Word inside a letter

Words from Letters FAQ

What Words Can I Make With These Letters?

That is the, «To be, or not to be,» question of all word games. There are usually many words you can make. Sometimes, there won’t be many at all. Just remember, sometimes it pays to make a word with fewer than the maximum number of points possible because it sets you up better for your next turn.

What Is the Longest English Word?

In the Oxford English Dictionary, the longest word is FLOCCINAUCINIHILIPILIFICATION, which means «the act of deeming or estimating something as worthless. Other dictionaries contain the word PNEUMONOULTRAMICROSCOPICSILICOVOLCANOCONIOSIS, which is coal miners’ «black lung disease.»

If you think that’s bad, German is worse. The longest word in German is DONAUDAMPFSCHIFFFAHRTSELEKTRIZITÄTENHAUPTBETRIEBSWERKBAUUNTERBEAMTENGESELLSCHAFT. FLOCCI…, at 29 letters, and PNEUMONO …, at 45 letters, combined aren’t that long! None of these words will fit on a crossword game board. Scrabble boards are 15 letters across, so the longest word, which also doubles as the word worth the most points, possible is OXYBENPHUTAZONE. It requires eight letters already be placed, none of them on any of the three triples or the double-letter squares, and it scores 1,778 points. No one has ever achieved it.

How Do You Find Words With Letters Missing?

The best way is to use our tool. Of course, you should never use it while playing competitive games because it would count as looking up words in the Official Scrabble Player’s Dictionary prior to playing. But, if you wanted to ask yourself, «Which words from letters in my rack can I make?» during a friendly Words With Friends game, then that would not be bad form. Outside of competition, study as many words as you want using the website. It’s an invaluable training tool!

                Text effects are often interesting for me to do in Photoshop. Most of us would have the same interest, may be it’s the most often reason for which Photoshop is used (Of course, next to correction of portraits/dp Open-mouthed smile !!). But, I’m sure, more than ten text effects, you’ll surely get bored-adjusting the type mask, layer effects and all…

ECE Typography

                Often we see typographic posters like the one above in deviantart etc. These are kinda something that induce some prolific ideas of doing one our own. I first came across this one when I was searching for something, but was amazed on the idea how they embedded every keyword of ECE into the letters into it. I wanted to learn it, searched for tutorials and after a long search I found one and tried it(I forgot that URL and search keyword!). I got time to think of my own idea and execute in this vacation and did one.

563033_3348116020356_967750086_n

                Many of my friends liked it and wanted to know how. Because of enthusiasm to do one like this, someone tried even editing this imageSmile. So here’s how I do, you can call this a tutorial too… Smile

Step 1: Open a new Document

                Let’s open the Photoshop interface. From the ‘File‘ menu, click ‘New’(Ctrl+N) to open the new document window. Choose your own size. Setting 300 ppi resolution makes the document look good if printed. So I go with that. Make sure that the background contents are white. Size is based on your wish. Then click OK to proceed.

image

Step 2: Select the TYPE Tool

                Then, to write a letter, select the Type Tool, right behind the ‘T’ icon. Press and hold the icon a submenu will appear. Hover over it to select the type tool.image

Step 3: Select the desired font

                Next comes an important step, where you decide the perfect font for the letter inside which you are gonna type the letters. Avoid fonts that don’t have uniform width for all letters. It’ll be nice if you select a font that has a very less proportion of curves to straight lines in the letters(not like the one I’ve done here!). May be one like Arial Black or Impact or anything like that. In the down drop menu of Type tool’s option bar, choose the desired font. Don’t worry about the size and others. We’re gonna change them as we like in the next steps.

image

Step 4: Type the letter

                Click inside the Photoshop canvas and start typing a letter. Just a single letter(not like mine), I tell you.

image

Step 5: Free Transform the typed letter

                Now, we’re gonna change the way it look like. Yes, we’re going to make it big enough to contain our text. To do that, invoke Free Transform by pressing the Ctrl+T or by right clicking on the letter(still the letter layer being selected, but don’t worry it’ll always be such). Hold and drag the diagonal corners’ anchor points to make it big enough.Unless you feel that the letter is not up to the desired aspect ratio, don’t forget to press Shift while you free-transform it(It maintains it’s aspect ratio). Press Enter once you’ve done it, else press Escape to discard the transformation and start again.

