If you’ve got the right letter in the right spot, it will show up in green. When a letter is correct but placed incorrectly, it will show up in yellow. The letter will be grey if it is not used at all in the word.

Whether you’re a crossword puzzle enthusiast, a fan of fast-paced word-building games, or want to challenge other players, there’s something on this list for you. So, grab your favorite tablet and get ready to exercise your brain with the best word games available!
1 Wordfeud Premium
This one is for all of you Scrabble fans out there. Seeing that the official Scrabble contains in-app purchases that range up to $299.99 per item, opting for a clone like Wordfeud is easily the way to go. This is the premium version of Wordfeud, which means it’s a complete package available for a single upfront price. It supports online play, so you can face off against friends and family anytime you want. Sure, you’ll have to convince them to install Wordfeud, but since there is also a free version, anyone can play without going out of pocket.
2 Wordsmyth
Wordle saw the rise in popularity in daily word games and Wordsmyth runs with this theme offering a daily word game that plays like Boggle. Each day a new 3×3 pattern of letters is displayed on your screen, and it’s up to you to find all the words you can create with those letters; the longer the better. What’s nice about this setup is that this is a premium game, so there are no in-app purchases or advertisements. Better yet, there’s no timer, either. You have the whole day to take your time with the puzzle, which makes this a relaxing release you can play throughout your day.
3 Word Collect
This fun and challenging game is all about finding hidden words in a set number of letters that grows as you play. You just swipe your finger across the letters to make a word, and if it’s correct, you score points and move on to the next level. The game contains unobtrusive ads that can be removed for a one-time fee of $10. Word Collect gets harder as you progress, and you can earn coins and bonuses by finding extra words. If you get stuck, you can tap the shuffle or hint button to help you along. You’ll also want to keep progressing so that you can unlock all of its features, like the daily challenge, leaderboard, and league. There’s even a dictionary that you can use to look up the meanings of the words you find to help improve your vocabulary.
4 Wordscapes
Wordscapes has been available on Android since 2017. It’s managed to last longer than most titles, and that probably has something to do with the focus on live service gameplay. The game works like a mix of a crossword puzzle and Boggle, where you’ll create words to fit in the fields at the top of the screen by utilizing the letters at the bottom of your screen. It’s a simple setup that grows challenging fast. In-app purchases are present, though you can pay to remove the game’s advertisements, which is appreciated. More or less, Wordscapes offers enjoyable word-based gameplay, whether you play for free or plan on sinking some funds into the title.
5 supertype
Philipp Stollenmayer’s supertype offers something a little different from the majority of word games in the list. Instead of pulling from your vocabulary to form or find words, you’ll have to place letters on the board so that they fall in a strategic way to collect the many dots scattered around each level. In one instance, you may want to drop an M, since the letter can physically cling onto objects, or maybe you’ll drop a Y so that when you drop an O, it rolls in a specific direction. The choice is yours, which is what makes the game so much fun. Since this is a premium release, there are no free trials or demos. Luckily, the game is excellent, so there’s no need to worry about spending $2.
6 Four Letters
Four Letters takes Boggle and grinds it down to a superfast formula: you’ve got 20 seconds to make a word from four letters, at which point the letters renew. The goal is to take the endless gameplay as far as you can without losing. There are multiple answers to each puzzle, and a leaderboard is included for those who really want to put their word-forming skills to the test. Note that if you swear like a sailor, your favorite four-letter-words are not supported, so you’ll have to keep it clean to play this one.
7 Alphabear: Words Across Time
Spelling words by selecting letters from a grid is easy enough, but things get a little wild once you throw in a bunch of bears. Think if someone combined a word game with the puzzler Threes, and you’re getting close to what Alphabear: Words Across Time has to offer. The goal is to spell words with the letters displayed in the grind on your screen. The larger the word, the better, and as you progress, you’ll unlock cute bears. The bears grow in size as you spell words out of the letters that surround them. The graphics are cute, the monetization is fair (ads are present, but you can pay to remove them), and there are adorable bears to collect. What’s not to like?
