The New York Times defines Spelling Bee, its popular daily word game, as «a puzzle in which players try to make words from a set of seven unique letters while using the center letter at least once.» But Spelling Bee’s loyal fan base is more likely to define it as «a lifestyle.»

Unfortunately, Spelling Bee only offers one puzzle a day—leaving us obsessives hungry for more vocabulary building exercises. Luckily, there are tons of other fun word game apps for iPhones, iPads, and Android smartphones that will sate our cravings. Adults and seniors will find the brain-twister Alpha Omega a challenge (in the best way), and kids will be drawn to AlphaBear’s adorable graphics. Those looking for a game night with pals should head straight to Words With Friends or Letterpress.

These brain-building games have more benefits than whittling away boredom. A 2019 study completed by U.K. researches showed that individuals who frequently completed crossword and Sudoku puzzles had sharper performance «across a range of tasks assessing memory, attention, and reasoning.» Essentially, these word game apps might just make you smarter, one puzzle at a time.

Below, find some of our favorite options, complete with links to download. Since most of them are free, you can try them out before committing to in-app purchases.

Word games fit perfectly with the on-the-go nature of mobile gaming. They’re easy to pick up whenever you feel like exercising your brain, but they’re also fairly easy to put down when you need to get back to the real world.

The main draw of word games is that they’re great for sharpening your vocabulary, but the gameplay itself can also add to the fun. Because of this, there’s no shortage of word games on both Google Play and the iOS App Store, so we decided to create a list of the best free word games that are available for both iPhone and Android.

To make this list, we set up some ground rules. All games had to be free, and we prioritized ones where you can progress without having to make in-app purchases. We also made sure that they were all free of full-screen ads and had at least a four-star rating on both mobile app stores. This ruled out Scrabble, the word gaming giant, as it had weak ratings due to obtrusive ads. That said, here are our picks.

1. Crossword

Crossword puzzles have long dominated the word game scene and were the go-to for fans of the genre long before smartphones came into play. As such, the aptly-named Crossword is sure to please, with its wide selection of word puzzles of varying difficulty that cater to both novices and experts.

One of the game’s best features is its ability to highlight and lock in correct answers, so you never have to worry about second guessing. Hints can also be used to reveal either letters or whole words for those times when the clues have you stumped.

Controls are intuitive in Crossword — simply tap on a block to change typing orientation from vertical to horizontal, then use the game’s built-in keyboard to type away. Aside from the option of removing ads for a price of $4.99, Crossword offers no additional in-app purchases. Even then, ads only appear in between puzzles and are largely out of the way.

2. Word Cookies

Word Cookies is a great single-player game that has you create a number of words from a set of given letters. Controls are simple — just swipe your finger around the letters in the pot to form words. When you beat a level or come up with extra words that aren’t part of the puzzle, you’ll be rewarded with coins that can buy hints if you ever get stuck.

There are in-app purchases, but only for buying coins that you can trade in for hints, or for removing ads at a one-time price of $1.99. Though ads are a constant presence in Word Cookies, they do not interfere with gameplay in any way, usually popping up in between levels, in addition to a banner on the bottom while playing.

3. Alphabear

Alphabear is a great game that has you clear letter-laden fields by cobbling them together to make words. This, in turn, gives your bears room to grow bigger, earning you points in the process.

Similar to Scrabble, points are assigned to the different letters. However, you only have a set amount of turns before the letters expire and solidify. Once they’re set in place, unused letters will block a bear’s path and keep it from growing, so be sure to prioritize the ones with the fewest turns left.

Various objectives must be met depending on what stage you’re in, from time-based play where you quickly form as many words as you can, to a more leisurely standard play with no time restrictions. There’s also a «Versus» mode where you can compete with friends and top each other’s scores to see who’s best.

Alphabear uses its own proprietary dictionary which is continually updated, and ads are practically non-existent, but they can be viewed if you want to earn additional rewards.

4. Word Search

Word Search is another simple game that has you hunt down and cross off words in a table of letters. When you solve a puzzle, you’ll earn coins that you can use for hints whenever you find yourself lost in the alphabet jumble. Hints will also appear and make connecting letters flash during extended periods of inactivity.