image

Step 6: Create a path from the type

                With the Type tool still being selected, right click anywhere else in the canvas to bring up the menu. Click on Create Work Path. This’ll convert our letter into a guiding-path which we can use as a container for the rest of our text. An outline of the letter is created, which if you cannot see, can be made visible in the next step.

image

Step 7: Hide the type layer

                The letter is no more required now and so hide the type layer by clicking the eye icon next to the name of the type layer. On clicking it goes off, telling that the layer is now invisible. If not visible, the layers palette can be brought by checking against Layers under View menu in Menu bar.

image

The result is something like…

image

Step 8: Click inside the path

                Our path is visible now. With Type tool still being selected, click anywhere inside the path. The outline now has become a custom-made text box for us! Click anywhere inside, but don’t type. we’ve got something to do before.

Step 9: Change the font for the text that fills

                Now go to the Type tool Options Bar and set the font for the text that fills the letter outline. Then set the font size to some appropriate size.

                Oh, no! Don’t start typing. We have to check some really important thing that makes the effect truly admirable.

image

Step 10: Justify all

                Yes, that is Justify all…To bring that option out, click on the paragraph palette icon, that is in the right end of the Type tool Option Bar(it’s highlighted in the above image). Click on the Justify All icon in the palette (highlighted in the image below). This makes all the text that we type inside the letter to fill/occupy the whole area. Otherwise, the text could go left (or right or centered) aligned, that will not exactly show the boundary of the  letter. So our text fills the letter as much as possible.

image

Step 11: Type the text inside letter

                Yeah, we’re ready to go and all that what is left is to type in the text that fills the letter. As you can see, the text fills the fullest possible area it can. Fill the text. If the text could not fill the entire letter, just try increasing the font size in the Options bar. If it overflows, do the reverse thing. Remember , you can give font size in decimals too!

image

                After you complete typing in, adjusting them, click on the check mark symbol in the end of the Options bar to accept the changes.

image

Step 12: Hide the path

                After adding text, the thing that’s just left is hiding the path and it can be done by simply pressing Ctrl +H. And that’s it, we’ve created a typographic letter that is completely made up of text!!

image

                This one what I’ve done here is just for an example and you can create things 100 times better than this. The part of tutorial that is left comes from your creativity. Try different fonts for the text that fills in, different font sizes for different words in the text, different colors for different words(as i had done in image 2), different formatting(bold,italicized) for different word or a combination of these. Try it !!

Find words using these letters / Find words in a word

This search will find all words contained in the letters that you specify, as long as the word is in this word list. The resulting words will have some or all of the letters, and only these letters. This search is sensitive to the frequency of occurrence of letters in the requested set. For example, if you specify 2 e’s in your request, the resulting words will have, at most, 2 e’s. More words will result from more letters, but too many letters might produce too many words and obscure your findings. The contains only search is a good Scrabble® or Words with Friends™ helper. Enter your letters and click the Find Words button. If you find yourself entering a letter set in the contains only search box, and doing repeated searches, each time altering a single letter, perhaps the contains only, plus one blank tile search, would work better for you.

So I’m making a hanging man game and I have run into a problem regarding indexes. Basically, I want to find the index of a letter inside a secret word, the problem is that if the secret word includes two letters that are the same, for instance, «guacamole», where the letter a has the index of 2 and 4 but when I want to find the index of a, it only prints «2» and not «4». Is there a way around this? Thanks in advance!

Part of code where problem occurs:

for letter in secret_word:
    if user_guess == letter:
        current_word_index = secret_word.find(letter)
        print(current_word_index) #Not in full program, only to test errors.

Full code:

#Hanging man

import string

space = "v"

dbl_space = "n"

secret_word = str(input("Enter a secret word: "))

guess_low = list(string.ascii_lowercase)

used_letters = []

user_errors = 0

user_errors_max = 1

secret_word_index = int(len(secret_word))

secret_word_placeholder = list(range(secret_word_index))

while user_errors != user_errors_max:
    user_guess = str(input("Enter a letter: "))
    if len(user_guess) != 1:
        print("You have to pick one letter")
    if user_guess in guess_low:
        guess_low.remove(user_guess)
        used_letters.extend(user_guess)
        print(used_letters)
    for letter in secret_word:
        if user_guess == letter:
            current_word_index = secret_word.find(letter)

if user_errors == user_errors_max:
    print("You lost the game, the secret word was: " + secret_word)

This is an example of what you are trying to achieve. use list comprehension.

string='hello'
letter='l'
[idx for idx,ch in enumerate(string) if ch==letter]

Python’s string find accepts a start parameter that tells it where to start searching:

>>> "guacamole".find('a')
2
>>> "guacamole".find('a', 3)
4

Use a loop, and use the index of the last hit you found + 1 as the start parameter for the next call.

