Maybe the person was trying to say ups and downs and got the idiom mixed up, or maybe it’s meant to be funny, or it’s a regional thing…

«Highs and lows» is quite common. It’s very similar to «ups and downs» but not quite the same, as «up» and «down» are directional, whereas «high» and «low» are peak levels.

I’d use these interchangeably. (Sorry, coiffe. :( )

I guess I see it as expressing the contrasts in the relationship, rather than a specific direction.

    «Good morning» ev’ry day.
    Her joys, her woes,
    Her highs, her lows,

I agree. I would rather say «ups and downs» in this context, and «high and low» to express a state of mind (as a general rule).

I couldn’t agre more. It’s just that the thread brought those lines to mind and I thought that, after all, they’re good English and could provide an example. Though, of course, one can’t resort to songs and poetry to illustrate the regular use of a language.

I’m a regular person, and I’ve referred to something or something shared with someone as having its highs and lows.

When I say it this way, I mean that something has a bad side/good side, bad points/good points, its positives/negatives, good times/hard times.

I’ve used it to describe the contrasts in a relationship, or the circuitous cycle of any normal relationship.

    For instance:
That first year of dating was the high point in our friendship. But then we started to take each other for granted, began fighting all the time, and that summer of our second year together, we could barely be civil to one another. It was the low point of our time together.

But we stuck it out, because we knew that all relationships have their highs and lows.

And now we’re closer than ever.

I’m not sure about that! Coiffe and I seem to agree on the high/low issue, but I see your two choices as being very similar and interchangeable. If I understood him correctly, he doesn’t think so.

In my above post, I think you could insert ups/downs in that short scenario I presented, and still keep the same meaning.

It’s hard to say why two Americans see it differently.

Actually I agree with everything that has been written here. My short post at 4 a.m. was an effort to make a quick definition which distinguished slightly between highs/lows vs. ups/downs. I think they are usually quite interchangeable. I also agree that ups/downs is probably used more often in reference to relationships. Still, highs/lows would be used in the same way by native speakers without even thinking twice.