8 Letterpress — Word Game
Letterpress is a competitive word game in which players take turns forming words out of the letters available on a board. This board consists of a 5×5 block of letters, and it’s up to each player to find as many words in the group as possible. These words, of course, are worth points, and whoever has the most points at the end of the match wins. If you’d prefer to practice before taking on real-world opponents, you can always battle a bot to get a grip on your skills.
9 Words with Friends 2 Classic
Here’s another game similar to Scrabble where you create words on a board using letter tiles with different point values. You can challenge your friends or other people from all over the world and take turns creating words; plus, you can chat while playing. Words with Friends 2 Classic has some cool features, like power-ups that can help you score more points and hints on where to place your words. There’s also a mode where you can play by yourself, and you can win rewards and participate in themed events. If you want to get even more out of the game, you can purchase a Premium Rewards Pass for $13. Along with some in-game currency items, it includes exclusive tile styles, profile frames, and stickers.
10 Typeshift
Typeshift is a unique puzzle game that mixes anagrams with a crossword puzzle. It comes from the creator of SpellTower. The goal is to find as many words as possible within the supplied columns of letters. You can slide these columns up and down on your screen, and that’s exactly how you form new words from the letters you’re provided. It’s a simple setup that works well. Gameplay accessible to all, which is precisely why Typeshift is so popular.
11 Words for a bird
Bart Bonte is best known for his color games like Red and Black; much like these titles, Words for a bird is an odd game that uses minimal art. It relies on solid gameplay to entertain. The goal in Words for a bird is to figure out the missing word in provided phrases by selecting the letters on your screen. Not all of these letters are used, so you have to think about the solutions a bit. There are a total of 15 puzzles to solve (and that’s it), so this is a short game, but it’s also a fun one.
12 Cryptogram
Cryptogram is a simple word game in which the player is tasked with solving a cryptic message by finding ciphers within the jumbled text. As you uncover hidden letter patterns, you’ll slowly reveal a phrase, which is the goal of the game. Best of all, the app was recently updated to support better backspace behavior, which helps to clear your letters from a selected character.
13 Bonza Word Puzzle
Imagine if someone tore apart a completed crossword puzzle, then asked you to put it back together, piece by piece. That’s Bonza Word Puzzle, which offers a twist on classic crossword puzzle design. Instead of filling in individual letters, it’s your job to mix and match entire sections of a completed crossword puzzle to form full words. The game has a wide variety of themed puzzles, like animals, sports, and movies, so you can test your knowledge in different areas. And if you get stuck, there are hints and word associations to help you out.
14 Kitty Letter
If you’re looking for a word game that’s competitive, Kitty Letter is a fantastic choice. The goal is simple: form words out of the letters provided. The bigger the word, the more armies you add to your side of the board. The words you form are how you attack your opponent, and the first one to form more words to create the largest army wins the whole enchilada. Online gameplay is 1v1, and if you’d like to practice your word-forming skills before jumping into competitive play, there’s also a full single-player campaign available.
15 Word Search Puzzle
Word Search Puzzle offers a classic word search experience in which players are tasked with hunting down words within a large block of letters. There are three difficulty levels to choose from, as well as a few optional modes that include a timer to put more pressure on the player. The game is a pleasure to look at and play, which is probably why it’s already claimed over one million downloads.
16 Cryptogram — Decrypt Quotes
If you’re in the mood for something a little different and are looking for more puzzle-play in your word games, you should check out Cryptogram. There are four difficulty levels to choose from, which should fit most people’s needs, and you can even choose your themes of play, whether you want to tackle subjects you are knowledgeable about or not. So yes, you’ll formulate words by deciphering the encrypted text on the screen, filling out these words to form famous quotes, a word game in every which way, but also a challenging puzzle game.
