FAQs on Rhyming Words

What are Rhyming Words?

Rhyming words are words that have the same ending sound. For example, the words ‘cat’, ‘hat’, and ‘rat’ all rhyme because they end with the same sound (-at). Rhyming words are often used in poetry and songwriting to create a musical or rhythmic effect. They can also be used in children’s literature and in other types of writing to add a playful or humorous element.

Rhyming words have different beginning sounds, but have the same vowel and ending sounds, for example: cat/sat/pat/hat, spin/fin/chin/pin, etc. Homophones are words that sound alike but have different meanings and spellings, for example, pain/pane, hi/high/, you/yew/ewe, there/their/they’re, to/too/two.

You can see here a group of word lists. You must know while the vowel is the heart of every word and the most important piece to create rhymes, the consonant sounds are also the other half of rhymes. A perfect rhyme is when the words end with the same vowel and consonant sounds even if they were produced by different letters. A slant rhyme is the matching consonant sound between the words, while the vowel sound is different. Thus the consonant sound is enough to form a rhyme of sorts. However, the consonant part is not completely enough to form a perfect rhyme, we need the vowel sound. In addition, the spelling may vary from one word to another but the pronunciation may be identical. That leads us to know that there is a mismatch between the homography and the pronunciation of words in the English language.

Rhyming words serve several purposes from writing a funny joke to the most elegant lines of poetry. The effect that rhymes have on the human mind is incredible due to their simplicity and complexity that are fused to instigate a feeling beyond depiction or description.

An intense effect of association is established in the creative writing through the connections of rhymes that go on to connect ideas to serve as a pillar aiming at creating one strong structure.

Perfect and Slant Rhyme

The most obvious perfect and slant rhymes can be seen in our article. You can spot the slant rhymes precisely in the rhymes of the word “orange” and the rhymes of the word “world”.

Rhyming Word Lists

While a rhyming dictionary is always a handy tool to have when writing poems, sometimes it’s also helpful to have lists of rhyming words that are all in the same category. These rhyming word lists focus on common categories to help you write poems more quickly and easily.

For example, if you are writing a poem that involves sports, it might be helpful to rhyme kickball with stickball or biking with hiking. If you were writing a poem about foods, you might want to rhyme beans with greens, sardines, or nectarines. And a poem about geographical locations might rhyme Alaska with Nebraska, Austin with Boston, or Bulgaria with Bavaria.

Here are a few rhyming word lists that I have created.  I hope you will find them useful in your own poetry.
