Recently Microsoft came up with some updates that caused many users to get an error message saying “Microsoft Office Word has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application.” when you try to run it. After clicking the OK button, Microsoft Word closes. You’ll also be getting the same error message if you try to run any of the other office components such as Excel, Publisher, Access, Outlook etc. The worst part is uninstalling Microsoft Office and re-installing wouldn’t help to fix this problem. Before doing the above, you should at least use the official Microsoft Office Diagnostics tool to check if it has detected any other known problems.
There’s a Microsoft Knowledge Base article on this issue and the solution is to give EVERYONE full control of the Opa11.dat file. Unfortunately this solution would only help to fix the problem when the non-administrative user accounts on the computer do not have permission to modify specific files that are used by the Office 2003 Setup program or the Office XP Setup program.
Another reason why this problem occurs is you have been knowingly or unknowingly using a pirated version of Microsoft Office and have recently installed the latest updates. Some people are able to resolve this issue by using system restore to go back to an earlier restore point, but here’s a simpler way to fix this problem.
The file that is causing this error is MSO.DLL located at:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedOffice10
for Office XP,
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedOffice11
for Office 2003 and
C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedOffice12
for Office 2007.
64-bit users can look in “Program Files (x86)Common Files…” for the dll. Microsoft has updated this file and it was distributed in one of the hotfixes to give you this error message when it detects a pirated copy of Office that is installed on your computer. When you try to run a repair or even uninstallation, the setup won’t touch the MSO.DLL file at all. That is why after repairing or uninstalling, you’ll still get the same error because the updated MSO.DLL is still there.
The simple solution is to search for the file MSO.DLL on your computer and copy the older MSO.DLL file replacing the current one in Program Files. I found two versions of MSO.DLL in C:WINDOWSInstaller$PatchCache$Managed…..
If you can’t find the other backed up MSO.DLL file on your computer, it is available in uncompressed form on the Office 2003 CD but not the Office XP or 2007 CD’s because they’re packed inside a CAB file. Navigate to:
{Drive}FilesPfilesCommonMSSharedOffice11
Or you can simply delete all the currently installed MSO.DLL files from Program Files and $PatchCache$ etc, then perform a repair or reinstallation of Microsoft Office XP, 2003 or 2007. That would restore the older version of MSO.DLL from the installation CD for you.
If you are struggling to find an original MSO.DLL from a computer search or your Office CD, the easiest thing to do is download one of the zip files below which contains the correct original version of the MSO.DLL file to copy onto your system. These files aren’t downloaded from elsewhere on the internet and are taken straight from the relevant Office CD, simply unzip the file and copy it to the correct folder in “Microsoft SharedOfficeXX” given above.
Download MSO.DLL for Office XP.
Download MSO.DLL for Office 2003
Download MSO.DLL for Office 2007
Download MSO.DLL for Office 2010
Download MSO.DLL for Office 2013
We know pirating software is bad, but Microsoft has started to teach pirates a lesson by giving such annoyances as the Windows XP Black Screen to some users who may not even realize that they have a pirated version of Office installed by a computer shop?

Hi Robin,
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
- Log on to the computer by using an Administrator user account.
- Start Microsoft Windows Explorer.
- On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
- Click the View tab.
- Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
- Click to clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK.
- Open the following folder:
C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoftOfficeData
- If you are running Office 2003, right-click Opa11.dat, and then click Properties. If you are running Office XP, right-click Data.dat,
and then click Properties. - Click the Security tab.
- Click Advanced.
- Click the Permissions tab.
- Click to select Everyone in the Permission entries list, and then click Edit.
- Click to select the Full Control check box.
- Click OK three times.
If these steps do not resolve this issue, delete the Opa11.dat file or the Data.dat file from the following folder, and then restart an Office 2003 program or an Office XP program
C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoftOfficeData

Hi Guys,
I am a computer idiot, running XP Home Edition with Office 2003. It has
all been working fine for the last few months, but when I open up Word I
recieve the error that:
‘Microsoft Office Word has not been installed for the current user.
Please run setup to install the application’
I removed all traces of Office, but it’s still there on reinstilation.
All of these actions were taken from the Admin account. Oddly, whilst
it doesnt work on the admin account, it works fine on the restricted
use accounts.
I understand its something to do with permissions, but could someone
give me a simple guide as to what to do to solve it?
Cheers,
Thone00

I have tried EVERYTHING possible to fix this issue, and then finally found the solution! Here it is, if you follow this, you will not have anymore problems with this error!
***THIS FIX WAS ONLY TESTED WITH XP USING OFFICE 2K3, BUT SHOULD WORK ON OTHERS***
1) Create a Windows Account with full control admin rights, and then go ahead and log into that new account.
2) When under the newly created account, open every Office product you have, then close one at a time (Excel, Word, PP, etc…)
3) After opening every Office App, go into the registry editor (Start | Run, then type in Regedit)
4) Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER | Software | Microsoft | Office, and highlight Office
5) Then right click on Office, and go to Export, save the .reg file to somewhere you will be able to find it (Root of C: for me)
6) Log off your temp Windows account, and log back in under your normal Windows account that was giving you the error.
7) Open regedit again, and then go to File | Import and pick the file that was exported.
After it says that it was successfully imported, go ahead and try the app that was giving you problems.
Now it should work, just like it did for me. Also, remember you delete the temp account that you created!!
If this works for you, contact me at (e-mail address removed) and let me know what you think. Also, if you need more clarification about this, you can also contact me.

Please follow the directions below and it will all be good again in no time.
1. Log on to system as local administrator
2. Open My computer and change the view (under tools > Folder Options > View) to show hidden files and folders.
3. Now change directory to C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoftOfficeData
4. Delete the files OPA12.dat & OPA12.bak (in some computers you may see OPA11 instead of OPA12. That is okay delete whatever 11 or 12 that you see there)
5. Restart the Word Program.
6. It will install and recreate those files (which got corrupted) again.
7. At the end please don’t forget to change the View of the files to HIDE the hidden files and folder on step 2.