Another more verbose solution might be:

str1 = "ooottat"
def find_all_indices(text, letter):
    indices_of_letter = []
    for i, ch in enumerate(text):

        if ch == letter:
            indices_of_letter.append(i)
    return indices_of_letter
print(find_all_indices(str1, 'o'))

Side note:

Indexes is the nontechnical plural of index. the right technical plural for index is indices

Yes, if you instantiate a new_variable to be the secret_word variable before the for loop, the in the line current_word_index = secret_word.find(letter) change secret_word.find(letter) to new_variable .find(letter) then below the if statement write new_variable = new_variable [1:] which will remove the letter just found.

so your code would look something like:

new_variable  =  secret_word

for i in secret_word
     if user_guess == letter:
            current_word_index = new_variable.find(letter)
               #I would do print(current_word_index) this will show the index
               #Or current_word_index = current_word_index + ',' + new_variable.find(letter)
     new_variable= new_variable[1:] #this will take away your letter.

Python regex re.search() method looks for occurrences of the regex pattern inside the entire target string and returns the corresponding Match Object instance where the match found.

The re.search() returns only the first match to the pattern from the target string. Use a re.search() to search pattern anywhere in the string.

Table of contents

  • When to use re.search()
  • Search vs. findall
  • Regex search groups or multiple patterns
    • Search multiple words using regex
  • Case insensitive regex search

How to use re.search()

Before moving further, let’s see the syntax of it.

Syntax

re.search(pattern, string, flags=0)

The regular expression pattern and target string are the mandatory arguments, and flags are optional.

  • pattern: The first argument is the regular expression pattern we want to search inside the target string.
  • string: The second argument is the variable pointing to the target string (In which we want to look for occurrences of the pattern).
  • flags: Finally, the third argument is optional and it refers to regex flags by default no flags are applied.

There are many flags values we can use. For example, the re.I is used for performing case-insensitive searching. We can also combine multiple flags using bitwise OR (the | operator).

Return value

The re.search() method returns a Match object ( i.e., re.Match). This match object contains the following two items.

  1. The tuple object contains the start and end index of a successful match.
  2. Second, it contains an actual matching value that we can retrieve using a group() method.

If the re.search() method fails to locate the occurrences of the pattern that we want to find or such a pattern doesn’t exist in a target string it will return a None type.

Now, Let’s see how to use re.search().

Python search regex pattern

Regex search example – look for a word inside the target string

Now, let’s see how to use re.search() to search for the following pattern inside a string.

Pattern: w{8}

What does this pattern mean?

  • The w is a regex special sequence that represents any alphanumeric character such as letters uppercase or lowercase, digits as well as the underscore character.
  • Then the 8 inside curly braces mean the characters have to occur exactly 8 times in a row inside the target string

In simple words, it means to search any eight-letter word

"Emma is a baseball player who was born on June 17, 1993."

As we can see in the above string baseball is the first eight-letter word inside the target string, so we should get the baseball as an output.

import re

# Target String
target_string = "Emma is a baseball player who was born on June 17"

# search() for eight-letter word
result = re.search(r"w{8}", target_string)

# Print match object
print("Match Object", result)
# output re.Match object; span=(10, 18), match='baseball'

# print the matching word using group() method
print("Matching word: ", result.group())
# Output 'baseball'

Let’s understand the above example.

  • First of all, I used a raw string to specify the regular expression pattern. As you may already know, the backslash has a special meaning in some cases because it may indicate an escape character or escape sequence. To avoid that we used raw string.
  • Also, we are not defining and compiling this pattern beforehand (like the compile method), The practice is to write the actual pattern in the string format.
  • Next, we wrote a regex pattern to search for any eight-letter word inside the target string.
  • Next, we passed this pattern to re.search() method to looks for occurrences of the pattern and it returned the re.Match object.
  • Next, we used the group() method of a re.Match object to retrieve the exact match value i.e., baseball.

