This is the fatured image for the best word games, word puzzle games, and word search games for android

Words games are enjoyable because they are simple. There are a variety of word games. You can find words within a massive jumble of letters, unscramble anagrams, or fill in crossword puzzles. You can find all of those experiences along with some rather unique ones on mobile. There are quite a few options. However, many of them are copies of one another or don’t deliver a ton of actual content. We tried our best to sift through and find the best ones. There are official releases for classic word games like Scrabble Go (Google Play link), but the mobile versions often leave a lot to be desired. You can also find a bunch of Wordle variants in the Play Store, but they’re usually riddled with ads, which makes us sad.

In any case, here are the best word games, word puzzle games, and word search games for Android. If you need some help, we recommend checking out these anagram solvers and these cross solvers.

Bonza Word Puzzle

Price: Free with in-app purchases

Bonza Word Puzzle is an interesting hybrid between crossword and puzzle genres. Players get a clue and a bunch of letters all jumbled up. You arrange several different words by connecting the puzzle pieces together. It’s simple, fun, and it gets challenging occasionally. Players get the starter pack and two puzzle packs for free. You can unlock more with the coins you earn from doing packs or you can buy them with in-app purchases. We really appreciate the lack of a subscription price with this one and it’s also kid-friendly. We have no major complaints although some reviewers do have the occasional bug.

Crossword Puzzle by Redstone

Price: Free / Up to $4.99

Crossword Free screenshot 2021

Joe Hindy / Android Authority

Crossword Puzzle by Redstone is, well, a crossword puzzle app with a bunch of free content. It works like a crossword puzzle probably should. You get a bunch of clues and you type in the answers. The app has easy, medium, and hard difficulties along with free packs of crosswords on a weekly basis. You can always purchase more via in-app purchases as well. The game also provides hints and controls for easily removing mistakes or skipping cells with letters while entering an answer. It’s even available offline. We honestly couldn’t find anything wrong with it. It’s a good, simple crossword puzzle game.

Hex Words is a competitive word game. You start with a bunch of letters in a hexagon shape on your phone. You tap the letters to form words as fast as you can. There is also an adventure mode where you find six related words to complete the challenge and the puzzle. We like this one because it’s minimal, free, and has no advertising. The colors of the puzzles are splashy and fun as well. There’s very little wrong with this one considering its price tag and target audience.

Letterpress

Price: Free / $4.99

Letterpress screenshot 2023

Letterpress is another unique word puzzle game. It’s kind of like a much more intense version of Boggle. You and another player go head to head with a five-by-five grid of letters. Each letter fills in with your color when you create words. The game ends when you fill in every letter with a color. There are some rules in there, but it’s actually a fairly challenging game.

You can play with other people or with one of four bots. The game also comes with some of the tamest ads we’ve ever seen, support for the Oxford Dictionary, bad words, and even a bunch of stats to track your gameplay. The UI is super simple, but the game is surprisingly engaging. We definitely recommend this one. It’s definitely one of the best free word games.

Ruzzle screenshot 2023

Ruzzle is a competitive word-finder game. The goal is to find as many words as you can in two minutes. The winner is the person with the most points. That means you can technically win by having fewer words if your words generate a higher score. It’s a fun little game to play with simple mechanics. You simply select the letters, generate the word, and get points based on the value of each letter. This one is a premium game, so there are no ads to mess with your good time. It’s super rare to find an actively developed premium game that has an online multiplayer.

Sticky Terms is a bit more of a puzzle game than a word game, but each puzzle has words. You start each round with a fragment of a word along with an assortment of shapes and lines. You rotate each shape or line until it becomes part of the word. The round ends when you create a new word. Each word is a word that doesn’t have an equivalent outside of its native language, so you’ll be creating many words you likely haven’t heard of before. The extra bit of educational value makes it a fun time. This game is free with ads.

Wordfued screenshot 2020

Joe Hindy / Android Authority

Wordfued is another online word game. This one plays like Scrabble. You have a selection of letters. Each round, you use those letters to create a word on the board, which gives you points. The game includes a chat function so you can talk to your opponent. Otherwise, it’s basically an online competitive version of Scrabble. There isn’t much else to talk about with this one. We consider that one of the pros of it. It does what it says and we appreciate that.

Wordscapes

Price: Free to play

Wordscapes is kind of a mixture of Boggle and a crossword puzzle. Players get a mix of letters on the bottom of the screen and a crossword-style layout at the top. You swipe letters to form words that fill in the crossword section. The goal is to find all of the words that fit rather than finding every single word. The game includes over 5,000 puzzles (many with themes), simple mechanics, and a couple of different game modes. The game features some rather obnoxious advertising and that makes it less friendly to free players. Otherwise, the experience isn’t half bad.

Words With Friends 2 and other Zynga games

Price: Free to play

Words With Friends 2 is Zynga’s most popular word game. It plays basically just like Scrabble. You and another player get some letters. You place them on a board to generate points. The player with the most points wins the game. This is a full online multiplayer experience, but you can play solo if you want to. The gameplay itself is perfectly fine and looks good.