Be careful, though, as some stages have letters that disappear if you take too long while looking for words, which can throw you off and even render a puzzle unsolvable. There are no in-app purchases in Word Search, but unobtrusive ads are occasionally shown in between puzzles.

5. Wordscapes

With its relaxing nature theme, Wordscapes has you solve word puzzles against picturesque backdrops. Similar to a fill-in-style crossword puzzle, just swipe to make letters into words that fill themselves into the grid above. The tiles cross over each other, which makes it a little easier to figure out subsequent words.

Once you complete a set of puzzles, you are rewarded with coins that can be used to buy hints when you get stuck. You can also form extra words that aren’t part of the puzzle to earn hints, which convert to coins when left unused.

You have the option of permanently removing ads for $2.99, but they are unobtrusive and only appear in between stages, which keeps their irritation factor to a minimum. Overall, Wordscapes is just challenging enough to be interesting, but when you combine that with its beautiful ambiance, it’s definitely a worthy download.

6. Wordmint

Wordmint is a fast-paced game that has you move randomly-generated letter tiles around to mint words. Each letter has its own value like Scrabble, but you can also cross words together to rack up more points.

You can choose either timed or move-based gameplay, and both modes are pretty challenging. As far as dictionaries go, Wordmint uses Letterpress, Wiktionary, and SOWPODS as sources for words that you can mint in the game.

Wordmint offers no in-app purchases, but it does have ads that pop up every so often between game sessions. The ads are minimal, though, and don’t affect overall gameplay in any way. If you love intense word games on the go, then Wordmint is definitely worth a try.

7. WordBrain

WordBrain is another great game for those who prefer to play in solitude. The premise is fairly simple — just swipe through blocks of letters to form one or more words. But don’t let that fool you because the game can be quite challenging.

The stages are animal-themed, and they get more demanding as you progress through each level — especially as you hit puzzles that let you create 10 or more words of varying lengths. Thankfully, you are rewarded with hints as you finish each animal stage, which you can then use whenever you’re stuck.

WordBrain also has a nifty feature that lets you create your own puzzles to share with friends. As a free game, there are ads in between levels that vary based on time. For instance, an ad will appear after taking a long time on one puzzle, but it won’t appear for another three puzzles if you breeze through. They are easy to close, however, and don’t affect gameplay in any way.

8. Four Letters

Four Letters is a pretty intense word game despite its simplicity. You’ll have to form a word using only four letters, then quickly repeat this process as many times as you can while forming different words each time.

You only have a set amount of time to complete each puzzle, and the game will end if you can’t come up with enough words before time expires. You’ll need to be very quick on your feet, so to speak, if you want to progress far in this game.

There is a total of 2,473 words to complete, with each word being added to the in-game dictionary once you’ve formed it. Achievements are also available to keep you motivated as the game kicks you in your behind. Ads pop up here and there, and are relatively out of the way, though you can remove them for $2.99.

Word Connect will keep your brain occupied as you swipe between the various letters to assemble words. Naturally, the puzzles get increasingly more difficult as you progress, making you form more and more words out of the random combination of letters provided.

You are rewarded with coins as you complete chapters and solve bonus words, which you can then use to buy hints. There are no time limits to worry about while playing Word Connect, which makes for challenging, yet relaxing gameplay.

Ads are unobtrusive and appear in between levels, with an option to get rid of them for good as part of a package to buy extra coins, which starts at $0.99. All in all, Word Connect is a great option for fans of word games who lead busy lives but still enjoy word puzzles in their downtime.

10. Words with Friends Classic

Words With Friends Classic is the quintessential multiplayer word game that’s become a staple on millions of mobile devices. It’s actually an updated version of the original Words With Friends game, only slightly improved and with no option to remove ads. The Scrabble-like game has you battle friends and family to see who can make the most use of special tiles to rack up the points. It also has the benefit of looking aesthetically better than its Scrabble counterpart.

