World of Dance was an American reality competition television series executive produced by Jennifer Lopez. The first two seasons were hosted by Jenna Dewan. The third season saw a change in hosts, as Scott Evans hosted season three and four.[1] The series features dance performers, including solo acts and larger groups, representing any style of dance, competing for a grand prize of $1 million.[2] The contestants are scored by judges Jennifer Lopez, Ne-Yo, and Derek Hough.
The series was created in partnership with the World of Dance enterprise, which produces dance competitions and dance lifestyle events in more than 25 countries, spanning the U.S., Europe, South America, and Asia. Videos captured from these events have driven more than 1 billion views online.
The series premiered on NBC on May 30, 2017. The fourth season premiered on May 26, 2020.[3]
In March 2021, the series was canceled after four seasons.[4]
Premise[edit]
Format changes[edit]
Season 2
While the format for season two remained relatively unchanged, there were a few slight alterations. Season 2 received a 16-episode order,[5] six more than the ten-episode first season. Additionally, this season, a fourth category, Junior Team, was added for acts under 18 with 5 or more members. The qualifier rounds are cut down from a two minutes to a one-minute routine. The Duels routines are cut down from two minutes to 75 seconds. The top three highest-scoring acts in The Cut from each division will move on to The Divisional Final, in season one it was just the top two. The Cut, Divisional and World Final rounds are cut down from a two minutes to a ’90 seconds’-routine. In The Cut and Divisional Final guest celebrities are assigned as mentors to each division. On World Final there are intermezzo shows. Season two by Les Twins, Keone & Mari (actually Mariel) Madrid, Kinjaz and Derek Hough.
Season 3
Original host Jenna Dewan left after the conclusion of season two which left the position open. Access Live co-host, Scott Evans took over as host in the third season. The required qualifier score to enter the duels increased from 80 to 85. The duels feature a redemption round where the Top 2 eliminated acts (in each division) with the highest score compete head to head for a second chance to advance to The Cuts. In the redemption, the 2 acts compete back to back to the same music. Afterwards, the judges vote to decide which act will advance.
In the Divisional Final, the judges pick one more act to advance to the World Final as a wild card.[6] In the World Final, each act performs once instead of twice.
The guest judge is removed this season.
Season 4
The team divisions have now been merged within the Junior and Upper divisions so There are now only 2 divisions; Junior Division and Upper Division.
The scoring system was abolished in favor of votes (this applies for Qualifiers and Duels).
In the Qualifiers, contestants need at least two yeses to proceed to the Duels. Judges may also cast a callback vote which gives the contestants a final chance to perform again to advance to the Duels
In the Duels, contestants no longer choose their opponent. Instead, the judges pick who they are battling and is revealed only upon entering the room. Moreover, a guest judge picks who will perform head-to-head in the Redemption Duels.
In the Cut, contestants are no longer separated by division, instead just some uppers and some juniors in each episode. Another point of interest may be the scores were used to figure out which 2 would make it to the world finals, what was unusual was the fact because of this, there was a chance all of the people in the world finals would be from the same division, also a high scoring team didn’t get through but a lower scoring one did, again it wouldn’t have been a big deal if the 2 leaderboards were combined.
Another change was they removed the Divisional Finals.
In the world finals, a change of knowing your score after your dance instead of all together at the end.
Show concept[edit]
In preparation for season two, handpicked competitors, being talented in any styles of dancing, from qualifying events around the nation and thousands of online submissions, are divided into four divisions: Junior (groups of 1 to 4, under 18), Upper (groups of 1 to 4, 18 and older), Junior Team (groups of 5+, under 18) and Upper Team (groups of 5+, 18 and older). In some cases dancers who didn’t apply were directly contacted by the producers or their agents. The below listed processes can change depending on the season being watched or recorded; however, this layout should fill all the general criteria.
The elimination process of the contestants are in four rounds:
- The Qualifiers — The contestants have to qualify with at least 85 points (80 in seasons 1 and 2) to make it to The Duels.
- The Duels — The contestants choose their opponent starting with the highest scorer from the qualifiers. If the number of contestants in a division is uneven, the last duel will be competed by the three remaining opponents that were unpicked previously. In season 3, they added the redemption where the top 2 eliminated acts go against each other. The winner of the duel is the contestant/s with the highest score who then move on to The Cut.
- The Cut — Mentors are assigned to each division to prepare the contestants for their performances. The top three scoring acts in each division move on to Divisional Final.
- Divisional Final — The mentors still support the contestants from each division. The top scoring act in each division will become division champion and move on to the World Final.[7] It went public later that the division champions got US$50,000 prize money each 3 months after last show airing. Starting in Season 3, the judges send one more act to the World Final as a wild card.
In the World Final all four division champions and one wild card will compete for the US$1,000,000 grand prize. In Season 1 and 2 every act performed twice in two separate rounds with the final score being determined by the average score of both rounds. Starting in Season 3, each act only performed once. The contestant(s) with the highest final score being crowned World of Dance champion and winning the US$1,000,000 grand prize.
Scoring[edit]
The judges are scoring in 5 categories. Each category is worth 20 points, with a perfect score of 100:
- Performance (20 points):
- Effort: How many different elements put into the routine without overloading or rushing through it. What was the whole effort to dance the performance by the act.
- Personality: How characters and personality put into the performance, in the sense of acting to stimulate emotions by the audience, telling a story or framing pictures.
- Technique (20 points):
- Transitions: How smooth and elegant the transitions from move to move were without lacking a performance moment.
- Cleanness: How synchronized, ordered by a pattern, precise and committed the movements were within the act.
- Execution: How flawless the execution of the performance by the act was to the performance song.
- Choreography (20 points):
- Difficulty: How difficult it was to perform the figures and movements by the act from judges point of view.
- Musicality: How well pictures, figures and movements were choreographed to the sound and beat of the performance song.
- Tricks: Are unexpected show elements included by properties, clothing or the bodies of the dancers and how well was it done.
- Creativity (20 points):
- Originality: How unique, new, fresh and interesting was the performance.
- Artistic Choices: What styles of dancing were shown and merged. How well was it done regarding basic dance styles and style culture, e.g. costumes, shoes. The performance song and the use of properties are artistic choices as well. How well did they fit to the performance.
- Dynamics: How energizing and powerful the performance was and how much action was on stage.
- Presentation (20 points):
- Crowd Appeal: How the crowd around the show stage reacted to the performance.
- Impact: How memorable, influential and worth talking about it later the performance was.

