Word girl in japanese

If you want to learn how to say girl in Japanese, then you’ve come to the right place. I’m not only going to tell you how, but I’m probably going to overload you with all of the different ways to do so too!

Unlike English, the Japanese language can be precise (excruciatingly so at times) with the words that it uses. For example, in English we only have the one word for “I” when speaking about oneself. But Japanese literally has dozens!

It’s a similar situation with girls. Today I’m going to share 13 Japanese words with you that you can use to say girl!

For a lot of these types of words, the nuances often get lost when translating them into English. That’s why there are so many to go over today, you’re going to get a look at how each one is different.

Using 女 For Girl

The Japanese word 女 (onna) means “woman; girl” and can be a little ambiguous since it really means “female” more that a specific age of the lady in question.

That’s why a distinction is often made with this word. For adult women, it is usually extended out to the word 女の人 (onna no hito) which literally says “an adult female.”

Knowing this, you can probably guess how to form the word for “a child female” in Japanese. It is 女の子 (onna no ko) and is usually the first word that people learn for girl in Japanese when they start studying the language.

This word can actually be shortened to just 女子 (joshi) by removing that の particle and it still retains its meaning of girl. To make matters even more confusing, you can also flip these kanji to form the word 子女 (jisho) which can also meaning girl!

I like to keep things simple when speaking and writing in Japanese, so I recommend sticking to 女の子 over these last two options, but there is another word that is actually more common to hear in Japanese.

The word is 少女 (shoujo) and refers to a little girl, but the age range is kind of wide at 7 to 18 years old. This word gets used a lot in anime, and it also happens to be a genre of anime and manga, so you’ll get a lot out of understanding what it means.

The final word that I want to go over in this section is 乙女 (otome) which is very similar to the English word “maiden.” It’s not a super common word, but in certain contexts it makes sense to use it.

Compound Words With 女

A compound word is when you take two separate words and combine them to form a new, third word. In English, there are people who skate for fun. Some of the do so on a board. Thus, we have the compound word skateboard.

In Japanese, one such word is 女生徒 (joseito) which means schoolgirl and combines our earlier kanji for female with the Japanese word for student.

The next word is related to the Japanese word for “beautiful” which is 美しい (utsukushii). What they’ve done is taken that initial kanji and attached it to a word for girl to form 美少女 (bishoujo) which means “beautiful girl” in Japanese.

Lastly, we can talk about “magical girls” which is a pretty common thing in Japan with shows like Sailor Moon and Madoka Magica. The Japanese word for these kinds of girls is 魔法少女 (mahou shoujo) which uses our word for 7-18 year old girls and combines it with the word for magic.

When “Daughter” Means Girl

One of the Japanese words for daughter (yes, there are many!) is 娘 (musume). But this word can also be used in another context where it doesn’t actually refer to someone’s daughter, but instead refers to a young, unmarried woman.

Similarly, the word お嬢さん (ojousan) means “young lady” in Japanese, and also has that connotation of a girl who is currently single. That being said, this word has kind of a fancy feel to it.

I usually hear it from a butler talking to the young lady he serves. Because of this, お嬢さん or any of its various forms (like 嬢ちゃん) gets used in Japanese like “rich girl” would in English.

Similar to the first word in this section, the Japanese word for older sister is (onēsan) お姉さん and it can be used to address a lady, someone in her teens to young adult age, when you don’t know her name.

The English Loan Word

The last word that I want to cover in this post comes from the English language and it is ガール (gāru). This word literally says “girl” in Japanese and is a loan word.

I don’t hear this word all that often, except for maybe in the other Japanese word ガールフレンド (gāru furendo) which means “girlfriend” of course.

But I just wanted to throw it in here for fun.

Is That Really it?

For the most part, you should be good now. There are still more Japanese words that can be used when talking about girls, but you should know enough so that you understand nearly all of the situations where people are talking about girls.

I’m sure that with the information learned here, you will also be able to recognize any new words you run into that talk about girls. The big thing to keep in mind is when the word 女 gets combined with another, it is almost always talking about some sort of girl.