One of the best aspects of this game is the fact that you can set your own pace as you play with someone, resulting in matches that can last for days. There are more than 173,000 acceptable words that you can use to score big in the game, which are drawn from the Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon, or ENABLE, for short. However, some words have been added or removed based on user feedback.

WWF Classic will let you play with anyone, regardless of if they’re using iOS or Android. It’s available in Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, and both US and UK English. Though ads are present and regularly appear at each turn’s end, the game’s slow nature makes them tolerable. There’s also a solo play mode if you want to fine-tune your skills before taking on some serious competition. So if you haven’t tried Words With Friends Classic, now is as good a time as any to give it a shot.

11. Hangman Free

Hangman Free is a great way to relive your childhood on your smartphone. Just like I remember, it’s thrilling to solve a word with a single letter left while being one leg away from kicking the bucket from under a poor stick figure on the gallows.

There are settings for difficulty, along with categories like food, holidays, animals, and geography, to ensure a high replay value for anyone, regardless of their vocabulary skill. The game also comes with a two-player mode which has you come out with your own word for your loved one to guess, and vice versa, to see who can get a higher score.

The two-player mode can only be played with one device, however, and requires you to pass your smartphone to your opponent once your turn ends. Though seemingly limited, it actually serves to make friends or family interact with each other more in person, as opposed to having that sense of detachment that’s all too common with multiplayer mobile games. This aspect makes Hangman Free a great choice with close friends, as well as an awesome way for parents to introduce this classic game to their kids.

This is the fatured image for the best word games, word puzzle games, and word search games for android

Words games are enjoyable because they are simple. There are a variety of word games. You can find words within a massive jumble of letters, unscramble anagrams, or fill in crossword puzzles. You can find all of those experiences along with some rather unique ones on mobile. There are quite a few options. However, many of them are copies of one another or don’t deliver a ton of actual content. We tried our best to sift through and find the best ones. There are official releases for classic word games like Scrabble Go (Google Play link), but the mobile versions often leave a lot to be desired. You can also find a bunch of Wordle variants in the Play Store, but they’re usually riddled with ads, which makes us sad.

In any case, here are the best word games, word puzzle games, and word search games for Android. If you need some help, we recommend checking out these anagram solvers and these cross solvers.

The best word games for Android

  1. Bonza Word Puzzle
  2. Crossword Puzzle by Redstone
  3. Hex Words
  4. Letterpress
  5. Ruzzle
  1. Stick Terms
  2. Wordscapes
  3. Wordfued
  4. Words With Friends 2
  5. Word Yarn

Bonza Word Puzzle

Price: Free with in-app purchases

Bonza Word Puzzle is an interesting hybrid between crossword and puzzle genres. Players get a clue and a bunch of letters all jumbled up. You arrange several different words by connecting the puzzle pieces together. It’s simple, fun, and it gets challenging occasionally. Players get the starter pack and two puzzle packs for free. You can unlock more with the coins you earn from doing packs or you can buy them with in-app purchases. We really appreciate the lack of a subscription price with this one and it’s also kid-friendly. We have no major complaints although some reviewers do have the occasional bug.

Crossword Puzzle by Redstone

Price: Free / Up to $4.99

Crossword Free screenshot 2021

Joe Hindy / Android Authority

Crossword Puzzle by Redstone is, well, a crossword puzzle app with a bunch of free content. It works like a crossword puzzle probably should. You get a bunch of clues and you type in the answers. The app has easy, medium, and hard difficulties along with free packs of crosswords on a weekly basis. You can always purchase more via in-app purchases as well. The game also provides hints and controls for easily removing mistakes or skipping cells with letters while entering an answer. It’s even available offline. We honestly couldn’t find anything wrong with it. It’s a good, simple crossword puzzle game.

Hex Words is a competitive word game. You start with a bunch of letters in a hexagon shape on your phone. You tap the letters to form words as fast as you can. There is also an adventure mode where you find six related words to complete the challenge and the puzzle. We like this one because it’s minimal, free, and has no advertising. The colors of the puzzles are splashy and fun as well. There’s very little wrong with this one considering its price tag and target audience.

