Do you often feel discouraged or overwhelmed by life? Like how everything seems to go wrong and you need words of encouragement to get by?
When we were young, we have been taught that life is fun and should be lived to the fullest – one that must be filled with happiness. But as we grow old, we learn that life is not always easy. It becomes a battlefield we have to endure to survive.
Some days, things do not happen the way you want them to be. They fall apart, and you start to worry. Worse, you feel discouraged and lonely, thinking that there is no other way to straighten things up.
It is okay not to feel okay.
Psychologists even believe that experiencing challenges and feeling negative emotions sometimes help to keep your mind, body, and soul healthy. The balance between your positive and negative emotions is what makes you human.
You need to feel weak for you to be strong. Your failures, while they do not define you as a person, determine your success.
But how do you get back on track?
Simple: you need to have support and encouragement. You need to be surrounded by people and things that can serve as your pillars in overcoming whatever life throws at you.
While it is essential to keep yourself together (on your own), it doesn’t harm actually to get the back-up you need to start anew. Your friends, family, colleagues, and some words of encouragement are all you need to pull through.
This post is a list of uplifting words that may help you encourage yourself, your friend, or even the people in your workplace. We have gathered 161 words of encouragement that can brighten up your day and bring you positivity.
These words, even if just words, can be powerful. Encouraging means instilling courage – a brave act that is sometimes more compelling and effective than motivation.
Words of encouragement can help you think straight and get back on your feet. They are not just for you to ponder on, but for you to use as well whenever a friend is in need. They work for everyone – anytime, anywhere.
First, we give you words of support and strength that may uplift your spirit and give you the courage you need. They are words of inspiration and encouragement from people who have experienced their own struggles and eventually turned the tides.
As Mahatma Gandhi has put it, strength is not measured by physical capacity. It is determined by the number of times you fall, backed up with the bravery to stand, and finally change the game.
Let’s get to these motivational quotes you can share with a friend….

Some people say that you will never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have. Perhaps this is true.
We only realize that we are strong when we stumble upon challenges in life, and there is no other way to overcome these challenges except to become strong and face them with all might.
But should this strength end in you? If you were able to triumph over your failures, would it not be nice to have your friends experience the same thing?

Just like how your friends supported you when you needed them, return the favor and be their foundation in their most desperate times.
Sometimes, silence is all that they need. But more often than not, they just need a friend who will tell them the words they need to hear.
Additionally, your words of inspiration and strength need not be limited to your friends and family. With such power to encourage, you can even spread positive vibes in your workplace (or to a friend struggling over his work or business).
Sure, work can be daunting at times. When we don’t live up to other people’s expectations (or our own expectations), we tend to get sad and disappointed.
This is why we likewise need positive messages for work that may help us persevere more to achieve our goals.

During times of trouble, when the waters seem to sweep over us, we can find solace in the words of encouragement from the Bible. Agonizing events can debilitate one’s faith, however, constantly reminding yourself of the promises of God and clinging to them, will help you stand firm even in a fierce storm.
We all go through various trials and tribulations during our lives. There’s not a single person on earth who hasn’t experienced horrendous situations. However, the difference lies in how we respond to these situations and cope with them. Do we allow these harrowing events to shake our faith or to strengthen it! Romans 8:28 says «in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.» So no matter what we go through, rough waters or flames, we will come out victorious because of the one in whom we have placed our trust. However, during storms in life, when one feels low, one should read the different promises and words of encouragement from the Bible. Reading and claiming them will help you get through tough times.
Moreover, if you are at a crossroad or are going through something too much for you to bear, stop and seek God’s help. The best solution would be to fast and pray. I know you haven’t done it before and it may sound too ‘holy’, however, try it. Skip breakfast and lunch and spend almost 4-5 hours praying. It will be difficult to do this, especially if you haven’t done it before. Begin by singing songs you know. Then open the Bible, choose a particular book in the Bible, for example; the Psalms and begin reading aloud, chapter by chapter. In between, pray aloud and pour all that is in your heart to your Father in Heaven. Fasting and praying always makes a difference. Try it!
