PrefaceWhat is the Vocabulary List? The following quotation comesfrom Jim Burke’s home page.
“A thorough survey of various textbooks, assignments, contentarea standards, and examinations yields the following list of words. You cannot expect to succeed on assignments if you do notunderstand the directions. The words fall into several categories, which are not identified on this sheet: nouns (e.g., What you reador create); verbs (e.g., What the assignment asks you to do);adjectives (e.g., specific details about what you must do); andadverbs, which provide very important information about how todo the assignment.”

NEW: Academic Vocabulary 2.0 (Expanded)
I have taken Jim’s Academic Vocabulary List (pages 3-4) andcategorized the words into parts of speech (pages 5-34). Insome cases, I’ve expanded the root to show word usage indifferent forms.
The purpose of compiling this list is to make it so the teacher willbe able to take all the words in the Academic Vocabulary Listand put them in a format that will make it easier to integrate theminto a usable vocabulary program, or just to use in daily lessons.
This format puts all the words’ parts of speech at your fingertips.I hope this helps you as you help students! Good luck!

SUFFIXES [Forming Parts of Speech]When you are reading, you will come across unfamiliar words. It is often possible to guess their meanings if you understand the way words in English are generally formed. An English word can be divided into three parts: a prefix, a [root / base word], and a SUFFIX. Pre- means ‘before. A prefix, therefore, is what comes before the [root / base word]. A SUFFIX is attached to the end of the [root / base word]. Many times, a word can be defined when it is known what the prefix and the SUFFIX mean. Prefixes usually change the meaning of the word. However, a SUFFIX can change the meaning of the word; it can also form the part of speech. Below are groups of SUFFIXES (Multiple SUFFIXES) that are all used in the Academic Vocabulary List. They are listed under the parts of speech they form. The bolded SUFFIXES are usually seen more often.
