Word for when someone is there for you

can anyone help with this please? Is there a single word that can be used to refer to someone who is always there for you, like a father or a mother who does every little thing for you? Like s/he is like sticking up for you, embracing and covering you up by doing everything for you? Thanks.

We often refer to someone who is always there supporting you as:

  • a rock.

Here’s an entry from Collins:

rock (rɒk)

n

  1. a person or thing suggesting a rock, esp in being dependable, unchanging, or providing firm foundation.

That person could be considered nurturing.

nurturing (verb): to feed and protect; to support and encourage, as during the period of training or development

Although if they do it too much, they could end up smothering you.

smother (verb): to surround (with) or envelop (in): he smothered her with love

My friend came across something terrible. I was trying to cheer her up. I said «I am always here/there for you».

I wonder if those two both work when you are trying to comfort and support someone.

Thank you.

    • #2

At the moment you are saying the words to your friend, it’s much more natural to say ‘here for you’ (because you are, literally, present next to her.

You could say either if you are just talking generally (not when the friend is actually upset) about always supporting her: You know I’m always here/there for you.

You would most likely use ‘there for you’ when talking about a third person: Two girls talking: ‘John is a good friend. He’s always there for you.’ (John is not present in the room.)

    Comforting Bible Verses

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

    2 Timothy 1:7

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.

    Revelation 21:4

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.

    Psalm 46:1-3 KJV

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

    Joshua 1:9 KJV

Are there any comforting quotes or words that helped you through a difficult time? A well-written card or a thoughtful text can turn someone’s day around when they’re struggling. It’s normal to get writers block when we are overcome with emotion and trying to find the right things to say.

When someone is going through a difficult time, it is important to remind them to practice self-care. You may consider making them a self-care gift basket, fully equipped with bath salts, a journal, candles, and a thoughtful book.

I hope this post helped you in searching for the right words to comfort your friend or family member in need. If you have any thoughtful words you would like to add, leave them in a comment below.