Here are some encouraging verses from the Bible, that have been listed down for you. Have a look at them.

Recently, I happened to attend a meeting conducted by Ravi Zacharias (Christian apologist and evangelist), where he shared an anecdote that I don’t think I will forget. He spoke of a child who lost her mother and asked her dad ‘If Jesus died on the cross for our sins, why did mommy have to die?’ The heartrending question left her father at a loss for words. Later, when they were driving down, the father noticed a huge truck traveling alongside. He noticed the shadow of the truck and asked the little girl to have a look at it. He then asked her, ‘If you were to be run over by either the truck or its shadow, which one would you choose?’ The daughter replied, ‘the shadow daddy, because the shadow wouldn’t hurt’. The father smiled and replied, ‘When Jesus died on the cross, the truck of God’s judgment went over Him, so the death we go through is only the shadow of death.’
So take heart and find solace in your Savior for He cares for you. Let’s hear the words of encouragement from the Bible on death.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-14
«But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.»
John 5:24-27
«I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.»
Revelation 14:13
«Then I heard a voice from heaven say, «Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.»
Romans 8:18
«I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.»
Romans 14:8
«For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.»
2 Corinthians 4:16-15:8
«Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.»
2 Corinthians 1:3-5
«Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.»
Words of Encouragement for the Anxious and Fearful
Life is like a roller coaster ride, you never know what’s next! However, when you sit into the roller coaster seat, you have a seat belt that you put on. This seat belt prevents you from falling out of your seat, no matter how fast the ride. Even during patches where the roller coaster takes you upside down, you remain in your seat. It’s because of the belt you’ve fastened. There are two points to remember here: put on the seat belt and believe it will protect you. Similarly, put your faith in Jesus Christ and believe He will protect you. Why should you believe He will protect you? Because the Bible tells you so. Let’s have a look at what God has to say to us.
Deuteronomy 31:6
«Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.»
Philippians 4:6
«I can do everything through him who gives me strength.»
John 14:1
«Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.»
Joshua 1:9
«Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.»
Isaiah 43:1-2
«But now, this is what the LORD says- he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: «fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.»
Jeremiah 29:11
«For I know the plans I have for you,» declares the LORD, «plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.»
2 Corinthians 12:9
«But he said to me, «My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.» Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.»
Psalm 23:4
«Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.»
Psalm 27:1
«The LORD is my light and my salvation-whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life-of whom shall I be afraid?»
Romans 8: 31-37
«What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: «For Your sake we are killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.» Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.»
Isaiah 51:12-13
«I, even I, am He who comforts you. Who are you that you should be afraid of a man who will die, and of the son of a man who will be made like grass? And you forget the LORD your Maker, who stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth.»
Words of Encouragement During Financial Crisis
There are times when we encounter a financial crisis in our lives. We begin to panic and fret, thinking how we will be able to supply for our families. Some of us may have even been just laid-off from our jobs, and now anxiety strikes. If our God has knit us in the womb, brought us this far in our lives, will He not open a door in this situation as well. Don Moen’s song, ‘God will make a way, where there seems to be no way’ is truly beautiful. It talks about God doing the impossible. So don’t lose hope or faith. Cling to these promises of God and keep confessing them. A breakthrough is on the way!
Psalm 37:25
«I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.»
Psalm 128:1-4
«Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in obedience to him. You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table. Yes, this will be the blessing for the man who fears the LORD.»
Jeremiah 29:11
«For I know the plans I have for you,» declares the LORD, «plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.»
Philippians 4:19
«And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.»
Deuteronomy 28:11
«The LORD will grant you abundant prosperity in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.»
Psalm 37:7-9
«Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret-it leads only to evil. For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land.»