Letterpress

Price: Free / $4.99

Letterpress screenshot 2023

Letterpress is another unique word puzzle game. It’s kind of like a much more intense version of Boggle. You and another player go head to head with a five-by-five grid of letters. Each letter fills in with your color when you create words. The game ends when you fill in every letter with a color. There are some rules in there, but it’s actually a fairly challenging game.

You can play with other people or with one of four bots. The game also comes with some of the tamest ads we’ve ever seen, support for the Oxford Dictionary, bad words, and even a bunch of stats to track your gameplay. The UI is super simple, but the game is surprisingly engaging. We definitely recommend this one. It’s definitely one of the best free word games.

Ruzzle screenshot 2023

Ruzzle is a competitive word-finder game. The goal is to find as many words as you can in two minutes. The winner is the person with the most points. That means you can technically win by having fewer words if your words generate a higher score. It’s a fun little game to play with simple mechanics. You simply select the letters, generate the word, and get points based on the value of each letter. This one is a premium game, so there are no ads to mess with your good time. It’s super rare to find an actively developed premium game that has an online multiplayer.

Sticky Terms is a bit more of a puzzle game than a word game, but each puzzle has words. You start each round with a fragment of a word along with an assortment of shapes and lines. You rotate each shape or line until it becomes part of the word. The round ends when you create a new word. Each word is a word that doesn’t have an equivalent outside of its native language, so you’ll be creating many words you likely haven’t heard of before. The extra bit of educational value makes it a fun time. This game is free with ads.

Wordfued screenshot 2020

Joe Hindy / Android Authority

Wordfued is another online word game. This one plays like Scrabble. You have a selection of letters. Each round, you use those letters to create a word on the board, which gives you points. The game includes a chat function so you can talk to your opponent. Otherwise, it’s basically an online competitive version of Scrabble. There isn’t much else to talk about with this one. We consider that one of the pros of it. It does what it says and we appreciate that.

Wordscapes

Price: Free to play

Wordscapes is kind of a mixture of Boggle and a crossword puzzle. Players get a mix of letters on the bottom of the screen and a crossword-style layout at the top. You swipe letters to form words that fill in the crossword section. The goal is to find all of the words that fit rather than finding every single word. The game includes over 5,000 puzzles (many with themes), simple mechanics, and a couple of different game modes. The game features some rather obnoxious advertising and that makes it less friendly to free players. Otherwise, the experience isn’t half bad.

Words With Friends 2 and other Zynga games

Price: Free to play

Words With Friends 2 is Zynga’s most popular word game. It plays basically just like Scrabble. You and another player get some letters. You place them on a board to generate points. The player with the most points wins the game. This is a full online multiplayer experience, but you can play solo if you want to. The gameplay itself is perfectly fine and looks good.

You can remove ads, but it costs $10 per 30 days and we think that’s kind of awful. The freemium aspects of it aren’t overly gratifying either. Other than that, it’s a winner. Zynga also has Crossword With Friends, Boggle With Friends, and Draw Something. All three are excellent freemium word games. You can also find an official Scrabble game on Google Play, but this one is better.

Word Yarn

Price: Free to play

Word Yarn - best word games

Word Yard is another simple word game and it’s another mix of Boggle and a crossword puzzle. You get a series of letters and you fill in the crossword section above. The game features hundreds of levels that get more difficult as you go. It also boasts no time limits, support for dozens of languages, full offline support, and more. The game is also kid-friendly because a lot of the early puzzles are ridiculously easy. Those looking for a true challenge may not find this game difficult enough to sate those needs. However, it’s not half bad for a free word game.

If you’re a fan of mobile gaming and want to venture into a different genre, the world of word games may be just what you need to switch things up. Not only are word games a great way to pass the time, but they can also help you improve your vocabulary and mental agility. Unlike other types of Android games that may rely solely on graphics or fast reflexes, word games are all about using your brainpower to solve puzzles and create words.

In this article, we’re sharing some of the best word games available on Android. Whether you’re a crossword puzzle enthusiast, a fan of fast-paced word-building games, or want to challenge other players, there’s something on this list for you. So, grab your favorite tablet and get ready to exercise your brain with the best word games available!