Development[edit]
Jennifer Lopez, who serves as both executive producer and judge, felt that the series would be a return to her roots; Lopez had achieved early fame as a member of In Living Color‘s dance crew, The Fly Girls. She explained that dance had been her «first form of artistic expression», and that the series «reminded me of all the reasons why I love dance and why I wanted to do this in the first place».[2]
The series premiere was originally scheduled for May 8, 2017 (as a lead-out for The Voice), but was pushed back to May 30, 2017, to serve as a lead-out for the season premiere of America’s Got Talent.[8][9] On June 29, 2017, NBC renewed the series for a second season,[10] which premiered on May 29, 2018—once again complementing the next season of America’s Got Talent.[11]
In May 2018, prior to its season 2 premiere, World of Dance was renewed for a third season; instead of airing as a summer series, it aired at midseason, premiering on February 26, 2019, before it was moved to a new Sunday night timeslot.[12][13][14] Host Jenna Dewan announced that she would step down from her role as host for season 3. She was eventually replaced by Access Hollywood co-host Scott Evans.[15] The fourth season premiered on May 26, 2020.[16]
On March 15, 2021, the series was canceled after four seasons.[4]

World of Dance first premiered on NBC on May 30, 2017 led by extraordinary dance superstars Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough, and NE-YO as the judges. Jenna Dewan hosted the first two seasons followed by Scott Evans hosting the third and the fourth season. The World of Dance Winners of each season took home the title of the “Best Dancer in the world!” and the grand prize of $1 million!
All the Winners of ‘World of Dance’
The Les Twins, Season 1
The Les Twins took home $1 million in prize money and became the first-ever winners of World of Dance. The French hip-hop-dancing twins Laurent Nicolas and Larry Nicolas Bourgeois wowed the audiences and judges. They performed unbeatable in-sync isolation movements and quality dance performances week after week. But the win did not come easy to them. Just before the Divisional Finals, Laurent suffered an injury to his right leg, which immediately put Les Twins’ at a disadvantage. That didn’t stop them.
Instead of dropping out, Laurent danced in the wheelchair and went on to make it to the finals performing on Kygo’s “Stole the Show” and “Scream” by Michael and Janet Jackson to become the winners.
Not to mention the Les Twins have toured and performed for celebrities like Beyonce and Jay Z on and they are only adding more to their list!
The Lab, Season 2
The Labs came back stronger than ever in the second season after getting eliminated in season one. Their jaw-dropping flips and incredible stunts made them the winners of Season 2!
The Hip Hop crew performed a neon-heavy Missy Elliot dance and a groovy lyrical hip-hop number to John Mayer’s “Waiting On The World to Change” groovin the audience with their charismatic moves.
The Lab continues to kill it on the dance floor and they performed in Times Square on New Year’s Eve.
The Kings, Season 3
Earning the perfect score, The Kings, a hip-hop group from India, won Season 3 of World of Dance with their impressive moves! The 14-member Bollywood Hip-Hop squad consistently racked up high scores during its run on the show with high-flying tricks and amazing stunts.
After 12 weeks of incredible dance offs and synchronized flips, the Kings took home the $1 million top prize.
They are currently working on some international projects. Including their shows, workshop tour and brand collaborations in India and other parts of the world. They are also working on an upcoming film about their crew.
MDC, Season 4
The winner of Season 4 of World of Dance was MDC 3, the only junior division competitors left in the competition. The trio first caught the judges’ interest with their stunningly emotional performance for their audition and in the duels.
The trio was known for their storytelling ability, and they used that in their finale performance. They performed to “I Surrender” by Celine Dion and mesmerized the world with their storytelling abilities with their push and pull movements.
The group has been dancing together for years, having danced their first trio in 2014 and plans to become professional dancers for celebrities like Beyonce!
World of Dance is cancelled for Season 5 by NBC
While these teams will remain the winner World of Dance will not live to dance another day, with the Jennifer Lopez-produced competition series not returning for Season 5 on NBC after ending its fourth season in August 2020 due to low ratings and falling numbers of viewers.