17 CodyCross: Crossword Puzzles
If you’re a fan of crossword puzzles, you’ll love the gorgeous CodyCross app, where you have to fill in words on a grid based on the provided clues. The game has many different crossword puzzles in lots of different categories like history, science, and pop culture. The puzzles range in difficulty as you progress, and if you get stuck, there are hints and ways to reveal letters or words to help you out. Additionally, you can participate in events and play different game modes to earn even more rewards. In-app purchases range from $2 to $50 for tokens; you can also remove ads for 30 days or subscribe to a monthly Premium subscription for $10. CodyCross is an entertaining way to pass the time and challenge yourself mentally.
18 Ord.
If you’re looking for something that bucks trends, a game that doesn’t offer the typical word game gameplay, then perhaps Ord is what you’re looking for. This is a narrative game that plays like a text-based adventure, and it offers four separate quests that all hinge on your word choices. So say your character is about to wake; you can choose to sleep in or rise. Your choices matter, as the wrong choices can see things go sour pretty fast. So instead of picking and choosing letters to form words like many of the games in today’s roundup, Ord is a game where you’ll choose a word at each interaction to see each story to its end. And yes, there is a definite focus on this text, which is why this is the perfect title for a word game roundup.
19 Word Yard — Fun with Words
Boggle and crossword fans will enjoy Word Yard, as it mashes both genres into one game. You’ll place the letters provided at the bottom of the screen into the crossword-like fields in the center of the screen. It’s an intuitive setup that should appeal to adults and children alike, and the monetization isn’t all that bad either. The biggest annoyance is the game’s ads, but you can pay to remove them, so it’s not a huge deal. What’s nice is that an online connection isn’t needed, which makes this a good game for those who commute.
Are you up for the challenge?
There are so many different types of word games out there that it’s hard not to get excited about them. Whether you’re looking for a quick game to play on your commute or a way to unwind after a long day, word games are the perfect solution. You’ll never be bored with all the different types available, from traditional crossword puzzles to challenging word-building games that require quick thinking and precision.

Words games are enjoyable because they are simple. There are a variety of word games. You can find words within a massive jumble of letters, unscramble anagrams, or fill in crossword puzzles. You can find all of those experiences along with some rather unique ones on mobile. There are quite a few options. However, many of them are copies of one another or don’t deliver a ton of actual content. We tried our best to sift through and find the best ones. There are official releases for classic word games like Scrabble Go (Google Play link), but the mobile versions often leave a lot to be desired. You can also find a bunch of Wordle variants in the Play Store, but they’re usually riddled with ads, which makes us sad.
In any case, here are the best word games, word puzzle games, and word search games for Android. If you need some help, we recommend checking out these anagram solvers and these cross solvers.

Bonza Word Puzzle
Price: Free with in-app purchases
Bonza Word Puzzle is an interesting hybrid between crossword and puzzle genres. Players get a clue and a bunch of letters all jumbled up. You arrange several different words by connecting the puzzle pieces together. It’s simple, fun, and it gets challenging occasionally. Players get the starter pack and two puzzle packs for free. You can unlock more with the coins you earn from doing packs or you can buy them with in-app purchases. We really appreciate the lack of a subscription price with this one and it’s also kid-friendly. We have no major complaints although some reviewers do have the occasional bug.
Crossword Puzzle by Redstone
Price: Free / Up to $4.99

Crossword Puzzle by Redstone is, well, a crossword puzzle app with a bunch of free content. It works like a crossword puzzle probably should. You get a bunch of clues and you type in the answers. The app has easy, medium, and hard difficulties along with free packs of crosswords on a weekly basis. You can always purchase more via in-app purchases as well. The game also provides hints and controls for easily removing mistakes or skipping cells with letters while entering an answer. It’s even available offline. We honestly couldn’t find anything wrong with it. It’s a good, simple crossword puzzle game.
