Throughout the past few years, our country has experienced plenty of grieving. There have been so many terror attacks, mass shootings, random acts of violence throughout the entire world, and a pandemic that has affected us all deeply.
Due to all of this, many people are grieving the loss of a loved one or simply the seeming loss of humanity.
These same people, including you if you are one of them, may feel inspired by some sympathy quotes and words of comfort.
RELATED: What To Say When Someone Dies
Sometimes knowing what to say or do for a person who lost a loved one is very difficult and words of sympathy don’t come naturally to a lot of people. You may be worried about saying the wrong thing or saying something that doesn’t help. It can be hard to help someone who is grieving, even when you are trying to find comforting words too.
If you have trouble finding the words or don’t know what to do, sometimes words of comfort and bible quotes can help us help others in times of need.
As long as you understand that sometimes all you can do is offer a shoulder to cry on and maybe some sympathy notes, you will be able to help anyone in a time of sorrow.
There isn’t always a specific thing to say or the right sympathy gifts to bring to someone who is missing a family member, pet, or friend, but comfort quotes can offer us ideas when we encounter those moments.

When news that someone you know has died hits social circles, you may be wondering what is the appropriate response to that news. Should you pick up the phone and call? Should you send fresh flowers or another sympathy plant? Is it OK to send a text offering condolences? How do you comfort someone who is grieving through text? And, how do you console someone whom you only talk to online?
It’s acceptable to send a text if it makes sense for you to do so. If you only talk online or through text, there’s nothing wrong with responding to the news by sending a text. Finding the right words to say to someone whose loved one has died is never easy. Below you will find a few examples of what to say and when it’s appropriate to say it.
Other Ways to Share a Comforting Message
Sending a comforting text or direct message can be a simple and meaningful way to connect with someone who needs support. But you can also use the messages suggested in this article to share a message of comfort in other ways. Here are some ideas for ways to support a loved one with a short message.
» MORE: Create a tribute to your loved one and raise funds to help with practical needs, like meal delivery and childcare. Start your fundraiser.
Write an online memorial tribute
If someone has passed away, check to see if the family has set up an online memorial and possibly a memorial fundraiser. If they have, you can write one of these comforting messages in a tribute message to the departed person. If the family hasn’t yet set up a memorial page, you might be able to help them do so using Cake’s online memorial tool. Helping with this process can be a meaningful way to lend support and comfort during a difficult time.
Give a card
Sometimes, sending a physical card or letter can offer more support to someone who’s grieving or in need of comfort. You can hand-write one of the messages below in a beautiful sympathy card like this one.
Give a gift
A sympathy card or simple note can also be paired with a thoughtful gift to offer comfort to your loved one. Consider attaching your comforting message to a bouquet of fresh flowers or a sympathy gift basket.

Comforting Texts to Send to a Family Member
When one of your family members suffers death in their immediate family, it’s a loss that hits close to home. You might not know what to say to express the sorrow that you’re feeling. You might think that giving them space during this time is the best thing to do. It’s not uncommon to pull away from your loved one.
You might not know how to process death and think that nothing you can say will make them feel better. Yet, the opposite is true. When everyone else has moved on, your words of condolences can have a real impact. A shoulder to lean on during this time goes a long way in helping your family member process their grief. There are several things you can say that will leave a lasting impression.
Here are words to comfort someone who lost a loved one over text:
- «I’m sorry to hear the news of your brother’s passing. Please accept my deepest regrets for your loss.»
- «I was deeply saddened to hear of your mom’s passing. She was such a great inspiration to me. Please let me know how I can help you during this difficult time.»
- «Please accept my heartfelt condolences to you and your family on your uncle’s death. I’m sure that his memory will forever live on in your hearts.»
- «I’m sorry for your loss. My deepest sympathy goes out to you and your family.»
- «I am sorry for the loss of your dear Fluffy, Aunt Mary. I cannot imagine the pain you are going through right now. Please let me know how I can help you during this difficult time.»
1. “I’m sorry to hear the news of your brother’s passing. Please accept my deepest regrets for your loss.”
When expressing your condolences by text, consider the type of relationship you have with your family members.
Decide whether it’s appropriate to follow up with an in-person visit, or if texting is enough. Depending on your relationship, it may be better to offer support in person.
2. “I was deeply saddened to hear of your mom’s passing. She was such a great inspiration to me. Please let me know how I can help you during this difficult time.”