After a while you begin to get used to it, so it stops being such a chore, but I can totally remember being overwhelmed myself the first couple times I tried to understand all of it.

What about you? Which of these words have you run into the most? Where there any words I missed? Let me know with a comment below!

The Japanese word for girl is 女子 (joshi). As with the Japanese word for boy, there are several other words for girl in Japanese that changes depending on the girl’s age and life stage.

Let’s look at the other ways to say girl in Japanese and how and when to use them.

1. 女の子 (Onna No Ko) – A Little Girl, Young Lady

In Japanese, the phrase 女の子 (onna no ko) refers to a young girl. Just as in English, the exact age of a “girl” is ambiguous. However, most people would agree that using 女の子 to refer to someone over 18 can be a little strange. The only time onna no ko might be used when referring to an adult woman might be if an older person who knew the woman from the time she was a little girl is speaking about her. Otherwise, onna no ko should only be used for young girls and babies.

Examples:

1. That little girl on the swing over there is my daughter.
あそこでブランコに乗っている女の子は私の娘です。
(Asoko de buranko ni notte iru onna no ko wa watashi no musume desu.)

2. A girl, about 5 years old, got lost and is looking for her mother.
5才くらいの女の子が迷子になってお母さんを探しています。
(Gosai kurai no onna no ko ga maigo ni natte okāsan o sagashite imasu.)

3. There are five girls in our class.
うちのクラスには、女の子が5人います。
(Uchi no kurasu ni wa, onna no ko ga go nin imasu.)

4. When Karen was a junior high school student, she was a very quiet girl, wasn’t she?
中学生の時、カレンはとても静かな女の子だったよね。
(Chūgakusei no toki, Karen wa totemo shizuka na onna no ko datta yo ne.)

2. 少女 (Shōjo) – A Young or Juvenile Girl

Shōjo is the Japanese word for a girl in her preteens or teens (around 7 to 17 years old). However, the word shōjo is a bit formal and not used as often in conversations as other words for girl in Japanese. Shōjo also refers to any young adult media aimed at preteen or teenage girls, such as 少女マンガ (shōjo manga).

Examples:

1. Miki became a fine young girl.
ミキは立派な少女になりました。
(Miki wa rippa na shōjo ni narimashita.)

2. This drama is clearly aimed at young girls.
このドラマは明らかに少女向けです。
(Kono dorama wa akiraka ni shōjo muke desu.)

3. 女子 (Joshi) – A Girl, An Adolescent Girl

Joshi is the most generally used term for girl in Japanese. It’s the term you will hear most often in the news, and all girls’ schools are referred to as 女子校 (joshi kō). More specifically, however, joshi refers to adolescent girls around the age of 8 to18.

Examples:

1. Sweets that have matcha in it are popular among young girls.
抹茶を使ったスイーツが女子の間で人気です。
(Maccha o tsukatta suītsu ga joshi no aida de ninki desu.)

2. There are 8 girls and 10 boys in the class I teach.
私が教えているクラスには、女子が8人、男子が10人います。
(Watashi ga oshiete iru kurasu niwa, joshi ga hachi-nin, danshi ga jū-nin imasu.)

4. お姉さん (Onēsan) – A Girl (Casual)

While お姉さん (onēsan) means older sister in Japanese, it’s also used as a casual word for girls and young women. Japanese people* use onēsan when referring to a waitress, a girl they might be familiar with, or even young female strangers (since they don’t know their name yet).  The word is mainly used in casual situations and usually only by people who are older than the girl in question.

*Note: While many people use onēsan to refer to a young woman, it is usually used by older men (middle aged to seniors) and elderly women.

Example:

A very kind girl found my wallet.
とても親切なお姉さんが私の財布を見つけてくれました。
(Totemo shinsetsu na onēsan ga watashi no saifu o mitsukete kuremashita.)

