Correct a Word document when lists won’t renumber correctly
It can be frustrating the numbered list in your Word document keeps starting at the wrong number — even if you select Restart Numbering from the shortcut menu. Rather than try to renumber, try this tip from Mary Ann Richardson.

You want the numbered list in your Word document to start at 1, but it keeps starting at 4, even if you select Restart Numbering from the shortcut menu. Rather than try to renumber, follow these steps:
- Right-click the numbered list.
- Click Set Numbering Value.
- Select the Start New List button.
- In the Set Value text box, type 1 and then click OK.
When you set the Set Value text box to a number, your list will start with that number; when Restart does not start with 1, it’s best to check and reset the Set Value text box according to the steps above.
The Set Numbering Value will also correct instances where clicking Continue Numbering will not work — for example, when you want one list to continue numbering from another above it. Follow these steps to correct this situation:
- Right-click the numbered list.
- Click Set Numbering Value.
- Click to select the Continue From Previous List button and then click OK.

Thanks this is a good quick fix, and your right it didn’t work every time but I found if the times it does not work and only holds the change for a second then goes back; try this.
Add yet another line return with the enter key
Then click the Undo iconIt changes it back again, starting over, and stays this time.

This was a good quick fix for me as well. I’m a technical writer by profession, and often have to edit “legacy” documents that contain generations of incorrect formatting and embedded errors that cause seemingly random quirks. Thanks for a useful post!

Glad I decided to check it out on the Internet. Do you know what’s wrong and why we face this problem?

Thanks for this tip – I’ve been tearing my hair out. Just to ADD TO THIS TIP: if you are stuck in a text box or some other form of graphics box, select the entire list first then click the *List Paragraph* style in the Styles list first, then do the tip above.
Microsoft excelled themselves with this bloated piece of junkware this time. There are so may features that just don’t work right.

Does not work for my Word 7. My issue is I have numbered questions after each chapter (each should begin with 1). Word 7 will randomly repaginate or something and gang them all together. “Continue numbering” is NOT checked. I have to go through and tell them again to Restart at 1. I even tried making it a Style. No joy. The box in the settings for that to update it is unchecked too. Driving me crazy.

One more trick. When all else fails, including trying to strip out legacy styles or reverting to normal – cut the first item out entirely and paste it as text only into a non-formatted notepad. Then accept the deletion in Word, and paste the now naked text back in again. Once it’s been “steam cleaned” this way, resetting the number using the methods above should work.