This type of text acknowledges news of death and has a call to action. When a death occurs, there are many end-of-life matters to attend to.
With this message, you are letting your family members know that you have heard the news, how their loved one has impacted your life, and what she meant to you. You’re also offering your support when needed.
3. “Please accept my heartfelt condolences to you and your family on your uncle’s death. I’m sure that his memory will forever live on in your hearts.»
This condolence message doesn’t need to offer any further call to action. Unless you were close to the uncle, a text message is enough.
4. “I’m sorry for your loss. My deepest sympathy goes out to you and your family.”
When a family member has suffered a loss of a person whom you didn’t know or didn’t know well, a simple message expressing your sympathy, like «sorry for your loss,» is both sufficient and respectful in honoring the death of their loved one.
5. “I am sorry for the loss of your dear Fluffy, Aunt Mary. I cannot imagine the pain you are going through right now. Please let me know how I can help you during this difficult time.”
Acknowledging the impact of the death of a beloved pet on Aunt Mary may be able to help during this time. It honors the bond between a pet and its owner while also offering support as you would with the loss of human life. You can even give a pet sympathy gift to provide some comfort as that person grieves.
Comforting Texts to Send to a Close Friend
When a close friend has a death in the family, it’s sometimes difficult to approach him with the right words. Dealing with death takes the fun out of friendship, and your response to the news will depend on your communication style. A text message is generally appropriate while avoiding the use of emojis.
A simple “sorry for your loss” text gets the conversation started. It expresses regret and tells him that you’re thinking of him. Consider following up your text with a phone call or visiting with a sympathy gift basket or care package.
Here are words to comfort a closed friend who lost a loved one over text:
- «My deepest sympathies go out to you, my friend. May you find comfort and peace during this difficult time. Know that I’m here for you.»
- «I heard the news, my friend. I can’t even begin to understand what you are feeling, but I want you to know that I’m here for you. I’m sending you my prayers and condolences. I’ll be checking in on you to see how you are doing.»
- «I was deeply saddened to hear about your brother’s passing. He was like a brother to me. Please offer my sincerest condolences to your family. You have my deepest sympathy.»
- «I’m sorry for your loss. Please accept my sincerest sympathy.»
- «I’m so sorry to hear this sad news. I’m thinking of you and your family at this time. Please let me know how I can help.»
6. “My deepest sympathies go out to you, my friend. May you find comfort and peace during this difficult time. Know that I’m here for you.”
These words let your friend know that you are suffering along with him. Offering your support lets him know that you are reliable in his time of need.
Words of support and encouragement offer some of the greatest comforts to someone who is grieving.
7. “I heard the news, my friend. I can’t even begin to understand what you are feeling, but I want you to know that I’m here for you. I’m sending you my prayers and condolences. I’ll be checking in on you to see how you are doing.”
Your friend might not be ready to talk to you when the news first hits, but they need to know that you are available whenever they are ready.
Do what you say you will, by following up at appropriate intervals to check up on your friend.
8. “I was deeply saddened to hear about your brother’s passing. He was like a brother to me. Please offer my sincerest condolences to your family. You have my deepest sympathy.”
This type of text message honors the death of their loved one, offers condolences to the family as a whole, and also adds a personal touch about what the person who died meant to you.
It’s important not to make this about you, so carefully consider the length of your message and words you choose.
9. “I’m sorry for your loss. Please accept my sincerest sympathy.”
Sometimes less is more. When you don’t know what to say to your friend, a text acknowledging what they’re going through is enough when the message is sincere and heartfelt.
10. “I’m so sorry to hear this sad news. I’m thinking of you and your family at this time. Please let me know how I can help.”
When you offer condolences to someone you know and love, it’s always more meaningful when you attach the offer to help in some way.
Their immediate needs may not be clear to them just yet, but knowing that you have offered to help, and following up with that offer, can lessen their burden during this time.
Comforting Texts to Send to Someone Who Lost a Partner or Spouse
When deciding what message to text to a person who has lost their partner or spouse, keep in mind that they’ve just lost a big part of their support system. They’ve yet to realize the impact of the loss on their everyday lives, or how their future lives have changed. Be especially mindful of the grief they’ll experience in the coming days, weeks, and months.
If it’s your partner or spouse who lost a loved one, it’s also appropriate to send text messages throughout the day to let them know that you’re there for them. A text message offering love and support may come through when a pick me up is needed. You may also want to send a text message to celebrate the life of their loved one on their death anniversary.