5. 美人 (Bijin) – A Beautiful Girl/Woman

This term doesn’t technically mean “girl.” Rather it is a word to refer to a girl who is beautiful.  In Japanese, 美人 (bijin) is used to describe a gorgeous girl. It can be used for women of all ages, but usually for adult women. The polite suffix さん (san) can be added to this word as well: 美人さん (bijin san)

This can be used either as a direct compliment or when speaking about the girl in question. It’s more commonly used as a friendly complement and not as a flirtatious line—although there are always exceptions to this rule.

Examples:

1. That’s my neighbor’s daughter. She’s goregous!
あの人は隣の家の娘さんです。とても美人(さん)ですね!
(Ano hito wa tonari no ie no musume san desu. Totemo bijin (san) desu ne!

2. The director’s wife is very beautiful.
部長の奥さんはとても美人(さん)ですね。
(Buchō no okusan wa totemo bijin (san) desu ne.)

6. 美女 (Bijo) – A Beautiful Girl/Woman

This 美女 (bijo) means the same thing as 美人 (bijin) above: a beautiful girl or woman. You may notice that 美女 (bijo) is used more in media. The famous story “Beauty and the Beast” is translated to 美女と野獣 (Bijo to Yajū) in Japanese. As you may have guessed, 美女 is a beautiful woman, and 野獣 is a wild beast.

7. 美少女 (Bishōjo) – A Beautiful/Pretty Girl

If you notice, 美少女 (bishōjo) contains the characters 美 and 女, which, when put together, form 美女 (bijo): a beautiful girl or woman (as explained above). The only difference is the 少 (shō) character in the middle, which means small or a few. Literally translated, 美少女 would be “beautiful small woman.” In other words, a “beautiful girl.” This word is also often used in media, especially in things like manga, anime, or even games.

Conclusion

There are plenty of ways to say girl in Japanese, but a few of them may depend on how old the girl in question is. If you don’t know which of these words fits best, the safest choice is 女子 (joshi), or perhaps 少女 (shōjo) in formal situations. How do you say girl in your language? Let us know in the comments!

You probably recognize the kanji for woman/female, 女, but how do you say ‘girl’ in Japanese?

There are several words for ‘girl’ in Japanese and many of you know that this is because Japanese has formal and informal ways of describing people.

For example, even though the kanji just mentioned for ‘woman’ is onna / 女, it’s quite rude to use this term in conversation. A more appropriate word would be josei / 女性 or onna no hito / 女の人.

Many words for ‘girl’ in Japanese are compound words which feature the same kanji for woman/female, 女, but there are a few which use completely different characters.

Here we will go over the most common ways to say girl in Japanese and in which context they are used.

  1. Joshi
  2. Onna no ko
  3. Shoujo
  4. Gaaru
  5. Ojousama / ojousan
  6. Ojouchan / Jouchan

Joshi

女子

Girl

If you need to use the word ‘girl’ in everyday conversation, joshi would be the best way. Joshi / 女子 features two kanji:

  • 女: meaning woman, women, female
  • 子: meaning child (you may recognize it from the word kodomo / 子供: children)

As the kanji suggests, joshi literally translates to ‘female child’ and is the noun for ‘girl’ in Japanese. Nouns in Japanese do not distinguish singular and plural, so you can use joshi to refer to a ‘girl’ or ‘girls’, depending on the context.

For example:

Kono kurasu ni joshi wa juugo nin iru.
このクラスに女子は15人いる。
この くらす に じょし は じゅうご にん いる。
There are 15 girls in this class.

When used as a plural to refer to more than one girl, joshi can also be used for women in general (and not just young women) for example:

Kono kaisha wa joshi no juugyouin ga ooi.
この会社は女子の従業員が多い。
このかいしゃはじょしのじゅうぎょういんがおいい。
There are a lot of female employees in this company.

When referring to an individual female, however, joshi means a girl.

Unlike the next word on the list, joshi cannot be used for babies.

Onna no ko

女の子

Girl (Baby to teens)

Onna no ko / 女の子 features the exact same kanji as joshi / 女子 with the addition of the no / の particle in between.

This gives onna no ko a slightly more casual nuance but they are almost identical and can be used interchangeably.

