From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of time zone abbreviations.
Time zones are often represented by alphabetic abbreviations such as «EST», «WST», and «CST», but these are not part of the international time and date standard ISO 8601 and their use as sole designator for a time zone is discouraged. Such designations can be ambiguous; for example, «CST» can mean China Standard Time (UTC+8), Cuba Standard Time (UTC−5), and (North American) Central Standard Time (UTC−6), and it is also a widely used variant of ACST (Australian Central Standard Time, UTC+9:30). Such designations predate both ISO 8601 and the internet era; in an earlier era, they were sufficiently unambiguous for many practical uses within a national context (for example, in railway timetables and business correspondence), but their ambiguity explains their deprecation in the internet era, when communications more often cannot rely on implicit geographic context to supply part of the meaning.

Although initially our world was divided into 24 standard time zones, there are much more of them. Due to a lot of geographical, social and political reasons they often deviate from the universal standards and recommendations which set by international institutions. That is why the list of time zones worldwide includes much more than 24 names and abbreviations.
Names of the time zones are usually accompanied by time zone abbreviations and require decryptions. For convenience, we have combined them into one table. You can see the list of time zones by name below:

It is hard to give an exact number of time zones names. The traditional approach to classifying time zones involves the division of the earth by 24 of time zones. Most worldwide timezones really differ from each other by exactly one hour. By convention, their local time is calculated as an offset from UTC or GMT. At the same time, in many countries and cities, these offsets change twice a year due to the transition to daylight saving time (named summer time in some countries).
The exception of such an approach is those countries which also need to reflect inner processes within the regions. For example:
As a result, there are many more than 24 time zones in the world. Every country may have a particular standard time zone with its specific name and abbreviation (time zone code).
Different names and abbreviations are useful for identifying a particular country or location. For this reason, different time zone codes are used in different countries even if they belong to the same time zone.
Time zones list shows the diversity of their name and designations. Time zone abbreviation often consists of several letters, which mean:
Anyway decoding of all abbreviations for time zones is listed above. For convenience, the list of timezones by country is sorted alphabetically.

A time zone is a region on Earth with a uniform standard time for legal, commercial, and social purposes. It is convenient for close commercial or other communication areas to keep the same time, so time zones tend to follow the boundaries of countries and their subdivisions.
Most of the time zones on land are offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) by a whole number of hours (UTC−12 to UTC+14), but a few are offset by 30 or 45 minutes. Some higher latitude countries use daylight saving time for part of the year, typically by changing clocks by an hour. Many land time zones are skewed toward the west of the corresponding nautical time zones. This also creates a permanent daylight-saving time effect.
Alphabetically sorted. Note that some abbreviations are not unique; these will have several entries in the list. Other time zones have many common names, each of which will be listed.

The daylight decrease during the winter is due to Earth’s axial tilt of 23 degrees. If the Earth was not tilted on its axis, the length of day and night would remain steady year long. During winter in the northern hemisphere, there are fewer daylight hours, and the southern hemisphere, in turn, has longer daylight hours and experiences summer.
The main purpose of Daylight Saving Time (called “Summer Time” in many places in the world) is to make better use of daylight. In Ireland, we advance our clocks forward by one hour in Spring to maximize daylight for the summer months. This has the effect of moving an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. In winter, the clocks are changed back by one hour to maximize daylight during the morning hours.