1 Wordfeud Premium

This one is for all of you Scrabble fans out there. Seeing that the official Scrabble contains in-app purchases that range up to $299.99 per item, opting for a clone like Wordfeud is easily the way to go. This is the premium version of Wordfeud, which means it’s a complete package available for a single upfront price. It supports online play, so you can face off against friends and family anytime you want. Sure, you’ll have to convince them to install Wordfeud, but since there is also a free version, anyone can play without going out of pocket.

2 Wordsmyth

Wordle saw the rise in popularity in daily word games and Wordsmyth runs with this theme offering a daily word game that plays like Boggle. Each day a new 3×3 pattern of letters is displayed on your screen, and it’s up to you to find all the words you can create with those letters; the longer the better. What’s nice about this setup is that this is a premium game, so there are no in-app purchases or advertisements. Better yet, there’s no timer, either. You have the whole day to take your time with the puzzle, which makes this a relaxing release you can play throughout your day.

3 Word Collect

This fun and challenging game is all about finding hidden words in a set number of letters that grows as you play. You just swipe your finger across the letters to make a word, and if it’s correct, you score points and move on to the next level. The game contains unobtrusive ads that can be removed for a one-time fee of $10. Word Collect gets harder as you progress, and you can earn coins and bonuses by finding extra words. If you get stuck, you can tap the shuffle or hint button to help you along. You’ll also want to keep progressing so that you can unlock all of its features, like the daily challenge, leaderboard, and league. There’s even a dictionary that you can use to look up the meanings of the words you find to help improve your vocabulary.

4 Wordscapes

Wordscapes has been available on Android since 2017. It’s managed to last longer than most titles, and that probably has something to do with the focus on live service gameplay. The game works like a mix of a crossword puzzle and Boggle, where you’ll create words to fit in the fields at the top of the screen by utilizing the letters at the bottom of your screen. It’s a simple setup that grows challenging fast. In-app purchases are present, though you can pay to remove the game’s advertisements, which is appreciated. More or less, Wordscapes offers enjoyable word-based gameplay, whether you play for free or plan on sinking some funds into the title.

5 supertype

Philipp Stollenmayer’s supertype offers something a little different from the majority of word games in the list. Instead of pulling from your vocabulary to form or find words, you’ll have to place letters on the board so that they fall in a strategic way to collect the many dots scattered around each level. In one instance, you may want to drop an M, since the letter can physically cling onto objects, or maybe you’ll drop a Y so that when you drop an O, it rolls in a specific direction. The choice is yours, which is what makes the game so much fun. Since this is a premium release, there are no free trials or demos. Luckily, the game is excellent, so there’s no need to worry about spending $2.

6 Four Letters

Four Letters takes Boggle and grinds it down to a superfast formula: you’ve got 20 seconds to make a word from four letters, at which point the letters renew. The goal is to take the endless gameplay as far as you can without losing. There are multiple answers to each puzzle, and a leaderboard is included for those who really want to put their word-forming skills to the test. Note that if you swear like a sailor, your favorite four-letter-words are not supported, so you’ll have to keep it clean to play this one.

7 Alphabear: Words Across Time

Spelling words by selecting letters from a grid is easy enough, but things get a little wild once you throw in a bunch of bears. Think if someone combined a word game with the puzzler Threes, and you’re getting close to what Alphabear: Words Across Time has to offer. The goal is to spell words with the letters displayed in the grind on your screen. The larger the word, the better, and as you progress, you’ll unlock cute bears. The bears grow in size as you spell words out of the letters that surround them. The graphics are cute, the monetization is fair (ads are present, but you can pay to remove them), and there are adorable bears to collect. What’s not to like?

8 Letterpress — Word Game

Letterpress is a competitive word game in which players take turns forming words out of the letters available on a board. This board consists of a 5×5 block of letters, and it’s up to each player to find as many words in the group as possible. These words, of course, are worth points, and whoever has the most points at the end of the match wins. If you’d prefer to practice before taking on real-world opponents, you can always battle a bot to get a grip on your skills.