Another difference between joshi and onna no ko is that onna no ko is used specifically to refer to baby girls too.

Onna no ko ga umareta.
女の子が生まれた。
おんなのこがうまれた。
A baby girl was born.

You wouldn’t say joshi ga umareta.

Shoujo

少女

Young woman / girl (Roughly 7 – 18 years old)

Shoujo / 少女 features two kanji:

  • 少: small, little, tiny
  • 女: female/woman/women

Shoujo literally translates to ‘small woman’ but means ‘young woman’, and is a polite and formal way to refer to girls. When people use the word shoujo they are usually referring to the age of adolescence (teenagers) but can be used for females between the ages of 7 and 18.

Shoujo is more of a literary word and is not used often in daily conversation like onna no ko and joshi. In formal written language like in news articles, you may see the word shoujo / 少女 being used instead:

Jyuusan sai shoujo shissou.
13歳少女失踪.
じゅうさんさいしょうじょしっそう。
The disappearance of a 13 year old girl.

You may have seen shoujo / 少女 used to refer to manga targeted at a teen female audience known as shoujo manga / 少女漫画. Even though the term is used for a specific age group, shoujo manga can be read by women (and men) of any age!

Gaaru

ガール

Girl (romanized)

Gaaru (ガール) is the foreign loan word in Japanese borrowed directly from the English ‘girl’ but with Japanese pronunciation using katakana.

Gaaru is a casual word. It’s most often used to facilitate communication, for example when a Japanese native speaker wants to say the word ‘girl’ to an English speaker or non-Japanese person.

Gaaru is not to be confused with the similar sounding word gyaru (ギャル) which is a slang word meaning ‘gal’ or ‘gurl’ and refers to a Japanese fashion subculture which started in the 1970s.

Ojousama / ojousan

お嬢様 / お嬢さん

Young lady

The word ojou actually means ‘someone else’s daughter’ in Japanese but the words ojousama and ojousan are respectful ways to refer to a girl, similar to saying ‘a young lady’ in English.

They are honorific terms but also sound more distant, and are used in situations where the speaker wants to show respect, whether it’s because of their age or social distance.

Ojousama and ojousan are part of formal Japanese language known as keigo because of the honorific prefix O / お and suffixes sama / 様 and san / さん as in o-jou-sama and o-jou-san

What’s the difference between them? They are both polite, but Ojousama is the honorific form. Using these words would mean you consider the girl you are talking to of a high-status (perhaps higher than yourself) which is why they sometimes give the impression of a wealthy or esteemed girl.

For example, from an older woman towards someone else’s daughter:

Ojou sama no doresu ga hanayaka desu ne.
お嬢様のドレスが華やかですね。
おじょうさまのどれすがはなやかですね。
The young lady’s dress is gorgeous.

In anime, ojousama and ojousan are typically used to address wealthy, high-class female characters.

Ojouchan / Jouchan

お嬢ちゃん / 嬢ちゃん

Little girl

An affectionate yet respectful way to address a girl is ojouchan. As you can see, it shares the the same kanji for jou in ojousama/ojousan (嬢)but the use of the honorific suffix chan / ちゃん instead of sama or san immediately softens the nuance.

Though ojouchan sounds a little old-fashioned and is not common, it is used by an older person to address a young girl in a distant yet respectful way.

Situations where ojouchan might be used is between strangers to show a friendly distance. For example, if an elderly man saw a little girl and her mother walking together on the street and the little girl dropped something, he might pick it up and say:

Ojouchan ga kore wo otoshita.
お嬢ちゃんがこれを落とした
おじょうちゃんがこれをおとした
The little lady dropped this.

As you can see, there are many different words for girl in Japanese! Although it might seem overwhelming at first, you will see that many of these words have the same roots. Learning kanji will help with this.

It is also stated that such attitude as intending to neutralize humans by denying differences between men and women, eliminating masculinity and femininity or distinction of sex, and that negation of a family or cultural traditions like the Girls Festival (HINAMATSURI) are different from a gender-equal society which citizens strive for.
