This is MOST LIKLEY by design, and is for good reason. By default, Word doesn’t trust files in temp directories from your browser (nor should it).
However, two ideas come to mind:
- Do a right click ‘Save As’ and save the file to somewhere in your local user
directory, (Desktop / Documents / Downloads).
OR
- Add just your user profile to the trusted list. (not ideal, but a compromise workaround)
From Word 2010/2013: Click File > Word Options > Trust Center
You could also add the root of your user directory and add subfolders if you’re really having problems.
Note: This doesn’t tell word to trust everything but just anything in your local user profile directory.
Again, if these files are in a browser’s temp directory, you either turn off trust center or you save them to a trusted location, it’s kind of a one or the other kinda deal, as I don’t think trusting your whole user director is the best solution.

I got a new computer for Christmas. It came with a trial where I could install Microsoft Office 2013 365 five different times. I installed Office, and I can open up word or any other program, type, and save it. But when I have to download office files
from an email or a teachers moodle page, it wont open. I click download, click open the file, and then I got the loading box for eternity. It never loads. It just keeps saying opening in protected view. Please help!

Word files downloaded from the internet not opening. My microsoft office 2013 is having a problem. When I download some .doc/docx file from internet/email it does not open. The starting small window appears, but it just stays at «opening in protected view» and doesnt ever open the file. I have tried reinstalling the office. I reinstalled chrome browser. But the problem still persists. If i download the same file on another pc, and then transfer it to my pc using a USB flash, it opens on my pc then. Help me solve this issue. EDIT: I’m using windows 8 (64bit) |

Welcome to the HP Forums
I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.
As I understand you are unable to open the downloaded word files,
Don’t worry as I’ll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
Have you assigned or set a default app for all your .docx format files?
If you haven’t, that’s the reason you have this issue, as it’s not able to auto-detect the program created to open the file and here’s what you need to do:
In Settings, click on the “System” icon, and scroll down to “Default Apps” in the left-hand side menu.
Choose Default Apps by File Type
Overall, how you choose to organize your app commands is a matter of personal preference, but certain options such as “Default Apps by File Type” can usually tend to be a bit easier to manage for the average everyday user.
To choose which apps launch which types of media or link by the type of file, select the “Choose Default Apps by File Type” option. Here you’ll be greeted by a two-tiered menu, the first containing every file type that Windows 10 is designed to handle, and the second with the list of apps you currently have installed on the machine.
Say for example you want to launch .doc, .docx, etc… files in Windows Media Player rather than the in-house Movies app. To change this, just scroll down to “.docx” on the left, and once selected, choose the corresponding application on the right that you’d like to set as the default.
Keep me posted,
If I have helped you resolve the issue, feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the ‘Thumbs Up’ icon below,