9 Words with Friends 2 Classic

Here’s another game similar to Scrabble where you create words on a board using letter tiles with different point values. You can challenge your friends or other people from all over the world and take turns creating words; plus, you can chat while playing. Words with Friends 2 Classic has some cool features, like power-ups that can help you score more points and hints on where to place your words. There’s also a mode where you can play by yourself, and you can win rewards and participate in themed events. If you want to get even more out of the game, you can purchase a Premium Rewards Pass for $13. Along with some in-game currency items, it includes exclusive tile styles, profile frames, and stickers.

10 Typeshift

Typeshift is a unique puzzle game that mixes anagrams with a crossword puzzle. It comes from the creator of SpellTower. The goal is to find as many words as possible within the supplied columns of letters. You can slide these columns up and down on your screen, and that’s exactly how you form new words from the letters you’re provided. It’s a simple setup that works well. Gameplay accessible to all, which is precisely why Typeshift is so popular.

11 Words for a bird

Bart Bonte is best known for his color games like Red and Black; much like these titles, Words for a bird is an odd game that uses minimal art. It relies on solid gameplay to entertain. The goal in Words for a bird is to figure out the missing word in provided phrases by selecting the letters on your screen. Not all of these letters are used, so you have to think about the solutions a bit. There are a total of 15 puzzles to solve (and that’s it), so this is a short game, but it’s also a fun one.

12 Cryptogram

Cryptogram is a simple word game in which the player is tasked with solving a cryptic message by finding ciphers within the jumbled text. As you uncover hidden letter patterns, you’ll slowly reveal a phrase, which is the goal of the game. Best of all, the app was recently updated to support better backspace behavior, which helps to clear your letters from a selected character.

13 Bonza Word Puzzle

Imagine if someone tore apart a completed crossword puzzle, then asked you to put it back together, piece by piece. That’s Bonza Word Puzzle, which offers a twist on classic crossword puzzle design. Instead of filling in individual letters, it’s your job to mix and match entire sections of a completed crossword puzzle to form full words. The game has a wide variety of themed puzzles, like animals, sports, and movies, so you can test your knowledge in different areas. And if you get stuck, there are hints and word associations to help you out.

14 Kitty Letter

If you’re looking for a word game that’s competitive, Kitty Letter is a fantastic choice. The goal is simple: form words out of the letters provided. The bigger the word, the more armies you add to your side of the board. The words you form are how you attack your opponent, and the first one to form more words to create the largest army wins the whole enchilada. Online gameplay is 1v1, and if you’d like to practice your word-forming skills before jumping into competitive play, there’s also a full single-player campaign available.

15 Word Search Puzzle

Word Search Puzzle offers a classic word search experience in which players are tasked with hunting down words within a large block of letters. There are three difficulty levels to choose from, as well as a few optional modes that include a timer to put more pressure on the player. The game is a pleasure to look at and play, which is probably why it’s already claimed over one million downloads.

16 Cryptogram — Decrypt Quotes

If you’re in the mood for something a little different and are looking for more puzzle-play in your word games, you should check out Cryptogram. There are four difficulty levels to choose from, which should fit most people’s needs, and you can even choose your themes of play, whether you want to tackle subjects you are knowledgeable about or not. So yes, you’ll formulate words by deciphering the encrypted text on the screen, filling out these words to form famous quotes, a word game in every which way, but also a challenging puzzle game.

17 CodyCross: Crossword Puzzles

If you’re a fan of crossword puzzles, you’ll love the gorgeous CodyCross app, where you have to fill in words on a grid based on the provided clues. The game has many different crossword puzzles in lots of different categories like history, science, and pop culture. The puzzles range in difficulty as you progress, and if you get stuck, there are hints and ways to reveal letters or words to help you out. Additionally, you can participate in events and play different game modes to earn even more rewards. In-app purchases range from $2 to $50 for tokens; you can also remove ads for 30 days or subscribe to a monthly Premium subscription for $10. CodyCross is an entertaining way to pass the time and challenge yourself mentally.