Here are words to comfort a partner or spouse who lost a loved one over text:
- «I heard the news about your husband’s passing. Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. He was a great friend to me, and I will forever hold him in my heart.»
- «I am deeply saddened by the loss of your wife. She was a wonderful woman. I will check in on you later to see what you may need.»
- «Please accept my condolences on the passing of your partner. It is an honor to have known such a great person, and I will truly miss them.»
- «I was thinking about your husband on this day of his death anniversary. He has certainly made a positive impact on my life. I hope you are doing well.»
- «Sending you thoughts of love and prayer to let you know that I am here for you.”
11. “I heard the news about your husband’s passing. Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. He was a great friend to me, and I will forever hold him in my heart.”
Social media spreads news fast to everyone connected. If you’ve heard about a death through social media, let the person grieving know how you heard the news.
Assure them that you’re responding privately, and offer your support. If a condolence board has been set up, it’s okay to post a less personal message. Consider posting only after you’ve sent a private message.
12. “I am deeply saddened by the loss of your wife. She was a wonderful woman. I will check in on you later to see what you may need.”
This type of message not only comforts the bereaved but reassures them that you may be stopping by later to help with whatever is needed.
Consider bringing a hot meal and extra home-cooked meals, and maybe even some good coffee or tea to sustain them over the next few days.
13. «Please accept my condolences on the passing of your partner. It is an honor to have known such a great person, and I will truly miss them.”
Condolence messages that are gender-neutral respect the intimacy of the relationship without being too forward in assumptions or leaving a huge question needing to be answered.
14. “I was thinking about your husband on this day of his death anniversary. He has certainly made a positive impact on my life. I hope you are doing well.”
Reminding the person who has lost a loved one that you still hold them in your thoughts and prayers may be one of the most supportive gestures you can make.
While most people have moved on with their lives, you are letting them know that you still remember and honor their loved one who has died.
15. “Sending you thoughts of love and prayer to let you know that I am here for you.”
This simple message can be very impactful when sent at the appropriate time in the grieving process.
It’s not only acceptable but encouraged to send these types of messages to your partner or spouse to let them know that you love and support them.

Comforting Texts to Send to an Acquaintance or Colleague
Communicating condolences to an acquaintance or colleague can sometimes seem awkward and uncomfortable. These simple phrases below will help you bridge that gap between feeling awkward and offering genuine words of sympathy to someone you may not know very well.
Here are words to comfort an acquaintance or colleague who lost a loved one over text:
- «I heard about your loss. May you find comfort and peace during this difficult time. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.»
- «I can’t imagine what it feels like to have lost a child. I am at a loss for words to say. Please know that I have you and your family in my prayers, and I’m here for you.»
- «Please accept my condolences on the loss of your pet, Burrito. He was always a joy to have around the office and will be missed.»
- «I heard about your dad’s passing. I’m so sorry about your loss. I lost my dad a few years back. If you need someone to talk to, I’m here for you.»
- «Please accept my condolences on the loss of your spouse. I’m sure that this is a very difficult time for you. My thoughts and prayers are with you.»
- «It is terrible to hear about your loss. I express my sincere sympathy to you and your family.»
16. “I heard about your loss. May you find comfort and peace during this difficult time. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.”
When you hardly know a person, it may sound insincere to offer your deepest sympathies or to say that you feel their pain.
It is appropriate to send an abbreviated message of sympathy with a genuine offer to help. You may offer to pick up the slack at work, help them deliver a project, or fill in for them at work.
17. “I can’t imagine what it feels like to have lost a child. I am at a loss for words to say. Please know that I have you and your family in my prayers, and I’m here for you.”
You don’t have to know someone very well to understand that losing a child can be one of the most devastating things a parent can go through.
Letting them know that you can’t express the level of loss they must be feeling is acceptable, and it is much better than ignoring the death.
18. “Please accept my condolences on the loss of your pet, Burrito. He was always a joy to have around the office and will be missed.”
When your colleague loses a beloved pet, they may be mourning the loss as if they have lost a child. It’s important to recognize this loss and acknowledge it with words of sympathy and condolences.
19. “I heard about your dad’s passing. I’m so sorry about your loss. I lost my dad a few years back. If you need someone to talk to, I’m here for you.”
Offering specific and relatable support to an acquaintance lets them know that you genuinely care about them, and have something of value to add to them during this time of pain and bereavement.