You can remove ads, but it costs $10 per 30 days and we think that’s kind of awful. The freemium aspects of it aren’t overly gratifying either. Other than that, it’s a winner. Zynga also has Crossword With Friends, Boggle With Friends, and Draw Something. All three are excellent freemium word games. You can also find an official Scrabble game on Google Play, but this one is better.

Word Yarn

Price: Free to play

Word Yarn - best word games

Word Yard is another simple word game and it’s another mix of Boggle and a crossword puzzle. You get a series of letters and you fill in the crossword section above. The game features hundreds of levels that get more difficult as you go. It also boasts no time limits, support for dozens of languages, full offline support, and more. The game is also kid-friendly because a lot of the early puzzles are ridiculously easy. Those looking for a true challenge may not find this game difficult enough to sate those needs. However, it’s not half bad for a free word game.

It’s only words and words that we all have to take over the world. Either you speak or write your choice of words play a significant role in making your personality.

So, here is a list of 5-word games to enhance your word power and vocabulary:

Words With Friends 2

Why you can trust Android Central

Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test.

Words With Friends is one of those classic games that practically everyone has played, so it only makes sense that, eventually, a sequel would be released.

So what’s new with Words With Friends 2? Zynga has completely redesigned the look and feel of the game while also adding a bunch of cool new game modes. There’s Solo Challenge which pits you against iconic literary figures controlled by the CPU, from Jane Austen to the master wordsmith himself William Shakespeare. Then there’s Lightning Round which is a team-based mode where it’s a race to get to 750 points. Each member of your team starts with their own board and you swap and add words to each other’s board as fast as you can. Both of these modes seem to address the biggest gripe with the original game — waiting for your friend to finally play a word.

Its a substantial update to a beloved game that’ll likely lead to a whole bunch of Facebook invitations to play from friends and family, and does good work to further differentiate Words With Friends from Scrabble.

Wordament

Wordament is an online-only multiplayer game that lets you compete against other spellers across the globe. Swipe to connect letters diagonally, horizontally, and vertically in order to score points based on a word’s rarity, determined by how often the word is found by the player-base. You can rotate the board to better see combination options, but the placement of letters does not change in relation to other letters.

Add an Xbox or Facebook account in order to keep track of your friends and progress as you move up the leaderboard. Ads are minimal — a refreshing for many gamers.

Heads Up!

Heads Up! is a really fun local multiplayer trivia game. One player holds a phone or tablet to their head showing a word, and a teammate gives hints as to what the word is (without saying it specifically, of course). A quick flip down of the device brings up a fresh word when guessed right, while a flip-up is a pass. After it’s all done, you can watch a video replay taken from the device’s front-facing camera and share it out with friends. There are six themed packs available out of the gate, and plenty more through in-app purchases of about a buck a pop.

You definitely need to give Heads Up! a try if you’ve been looking for something easy to play at parties.

4 Pics 1 Word

How good are you at word association? Put your brain to the test to find the right word in 4 Pics 1 Word.

This game gives your four pictures that are all connected by a common word. Can you figure it out? This is a great casual game that starts out pretty easy but gets progressively more difficult as you reach the higher levels. There are literally thousands of levels to play so you’re never going to run out of puzzles. It’s a great game to play by yourself or with a small group of friends. It gets your brain going — and is also filled with ads. But it’s free!

Snap Attack

SnapAttack is the classic Scrabble game with a twist. Instead of taking turns against opponents creating words one at a time, SnapAttack gives you 2.5 minutes, 7 letter tiles, and a board with two words already on it. Your job is to place the letter tiles on the board as words and rearrange them as many times as possible before your time is up. SnapAttack rewards points the same way as Scrabble: tiles are assigned a number, and the board has score multipliers in the form of double- or triple-word and letter scores.

Work your way up the global leaderboard by creating as many words as possible during each round. A new round will automatically begin, so expect to lose track of time. There doesn’t seem to be any ads in this game, a nice change from the norm.

Wheel of Fortune Free Play

The classic word-guessing game show is available for mobile in the form of Wheel of Fortune Free Play. Featuring slick graphics and Pat Sajak himself, Wheel of Fortune Free Play is the official game of the beloved game show. Spin the wheel and solve the word puzzles, and then see if you can win the bonus round

You’ll have to play for a while to level up and unlock new modes like head-to-head and Vanna’s Showcase, and there are daily bonus rewards to keep you playing. If you love Wheel Of Fortune, you’ll love the mobile game.

Word games have been a part of my life (or anyone else’s) since school when my English lessons involved such word making adventures. Coming back to 2019, the very essence of the word-making games lives in me, and I, much like various other grammar Nazis, have a thing for expanding our vocabulary.

So, I thought, why not present you guys with the best word game apps, so that you can install some or the other and start binge word-making.

As a disclaimer, the list contains apps I have used and have good ratings on the Google Play Store. However, you may still opt for other apps as per your wish.