18 Ord.

If you’re looking for something that bucks trends, a game that doesn’t offer the typical word game gameplay, then perhaps Ord is what you’re looking for. This is a narrative game that plays like a text-based adventure, and it offers four separate quests that all hinge on your word choices. So say your character is about to wake; you can choose to sleep in or rise. Your choices matter, as the wrong choices can see things go sour pretty fast. So instead of picking and choosing letters to form words like many of the games in today’s roundup, Ord is a game where you’ll choose a word at each interaction to see each story to its end. And yes, there is a definite focus on this text, which is why this is the perfect title for a word game roundup.

19 Word Yard — Fun with Words

Boggle and crossword fans will enjoy Word Yard, as it mashes both genres into one game. You’ll place the letters provided at the bottom of the screen into the crossword-like fields in the center of the screen. It’s an intuitive setup that should appeal to adults and children alike, and the monetization isn’t all that bad either. The biggest annoyance is the game’s ads, but you can pay to remove them, so it’s not a huge deal. What’s nice is that an online connection isn’t needed, which makes this a good game for those who commute.

Are you up for the challenge?

There are so many different types of word games out there that it’s hard not to get excited about them. Whether you’re looking for a quick game to play on your commute or a way to unwind after a long day, word games are the perfect solution. You’ll never be bored with all the different types available, from traditional crossword puzzles to challenging word-building games that require quick thinking and precision.

A lot of people will claim that they don’t like Android word games. Among the wider puzzle genre, it’s very much an acquired taste.

Blame it on Christmas Scrabble marathons, dorky game shows, and the crossword section of your Dad’s stuffed old newspaper. Or maybe it’s simply down to the fact that your brain doesn’t really do words as well as other things.

Whatever the reason, word games are rather a niche, especially compared to match-three puzzlers. But they really shouldn’t be.

Alongside the usual scramble games, there’s a rich and growing field of other titles that centre on words, but that doesn’t feel like you’re doing your homework.

We’re talking about clever choose-your-own-adventures, casual party titles, and plenty of oddities that defy categorisation.

supertype

One of the most original Android word games in ages, Supertype adds a physics-based puzzler angle, so the shape and size of the letter make all the difference.

Supertype looks absolutely stunning, and if that plays a role in how you see mobile titles, then this one will definitely make it into your top 10. It’s a little puzzle-ish and that, alongside its clever choice of expressions, makes it a must-play in 2023.

Ord.

A very clever and experimental choose-your-own-adventure where every twist and turn is dictated by a single sparsely animated word. Brilliantly fascinating, this text-based slash-word masterpiece is a must-play in our books.

It’s unlike every other title on this list, but it is, in fact, a part of the genre. You might want to brace yourself before diving in though because it’s probably unlike everything you’ve played so far.

Alphabear 2

Alphabet 2 follows the original game’s lead, asking you to form words in order to create huge bear-like blocks. It’s very cute, very silly, and very moreish.

Are we biased if we say that it’s the best word game for Android ever? Maybe it’s because of the bear — we’re strongly inclined to recommend it to everyone, so if you’re not yet sure whether or not to try it, you can take our word — give it a try!

Kitty Letter

Titles that belong to this genre aren’t typically as riotous as Kitty Letter, which revels in a gleefully frenetic sense of chaos. It has exploding cats. Yes — exploding c-a-t-s.

If that did not convince you (even by spelling it out), then you need to check out the trailer below. It’s a wholesome title, and if you’re looking for more similar ones, feel free to dive into our list of best relaxing Android games! There’s definitely something in there for you.

A tastefully minimalist expression jumble that tasks you with dragging out words in all directions. The twist is, you can only use each letter once, and must use as many as possible.

This title is pretty similar to others featured in our list, but we’re positive you will find it interestingly unique thanks to its single-use letter feature. It’s a tad more challenging than the previously mentioned ones.

Did we say Words With Friends was the most recognisable title on this list? That was silly of us. Scrabble is clearly the king of the genre and the inspiration for many of the other word games for Android.

You cannot essentially make a list like this one without remotely mentioning Scrabble — at least once. It has fascinated the world through its board game form and is now conquering the online with its digital form. The bright side of that? You cannot misplace the pieces!