Regex search example find exact substring or word

In this example, we will find substring “ball” and “player” inside a target string.

import re

# Target String
target_string = "Emma is a baseball player who was born on June 17, 1993."

# find substring 'ball'
result = re.search(r"ball", target_string)

# Print matching substring
print(result.group())
# output 'ball'

# find exact word/substring surrounded by word boundary
result = re.search(r"bballb", target_string)
if result:
    print(result)
# output None

# find word 'player'
result = re.search(r"bplayerb", target_string)
print(result.group())
# output 'player'

When to use re.search()

The search() method will always match and return only the first occurrence of the pattern from the target string.

  • Use it when you want to find the first match. The search method is useful for a quick match. I.e., As soon as it gets the first match, it will stop its execution. You will get performance benefits.
  • Also, please use it when you want to check the possibility of a pattern in a long target string.

Avoid using the search() method in the following cases

  1. To search all occurrence to a regular expression, please use the findall() method instead.
  2. To search at the start of the string, Please use the match() method instead. Also, read regex search() vs. match()

If you want to perform search and replace operation in Python using regex, please use the re.sub() method.

Search vs. findall

Both search and findall method servers the different purpose/use case when performing regex pattern matching in Python.

As you know, the search method scans the entire string to look for a pattern and returns only the first match. I.e., As soon as it gets the first match, it stops its execution.

On the other hand, The findall() method returns all matches to the pattern.

So use the findall() method to search all occurrence/possible matches to a regular expression.

One more difference, the search method returns a Match object which consists of the start and end index of a successful match and the actual matching value that we can retrieve using a group() method.

On the other hand, the findall() method returns all the matches in the form of a Python list.

Regex search groups or multiple patterns

In this section, we will learn how to search for multiple distinct patterns inside the same target string. Let’s assume, we want to search the following two distinct patterns inside the target string at the same time.

  1. A ten-letter word
  2. Two consecutive digits

To achieve this, Let’s write two regular expression patterns.

Regex Pattern 1: w{10}

It will search for any six-letter word inside the target string

Regex Pattern 2: d{2}

Now each pattern will represent one group. Let’s add each group inside a parenthesis ( ). In our case r"(w{10}).+(d{2})"

On a successful search, we can use match.group(1) to get the match value of a first group and match.group(2) to get the match value of a second group.

Now let’s see how to use these two patterns to search any six-letter word and two consecutive digits inside the target string.

Example to search multiple patterns

import re

target_string = "Emma is a basketball player who was born on June 17."

# two group enclosed in separate ( and ) bracket
result = re.search(r"(w{10}).+(d{2})", target_string)

# Extract the matches using group()

# print ten-letter word
print(result.group(1))
# Output basketball

# print two digit number
print(result.group(2))
# Output 17

Let’s understand this example

  • We enclosed each pattern in the separate opening and closing bracket.
  • I have added the .+ metacharacter before the second pattern. the dot represents any character except a new line and the plus sign means that the preceding pattern is repeating one or more times. So .+ means that before the first group, we have a bunch of characters that we can ignore
  • Next, we used the group() method to extract two matching values.

Note: The group() method returned two matching values because we used two patterns.

Also, read search for a regex pattern within a text file.

Search multiple words using regex

Let’s take another example and search any three words surrounded by space using regex. Let’s search words “emma”, “player”, “born” in the target string.

Use | (pipe) operator to specify multiple patterns.

import re

str1 = "Emma is a baseball player who was born on June 17, 1993."

# search() for eight-letter word surrounded by space
# b is used to specify word boundary
result = re.findall(r"bEmmab|bplayerb|bbornb", str1)
print(result)
# Output ['Emma', 'player', 'born']

Case insensitive regex search

There is a possibility that the string contains lowercase and upper case words or words with a combination of lower case and uppercase letters.

For example, you want to search a word using regex in a target string, but you don’t know whether that word is in uppercase or lowercase letter or a combination of both. Here you can use the re.IGNORECASE flag inside the search() method to perform case-insensitive searching of a regex pattern.

Example:

import re

# Target String
target_string = "Emma is a Baseball player who was born on June 17, 1993."

# case sensitive searching
result = re.search(r"emma", target_string)
print("Matching word:", result)
# Output None

print("case insensitive searching")
# using re.IGNORECASE
result = re.search(r"emma", target_string, re.IGNORECASE)
print("Matching word:", result.group())
# Output 'Emma'