Luke 12:22-25
«Then Jesus said to his disciples: «Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?»
Words of Encouragement for the One’s Who’ve Slipped
Even after being committed to the Lord, we find ourselves succumbing to temptations. Later, we live in guilt for not being able to overcome, even after knowing the truth. However, this is what God has to say. He does not want us to live a life of guilt and condemnation. He wants us to repent, ask for His forgiveness and move on. Once we ask for His forgiveness, He will not remember our sins anymore; it’s erased from His memory. How do I know this? His word says so. Let’s have a look!
Psalm 103:12
«As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.»
Isaiah 1:18
«Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.»
Isaiah 44: 21
«Remember these, O Jacob, and Israel, for you are My servant; I have formed you, you are My servant; O Israel, you will not be forgotten by Me! I have blotted out, like a thick cloud, your transgressions, and like a cloud, your sins. Return to Me, for I have redeemed you.» Sing, O heavens, for the LORD has done it! Shout, you lower parts of the earth; break forth into singing, you mountains, O forest, and every tree in it! For the LORD has redeemed Jacob, and glorified Himself in Israel.»
Romans 8:1-4
«Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.»
Ezekiel 36:25-26
«Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.»
Philippians 3:13-14
«But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.»
Romans 8:37
«No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.»
Words of Encouragement for the Ones with Health Issues
Proverbs 18: 21 says, «the tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.» This clearly emphasizes the importance of confessing God’s Word over our situations. Some of us may be suffering from health issues or may have beloved family members with health issues. Do not get discouraged my friend. Confess these verses from the Bible every now and then. It’s better to write them on paper and tape them to your mirror, cupboard, office desk, etc. Keep confessing them positively.
Psalm 91:1-6
«He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, «He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.» Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.»
Psalm 91:14-16
«Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation.»
Proverbs 3:5-6
«Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.»
Isaiah 59:1
«Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear.»
Exodus 23:25-26
«You shall serve the Lord your God, and he will bless your bread and your water, and I will take sickness away from among you. None shall miscarry or be barren in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days.»
Psalm 103: 1-3
«Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases.»
James 5:14-15
«Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.»
1 Peter 2:24
«He himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.»
Words of Encouragement Regarding your Children’s Salvation and Safety
As saved parents, the salvation of our children can prove quite disconcerting. Pray everyday for the salvation of your children. Pray that the Holy Spirit will work in their lives and convict them. Please don’t pressurize them to accept Christ. Just uphold them in prayer, as much as possible and keep confessing God’s Word.
Isaiah 44:3
«Yet hear me now, O Jacob My servant, and Israel whom I have chosen. Thus says the LORD who made you and formed you from the womb, who will help you: «Fear not, O Jacob My servant; and you, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen. For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, and My blessing on your offspring; they will spring up among the grass, like willows by the watercourses.’ One will say, ‘I am the LORD’s’; another will call himself by the name of Jacob; another will write with his hand, ‘The LORD’s,’ and name himself by the name of Israel.»
Isaiah 59:21
«As for me, this is my covenant with them,» says the LORD. «My Spirit, who is on you, will not depart from you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants, from this time on and forever,» says the LORD.»
Isaiah 54:13
«All your children will be taught by the LORD, and great will be their peace.»
Isaiah 49:18
«Lift up your eyes and look around; all your children gather and come to you. As surely as I live,» declares the LORD, «you will wear them all as ornaments; you will put them on, like a bride.»
Numbers 23:19,«God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?», so dear friends take heart. God can be trusted and you can cling on to his words of encouragement. If He has said the flames will not burn you, He means it. Moreover, God will never let you go through more than what you can bear. As my favorite preacher and mentor, PC Verghese says: ‘the best of your days are not behind you, but ahead of you!’ Have faith in your life jacket: ‘Jesus’ and you will not drown!

