“I look forward to” (Present Simple) или “I’m looking forward to” (Present Continious).

В обоих случаях перевод остается прежним, меняется только стиль. Для делового английского мы используем “I look forward to” и в разговорном английском — “I’m looking forward to”.

Formal: I look forward to meeting you at our new office.

look forward to: meaning and explanation

If you are looking forward to something, it means you are happy or excited about something that will happen in the future. e.g. I don’t know about you but I’m really looking forward to the weekend. This week has been exhausting.

In spoken English and informal written contexts we tend to use this phrasal verb in the continuous form (I’m looking forward to something).

It is very common to use this phrasal verb to conclude letters and emails in English with some version of the phrase I look forward to hearing from you soon. Note that in formal contexts we use the present simple rather than the present continuous.

Watch out for a very common mistake when using this expression. Remember that we look forward to something – a noun. For example, at the moment I’m looking forward to lunch, to the football, to my birthday etc. If we want to use a verb here (to describe an action that we are looking forward to) then we have to use the -ing form, e.g. I’m looking forward to seeing my family, I’m not looking forward to going to work tomorrow etc. It is very common for students to accidentally use an infinitive here (e.g. I’m looking forward to see you).

Remember – when you use a verb like a noun, use the -ing form.

Looking Forward To

In the example I gave, I said the following:

“… So, we’re going to go to Europe in two weeks…. I’m really looking forward to my holiday but I’m not looking forward to the journey.”

This means that I was excited about my holiday but wasn’t excited about the journey.

Here are four more examples:

  • “He’s looking forward to starting his new job.”
  • “I’m looking forward to going to the beach next week.
  • “I’m looking forward to the beach.”
  • “We’re not looking forward to it.”

Notice that when we use this phrasal verb with another verb we use the gerund (starting, going).

    In this case «non vedo l’ora di…» it’s a little confusing, because of the presence of ‘non’. If you use «sono ansioso/a di…» (same meaning: I’m looking forward to…), you can easily say the opposite: «non sono (affatto) ansioso/a di…»

    e «I am looking forward to …». La mia domanda e’ — come si dice » I am NOT looking forward to it»? Ho appena scritto una lettera in italiano in cui ho scritto » torno al lavoro la settimana prossima e non ne vedo l’ora». Ho voluto dire » I am not looking forward to it». Adesso, rileggendola vedo che il e’ significato e’ tutt’altra cosa.

    I have now read the posts on «I am not looking forward to..» Thanks to the moderator for finding it! However the answer doesn’t really satisfy me. I am not anxious about returning to work. I am simply not looking forward to it! Is there another way of communicating this?

    You can use Necsus’ suggestion:

    Torno al lavoro la settimana prossima…
    …e non sono affatto ansiosa di farlo.
    …e non si può dire che non ne veda l’ora.
    …ma vorrei tanto non doverlo fare così presto.
    …ma mi sembra anche troppo presto.

    Yes they’re very similar, but if you do a Google search using the terms gravidanza or gestazione, it appears that scalciare is the verb most commonly used in this context.

    I like this, but I’d put the «proprio» after «muoio», like:

    «non è che muoio proprio dalla voglia di sentire il bambino che scalcia (forte)».