In 2017, World of Dance launched World of Dance Digital Lab, a full-service, in-house production studio connecting brands to youth culture. Services include branded entertainment, influencer marketing, content strategy and production, targeted media distribution, and experiential activations.
World of Dance CompetitionsEdit
The first World of Dance competition was held in 2008. Since then, the brand has expanded to competitions in more than 25 countries. Each year, World of Dance Qualifier events are held around the world (40 internationally, 15 in the U.S.), bringing together street and urban dance crews to compete for two titles: winner of the Upper Division (for 18 years and older) and winner of the Youth Division (17 years old or younger). The winners of each category are invited to compete at World of Dance Finals event, where they compete for the world title.
World of Dance competitions are notable for their scoring approach. Each competition is judged by a five-person panel, usually composed of dance celebrities, industry professionals, and influencers. Using an Olympic-style approach, competitors are judged according to five criteria: Performance, Technique, Choreography, Creativity, and Presentation. Each category is worth 20 points, for a total of 100 points. Once all judges have inputted their score, the highest and lowest scores are removed, and the final score is the average score of the remaining three. Those with a score above 85 move on to finals.
In addition to the competition, World of Dance events also include performances from industry talent (non-competing), dance crews, choreographers, and freestylers, as well as live battles, appearances by industry influences, music, live art, vendors, and more.

World of Dance Television ShowEdit
In 2017, the NBC premiered World of Dance, a 10-episode dance competition program produced by Universal Television Alternative Studio in association with Nuyorican Productions and World of Dance. Executive producing are Jennifer Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, Kris Curry, Matilda Zoltowski, David Gonzalez and Matthew Everitt. The show features celebrity judges Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough, Ne-Yo, and host/mentor Jenna Dewan-Tatum, along with 50 of the world’s best dancers and dance teams competing for a $1 million prize—the largest prize of any dance competition show.
As Lopez told the New York Times, “My whole goal with this show was to create an opportunity and a venue for dancers to actually be the stars,” Ms. Lopez said, and to get to do something they rarely have a chance to do: “really make some money.”
World of Dance contestants were picked from qualifying events around the nation and online submissions. Contestants are divided into three divisions:
- Junior: Any size act, 17 years old and under
- Upper: Groups of 1–4, 18 and older
- Team: Groups of 5+, 18 and older
In each episode, dancers compete before the judges and are scored according to World of Dance scoring criteria: Performance, Technique, Choreography, Creativity, and Presentation. Each category is worth 20 points, for a total of 100 points. The show consists of five rounds:
- The Qualifiers: In each round of the Qualifiers, the dance acts perform a 2-minute routine in front of the judges and a live audience. They are judged according to criteria, and only those who receive a combined total score of 80 or higher move forward.
- The Duels: Acts are paired against each other, and the highest scoring act moves on to the next round. In each round of The Duels, two acts in the same division compete for a spot in the next round. In each division, the acts with the top qualifying scores choose their opponents, then both acts perform back-to-back, receiving feedback from the judges. After each performance, the judges score them. Unlike the Qualifiers, only the final combined total score for each act is shown. The act with the highest score at the end of the duel moves on to the next round; the other faces immediate elimination.
- The Cut: In The Cut, the 15 remaining acts compete for three[1] spots in each of their divisions.
- Divisional Finals: Two acts in each division compete against each other, winners in each division move on to the next round.
- World Finals: In the World Final, the final 3 acts, one from each division, compete to win the one million dollar prize.
The show premiered May 30, 2016 at 10/9 central on NBC, debuting to 9.8 million viewers. It was renewed for a second season in June 2017.