You may want to follow up with another message a few days later to let your colleague know that you were sincere in your offer of support.
20. “Please accept my condolences on the loss of your spouse. I’m sure that this is a very difficult time for you. My thoughts and prayers are with you.”
This message validates the loss and the grief that your acquaintance must be experiencing without sounding too pushy or waiting for a response from him.
21. “It is terrible to hear about your loss. I express my sincere sympathy to you and your family.”
Again, this message is short and clear to the point. This is especially appropriate when you don’t have a close relationship with your colleague.

What do you say to comfort someone who lost a loved one?
Our condolences.
You have my deepest sympathy on the loss of your father.
Sure, those things are appropriate to say, and even need to be said. But the mourner will hear variations of condolences and sympathy so many times that it almost loses meaning.
Today, we want to explore what the mourner is experiencing and let the reality of grief inform the words of comfort you offer.
At the end of the article, we’ll have plenty of sweet, heartwarming, and meaningful quotes for you to contemplate sharing at the right time.
But let’s first consider this: Is it really even possible for your words to offer comfort to someone who is grieving?
Words of Comfort After Loss
Your grieving friend or family member is going through so much right now. The grieving process takes time and effort from the mourner. Can anything you say even make a difference?
Yes. Absolutely.
It might not feel like it. You won’t cure their grief, or provide an instant salve for the wounds of their heart. You might not even feel like your words have had any effect at all. But your words matter – a lot.
The grieving person has an internal monologue going on. It is very, very easy for that jumble of thoughts and questions to go downhill.
Why me? Why him/her?
I can’t go on.
Will I ever feel anything again?
I don’t want to do anything.
Is this normal?
I just want to die.
Am I messed up? I’m too emotional. (Or…) I’m not emotional enough.
Did this happen because of how messed up I am?
If the internal monologue is all they have, it will be very difficult for them to grieve properly, process their emotions, and begin to clear their head and work through to a place of healing.
Your words can help by turning that monologue into something more of a dialogue. Outside input can break through those cycles that often lead to depression and stagnation.
What is the grieving person thinking and feeling right now?
Grief is an uncomfortable feeling. Your loss and pain can hit very deeply.
Some people have described it as feeling like “being cut in two.” It might feel as if you have lost a piece of yourself. It is natural and normal to grieve and to hurt when someone you love dies.
Some major emotions might be:
- Anger. This might be anger at God, with your loved one, with yourself, or with the doctors. Why didn’t God intervene on your loved one’s behalf? Did you do everything possible to help your loved one? Why didn’t the doctors do more? These are all valid questions, and furthermore, it is “Ok” to be angry.
- Loneliness. The loss of a spouse is devastating. You may not just be losing your spouse, but you may lose friendships as well. You may lose relationships with “couples.” You may also lose friendships with the spouse’s side of the family.
- Regret. You may feel regret for all of the time that you have lost with your loved one. The years that you planned for that will never happen.
Elisabeth Kübler-Ross referenced five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The grieving person may or may not go through all of these stages of grief. She may revisit certain stages, skip some, or experience other “stages” (some experts say there are up to twelve).
As her friend, it is important for you to know that all of these feelings are normal and acceptable.
What words of comfort are best for those thoughts and feelings?
What else can be said besides, “I love you, I am here for you, or it’s alright to feel that way?” Try one of these phrases.
For loneliness:
- Can I come by and visit with you?
- Let me take you to lunch (coffee, etc).
- I’m turning off my phone’s “sleep” mode. Call me anytime, day or night.
- I am going to come over and cook dinner for you.
- Would you like to come to stay at our home for a few nights?
When your friend or loved one needs support:
- I don’t know how you feel, but I am here to help you in any way I can.
- I am grieving with you.
- How can I help you? Let me know what you need.
- Take all the time you need.
- I am out running errands. Can I do anything for you? Pick up groceries, pick up your kids or even run to the post office?

When someone we know suffers a loss or is going through a difficult situation, we’re often not sure what to say. Sometimes we ramble or, worse, say nothing and avoid the person. But that doesn’t help at all, and it leaves us dragging around a ton of guilt…and possibly isolating someone we love.
So, how do we show we care? While every heartache is unique to the person going through it, there are universal emotions many of us experience during times of grief and loss. Especially when those we care about are hurting, genuine empathy can guide our words and actions: Try thoughtfully considering what kindnesses would speak to you if you were in a similar situation.
