth and tenth months of the year.
As the Roman year began in January, the Christians decided to begin their year at the same time. So the year 754 B.C. became for the Christians the year 1 A.D.
