Hi,
My teacher, who teaches in New Oriental School, told us that we can use «mega building» to mean «skyscraper» or «high-rise», Google shows me more than 100 thousand results but why couldn’t I find the word in all of the dictionaries? Is it a word or it is just a compound word for some websites?
Can anyone help?

I disagree with your teacher. A skyscraper is a very tall building; a high-rise is a building which is tall, but not as tall as a skyscraper. To my ear, a «mega-building» would be a building which is large, but not necessarily tall. The Pentagon, for instance, is a mega-building, but certainly not a skyscraper or high-rise.

I have never heard the word «mega-building». I would know what you meant by it, but it would sound strange to me in conversation.
I would say «skyscraper» (more British English) or «high-rise» (more American English).
To me, «high-rise» means apartment blocks but «skyscraper» means a very large office block etc.

If what you want to say is ‘skyscraper’ or a ‘high-rise’ why not use the more usual word (skyscraper/high-rise) that everybody knows? Imho (I may be wrong) ‘mega building’ could be interpreted to mean a very large building, not necessarily a skyscraper

«Mega» is a prefix, not an independent noun or adjective, so it would have to be a «megabuilding.» I don’t sit around reading Google, and «megabuilding» is not in my vocabulary as a synonym of «skyscraper.»
Since «mega-» means large, a «megabuilding» would be large, but it would not have to be in height. For a long time, and perhaps still, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, was the worlds «largest» office building—measured by square feet of floor space. I think that would make it a «megabuilding,» but it is certainly not a «skyscraper»: it has only five stories above ground (and two below).
I don’t know if there is any official architectural definition of «high-rise.» The term can be used to differentiate a building from a «walk-up,» which doesn’t have elevators—you must walk up stairs. Three stories is common for a walk-up in the U.S. In countries with more vigorous populations, it might be common to have four-, five-, or six-story walk-ups.
«Megabuilding» sounds like commercial real estate marketing hype without any fixed meaning.

I have heard «megabuilding» on television to describe skyscrapers that are essentially independent communities in a single building. I wouldn’t use them interchangeably, but there is such a word and it is used to describe very tall, self-contained buildings. There aren’t many of them in existence (yet), as far as I know.

If you filter out «building blocks» and «building bloks», the number of hits goes down to around 48,000 results.