9 Best Word Game Apps For Android And iOS

1. Alphabear 2

alphbear 2

The Alphabear 2 word game app is different than an ordinary word-making scenario. The game has various Chapters and three levels to choose from — Normal, Hard, and Master. The game begins with a story in which the bear you selected has to restore all the words and objects in the history and that’s when the Chapters begin. Each chapter earns you points and rewards and an added bear.

Unlike regular word-making from a couple of letters, this Android word game app has a box-like structure where letters are spread and you have to make words and hurry up because the words can turn into rocks. With every valid word, the bears present in the box grow and earn you points.

The app is easy to play, and the best part is the absence of ads that tend to enter every other game.

Pros: No ads and a new concept

Cons: It takes a while to get a hang of it

Availability: Android

2. Words With Friends 2

words with friends 2

The popular Words With Friends 2 by Zynga is the ideal digital Scrabble which lured me to the core as I am a Scrabble person. A game which can be played with friends or any other person online requires you to log in first before you start.

The app follows a simple process wherein you are required to make words turn after turn and the one with the highest score wins. If you are not satisfied you can also go for a rematch.

While the game keeps you glued to your screens, the annoying elements are the constant long ads along with a cluttered UI which causes a lot of confusion and irritation.

Pros: Intriguing

Cons: Loads of ads

Availability: Android and iOS

3. Word Collect

word collect

The Word Collect app is similar to the Word Connect app, which is mentioned later in the list, and follows the same drill of finding words from a cluster of letters provided. The ease of playing this word game app is similar to Word Connect and the initial levels are really simple to play. There is the Settings option, the option to play Mini-Games within the app, points for bonus words, and no ads — which is a great thing.

One downside to the game is that when it makes suggestions about a particular feature on the game, it doesn’t allow you to dismiss the option which gets annoying at times.

Pros: Easy game

Cons: Not a new concept

Availability: Android

4. Word Nut

word nut

Word Nut app is a crossword game in which you have to form words out of the provided few letters. The concept is similar to most of the word game apps I have talked about previously; you get hints, you get to make bonus words that will get you extra points, free coins for watching videos, and more.

However, one thing which is different is the ability to turn off ads by making purchases or watching a video which is a helpful feature.

Additionally, the level of the game is quite easy due to which the game-play becomes addictive with each increasing Level under each Chapter.

Pros: Option to switch off ads

Cons: Tends to get monotonous

Availability: Android and iOS

5. Word Cookies

word cookies

With a baker’s theme, the word game is all about the formation of words from provided letters and once the words are formed, they turn into cookies. The app has various stages: from Home Baker to Monumental (with loads of levels at each stage) — trying to make you the finest word chef ever.

Apart from the interesting theme, Word Cookies has the option to shuffle, to get hints, and of course — adverts.

While retaining the traits of a usual word game, the Word Cookies app is interesting for its theme.

Pro: Interesting theme

Cons: Word-making similar to other apps

Availability: Android and iOS

6. Word Connect

word connect

The app follows the lines of Word Trip wherein you are required to make words from letters. The concept is similar and consists of various levels, hints, free coins, and more. However, the game is more on the easier side and starts off on a really easy-to-crack note. With a constant wood-like theme, this Android word game app also provides you with free time-to-time gifts and has Quests to follow which involves various achievements and rewards for you.

While the game is an easygoing one, what makes it irritating is the appearance of ads in short intervals; you make two correct words and an ad pops up.

Pros: Ease of playing

Cons: Ads every now and then

Availability: Android

7. Word Trip

word trip

Word Trip follows a basic concept of work-making; it provides shuffled letters and you are required to form possible words out of it. With various levels and sub-levels, the competition in the game increases. The word game app comes with added features such as daily bonuses, an in-built dictionary, points for bonus words, a spin wheel for added benefits, and more.

In addition to this, the UI of the game is pretty simple and pleasing, following the theme of various countries and the theme of the game changes with every country. However, ads make the usage annoying.

Pros: Ease of playing and the presence of a dictionary

Cons: Adverts and toughness of the game

Availability: Android and iOS

8. Word Search

word search

The Word Search app is a type of crossword wherein you have to look for words amidst many scattered letters. The app’s UI is a simple one where you have to look for provided words, you can take hints, or solve the entire game by giving away your points. The game, like most games, has levels and the number of words along with the difficulty level increases with each level.

The game has a smooth flow and you will love enjoying it. However, ads and the sound of the game even while listening to music is a turnoff.

7. Letter Rip

If you don’t like being rushed by a ticking timer or sort of thing, you have a good chance to love Letter Rip. Unlike other word games for Android, this one allows you to play it to your heart’s content and set your own pace.

Heck, you can even forget the rules that require you to make words from traditional orientation (left to right or top to bottom). So long as the letters are close to each other, you can connect them altogether to form a word. Sounds good, right?

6. Word Search

This game should be familiar to you if you were once like me, an EFL (English as a foreign language) learner. You get a large grid of letters to start with and when you feel you’re ready, you can begin scanning the grid to look for words. When you got one, all you have to do is just  draw a line through it. It’s very simple indeed. Perhaps, too simple because there is not much of customization provided. An option to turn the grid to a darker color scheme would be nice.