My Own 5 Favorite Words of Encouragement
1. Be realistic about your expectations to make your dream a reality.
When I feel disappointed or discouraged about how things are going with one of my goals or dreams then one thing that helps me and encourages me to keep going instead of giving up is this:
To tap into realistic expectations.
How do I do that?
Well, first I take a couple deep breaths to just calm down and center my mind.
Then I remind myself to not listen to:
- Advertising and voices close to me or further away in the world that promises me quick and super-easy results.
- The words and thoughts of perfectionism that sometimes bubble up within and outside of myself and that tell me that I must not make any mistakes or have any setbacks or failures.
And I remind myself to listen to people who have gone where I want to go. That’s where I find the realistic words of encouragement and reasonable expectations.
By listening to what they have to say in person or via books, podcasts, videos or websites I won’t get an exact step-by-step guide towards my goal.
But I’ll get a realistic and pretty accurate guidance on my journey.
Because I’ll get it from the people who already know what works and what does not (or works less well). And can tell me how I may sometimes stumble and fall and how much time my journey may realistically take.
2. It’s healthy and helpful to sometimes just let it out.
When I don’t feel like giving it one more shot or the path forward towards my goal simply seems insurmountable then one thing that truly helps is to just open up about it.
So I talk about it with my wife, a parent or a friend.
Sometimes I just vent and figure things out for myself as he or she listens.
At other times we discuss the issue at hand and he or she helps me to find a more grounded perspective again and to plan for how to move forward.
This renews my energy and motivation to keep going. And often helps me to find a smarter and better path towards where I want to go.
3. Remind yourself daily WHY you are doing what you are doing.
This is so easy to forget as you go through your daily life. And so you may lose your motivation and get off track.
Here’s one thing that helps me when I get stuck in such a place:
Find your top 3 reasons why you are doing what you are doing.
Maybe it’s to:
- Keep your family supported, safe and healthy.
- Live healthier and longer so you can watch your kids grow up or simply be able to experience more of life.
- Travel and see the world and meet the people in it.
Whatever your answers may be, write them down.
I prefer to do it on a piece of paper. Or as a daily reminder on my smart phone. If I add the reasons to a paper note then I put it where I cannot avoid seeing it every day. Like the bottom of my computer screen.
Having such a reminder helps me to stay on track and to keep moving forward even on days when I feel unmotivated, lazy or low.
4. Tell yourself: just for today!
Here’s a little tip that I learned from Brian Tracy more than 10 years ago.
I tell myself: Just for today I will XX!
Replace that XX with what you will do just for today. Such as going out running, eating a healthy and reasonably sized dinner or working on your essay for school.
I get two good benefits from doing this:
- The step or task feels lighter and my inner resistance to get it done lessens. Because now I’m just focusing on doing it today. And not also on the times I’ve done it in the past or the times I’m likely to do in the coming days, weeks and months.
- If I am creating a new habit then I’m reminded that I do not have to do this by using willpower for the rest of my life. After I have strung together 30 days or so of doing it – running, flossing or eating a healthy dinner – then the habit will have become pretty automatic and it’s just another normal part of my life.
5. It’s always darkest before the dawn.
Finally, one thought and word of encouragement that has helped me many times when things have been truly tough.
It has kept me from giving up and on track until things have turned around.
Because I have found it to be true.
When things have been at the lowest point in my life not matter if that was with my physical fitness, my dating life when I was single, my business or just my motivation and drive in life something has always happened.
Oftentimes simply because being at such a low point has forced me to make a change in how I go about things.
When you’re at such a point then don’t have much choice and you say to yourself: “enough is enough”. And then you are open to bigger changes and new perspectives.
But maybe also because life seems to have a sort of balance. If I just keep on going and keep on taking action.
Instead of doing nothing and just giving up.
Because if I keep on moving forward – step by small or sometimes tiny step – something positive always happens.
This way of thinking helps me to keep going when I don’t feel like it.
And it brings me some comfort even when things look pretty dark.
Life is a struggle that we all have to go through together.