The judging lineup of Lopez, Hough, and Ne-Yo was announced in November 2016. The judges were selected both for their dance experience, as well as their passion for spotlighting dancers.
Meredith Ahr, President of Universal Television Alternative Studio, called them ““three of the most accomplished dancers of their generation.” Lopez told Entertainment Weekly, “We all love dance, we all are performers, and we all are competitive, which you have to be in this business. We come from different backgrounds, so we bring those sensibilities.”
Critical ReceptionEdit
Marketed as “the biggest dance competition in the world,” the show garnered national attention, particularly for its wide style of performances and popular performers. Les Twins (Beyoncé’s former backup dancers) made headlines in USA Today, which wrote, «Although the audience was cheering along to Les Twins’ fierce moves the entire performance, their routine’s intense ending made judge Jennifer Lopez jump out of her seat in shock.»[20]
Similarly, young contemporary dancer Diana Pombo’s first performance made Lopez tear up, while others like Luka & Jenalyn, Fik-Shun, and Nick Daniels also wowed the crowd.
As USA Today wrote, “What the show also has going for it is the sense of inclusion that you don’t always find on reality TV. The show celebrates the people and cultures represented on its stage, from an Asian-American dance team that takes its inspiration from martial arts to a young Colombian-American girl from Miami who pauses to tell “Miss JLo” that she’s her idol. She cried, Lopez cried, and you’ll probably cry, too.”

World of Dance was a reality dance competition series executive produced by Jennifer Lopez aka J-Lo.[1]This is where dancers from all around the world compete for $1,000,000.
Rules[]
Dancers from all around the world, divided into different categories compete for $1,000,000.
In season one, there were three categories: Junior (17 and younger), Upper (18 and older) & Team (18 and older and consisting of five or more members). Beginning in season two, the team of any kind category was removed and both the Junior & Upper categories were split into two groups. Each regular group features dancers with 1 to 4 members and the team groups from each category features dancers with five or more members.
Each season, the dancers will try to impress the judges in five rounds of competition. They will receive points based on five different categories: performance, technique, choreography, creativity & presentation. Each category is worth up to 20 points for a possible total of 100 points from each judge, and the judges’ totals average out in the end.
Round 1: The Qualifiers[]
In the first round, the dancers fight for a place in the next round. Their average total scores must be at least 85 points (80 in the first two seasons) to qualify.
Round 2: Duels[]
In this round, the survivors of round one go head to head in their respective categories, with the highest scorer(s) from the Qualifiers going first and making the choice of who to face. In each head to head duel, the dancer(s) with the most points will move on to The Cut round. The scores will not be revealed until after both acts have had their turn. In one week, one round pitted three acts against each other.
Round 3: The Cut[]
The survivors now compete for six/twelve spots in the Division Final (two for each division in season one and three from each division starting in season two). Each division will have a leaderboard and the two/three acts above the red line at the end of the round will advance to the Division Final.

This will determine the winners of the divisions.
Each of the acts will dance again and the act with the biggest average score in each of the divisions advances to the World Final.
World Final[]
This will determine the $1,000,000 winner.
Each winning divisional act will dance twice and the act with the total average score will win the $1,000,000.

