I came across a word-of-the-day in the Merriam-Webster dictionary in late 2019. It described a person who gives a lot of his time to philosophising and stays away from the actual world and his responsibilities.
Does anyone know what this refers to?

Are you looking for the word luftmensch (MW Word of the Day: August 1, 2019)?

an impractical contemplative person having no definite business or income

They give this example referring to a philosopher:

«People like Luftmenschen, and they’ve liked them for a long time. The image of Thales, called the world’s first philosopher, cannot be proven, but it’s comforting to think that intellectuals have their heads in the clouds and stumble into the well before their feet.» — Susan Neiman, Einstein for the 21st Century, 2008

If not, take a look at the archived snapshot of all of MW’s WotDs and see if you recognize the word.

Four words come to mind. I imagine there are others. The dictionary meanings of these four words differ slightly and are too tedious to repeat here but I suggest that the person may, according to context, be described as: a dreamer (captivated by and engaged in their philosophic notions); a fantasist (erecting fantasies built on their philosophic notions); a visionary (creating philosophic notions not necessarily well-rooted in present realities); or an escapist (actively escaping present day discomforts by choosing to think of philosophical abstracts).

This will go down like a ton of bricks, but I thought it was a Frenchman.

I’m actually a Francophile, but as a scientist I’d blame their education system.

(Mind you, there are some advanced scientific countries — not France — where half the population don’t even believe in evolution.)

Hi guys, could anyone tell me is there a word, set phrase or expression I can use to say what I’m trying to say above.

I don’t know if I’ve made myself clear. But what I want to say is that something is very simple, as it appears, and there’s no need to go too deep into it.

Actually «you’re thinking too much about it» is fine. There’s also «you’re reading too deep (into it)», although that usually means interpreting something meant to be lighthearted too seriously.

    Or you could use ‘overanalyzing.’

Thank you Pidginboy and Cropje jnr. «…interpreting something meant to be lighthearted too seriously» I think this is exactly what I wanted to say. Also, can I say you’re going too far into it?

    Thanks for Languageguy’s input too!

In ordinary speech we are more likely to say: «you are reading too much into it», meaning that you are giving it too much and too complicated a significance. We might say that, for instance, to someone who was going on and on about what another person’s smile could have meant.

This is true of AmE, in any case.
