Word for with respect to

We use both “respect to” and “respect for” in English. We use “respect for” when we want to show respect in general and “respect to” when we want to direct our respect in a particular direction.

Examples:

I always have respect for people who work hard.

I am showing respect to you.

The difference between “respect to” and “respect for” is that when we use “respect to”, we are sending our respect in the direction of someone or some people. We use  “respect for”  when we just want to say that we respect something.

We use “respect for” when we want to show that we want to respect people and their qualities or any other noun that warrants it.

Examples:

I have a lot of respect for nature.

My respect for you is real.

People in Asia have respect for people older than them.

Respect to

We use “respect to” when we are directly talking to someone or when the respect is direct towards someone. The use of “to” here is a common way to use “to” in English and has the meaning of moving in a particular direction(eg I am going to the cinema).

Examples:

Respect to my homies!

I always pay respect to my God before I go outside.

Respect for or Respect to

The above explanation should be used as a guide as there are situations where you can use either “respect to” or  “respect for”.

You can pay attention to the context and that might help you decide which preposition to use.

Verbs with respect to

Show respect to

Pay respect to

Give respect to

Respect to…(Imperative)

Verbs with respect for

Have respect for

There are also situations when you don’t need to use any prepositions.

I respect you.

He respects his grandmother.

Respectful of/to

We use the preposition “of” when we use the adjective form “respectful” with something and “to” with someone.

Examples:

I am always respectful of our boundaries.

Please be respectful to our neighbors.

Respect or Respects

We use “respects” as a verb with the third-person singular and as a plural for the noun “respect”.

Examples:

He always respects his mother.

You need to go to the funeral home to pay your respects.

Huge Respect To or For?

You can use either “huge respect to” when you are sending your respect directly to someone and “huge respect for” when you want to say that you have a lot of respect for something.

Much Respect

“Much respect” similar to “much love” are modern informal expressions in English. “Much respect” means “I have a lot of respect for you”. I wouldn’t use this expression in a formal situation.

Respect towards?

“Respect towards” is possible but you might as well use “respect to” as they mean the same thing.

You should show respect towards your colleagues.

Who needs respect? Everyone does! However, in order to get that highly regarded respect, you need to earn it, not demand for it. Do you show your respect to your boss, or for your boss? That’s the issue here.

(a) respect to

If you’re conveying your respect directly to a person, then you use “respect to“.

Examples:

  • I’m showing my respect to you by disagreeing in a polite manner to what you’ve said
  • My respect to you, sir, for speaking so boldly in front of all the managers.
  • This morning, I paid my last respects to Ms. Jones at the funeral parlour.

Note:
The word “respect” must always end with an “-s” if used together with “last” as in “last respects“.

(b) respect for

If you’re showing respect towards a person, or you admire that person for his ideas and qualities, then use “respect for“.

Examples:

  • I’ve absolutely no respect for anyone who believes he’s right all the time.
  • Ismail shows his great respect for his elderly by not rebelling even though he is right.
  • You need to show respect for those who are not from your country.

Therefore, there’s no way you can say:

  • I show my respect for you. (X)

Why do you need to show your respect for another person when they’re already in front of you? It doesn’t make sense, does it? 🙂

Hi teachers,

Peter took a shower and got dressed at the very last minute, so Mary and Peter arrived about half an hour late at the bar.
Context:
Mary: We’re late––thanks to Peter. Now there aren’t any seats. I’m very sorry, Sheila.

Would, ‘with reference to; with respect to’ be
appropriate paraphrases for ‘with regard to’ in the following question?

Question:

What is the situation with regard to seating when they arrive?
There aren’t any seats.

Thanks in advance.

  • Cenzontle

    • #2

Yes, I think we can say all three phrases are synonymous.
In speech, they all sound somewhat formal. They are used mainly in written language.
In conversation, I would ask «What’s the seating situation when they arrive?»

It’s not easy, believe it or not, for native speakers to remember the difference (if any) between expressions like with regard/respect to, in regard to, in respect of. regarding etc.
So they tend to stick to one. With reference to is easy to remember.

This formulation is not bad and avoids the formalisms.
«What’s the situation with [or, about] seating, when they arrive?»

«With reference to» sounds like part of a legal opinion, or a reply to a business letter.