World of Dance Competitions

Этим летом прошёл очередной чемпионат World of Dance — легендарное событие, о котором знают танцоры во всем мире.
Впервые столь масштабное событие посетили девушки из команды AGNY. Dance.ru же продолжает подводить итоги лета, и сегодня представляет интервью с руководителем команды Анастасией Юрасовой.
— Вы впервые посетили столь масштабное и, пожалуй, одно из известнейших чемпионатов в Мире. Поделитесь эмоциями! О чем думали, когда выходили на сцену, и какие чувства остались после выступления?
— Конечно, мы волновались. Мне кажется, волнение есть всегда, на каких бы чемпионатах мы не выступали. Но тут оно было с нами гораздо дольше — с периода подготовки и получения виз до полета в США и, конечно, до самого дня чемпионата. Кроме волнения был азарт — справиться с трудностями, максимально сконцентрироваться и не упустить ни одной мелочи, приготовиться и выступить максимально сильно, показать наш стиль и достойно представить Россию.
И было просто интересно: как все устроено в США и на таких чемпионатах. Огромное пространство конференц-центра, где проходил финал World of Dance, отличалось от других площадок, где мы были раньше. Огромные залы, сцена, большая тусовка танцоров, много зрителей, незабываемая атмосфера — это все завораживало и, если честно, даже не до конца верилось, что нам предстоит выйти на эту сцену. Хотелось, чтобы этот день не кончался, хотелось запомнить каждую мелочь и свои ощущения. И как это всегда бывает, все пролетело за одну секунду — особенно наше выступление. После него нам стало понятно: хочется еще здесь оказаться, во что бы то ни стало. Так что сразу появились планы на 2018.
— Как вы решились на поездку? Уверены, об этом мечтают многие команды и танцоры, но получается у единиц, и это недешевое удовольствие для российских танцоров — выступать на чемпионате за границей.
— После удачного осеннего сезона 2016 года мы осмелели и поставили амбициозную цель на 2017. Настраивались и морально, и материально, делали ставку на новое шоу, которое с первого выступления «зашло». У нас была мечта, план, который сработал, поддержка танцоров и близких, куча энергии и желания.
А еще нам здорово помогли новые друзья — всем известная Группа Компаний Bosco di Ciliegi, которая выступила спонсором нашей поездки. Спасибо им, что поверили в нас и помогли организовать поездку в США, что поддерживают спорт и красоту — здесь мы точно единомышленники!
— Со стрип-пластикой от России еще никто не выступал на чемпионате. Как приняли вас «коллеги по цеху»?
— Пожалуй, как раз желание показать наш стиль и было одним из сильнейших мотиваторов в этой затее. Когда-то Frame Up Strip не знали в России, но у нас получилось это изменить. А теперь мы решили выйти на международный уровень — здесь есть место стрипу, мы уверены.
На чемпионате мы не остались незамеченными — мимо команды девушек на высоких каблуках с необычной партерной хореографией никто не мог пройти, оставшись равнодушным. Во время подготовки с нами фотографировались, к нам подходили поддержать и пожелать удачи. И после выступления мы тоже слышали теплые отзывы. И хотя мы ничего не заняли, убедились, что мы западным танцорам интересны и что надо приезжать и показывать им стрип почаще.
— Сколько времени ушло на подготовку? Что стало для вас самым сложным в этот период?
— Мы начали готовиться к поездке с самого отборочного тура в Санкт-Петербурге, когда стало понятно, что точно едем. Мы стали разбираться в правилах чемпионата, общаться с организаторами, заниматься визой и поиском партнеров. Визы стали самым сложным на пути к World of Dance Finals — четырем из нас визы не достались, и это не могло не сказаться на нашем боевом духе.
Поэтому неделя до отъезда в США прошла достаточно сумбурно — только тогда был понятен финальный состав тех, кто поедет, и номер нужно было переразводить «на лету». Но зато теперь мы знаем о таком нюансе и в следующий раз учтем этот момент.
— До этого выступления вы принимали участие в соревнования за границей?
— Если говорить про командные выходы, то до этого мы показывали наш стиль только на конкурсе в рамках большого танцевального события WHES Dance Convention в Италии в 2015 году, где попали в топ-5. Формат был другой — небольшая сцена, — не стандартные большие команды, а собранные из тех, кто приехал на мастер-классы. Поэтому масштабы сравнивать не будем. Зато уже тогда мы поняли, что Frame Up имеет все шансы стать мощным и любимым танцорами стилем и за рубежом. После выступления у нас была возможность пообщаться с судьями и услышать одобрение таких хореографов, как Brian Friedman и Mecnun Giasar. Вместе с тем мы поняли, что некоторых смущает откровенность нашего стиля и костюмов. И, как вы можете заметить, по нашим последним шоу, это необязательная составляющая Frame Up Strip, хотя без эпатажности и женской красоты, конечно, в у нас никуда).
— Хотели бы попробовать еще раз? Какой чемпионат собираетесь покорять следующий?
— Конечно, хотели бы! И обязательно еще куда-нибудь поедем. У нас есть определенные планы, обязательно поделимся, когда всё получится!
