Web-Series Divergence
Word of Honor loosely follows the Faraway Wanderers’s plot and eventually abandons it in Episode 21, while there are characters that share the same name, or supposedly a counterpart, they diverge heavily from the novel’s content.
The reason for this as the scriptwriter had stated[1], is that she wanted to make the web-series more connected to each other, and make all of the characters motives align with each other. This direction created drastic changes in the characterisations and relationships between the characters and overall atmosphere of the story.

Trivia
- The title of the web-series is directly taken from Faraway Wanderers Chapter 15, where Shān Hé Lìng was referenced for the first time.
- The series was originally supposed to air during winter, however due to the delays, it was aired in summer.

There are several points for an 9 star review but first, I’ll explain why not a 10 star review: because of the camera work and sound design. I don’t know if the director (or directors?) had a not so great camera team operator because in some scenes you can see the way the camera shakes and it’s not consistent with the feeling of the scene. Although I understand why the sound design needed to be covered by the BGM because of the loud exterior sounds of other productions that happened in the same place and at the same time, there’s no enough digetic sound to give more dimensionality to the overall picture. With dubbing it’s another issue that I don’t have right to make criticism.
However, why 9 stars? Because even though it was a low budget production, it doesn’t feel like one. It’s obvious the production knew their weaknesses and their strengths and exploited both of them.
The first thing I applaud is the script. The script writer was debuting in this work, and already had done a excellent job of conveying the substancial (romantic) relationship of ZZS and WKX. It is not at all surprising that both GJ and ZZH were able to demonstrate good acting skills here, because the script worked on their behalf.
The second thing is the plot, although it falls into varied exhibition dialogues (understandable, because after all it is in television format), is interesting enough to be able to continue watching and waiting for the next episode. Besides, the cast doesn’t fall behind; although not everyone is at the level of the skill of ZZH or the other veteran actors, they stand in their own enough to show a convincing performance.
And the last thing: the fight scenes. In the first episodes those aren’t too great because of the edited slow motion, but later in the ongoing episodes, the fights have improved a lot, so much so that they give me adrenaline.
From a point of a viewer who has not seen many Chinese dramas, this series is quite recommended to enter the world of wuxia stories. Please love this serie! By the way, you can find the free episodes 1-10 at Youku channel.

A new Chinese action anime called Jun You Yun or titled in English as Word of Honor is up for the challenge of bringing astonishing fights and visual aesthetics to donghua viewers this 2022. Jun You Yun is one of Bilibili’s Chinese anime lineup this year and promises an exciting adventure set in a fantasy world with plenty of martial arts as one of its selling points.
Jun You Yun Donghua Overview
I am seriously hyped for this, so let’s take a quick look at Jun You Yun (Word of Honor) as a story and what should we expect from it. The upcoming donghua is adapted from a novel written by Zhou Mu Nan, the author of the Great Journey of Teenagers (Shaonian Ge Xing) which was one of the best martial arts donghua in recent years.
The Great Journey of Teenagers or also known as Juvenile Song or Song of Adolescence had been well-received by many viewers of Chinese animation, it’s been one of YOUKU’s most-watched series since 2019.
The story of Jun You Yun follows a similar route through its youthful journey and adventure. It also shares a lot of similar vibes to established wuxia or martial arts donghua like Song of the Broadsword (Zhen Dao Ge), Storm Rider: Clash of the Evils, and the recently released Legend of Shu.
Synopsis
Four teenagers who left the school and entered the arena for the first time went through all kinds of difficulties and dangers in order to find the truth, unravel the mystery of their life experiences, and become a gentleman. They value the way of a gentleman, and demonstrate the chivalry of “using their own strength to make the world fair”. A strange book, a grudge, a belief, a legend.

The production team behind Jun You Yun is led by Passion Paint Animation, a relatively new studio but has some big titles under its belt which is soon to be released such as Blader Soul (Bu Xing Si: Yuanqi), The First Order (from the author of Da Wang Rao Ming), and Legend of Assassin (which is also written by Zhou Mu Nan).