Hex Words is a competitive word game. You start with a bunch of letters in a hexagon shape on your phone. You tap the letters to form words as fast as you can. There is also an adventure mode where you find six related words to complete the challenge and the puzzle. We like this one because it’s minimal, free, and has no advertising. The colors of the puzzles are splashy and fun as well. There’s very little wrong with this one considering its price tag and target audience.
Letterpress
Price: Free / $4.99
Letterpress is another unique word puzzle game. It’s kind of like a much more intense version of Boggle. You and another player go head to head with a five-by-five grid of letters. Each letter fills in with your color when you create words. The game ends when you fill in every letter with a color. There are some rules in there, but it’s actually a fairly challenging game.
You can play with other people or with one of four bots. The game also comes with some of the tamest ads we’ve ever seen, support for the Oxford Dictionary, bad words, and even a bunch of stats to track your gameplay. The UI is super simple, but the game is surprisingly engaging. We definitely recommend this one. It’s definitely one of the best free word games.
Ruzzle is a competitive word-finder game. The goal is to find as many words as you can in two minutes. The winner is the person with the most points. That means you can technically win by having fewer words if your words generate a higher score. It’s a fun little game to play with simple mechanics. You simply select the letters, generate the word, and get points based on the value of each letter. This one is a premium game, so there are no ads to mess with your good time. It’s super rare to find an actively developed premium game that has an online multiplayer.
Sticky Terms is a bit more of a puzzle game than a word game, but each puzzle has words. You start each round with a fragment of a word along with an assortment of shapes and lines. You rotate each shape or line until it becomes part of the word. The round ends when you create a new word. Each word is a word that doesn’t have an equivalent outside of its native language, so you’ll be creating many words you likely haven’t heard of before. The extra bit of educational value makes it a fun time. This game is free with ads.

Wordfued is another online word game. This one plays like Scrabble. You have a selection of letters. Each round, you use those letters to create a word on the board, which gives you points. The game includes a chat function so you can talk to your opponent. Otherwise, it’s basically an online competitive version of Scrabble. There isn’t much else to talk about with this one. We consider that one of the pros of it. It does what it says and we appreciate that.
Wordscapes
Price: Free to play
Wordscapes is kind of a mixture of Boggle and a crossword puzzle. Players get a mix of letters on the bottom of the screen and a crossword-style layout at the top. You swipe letters to form words that fill in the crossword section. The goal is to find all of the words that fit rather than finding every single word. The game includes over 5,000 puzzles (many with themes), simple mechanics, and a couple of different game modes. The game features some rather obnoxious advertising and that makes it less friendly to free players. Otherwise, the experience isn’t half bad.
Words With Friends 2 and other Zynga games
Price: Free to play
Words With Friends 2 is Zynga’s most popular word game. It plays basically just like Scrabble. You and another player get some letters. You place them on a board to generate points. The player with the most points wins the game. This is a full online multiplayer experience, but you can play solo if you want to. The gameplay itself is perfectly fine and looks good.
You can remove ads, but it costs $10 per 30 days and we think that’s kind of awful. The freemium aspects of it aren’t overly gratifying either. Other than that, it’s a winner. Zynga also has Crossword With Friends, Boggle With Friends, and Draw Something. All three are excellent freemium word games. You can also find an official Scrabble game on Google Play, but this one is better.
Word Yarn
Price: Free to play
Word Yard is another simple word game and it’s another mix of Boggle and a crossword puzzle. You get a series of letters and you fill in the crossword section above. The game features hundreds of levels that get more difficult as you go. It also boasts no time limits, support for dozens of languages, full offline support, and more. The game is also kid-friendly because a lot of the early puzzles are ridiculously easy. Those looking for a true challenge may not find this game difficult enough to sate those needs. However, it’s not half bad for a free word game.
It’s only words and words that we all have to take over the world. Either you speak or write your choice of words play a significant role in making your personality.
