Words That Do Double Duty. Some of the words in this book can be used as different parts of speech.
The sample sentences for the word gallant show it to be an adjective, a
word that describes a noun or pronoun:

Lesson 1: Office Fundamentals

As with all programs designed to operate with a Microsoft Windows operating system, MS

Office uses the concept of a graphical user interface. In Windows, a simple point-and-

click approach is used to launch programs, manage files, and perform other operating

system functions. Applications such as MS Office, designed to run in Windows, use the same

point-and-click concept to execute the commands and functions of the software.

MS Office employs a standard look and feel for program menus, toolbars, and other

interface elements in all of its applications, making it easy for users to transfer skills from

one application to another. The common user interface concept (using similar menus,

toolbars, and command structures in different applications) is discussed in detail in the first

chapter, and instructions are provided for using the standard interface elements found in

Office programs.

In Office Chapter 1, the most significant and frequently used common functions of Office

programs are discussed, including the following:

file handling

printing

selecting, editing, and formatting text

moving and copying text

finding and replacing text

inserting objects

using language tools

applying font attributes

using page settings

One of the ways in which modern software has been made easier to use is through

extensive Help files, which provide a searchable or interactive source of instructions and

explanations for the functions and features of programs. The structure of the Office Help

system is described in this chapter, along with several different options or tools for finding

the information you need.
