Mavrik Home Builders and AODBT Architecture + Interior Design collaborated on the lottery home.
“We wanted to design a home that stood out with a bit of wow but was also not out of place in the neighbourhood,” says Chris Popplewell, president of Mavrik Home Builders and parent company Strata Development Corporation.
“We partnered with Leif Friggstad with AODBT in the design process and chose a Nordic design theme,” says Popplewell. “The decor was selected and staged by our own designer, Jennifer McLean, with many furnishings sourced from Garden Architecture and Design.”
Nordic influences can be seen in the home’s clean lines and functional design. Large windows and skylights are strategically placed so natural light flows through the home. The serene neutral colour palette is complemented by natural materials, including antique gold accents, white oak floors, built-ins and millwork — even dashes of leather.
The builder’s attention to detail is evident as you enter the home. “We wanted to create a foyer that says ‘you’ve arrived’ and invites you into the home,” says Popplewell.
Next stop is the living room, with its dramatic 25-foot vaulted ceiling and wall of windows. The fireplace is a real attention-getter. Mavrik installed the new Dimplex Opti-Myst fireplace which uses ultrasonic technology to create the illusion of a wood-burning fire from mist and lights. “It doesn’t generate heat and you don’t have to protect it with a glass guard,” says Popplewell.
The fireplace surround is finished in Venetian plaster, with a sliding panel that reveals a wall-mounted television. The curved walls of the surround are highlighted in antique gold, using a 3M graphic film.
Curves are a uniting theme throughout the home. There are numerous curved niches with white oak floating shelves, ideal for displaying collectibles. The tray ceiling in the dining room features curved lines, highlighted by recessed lights. The ensuite shower has a curved doorway and modified barrel ceiling.
“The home’s design is quite traditional but we softened it up a bit with the curves,” says Popplewell.
The easy flow from the living room to the dining room to the spacious kitchen is ideal for entertaining. At the heart of the kitchen is a 10-foot waterfall quartz-topped island, with drawers and cabinets on both sides. Oak doors pop open to reveal a floor-to-ceiling pantry.
The kitchen overlooks a pergola-covered deck, landscaped yard and detached double garage.
At the home’s rear entrance is a mud room with bench seating, a huge closet and a custom pegboard wall with dowels for hanging jackets, backpacks — even a bike.
Next to the mud room is a home office with a built-in desk and floating shelves. A rolling barn door provides privacy for work or study.
A white oak staircase leads to the second floor where there are three bedrooms, including the inviting primary suite. The suite’s vaulted ceiling and full-length wall of windows creates the feeling of being in a tree house. Luxury touches in the ensuite include a unique floating quartz vanity, stand-alone soaker tub and supersized shower.
The home’s lower level is completely developed, with a large family room and wet bar, a fitness studio, full bathroom and a guest bedroom.
Popplewell says that the lottery home project was challenging and exciting.
“We only do custom work, so we’re always used to working with a client. For the lottery home, we needed to design the home to appeal to a broad demographic, not a specific client’s needs. We had to envision ourselves as the client and cater to a future homeowner’s desires.”
The lottery home is a rare opportunity to tour a Mavrik build.
“Most custom clients don’t want people touring their homes. The lottery home has provided us with an opportunity to showcase the work we do and support a worthy organization,” says Popplewell.
“Over the years, we’ve seen what the Saskatoon Kinsmen Club is doing and where the dollars are going. It’s all going back into our local community. The club really continues to serve the community’s greatest needs.”
The Kinsmen Home Lottery has raised over $16 million since its inception, used to provide those in need with the necessities of life, care for the elderly and people with special needs, as well as to support education, athletics, music and arts programs.
The Kinsmen lottery home opened for viewing April 1, attracting close to 1,000 people in the first weekend. The home is open for viewing on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Word For Today (known as The Word For You Today in some countries) is a free, daily devotional written by Northern Irish Christian pastor Bob Gass and published around the world by United Christian Broadcasters (UCB). Over 3.5 million copies are distributed quarterly worldwide. Gass said the devotional «is a kick start for cold mornings, when you don’t feel like reading your Bible or find it a bit dry, that’s when you need a good injection of inspiration. That’s what I want to provide for our readers, something to focus their minds on God’s goodness».[1]
A million copies are distributed to UCB listeners, hospital patients, prisoners and residents of care centres throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. Separate versions are produced for Albania, Australia, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Caribbean, Holland, Estonia, Portugal, Philippines, New Zealand, Nigeria, South Africa (Afrikaans and English languages), Spain and Italy by the UCB national UCB body or an affiliate. Another version is distributed by Bob Gass Ministries in the United States.
Production of a contemporary version called Word 4U 2Day (known as Word For You Today in some countries) began in August 2003. It was developed in conjunction with The Message Trust, a Christian youth ministry based in Manchester. It is an adaption of the original devotional, geared to appeal to the younger generations in society. The first edition of The Word 4U 2Day rolled off the press in time for August 2003 with a print run of quarter of a million copies. Since then it has increased in popularity and is popular with other age groups as well.[1] (Word For You in the UK is now only available via the UCB Player app.)[2]

United Christian Broadcasters[edit]
United Christian Broadcasters was set up to Christian radio station Rhema Media in New Zealand, to allow groups in other countries set up similar stations in their own countries. It became an umbrella body for autonomous affiliate broadcasting organisations in different parts of the world. The first affiliate in Australia supported new Christian radio stations, called Rhema FM, before establishing its own group of radio stations, operating as the Vision Radio Network.
Other affiliates followed in the United Kingdom, Europe, Africa, Pacific countries, South America theDove in Oregon, United States. Smaller broadcasters were set up in Madagascar, Brazil, the Philippines and Estonia, by building up local support and then obtaining terrestrial licenses.[3] At its height in 2011, UCB was a group of 32 organisations which claimed to reach millions of people in at least 24 different languages through radio, television, printed devotionals and websites. Several million copies of The Word for Today were published every quarter, in about a dozen languages.
The Word For Today[edit]
Gass (born 1944 died 5 June 2019) was an American-based Christian pastor, broadcaster and author of several books. He was raised in Northern Ireland, but moved to Atlanta, Georgia in the United States when he was 18 years old. Gass, along with his brother Neil and sister Ruth, were brought up in a strong Christian tradition by their mother after their father had died when Bob was just thirteen. He became involved in Christian leadership for over 40 years, but much of his inspiration was based on the Biblical principles instilled in him by his mother.[4]
He began collating his inspirational writings in 1992 and in 1993 started sending copies to friends and supporters in the United States.[4] Astounded by the response he received in the United States, Gass offered his devotional readings to Gareth Littler, the former Chief Executive Officer of UCB, to encourage their listeners. In April 1994, The Word For Today was launched with an initial print run of 3,500 copies and circulated to UCB’s supporters within the UK. The reach was later expanded to other parts of the world.[1]
Bob Gass Ministries[edit]
Gass ran Bob Gass Ministries from his home in Georgia, with an international purpose and scope. His organisation retains the right to distribute the devotional within the United States.[4]
