A phrase used by a simple-minded person to demean the creativity, efforts, interests and achievements of another because they do not specifically relate to said simple-minded person’s interests. While it is sometimes used when refering to a genuine waste of time, generally its usage pertains to interests that are very much a legitimate way to spend time. There is nothing wrong with having hobbies, even if they aren’t mainstream.

Note that this definition is not in reference or response to the previous definition.

Person1: Hey, can you read my short story and tell me what you think of it?

Person2: You spend hours doing something you enjoy doing that requires talent and creativity for the purpose of entertaining yourself and others as well as developing skills that could prove useful outside of said activity? Get the too much free time mug.

Used to describe people who waste most of their lives on the internet because they can’t be bothered to read a book, go outside or find a friend. Instead, they torture all the rest of us with incomprehensible cryptic words, grammar and emoji because they are too lazy to learn how to write. Ironically they believe they are the smartest person in the room. The real «professionals» typically have some kind of social justice warrior cause that is not only factually incorrect, but is actually the paradox of what is true. Yet their mindlessness does not allow them to understand and admit it to themselves.

I am not sure what scares me more: That you said that or that you believe it. Clearly you have too much free time and you don’t use it very well.

The Urban Thesaurus was created by indexing millions of different slang terms which are defined on sites like Urban Dictionary. These indexes are then used to find usage correlations between slang terms. The official Urban Dictionary API is used to show the hover-definitions. Note that this thesaurus is not in any way affiliated with Urban Dictionary.

Due to the way the algorithm works, the thesaurus gives you mostly related slang words, rather than exact synonyms. The higher the terms are in the list, the more likely that they’re relevant to the word or phrase that you searched for. The search algorithm handles phrases and strings of words quite well, so for example if you want words that are related to lol and rofl you can type in lol rofl and it should give you a pile of related slang terms. Or you might try boyfriend or girlfriend to get words that can mean either one of these (e.g. bae). Please also note that due to the nature of the internet (and especially UD), there will often be many terrible and offensive terms in the results.

There is still lots of work to be done to get this slang thesaurus to give consistently good results, but I think it’s at the stage where it could be useful to people, which is why I released it.

Special thanks to the contributors of the open-source code that was used in this project: @krisk, @HubSpot, and @mongodb.

Hello dear forum members,

I’m reading someone’s piece of writing and English is not their mother tongue. So here’s this sentence:

  • Some teenagers have too much free time and friends and it… (doesn’t matter)

I wonder if that sounds natural. I’m confused by much having a reference both to an uncountable noun (time) and a countable one (friends).

Is that ok to use much in here? Would you consider it a grammar mistake?

I appreciate your help.

I’d like to see the whole sentence, but it does seem pretty likely that there is a mistake here.

Some teenagers have too much free time and friends and that’s why they don’t get interested in something serious like science, for example.

A follow-up question: What about this modification, its that ok too?

    • Some teenagers have too much friends and free time and that’s why they don’t get interested in something serious like science, for example.

Some teenagers have too much free time and too many friends and that’s why they don’t develop an interest in something serious like, for example, science.

What about this modification, its that ok too?

    • Some teenagers have too much friends and free time

    No. That is wrong.

    Guidance:
    Much + uncountable noun
    Many + plural countable noun

    exorbitant

exceeding the bounds of custom, propriety, or reason, especially in amount or extent; highly excessive

    inordinate

not within proper or reasonable limits; immoderate; excessive

    unreasonable

    excessive, immoderate, or exorbitant; unconscionable

I would see all these three as stronger than too much.

Waste might be a good choice

I waste too much time on youtube

Waste and spend share similarities in meaning, but waste implies that you shouldn’t be spending so much.