Here are some examples of comforting words to think about the next time you’re struggling with how to help someone going through tough times.
Someone you love is struggling with addiction.
TRY THIS: “I want you to know I’m in this with you. We’re going to fight this together.” Maybe your friend’s child is the one suffering or being treated at a rehabilitation center: You might say, “I care about you and am here to listen if you need to talk.” One more thing—addiction is a sensitive topic. So keeping your conversations confidential will show your friend you respect their privacy and will give them reassurance to express their feelings freely.
AVOID THIS: Offering specific advice. Unless you’re sitting in a counselor’s office and you’re the counselor, kindly keep your opinions to yourself. A few other no-nos:
“Have you tried quitting cold turkey?” or “Just put your mind to it. That’s what I did when I gave up chocolate.” It’s very rare that comparisons from your personal experience will help, especially with something as serious as addiction. One way to look at it: Think about something you love that would be really hard to give up. Then, multiply it by 1,000. Then, consider this battle a matter of life and death. That’s a small glimpse of the pain of addiction.
SHOW YOU CARE: Visit your friend whenever possible or appropriate. Or offer to drive them to the rehab facility to see their child. If they’d like, wait in the lobby as an extra force of support. Take them to lunch afterward or send them home with a care package of comforting things: a cozy throw, a super huggable stuffed animal, some chamomile tea.
Your friend is suffering from mental health issues.
TRY THIS: “You are very important to me and nothing will ever change that.” Or “You’re a wonderful person and I wish I could take away this pain from your heart.” Or simply, “Can I give you a hug?” These quotes also work for a parent of someone struggling with depression, bipolar disorder, or another mental health challenge. Many moms and dads feel ostracized in what is oftentimes a lifelong battle, and saying something kind can make a huge difference.
AVOID THIS: “Are you off your meds again?” Or “Cheer up! The sun’s out!” Or “I don’t understand why you can’t just snap out of it.” Let’s pause and remember that a mental health diagnosis is a medical struggle, not just a little bit of sadness or eccentric behavior. This is a time to practice being judgment-free and accepting of each other.
SHOW YOU CARE: Take your friend out for coffee or drive an exhausted parent to visit their child at a mental health center. Be present for someone who most likely feels very alone. One more tip: Do the conscientious thing when talking to a parent with a troubled child. If you have the perfect kid, avoid humble bragging in front of them. It can feel heartbreaking for a parent whose child may never get better.
Your sister just got a worrying diagnosis for her child.
TRY THIS: “I’m so sorry. I want to be here for you, in whatever way helps you the best.” You could even say, “I’m going to be checking on you more,” then commit to calling or making plans with her on a regular basis.
AVOID THIS: “They’re going to be okay.” Or “My friend’s son got the same thing and he’s totally fine now.” Sadly, as much as we want to predict a happy prognosis, it’s out of our control. Instead, keep that hope inside your heart and your caring will shine through.
SHOW YOU CARE: Drop off some groceries at their front door or order pizza and get it delivered. Pull in their garbage cans on trash day. Send a gift to the family, like movie passes or bring a special treat for the children. Any little thing that can lighten their burden will be much appreciated.
Your brother is going through problems with his adult child.
TRY THIS: “I’m so sorry. It’s really unfair your family is going through so much stress.” When grown up kids are suffering, it’s a very troublesome kind of heartache. Approach your loved ones with gentleness and maybe some extra assurance, “I will always love you and your family.”
AVOID THIS: “They’re too old to be acting like that.” Or “Your kid needs to straighten up!” Or “You should just cut them off.” Tough-love statements aren’t very helpful and can add extra anxiety. You may have excellent points, but someone once said it’s better to be kind than to be right. (And we agree.)
SHOW YOU CARE: Listen carefully to your family member: what they’re saying and what they’re not saying. Just having someone to vent to may be enough. But if you want to go the extra mile, bring over their kid’s favorite childhood meal or dessert. A little reminder of good times might bring some much-needed hope.
Your best friend is moving their dad to an assisted living home.
TRY THIS: “I know this is very difficult for you. How have you been doing?” Let your friend let off some steam—they may have been waiting for this moment to unload everything on their mind.
AVOID THIS: “Why are you so worried? They’ll be well taken care of.” Or “Why don’t you get your siblings to help you more?” From the emotional toil to the financial burden to the frustrations of the parent-child relationship, caring for an aging mother or father is no easy task. Our gift to our friends is to not add an extra layer of complication.
SHOW YOU CARE: A thoughtful note can work wonders when someone is stretched thin, depleted, and sad to see their parent’s declining health. If your friend likes company, offer to run errands with them or take them to a lighthearted movie to get their mind off things for a few hours.
One of your friends is diagnosed with a terminal illness.
TRY THIS: “You’re my friend and I want you to feel supported and loved.” Or “For future reference, I never get tired of giving out hugs, okay?”
AVOID: “I’m going to pray for a miracle.” You can still silently pray for your friend, but your caring presence will make the most difference. Another not-so-helpful response: “Have you tried juicing? I hear it can really turn things around.” In some instances, your friend might like your help researching alternative healing and holistic treatments, but it’s best to follow their lead in this type of discussion.
SHOW YOU CARE: Your friend will need different things at different times, from support during the initial shock to shopping for a nourishing diet to getting dog-walking help on days she feels weak. Get the squad together and brainstorm ways you can help as a group. Maybe you make a rotating schedule of who sits with her at treatments. Maybe it’s a standing date with the girls. Maybe she wants to put together a memory book for her family…and you offer to help.
Your friend recently suffered a miscarriage.
TRY THIS: “I’m so, so sorry. Thank you for telling me. Would you like to come over for some coffee sometime and talk about it?” Or “My heart breaks for you. I know having a baby means the world to you.”
DON’T SAY: “You’ll get pregnant again…you just wait!” Or “Have you thought about adoption?” Or “At least you already have two kids.” Losing a baby creates a deep, aching wound that is often grieved in silence. Try not to fix this for your friend. Just let her cry…just hold her hand.
SHOW YOU CARE: Make a basket of goodies. Here are a few ideas to get you started: a blanket, teas, an oversized mug, her favorite candy, a pedicure gift card. If you’re a cook, bake her a warm dish to enjoy—or bring in sandwiches if you’re more of a takeout girl or guy.
A colleague is going through an extremely stressful time.
TRY THIS: “I wish I had a magic wand to make all of this stress go away. But I do have time to listen.” Or “I know you’re carrying a huge burden right now. I would like to drop off dinner to your house one night.” Or “Mind if I drive you to your appointment? We can grab a chai afterward.”
AVOID THIS: “It could be a whole lot worse.” Or “When I’m stressed, I just get my hubby to rub my back.” Note: Your friend may not have anyone to lean on. That’s why the weight of the world might be so heavy. It’s best not to emphasize that point even more.
SHOW YOU CARE: Offer to drive your friend to the airport, to their car dealership for an all-day repair (so they don’t have to sit forever), or help with another overwhelming errand or task. Get them a chair massage gift card or leave a warm breakfast pastry on their desk. Sometimes it’s the smallest things that really bring light to a dark time.
One of your friends just lost their pet.
TRY THIS: “Losing a pet is so very difficult. They’re family and they’ll always be in our hearts.” Or “I’m so sorry. You two were the perfect pair. I know you loved each other very much.” Or “You gave Sonny a wonderful life and he gave you so much joy. I always liked hearing your stories about his antics and hope you continue to keep telling them.”
AVOID THIS: Comments that downplay the grief. “At least your cat lived a long time.” Or “I think you should get a new puppy!” Or “Oh, really? That sucks.” Fur family is family and being sensitive to that will bring comfort to a very sad time.
SHOW YOU CARE: Find a cute pic on Instagram of your friend’s fur baby and put it in a frame for their desk. Write down one of your favorite anecdotes of their beloved pet. Get a personalized stepping-stone with the sweet pet’s name, and as a bonus, bring a plant that can be added to the garden in their memory.
A friend is going through a messy breakup.
TRY THIS: “Even though things are rough right now, I want you to know you’re a great guy and your friends care about you.” Or “It’s painful for a relationship to end. We want you to know we’ve got your back.”
AVOID THIS: “You’re too good for them anyway.” Or “I always thought they’d be the type to cheat.” Focus your efforts on supporting your friend in a positive way, not cutting down their ex. A good thing to remember: Leave the venting to your friend…they’ll probably be fine taking on that role.
SHOW YOU CARE: Invite your friend to see some live music. Or maybe help them pack up belongings that trigger unwelcoming memories. You could even bring over a pizza and binge watch a thriller or comedy series. They’ll probably like the company more than they know.
